Brandon Jacobs Not A Lock To Make 49ers

Mr. Nickels : 6/3/2012 7:23 pm
Eric Davis interview: Brandon Jacobs isn't a lock to make the #49ers final roster. Same type of player as Anthony Dixon. #NFL

Davis was on Sirius discussing 49ers issues. Also Randy Moss looking good and Crabtree "not a #1".

Either way I think Brandon Jacobs is done as a Giant this reminds me so much of Amani Toomer signing with the Chiefs (bet you forgot about that too). Jacobs is in direct competition with Anthony Dixon. Gore Hunter and James are a lock to make the team.
Crabtree is really looking like a guy who wont be there much

longer. Moss may not be what he once was but motivated and in shape I could see him successful there. I'd take
Mario over Crabtree in a second at this point.

I agree with you. I never understood the hype surrounding Crabtree. From what I saw in college I just didn't believe he was going to be a stud WR like so many predicted.

I think people are overly critical of Crabtree.
arcarsenal : 6/3/2012 7:56 pm : link
He's actually a pretty good player. To catch 72 passes for close to 900 yards in 15 games in that offense with Alex Smith under center really isn't bad at all. This was the first year he even played in a preseason game. He didn't do much of anything against us in either of the games we played against SF this past season but he did catch a TD pass in the Divisional rd. against the Saints.

stated several times here that Jacobs was no lock to make his new team. I agree. He didn't have a fork stuck in his back but he was close...too close for me to have wanted the Giants to keep him another year.

A few years ago I heard about Crabtree from just about every savvy collge football fan. The guy was destined to be great. Fantastic prospect. Yeah, 72 catches for 900+ yards is not bad but no where near his college hype.
The 49ers
Eric from BBI : Admin : 6/3/2012 8:15 pm : link
are the right team for Jacobs, but they have a lot of talent at that position. Unless someone gets hurt, even if Jacobs makes the team, he may not get a lot of touches.

Do you give the touches to Kendall Hunter or Jacobs? To me, that's the battle.

I say "right team," I mean the style of offense.
Jacobs is #4 max

on that team

also Crabtree would be a nice fit to see with a real QB

The 49ers were not a pass oriented team. They were a low-risk, ball control team. Crabtree's production was very good last year for a WR playing in that offense with Alex Smith under center. He's very talented and if he played with a better QB in a more pass centric offense, his numbers would be more impressive.
Disagree on Crabtree
Mark C : 6/3/2012 9:56 pm : link
If Eli was throwing to him, he'd be a stud.
And, Jay on the Island:

If you saw what he did in college and didn't think Crabtree would be a star in this league, I have no idea what made you sour on him. Please elaborate.

Mark C : 6/3/2012 10:01 pm : link
Yes, maybe there aren't a lot of touches for him on the Giants this season, but it sure would be nice to have a fresh Jacobs coming off the bench and stepping in for injuries at that position, a la OJ Anderson once upon a time. ... At the right price, of course.

I know that Crabtree put up impressive numbers in college but I just did not see a superstar receiver that everyone made him out to be.
I wondered if he had the speed
Jay on the Island : 6/3/2012 10:33 pm : link
to be a consistent deep threat in the NFL.
Thanks Jay. Cuz
Mark C : 6/3/2012 11:02 pm : link
I saw a guy who basically caught everything, made a boatload of clutch plays and basically couldn't be covered by college defenders.

when I heard that Jacobs signed with the niners, my thought was where does he fit into that situation. Running back was not a need for them and I don't see him getting much action. Even if Gore goes down they have the depth to pick up the slack and it sure won't be Jacobs who would be the next in line.
Agree,,,,,,
Doomster : 6/4/2012 7:39 am : link
Crabtree seems to be more a #2, than a #1.....he's good, but he is nowhere near, that go to, #1 receiver.....

As for Jacobs, I don't think he is done....he is a good, reliable #2 back....if his touches are limited, and he is fresh, he can be a valuable asset....

As for Moss, how many times can he reinvent himself? Nobody wanted him last year....he did not play for a year, so in a sense, any injuries he had are healed....but he has lost the "edge" from not playing(actually, two years, because the year before he hardly played, even when he played)....his biggest problem has not been his natural ability, it's that "thing" between his ears......BB had to "treat" him differently from his other players, and coddle this guy, to get him to perform.....but even that can only go so far....Harbaugh's coaching won't go to that extent, making him look weak in the eyes of the rest of his players....and then, there is the way you play Moss.....you get physical with him and you get in his head, and then Moss's magic act comes into play, as he disappears in the game.....
Two Comments: one about BJ and the Crabtree
jjgmrg901 : 6/4/2012 7:47 am : link
1. Would BJ make our team automatically if he had not made choice of going to SF? I ask that because the general theme of this thread is that he is done? Would we have kept him for his effect on Bradshaw or his motivation?
2. Crabtree seems to be a typical. I was a stud in college. I got the big the buck I don't have to improve. I think this will tell a lot about cry baby Harbaugh. I think if he was Giant neither TC or Eli would let him loaf.
I would imagine that it's tough for Smith to be a true leader on SF.
Stu : 6/4/2012 9:40 am : link
If Manning had decided to go there, Smith would have been released. I just don't see his teammates looking up to him.

If you think Harbaugh is soft on his players/stars you don't know what you're talking about.
Re: Jacobs
Dubs : 6/4/2012 9:51 am : link
This shouldn't be news to anyone. He's clearly the fourth RB AT BEST and has always been the fourth RB AT BEST. He may be the fifth RB behind Dixon. Not all teams carry four RBs. No one carries five RBs.

It's just math. I love BJ, but he's nearing the end, and if I'm SF, I'm certainly not parting with Hunter over him, and Dixon is younger than BJ and brings a similar style of running.
Dubs sorry I was not more direct
jjgmrg901 : 6/4/2012 10:56 am : link
I am questioning whether or not Harbaugh is tough or not on his players. My comment has to do with he still does not believe the first fumble was legit.
That was what my cry baby comment was aimed at. I have seen his interviews and he is very full of himself. Not a TC type of coach imho.
Well, he certainly has an ego
Dubs : 6/4/2012 11:01 am : link
That's true. But, he doesn't let the inmates run the asylum.

The oline did a decent job on that play

jacobs short area quickness is very, very bad. when a player goes downhill with that kind of momentum and speed you HAVE to make him miss. Stop your feet or do something. 9ers defender was undisciplined on that play.
