EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—Sitting in front of his locker, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul looked bigger than last season, when he became one of the NFL’s top defensive ends.
Pierre-Paul said he had gained only five pounds. Must have been five pounds of muscle.

"Becoming more of a man," Pierre-Paul said with a smile at Tuesday’s minicamp.

At 6-5, 295 pounds, Pierre-Paul moves with the agility of someone much smaller.

Deacon Jones is really old school
NykAllDay1 : 6/17/2012 2:55 am : link
Didnt he play in the 60s?

Reggie White was a monster. I think it's safe to say that JPPs floor is Strahan or Tuck at the very least. That's saying alot.

I never saw Deacon Jones play, (saw him on Big Miked Dupp SB46 week) but he reminds me of Osi.
only in terms of fluidity

I think JPP is probably on par with anyone for a man of his size. Reggie White was a more powerful player and just a freak athlete for a man his size. Deacon Jones was a great talent who took advantage of a dirty rule and rode it to greatness. But even with that, he wasn't a feared run defender. Teams ran right at him at times because he was focused on the pass rush so much. So no idea where to put him.

But just because of his quickness and fluidity he's nothing like I've seen for a guy that big and strong. Peppers was close but I don't think he was as smooth. And Mario Williams might be the most naturally gifted athlete the DE position has seen, but I don't think he's ever shown the fluidity of JPP.

He's a beast.

just wait til he grows up.
I'm sure if added weight
mrvax : 6/17/2012 11:49 am : link
slows him a bit, the coaches will let him know.
Obviously the staff told him to gain weight.....

because we're switching to a 3-4 D.
I might be concerned if JPP had entered the league with

Something close a maxed out frame. When you read about his background entering the league and realize that he never participated in a true off season weight training program in his college days due to bouncing around from college to college you realize how much room he had for improvement in that area. Look at a guy like Suh who was embedded in the Nebraska strength program for years....he entered the league with a strong foundation in strength and conditoning. That is one area where JPP certainly had much room for growth. If he were overtraining I might be concerned, but I don't think that is the case.

Likely looks faster in his college days due to him not facing NFL caliber offensive linemen.
The weakest aspect of his "speed" game was prolly his get go off
BlueLou : 6/17/2012 2:56 pm : link
the snap. That has much more to do with technique, experience, and the ability to anticipate snaps by reading keys and snap counts, than it has anything to do with total weight or even considerable over-weight.

The proof of that (weight not influencing get-off at the snap) was evident when we watched Fred Robbins play.
Adding 5 pounds of muscle might be good

Adding 5 pounds of muscle and losing 5 pounds of fat at the same time would be outstanding.
JPP is going to be a beast this season
Torrag : 6/17/2012 6:26 pm : link
You'd expect the game to 'slow down' a bit for him this season. He's gained valuable experience and built confidence with his success. Physically he should be at his peak with more mature muscle development. He's going to destroy QB's. Can't wait.

HE said he added 5 lbs - means he played at 290 last year. I never believe what is listed for weight. Carl Banks was listed every year at 235 lbs and hardly ever played for the Giants under 245. Leonard Marshall was always listed at 285 and said himself he played at minimum of 300.

He is going to be 295 and probably will still look lean.
Reggie White was ridiculously powerful...
Matt G : 6/18/2012 8:34 am : link
But he was not chasing RBs 10-15 yeards down the field, laying out vertically and dragging them down from behind like JPP was last season... LT was the one doing that back then and he was doing it at 245lbs... I've only seen clips of Deacon...
JPP is 23 years old.

It is a natural to get a little bigger as you get older. A person just fills out.

Nothing to see here. Move on. Move on.
It is incredable
mrvax : 6/18/2012 10:23 am : link
that someone could be so physically fit and weigh almost 300 pounds. I'm 6'0". In my prime I may have been a max of 200 in great (weight-trained) shape.

5th leg is probably as long as his arms and weighs about 15 pounds...
I am especially excited to see

what JPP does next year. I believe this is the first full spring he has had with coaches at any level, which makes it amazing what he has done so far.
Matt G - Deacon had that kind of chase em down ability,
BlueLou : 6/18/2012 1:14 pm : link
and what Reggie White did, most remarkably, was constantly work vs double teams, and still be disruptive and productive.
lol wut
