A. Schein says that the Eagles have the most talent

in the NFC East.

And it starts….
Thought you’d all like to know this “fact”. He said so on the SiriusXM Blitz show earlier this afternoon. It’s mighty kind of him to ignore results, isn’t it? Specifically the two below:

They did

in 2011 too.

Just because they have the most talent (in his opinion)
bigblue12 : 5/10/2012 2:46 pm : link
doesn't mean they will. In all fairness, they are a tremendously talented team, as are the Cowboys and Giants. Not much separating them in talent.

The division is stacked. You could make a legitimate argument for the Cowboys, Giants or Eagles having the most talent in the NFCE.

That doesn't inherently lead to wins.

I don't know the extent of Schein's quote--if he said "the Eagles are the most talented" or "the Eagles are the most talented and therefore the best"--and the difference is crucial.

If he's just talking about the level of talent and he thinks that Philly has the most...ok, whatever. Not an unreasonable thought.
TBBO, yup.

and not even make the playoffs last year (and this was before the season started). Its helpful to know in advance to listening to anything he says that Adam Schein is a complete idiot.
Good.

Let them predict another Eagle Superbowl. That always works out well. I actually welcome their success. A strong NFC East provides the best entertainment from a Giant fan's perspective.

Frankly, I'm actually a little more concerned about Dallas. They took great strides to address that shitty secondary. I expect them to be the Giants primary contender this year.
The only fact
bois : 5/10/2012 2:52 pm : link
Is the we're officially in a new NFL season, and the hype machine is churning back to life.

The Eagles are not the most talented team in the Division by any measure. Giants have them beat in that department, soundly. As does Dallas. Eagles have the most team speed, for sure, but not the most talent.

It
Metnut : 5/10/2012 2:52 pm : link
took a miracle comeback against Dallas for the Giants to avoid going 8-8 and finishing third in the division. Not sure how being that close to nailing a prediction makes someone an idiot.

Some people are going to pick against this year, especially considering we only went 9-7 in the regular season last year.
Just one question.

Pitt G-man Dan : 5/10/2012 2:55 pm : link
that the Giants have the best offensive and defensive player in the division.
I just don't know where you'd give the Eagles
bois : 5/10/2012 2:58 pm : link
An on paper, talent-edge over the Giants or Dallas.

Speed, sure, Eagles have it.

QB I'll take Eli or Romo over Vick.

WR, I'll happily take the Giants or Cowboys group over Philly's.

There isn't a great Oline in the bunch, so I'd call that a wash. Defensive Line the Giants. Eagles over Cowboys, I guess. Linebackers major edge to Dallas, followed by the Giants then the Eagles.

Secondary I'd take New York #1. Dallas should be much improved this year, and Philly wasn't exactly all world last year.

I think LeSean McCoy is the best running back in the division. That's the one spot where Philly really has the clear talent edge.

What
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/10/2012 3:15 pm : link
it comes down to is this: do you believe in Michael Vick or don't you?

If you do, you can make the argument that they are as talented on paper as the Giants.

But if you don't believe in Michael Vick, then how can you make this argument?

It's a QB league. And Eli Manning is a top three QB.
Weird how
mrvax : 5/10/2012 3:15 pm : link
many of these talking heads know as much or less than the average BBI poster. And they get paid!!!

There simply is no reasonable argument for anyone
eclipz928 : 5/10/2012 3:17 pm : link
to pick another team, on paper, to come out of the NFC East. When you consider that the Giants had 11 guys on IR (not counting guys who were injured and then cut), they played bulks of the season without guys like Tuck, Nicks, Bradshaw, Osi, and the entire offensive line at full health, and that they've virtually lost no key players to FA - how can any reasonably intelligent person pick another team unless he thinks that Demeco Ryans is the second coming of Lawrence Taylor.

there should be a website that tracks these so called "Experts" opinions. Similar to the firejoemorga.com website. predicted the Giants not to finish last in the division after they lost smith and boss. this shit happens EVERY year. Eagles and Cowboys vying for the division title every summer.

The Giants have won 2 Superbowls in the last 5 years.

Cowboys havent done shit in 15 years. Eagles, please.
We should probably get used to proclamations
4thand17 : 5/10/2012 3:41 pm : link
like this from members of the media - a lot of them are going to pick a third place finish and no playoffs for the Giants in '12 - with a little "don't be surprised if the Skins are vastly improved with RG3" sprinkled in for good measure.
Would anyone on BBI be surprised if the Eagles won the division
wgenesis123 : 5/10/2012 3:42 pm : link
and the Giants won the Super Bowl? I do not expect that but it certainly would not surprise me after last season, the Giants are built to win playoff games and the Eagles are the Eagles.

JPP, Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, Webster, Rolle, Bradshaw, Nicks, Cruz and Manning are not talent.

Trent Cole who can't play the run is talent. Nhamdi who coudln't cover Cruz is talent. Vick who has more jail time then Eli does passing yards is talent
Our coaches are also
TheBigBlueOne : 5/10/2012 4:15 pm : link
more talented.
To add on to what Phil said
Semipro Lineman : 5/10/2012 4:15 pm : link
Outside of Running Back and Tightend, which unit on the Eagles is more talented? On defense their linebackers were worse than ours last year and they upgraded the position by getting a linebacker who had less tackles last year than Kiwi. (Yeah, I know stats don't tell the whole story but it does point to a likely smaller impact than people think.) Then the Safety position is still a big unknown for the Eagles, plus you can't call their Cornerbacks an upgrade over the Giants when you compare all the players other than Webster and Nnamdi. And unless the two draftees have immediate DROY impact, the Eagles defensive line isn't better than the Giants.

The Eagles offensive line (which didn't really perform well last year) took a hit when Peters got injured and their wide receivers may have great name value but they certainly haven't outplayed the Giant receivers. (Now Jason Avant is a very good 3rd WR and he represents the Eagles only advantage in this unit.)

Finally, the punt return game and FG kicking are the only part of the special teams the eagles have an edge. The Giants had a better KO return average and a better punting Net. Their FG kicker had a better season with more attempts than Tynes.
he didn't say the better team

A little difficult predicting schedule difficulty in advance but seems to me like we are almost spotting Cowboys and Eagles an extra win in advance. Not likely we will win both of those games.

Heath Evans said the same thing yesterday on the NFL Network
Mckee : 5/10/2012 4:34 pm : link
as he and Jamie debated which team in the NFC East is the best.

Ever notice that when there's 2 guys debating an issue, each one takes an opposing side?

Don't think for a minute that what you're hearing is what the talking head believes to be true.

Their objective isn't to present 100% truthful journalism, it's for entertainment purposes only.

On radio a similar formula prevails.

Someone like Schien will always - I mean always - prefer to make a statement that generates passionate reaction from listeners than to honestly reveal his true feelings.

He can share how he really feels with his friends (if he has any) over some beers.

On the radio his goal is to keep people listening and to get people to talk about him and his show.

This thread shows that, at least in this instance, it's mission accomplished for Schien.

These shows - these networks - they have to fill up a staggering amount of airtime - we're nearing mid-May and so far, those paid to talk NFL on radio and TV are doing a wonderful job of pretending that they're not saying the same things, day in and day out until the season starts.

Okay, I don't mean to say that Schien is doing a wonderful job, but he is doing his job. (as I've said for years, his program directors and the network consultants don't seem to be doing their jobs in regard to Schien's on air presentation. His variations in volume is a radio trick that's as old as the medium itself.

Remember Paul Harvey and how he'd deliver his shows?
Paul Harvey (inflection rising into a prolonged, dramatic pause and then a rushed) Good Day (with a clipped ending)

Schien has all of the tics and tricks and none of the intelligence and subtlety that allowed a genuinely brilliant radio communicator such as Harvey to stay on the air for more than 75 years.

Harvey adapted many of the great radio sports commentator Bill Stern's tricks - catch phrases, pauses, truly quirky intonations but what made him succeed far more than the surface sound of his shows was his content.

His content was genuinely interesting and was as unique as his delivery.

Schien is all style and very little substance - all surface and no depth. He's kept his gig for a long time and that should be a very telling indication as to what his bosses want from him and ultimately it speaks to what they want to accomplish on their network.

I think they've been very fortunate to have hired some very gifted people who transcend the shallow intentions of their management.

The Eagles were one game too late of being the team

Mckee : 5/10/2012 5:09 pm : link
wish, his true job description is to fill XXX hours a day talking NFL football with one objective and only one objective - only one prime directive and it never, ever deviates, never varies, always remains exactly the same:

" keep people listening, reacting and returning. "

Don't you guys get it?

The fix is in - the minute he's frosted your cookies, raised your hackles, pissed on your loafers, shit on your front lawn - you're going to react, and once you do, there's a better than good chance you'll come back tomorrow to see if he does it again, "the friggin' igorant bastahd."

That's his job.

Do you really think that someone, somewhere up the chain of command thought, "now here's a really brilliant thinker, a veritable football genius - boy will he educate our listeners with his mind-blowing understanding of this very complicated game?"

Or did it go something like this, "holy shit, this guy's been in my office for less than 5 minutes and I want to fucking kill him. I think we've got ourselves a show host!"

Take it from someone came close to killing himself for more than 4 decades and was too damned stupid to ever get it: it's not quality that the guys at the top of the food chain want - they want listeners to viscerally react instantly - not with their heads, but with their hearts.

They want people to have an emotional response and they don't give a fuck if it's a positive one.

In fact, they'd prefer you hate the guy. If you do, you'll be back to have him add fuel to that negative fire.

Again, consider this thread. It's a living example of my thesis - we aren't talking about how nice or complimentary
Schein's been (although when someone strokes you, you do return, but you're much more passive in your response and they want active listeners)

We all react to this sort of stuff, none of us are immune, but I'm asking that you at least recognize what's being done and understand it for what it is.

what he said today, probably just to get the overreaction.

He didn't think the Eagles were going to win the division/were the better team and he didn't claim there was some enormous talent gap.

Also:

The Eagles offensive line (which didn't really perform well last year)

There wasn't a single thing wrong the Eagles OL last year other than Vick/Young holding the ball too long and/or scrambling out of the pocket unnecessarily -- Cosell's broken it down before (and mentioned it again the other day) and PFF's pressure info backs him up. Their OL absolutely shit all over the Giants' OL in both run and pass blocking in 2011.

Peters being down hopefully kills them and causes many wrongs this season, while the Giants' somehow improves, though.

PFF isn't a legit website. It's filled with errors.

As for the Eagles OL and the Giants...I'm not sure I agree. The Giants roughed Vick up in the first game and stuffed the Eagles in two key short yardage plays (on the goal line and on 4th down). This despite Tuck being really hurt at the time and no Osi.
PFF is full of errrors, but you're trying to use part of one game as
Riggies : 5/10/2012 11:17 pm : link
proof that the Eagles OL wasn't [significantly] better than the Giants in 2011? You don't see the issue there? Especially considering the complete and utter disaster the Giants' OL was against the Eagles in the game at Metlife?

Besides, I didn't use it on its own or get into their grading or 'signature stats' -- I said their pressure data backed up Cosell's analysis of the Eagles' OL and linked his most recent comment on the matter ("For the uninitiated, it appears the Eagles OL is not very good. Those who believe that don’t understand quarterback play in the NFL.").

The Eagles, point blank, had a very good OL, all around, in 2011. The Giants didn't, regardless of you being salty over PFF. Hopefully that changes in 2012, with the Giants' OL hopefully being healthier, with better blocking from TE/FB contributing and someone stepping up to offer improvement at RT, and Philly missing Peters majorly, especially with Vick making the guys in front of him look worse like he's prone to.

We hear about Philly and Dallas talent every single year. No exception. Despite several division wins and two SBs I can't remember the last time we were a consensus favorite over Philly and Dallas. There are certain members of the media, most actually, who are drawn to hype over substance. And no matter how mant times they are shown to be wrong they can't take their eyes off the shinney objects.

I find it more than a little disheartening that you were the only one to respond to my comments.

Everyone else was too busy taking Schien’s bait to recognize that the emperor ain’t got no clothes on his naked ass.

What does it say about us here at BBI when we allow a drooling carnival ride operator like Schien to lead us as we blindly stumble down the chute and into the abattoir?

I never claimed to be a genius, but there are some things I learned in a long career on air in radio and TV.

Magicians succeed by applying the principles of misdirection. Schien is nothing more than a behind the mic hack, but as long as he can utilize techniques similar to Mr Magic as successfully as this proves he can, he’ll be able to earn a living in broadcasting.

It’s an irony that I’m sure isn’t lost on you, Optimus, that those who are most vocal in their animosity towards guys like Schein – those who continue to ask, “how the hell can this guy keep his job,” are the people most responsible for his job security. As long as they fall for the misdirection Schein will be fine.

This isn't to say that all talking heads do nothing more than present audio or video versions of 3 card monte. There are those who present thoughtful, even insightful commentary. That isn't in Schein's job description.

Recognizing the difference and rewarding those who deserve one's attention is an ability that needs to be developed by many of our BBI brethren.

Optimus-NY : 5/11/2012 10:18 pm : link
well said again. Your comments about directing our attention to those who are actually substance over style, or steak over sizzle to make a food analogy, is something that we should emphasize. Take the morning show on SiriusXM with Bob Papa and Ross Tucker. They actually make you think when they are on in the morning, and the same goes for Pat Kirwan on Movin the Chains in the afternoon (Tim Ryan is good, but sometimes has "brain farts" if that's how his counterpoints can be classified).

It's like an old coworker of mine taught me a few years back: shit rises to the top. If you have a valid brain in your cranium then you are at a distinct disadvantage, unless you know how to play the part of Lenny (Of Mice and Men I'm taking here), while actually being George--something which I suspect Scheinola is doing.

His uncle got him into the business, as did Evan Roberts on WFAN, but he can't be as obnoxious as he comes across over the air: it is most certainly an act--one which irks many rational fans. We as an audience need to seek out people who inspire thought, instead of those who inspire bouts of mental diarrhea. It's hard to find them, but they are there. We just have to bring attention to them.
