EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—Sitting in front of his locker, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul looked bigger than last season, when he became one of the NFL’s top defensive ends.
Pierre-Paul said he had gained only five pounds. Must have been five pounds of muscle.
"Becoming more of a man," Pierre-Paul said with a smile at Tuesday’s minicamp.
At 6-5, 295 pounds, Pierre-Paul moves with the agility of someone much smaller. |

I just hope they did not slow him down. We dont need him to be quick for a 295lb man. We need him to be so quick that the O-line has no chance. I would prefer to give up a few lbs to make that happen.
he's not a 3-4 5-tech.
he doesn't need the strength... he needs the quickness/speed. since jpp's arms so long and his overall length is so oustanding, when he extends out his arms its impossible for tight ends and lineman to get leverage on him. By just the length of his arms alone he can control blockers and keep them off his chest. Because of this he doesn't really need to be so fucking strong
i think he came into the nfl at 275 out of usf. and i remember watching his college highlights and he was a little more quick than he was today. maybe adding 15-20 pounds of muscle had an impact on that? jpp is still fast enough but im not sure if getting heavier is really all that necessary for him considering his skill set
Strength, speed, athleticism, motor, etc... In fact, I would argue that his anticipation and first step isn't elite at all...
I remember when Tiki added some muscle weight one year to get stronger, and it took away just enough of his quickness to blunt the edge. Next year he came back without the weight and was better than ever. But JPP is still growing into his mature frame, so this could be a different matter, and if he is as quick at 295? Oh wow.
JPP isn't a freak because he's fast. That's Osi's calling. He's a freak because he's explosively powerful.
3rd and long is gonna be fun to watch
and has ridiculous, almost Tuck-like ability to stay on his feet.
With Osi and Kiwi getting looks at end JPP will slide over more -- at close to 300 he would be the best defense tackle in the NFL.
Because he was getting beat up early in his career... It wasn't until he started rigorous offseason training with Greg Comella that his durability and stamina started to greatly improve...
The guy does back flips @280lbs. I Think he will be ok
But he is absolutely not moving to DT any time soon...
has the kind of toughness to make plays intuitively, meaning he adjusts to the situation he is in, he never was a pure outside rush, beat the T with pure speed. 295 for him doesn't scare me, I think he will be just as, if not more disruptive on D.
I mean situationally at any given point at that size he is the best pass rusher from the inside. I actually love when he and Tuck slide in -- the stunts are lethal and takes the option to chip off the table. If you want to double them it's an honest double.
Going to happen, have you looked at his frame, there was no way he was going to maintain 275. He may get down to 285, but his 275 days are over.
What games/plays/series of plays that make you like jpp pass rushing inside?
He had a sack of brady on a stunt in the regular season, but one of my personal criticisms of fewell was lining up jpp inside. he doesnt really standout to me pass rushing as a tackle
same with tollefson
Hopefully he doesnt lose any explosion/quikness
I believe in JPP.
Come week 1 he'll be down to 285-290 . IMO his ideal weight is 280
of experts here. I just wait to see.
If you're talking about run defense -- you can make a case. But generally, TEs don't really double team a DE. They just chip them initially before releasing into the second level or getting their hands on a safety/lb coming downhill. I suppose on slide-down blocks DEs can get doubled versus the run, but slide down blocking is all about lateral ability where speed/technique is emphasized more so than holding your ground against a push (like the power game). And in the power game, defensive tackles get doubled team a LOT more than defensive ends.
JPP's length also helps him two gap, so I still think he can dominate on run defense even when being blocked by two guys with just his long arms.
As far as pass protection goes, beating double teams is 100% all about quickness (and in some cases working your way free with effort/pass rush moves) -- never just sheer strength.
Me, I don't think its necessary for JPP to bulk up. There was talk last season about jpp getting bigger by about 15 pounds I believe. Even more? Its unnecessary in my view. JPP absolutely has the frame to hold that weight, so maybe he won't lose some quickness as a result of being heavier/stronger. But we'll see
If it 'aint broke, don't fix it? lol
He said he gained 5 pounds. Most players lose that much in one regular season game. If five pounds is accurate, it's insignificant
are aware of what the best weight for him should be. For all we know he didn't lose any quickness consider there is a full offseason this year.
he can do at 295 before I have an opinion on this. In all seriousness though, I really doubt the NY giants training staff wasn't a part of this and if we don't have a way to monitor a players, speed/explosiveness/quickness while training we've got bigger problems than JPP putting on a few pounds. It's not like you just gain weight lifting all of a sudden i'm guessing they monitored his progress along the way.
Simply put, JPP is a beast. JPP will be fine... I mean how much can a lineman adding some muscle weight really hurt them? It's not like he got fat. Besides, I remember all the scouts talking about how much weight he could add to his frame when he got drafted. Let's not get spoiled here, we've got bigger worries than a 2nd year player that you could easily argue was the 1st or 2nd best defender in the league last year.
I always thought JPP played at 280 last year, add 5 lbs. = 285.
ever post anything that resembles fucking optimism? I mean seriously.
Who else is going to show up overweight and out of shape? Guess the Super Bowl really went to some of their heads.
I'm excited by the prospect of this dude being as freakishly good this year, but with 5 extra pounds of muscle to push people around.
I haven't been this excited about a player since, well, Eli Manning. What a time to be a Giant fan!
3rd and long is going to be REAL fun to watch.....With the NASCAR package QBs better keep Down & Distance managable on 3rd down...I wonder how many false starts they will generate on the long D&D....
he's a world class athlete in the prime of his career in his early 20's. He could lose 5 lbs very quickly and be right back to his usual dominant self. Not a big deal.
him getting bigger realize his age? He said it himself, he's becoming more of a man. He's 23 years old. Anyone here gain a few pounds from 21 to 26? He's maturing from a young man into a full grown man. Honestly its fucking scary. Add to that constantly improving technique and the nano second he might have lost is literally nothing.
Not among the things I'd even remotely be worried about. He's a DE, not a CB. If I'm an opposing offensive tackle, I'm worried.
game is not a quickness game. He's a power player now. As area junc has consistently pointed out, JPP is usually the last DL to move.
The reason why JPP is a freak is his size/speed combination. This just adds to that.
Fucking beast.
That is all.
the quickness in his game. JFC.
He's a big man and he's filling out in his early 20s, completely normal. This isn't clumsy unnecessary wait he manufactured by force-feeding and "help". This is a good thing, some of you need to relax.
God forbid Ralph tweets that Eli has a double cheeseburger, someone will inevitably suggest Coughlin has lost the locker room and Eli has a super bowl success hangover.
He was known as a guy who needed to bulk up more and that he had the frame to do just that. I'm usually the last Giant apologist on this boar..but if the coaches are fine with it, are you really going to bitch about it?
His length and strength advantage is greater against tackles. He has more space to use and he goes up against lighter and straight up weaker players than him on the edge. Those beatings he put on tackles through pure strength like vs. the Skins and Jets.
I don't think we see that as often at DT. Which is why JPP arrived last year when Osi was out and he moved outside as full-time DE. But one year of JPP learning more techniques from a veteran Tuck and Osi both playing in "prove it" years should be worth him playing inside more to let the 3 of them be there at the same time. Maybe 2 years from now he can be even more dominant outside with more advanced moves outside and extra experience inside.
One of the worst negatives you see in a scouting report is that a player looks too robotic and mechanical. JPP is the least robotic and mechanical looking 290lb player I've ever seen. He's so fluid with his movements, I think he has the tools to develop great moves outside.
But this is a year to go all out and repeat. When a team has a dominant front 7 and an elite QB they will always have a shot. That's what the Giants will have this next season.
JPP is the young dominant Ace who nearly won a Cy Young year 2. Tuck can be an Ace if he's healthy. Osi used to be an Ace but only throws 91 now with some walks and homers but still K's a ton of guys and can dominate for stretches. When this team has all of them going at the same time it's the equivalent of a beastly pitching staff. Because they have great depth on top of the top end talent.
Eli is the clutchest heart of the order in the league. Hall of Fame clutch. They might not finish Top 3 in hitting every year but they're the best team in baseball at hitting in the late innings of close games. And consistently the clutchest around during the biggest moments. And not only is he clutch but he plays every game every year.
The Giants are in a great position to do something special next year. Repeat means Dynasty or atleast Dynasty potential. And I really feel like this is the year where this team can peak. Its up to the OL but Eli proved last year that he could win with a below average group protecting him. I also really can't see this OL being worse than this past seasaon. This team missed an opportunity in '08 but this opportunity is even greater because of what they're going for and how well they look set up for the future. But the potential of an Osi/Tuck/JPP attack is at its peak right now. Should be a great year.

I gather you never saw Reggie White or Deacon Jones play?
But JPP's future is to be as good as those two were.
Maybe even better...

Didnt he play in the 60s?
Reggie White was a monster. I think it's safe to say that JPPs floor is Strahan or Tuck at the very least. That's saying alot.
I never saw Deacon Jones play, (saw him on Big Miked Dupp SB46 week) but he reminds me of Osi.
I think JPP is probably on par with anyone for a man of his size. Reggie White was a more powerful player and just a freak athlete for a man his size. Deacon Jones was a great talent who took advantage of a dirty rule and rode it to greatness. But even with that, he wasn't a feared run defender. Teams ran right at him at times because he was focused on the pass rush so much. So no idea where to put him.
But just because of his quickness and fluidity he's nothing like I've seen for a guy that big and strong. Peppers was close but I don't think he was as smooth. And Mario Williams might be the most naturally gifted athlete the DE position has seen, but I don't think he's ever shown the fluidity of JPP.
He's a beast.
just wait til he grows up.
slows him a bit, the coaches will let him know.
because we're switching to a 3-4 D.
Something close a maxed out frame. When you read about his background entering the league and realize that he never participated in a true off season weight training program in his college days due to bouncing around from college to college you realize how much room he had for improvement in that area. Look at a guy like Suh who was embedded in the Nebraska strength program for years....he entered the league with a strong foundation in strength and conditoning. That is one area where JPP certainly had much room for growth. If he were overtraining I might be concerned, but I don't think that is the case.
Likely looks faster in his college days due to him not facing NFL caliber offensive linemen.
the snap. That has much more to do with technique, experience, and the ability to anticipate snaps by reading keys and snap counts, than it has anything to do with total weight or even considerable over-weight.
The proof of that (weight not influencing get-off at the snap) was evident when we watched Fred Robbins play.
Adding 5 pounds of muscle and losing 5 pounds of fat at the same time would be outstanding.
You'd expect the game to 'slow down' a bit for him this season. He's gained valuable experience and built confidence with his success. Physically he should be at his peak with more mature muscle development. He's going to destroy QB's. Can't wait.
HE said he added 5 lbs - means he played at 290 last year. I never believe what is listed for weight. Carl Banks was listed every year at 235 lbs and hardly ever played for the Giants under 245. Leonard Marshall was always listed at 285 and said himself he played at minimum of 300.
He is going to be 295 and probably will still look lean.
But he was not chasing RBs 10-15 yeards down the field, laying out vertically and dragging them down from behind like JPP was last season... LT was the one doing that back then and he was doing it at 245lbs... I've only seen clips of Deacon...
It is a natural to get a little bigger as you get older. A person just fills out.
Nothing to see here. Move on. Move on.
that someone could be so physically fit and weigh almost 300 pounds. I'm 6'0". In my prime I may have been a max of 200 in great (weight-trained) shape.
5th leg is probably as long as his arms and weighs about 15 pounds...
what JPP does next year. I believe this is the first full spring he has had with coaches at any level, which makes it amazing what he has done so far.
and what Reggie White did, most remarkably, was constantly work vs double teams, and still be disruptive and productive.

Did he have that "change me into a fucking Centaur" surgery during the off-season?
