John Harbaugh: Patriots’ titles have asterisks, are stained
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 1, 2012, 11:36 AM EDT

Ravens coach John Harbaugh believes the Spygate scandal permanently taints the Patriots, saying the three titles the team won under coach Bill Belichick have to be called into question because the team broke NFL rules by taping opposing coaches’ signals.

In an interview on Baltimore radio station 97.9 FM, Harbaugh was asked about the Saints bounty scandal. But instead of talking about the Saints, Harbaugh focused his answer on the Patriots.

“In the end, everything is brought before the light of day,” Harbaugh said. “Even the thing in New England, no matter whether those things had any impact on whether they won their championships or not, they got asterisks now, it’s been stained. So to me, it’s never worth it. You’ve got to figure out ways to use the rules to your advantage.”

Harbaugh said he and the Ravens organization are always careful to make sure they’re in compliance with the rules of the NFL.

“If you’re cheating, in the end, you’re going to get discredited,” Harbaugh said. “It’s just not worth it.”

Harbaugh added that he believes the Ravens have been victimized by other teams cheating in the past, although he doesn’t want to say which teams because he believes such an accusation would become a headline at a certain pro football website.

“Yeah, I have, but if I say when, it’s gonna be like Pro Football Talk is gonna blow up like crazy,” Harbaugh said when asked if he thinks he has ever been victimized by another team breaking the rules. “I’m going to get accused of accusing somebody of something.”

Consider PFT blowed up, Coach Harbaugh.

Is being a crybaby...obviously bitter about the conference loss.

Frankly, all I know is New England did this video taping against the Jets. We have no evidence, nothing confirmed, that they ever used this regularly and in big games against the Steelers or in the Super Bowl; I like to believe the commissioner would not have sat on this information and destroyed it.

Haters.

on other teams is nothing new. And it shouldn't taint the Patriots.

Parcells used to worry like crazy that teams were spying on the Giants when they practiced outside from the hotels that overlooked the practice field. They probably were.

the Harbaughs are the Danny Ainges of football. Bunch of freaking whiners.
Still hate Rex way more.
Dave in Hoboken : 5/1/2012 1:35 pm : link
The only reason he was complimentary is because we embarassed them. If they beat us by 1, they would have shit on us like he has been doing since Day 1. Loser mentality/inferriority complex all rolled into one. Although, I have no problem saying the Harbaughs' are whiny bitches themselves.
Why didn't Harbaugh call a timeout

before his kicker attempted that potential game-tying FG?

Exactly. I think Rex is amusing, and his smack talk does add sizzle to some rivalries. It was much sweeter beating them this year than it would have been under Mangini. I think the Harbaugh's are just unlikeable turds.
He basically said that it isn't worth it to cheat -- that it taints

But him saying this 3 months after losing to the Pats makes him look like a soar loser.

What I could never understand about Spygate is why didn't Goodell follow through with the investigation? Why did he dismiss it? Doing that just makes it look like an even bigger cover up than recording other teams practices & signals.

MarshallOnMontana : 5/1/2012 1:45 pm : link
Has any other coach that you know of used the word asterisk in relation to the Pats? I dont recall one, and if there was, hes an idiot too

These guys are all in the same line of work, they know what you have to put in to succeed, and hes smart enough to know that the reasons for their success go way deeper than spygate. To just shit on Belichick's accomplishments like this is a low blow. A really low blow. Typical Harbaugh.
the NFL...
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/1/2012 1:45 pm : link
is not a gentleman's game. While the Saints (Gregg Williams) went over the line, players do try to knock other players out of the game.

Other teams try to pick up signals (spy). Cofield told the Skins what was coming on the Eli pick for a TD. It's part of the game.
I think in terms of public perception
Sneakers O'toole : 5/1/2012 1:48 pm : link
he's at least somewhat right though, if you ask five random people about the Patriots accomplishments I'm sure at you'll get at least one spygate response. Right or wrong, that blemish is there in the public eye. Same with the Saints.
Didn't Parcells used to buy up all the hotel rooms

with a view of the practice field the week before a Cowboys, Eagles, or Skins game?

And again
MarshallOnMontana : 5/1/2012 1:48 pm : link
i never recall anyone putting asterisks next to Denver for way worse transgressions in their re-peat. Although they claim they didn't gain a competitive advantage from that and it only had to do with the financing of the new stadium. Sure. They built a roster exceeding the cap and got caught and had to pay a big fine and lose picks. To me cheating the salary cap is worse than spygate, but no one ever talks about them
It looks like what he said about the Patriots was taken out of context
Marty in Albany : 5/1/2012 1:50 pm : link
in response to whether he would let the Ravens break the rules. The media can be liars and cheaters, too when it comes to selling copy.

Sneakers O'toole : 5/1/2012 1:51 pm : link
they get more spotlight. Everyone and their grandmother knows about spygate, even if you don't watch football. Denver's cap shenanigans are only really known by the diehards like us.

John Harbaugh: Patriots earned those championships
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 1, 2012, 1:30 PM EDT

After saying in a radio interview that Spygate had “stained” the Patriots’ championships, Ravens coach John Harbaugh has now revised and extended those remarks.

Harbaugh issued a statement this afternoon after making those comments this morning, and he said in his statement that he wasn’t saying he personally believes the Patriots’ titles are tainted. He was saying he thinks others perceive the Patriots’ titles as tainted.

“I answered a question about playing within the rules and referred to the perception that the Super Bowl championships won by the Patriots and Saints have a stain,” Harbaugh said. “My reference was to the perception out there that came as the result of the league’s actions.”

The question asked to Harbaugh was about the Saints’ bounty scandal, and in answering Harbaugh largely ignored bounties and instead brought up Spygate. But in his clarification Harbaugh said he doesn’t want the coaches of either the Saints or the Patriots to think he was suggesting they didn’t earn their Super Bowl rings.

“I could have been more clear that I was referring to those viewpoints,” Harbaugh said. “I totally believe that the Patriot and Saint coaches and players earned those championships. Bill [Belichick] and Sean [Payton] both know that.”

Harbaugh said he has always liked and admired Belichick and contacted him today to say so.

“I called him to remind him of my respect for him,” Harbaugh said. “I also reached out to Tedy Bruschi, who rightfully defended those Patriot players and coaches on ESPN, to tell him that I agree with him that the Patriots earned every victory.”

The Ravens host the Patriots in Week Three on Sunday Night Football. Harbaugh may want to take some advice from his brother and prepare in advance for his post-game handshake.

As long as its not at the expense of us

I wouldn't mind seeing NE win another SB to shut people up. I also think it adds to our accomplishments in beating them twice. If they win 4 or 5 but we were the only team to hold them down. But i also like the notion that we could be the team who killed the Pat dynasty, and id like to see Eli and Coughlin catch Brady and Belichick in rings, so im a bit conflicted

If its Pats vs an NFC East rival of ours in the SB, or SF, i would root for the Pats. New England vs some random other NFC team i have no connection too, it would be tough
Joe, I'm with you....
Britt in VA : 5/1/2012 2:02 pm : link
I wouldn't mind any of those scenarios, either.
If the Pats make another Super Bowl
an_idol_mind : 5/1/2012 2:08 pm : link
and the Giants aren't facing them, I'll totally cheer for the Patriots. Aside from the Belichick connection, I'd love to see the Giants remembered as the Patriots' kryptonite.

I'd even more prefer to see Coughlin and Eli win another Super Bowl of their own, though.
Did Harbaugh
Phil S : 5/1/2012 2:17 pm : link
comment on his team winning it's only superbowl (before he got there) largely depending on a guy who should have been in prison?
Nah....
MetsAreBack : 5/1/2012 2:23 pm : link
I cant bring myself to root for the Pats to win a 5th.

I'd just assume Houston won one, or Peyton got another in Denver, before I'd want to see Bellicheck/Brady get a 5th.

You guys must not have Boston fan friends -- they don't come more arrogant than them, 95% of whom never watched a down pre-Drew Bledsoe.

i saw 5 titles above

I'll take your word for it. insignificant point.
I said 4 or 5
MarshallOnMontana : 5/1/2012 2:37 pm : link
If they win 1 or 2 more, and we're the only team to beat them, I think that adds to our legacy. They have a pretty good shot too. Frankly, its tough to believe they haven't won since 04, they've had so many chances

06 it was theirs. 21-3 lead in an AFC Title Game
07 a ball bounce here or there
10 they were the best team in football all season and had a bad day
11, again, a ball bounce here or there

And talent wise I think they;re on the come up.
Although
MarshallOnMontana : 5/1/2012 2:39 pm : link
you could argue from a legacy standpoint, the best thing for us is them winning no more so we have an easier chance to tie them for the most rings by a QB/HC duo in the FA/Salary cap era

Harbaugh's titles have an asterisk also

If the Pats didn't want this thrown in their faces all the time....
Torrag : 5/1/2012 3:16 pm : link
...they should have played it straight. BTW I've heard rumor that the NFL actually kept some of what New England did under wraps. Namely being directly plugged into the opponents headsets, radios, etc. at Gillette Stadium to monitor communications between the guys upstairs in the booth and the coaches on the field. Frankly I believe it Bellichick is ultra competitive and sometimes that clouds a mans judgement. The day to day pressure to win coaches operate under in the NFL is tremendous.
The difference is

You are allowed to tape other teams signals. The Giants admit to doing it themselves. You just can't videotape them. Audiotaping signals is okay (i.e., having a guy talking into a tape recorder with descriptions of the signals is allowed by the league and the Giants do it).
As abnoxious as Rex is, he's just a loudmouth. Harbaugh's are genuine
