up controversy is a common tactic for trying to generate interest in a story or a career. But this is really ridiculous. I will happily eat crow if I am wrong, but I would be very surprised if Bennett is lining up at TE on opening day against his former team.
He'll at least be good for blocking, which given the questions about the OL and the other TE options, they'll more than be able to put to good use.
That said, people probably wouldn't be bad off for reining in their homer-ized expectations about him suddenly becoming something that he never was in Dallas or in college just because he's a Giant now.
...was Bennett himself. It wasn't because he was behind Witten on the depth chart, it was because he didn't live up to expectations after they drafted him in the 2nd round. If he had, the Cowboys coaches would have found ways to use him.
The Giants are giving him a second chance on the hope that he has matured. Whether he seizes that opportunity or drops the ball once again is anybody's guess. Unfortunately, most people don't change. At least not for the better.
I'd like the 30 seconds of my life back for having to read that crap Â
Do you really think that will happen? And if the writer had an ounce of brains he would know someone with a hamstring injury is not going to go all out during a minicamp. What a waste
the author had no use for Bennett before he became a Giant and is still pursuing that line. Have to trust our coaching staff right now, not some guy with an axe to grind.
serviceable, probably very average receiving threat
anything more than that is a plus.
there is more to being a great receiver than tremendous size/strength/speed. Its learning how to box out defenders, come back to the ball, learning how to sink your hips, maximize your length, break off your routes sharp, do not drift/be lazy, etc. I could go on
Bennett came into the league extremely raw in all of those areas and needed coaching up. Greg Cosell thought Bennett would be a very good player if coached up. Unfortunately the guy the shittiest work ethic and personality you'll see on television in his rookie year.
The Giants will not cut him. We'll see if he can develop under Pope and realize his potential. He's already off to a bad start with the injuries and pope saying 291 pounds is too heavy for what they want him to be. Yikes!
was slacking off, the coaches would be all over him and making comments that he needs to step things up like they did with Sintim.
It could just as easily be argued that if he was slacking off, he could have used the hamstring as an excuse to ride a bike all camp rather than being on the field doing what he can.
they've played against him 2x a season for a few years now. They would not have persued him if they thought he was worthless. They know what he's capable of delivering and what they should expect. TC has no problem sending him to the bench when he doesn't give his best effort. And we know TC will do just that. Bennett could have sttod on his head in Dallas and spit wooden nickels and he still wasn't getting the nod over Witten.
If he wants a career in football he will have to work at it. If he is happy to take the 2.5 million and run than he will dog his way out of the NFL. Nobody but Bennet knows what he is thinking, certainly not this writer, but if he had hamstring issues than the coaches would likely tell him to go easy. The weight may me an issue but not until camp, he could come into camp heavier or he could shed some weight, that remains to be seen. How long has he had the hamstring issue? Didn't Nicks have a weight problem coming out of college because of a hamstring issue? You can make whatever you want of this stuff but I would wait until camp and the first exibition game before I started to judge this guy.
I've been as critical of Bennett as a Cowboy as anyone on this site, but Bennett hasn't been practicing because he tweaked his hamstring. Anyone who writes a story on him and doesn't recognize that, shouldn't be writing that story.
Secondly, way, way, way too much is being made out of the weight issue. Look at Bennett. He looks thin. He's a BIG, BIG man. Ballard was 285 and Bennett is bigger than him. Bennett actually dropped his body fat as he increased his weight. As he asked the reporters, "Do I look fat?"
Jints are not cutting Bennett to have Pascoe as the sole TE with any NFL experience on the roster who could play week 1. As much as they may like Hopkins and Robinson, it's not happening.
Plus, they love Pascoe's versatility and the ability to use him as a backup fullback behind Hynoski.
wWhen you begin the each year knowing that you are backing up a guy who catches 80-100 balls per year, that is tough. No matter what you do you cant be tha starter. plus they throw to to the WR.
he has major ability in passing and runninhe is making the team
Seriously, by most accounts this guy sounds like a lazy turd. Let's hope he's matured. I'd rather have an over achiever like Pascoe playing for the team I root for than an under achieving diva.
Even though Pro Football Focus gets little respect around here, they graded Bennett as the #1 blocking TE in the NFL last season. He is good at something the Giants value.
I was at an event this past Mon. I was with 3 of my friends and I saw this gentleman with this huge ring on. I looked closely and noticed the 4 Super Bowl trophies. He told me he has worked for the Giants for 20 years. He said he has never been around a bigger Primma Donna than Bennett. He said everything is an issue and everyting is a problem with this guy. I believe the writer, sounds to me the only reason Bennett has never made it further is Bennett himself.
isn't getting cut. Sorry, but with all due respect to the writer of that post, I think he's jumping to conclusions. For starters, the off-season was way shorter this year so new guys coming in had less time to work with the coaches on the play book. Second, if you're in your contract year and can't show your stuff due to an injury, well, yeah, you're going to be a little frustrated.
Third, what the blogger fails to take into consideration in trying to "decipher" Bennett's body language is that the guy was trying to work his way back from a hamstring. He could have sat out the entire spring with an eye toward getting healthy for camp, but gave it a go. And in giving it a go, he took things slow so as to not make the injury worse. How is that poor body language?
And here's something that the blogger didn't mention. Every day the media had access, I saw Bennett at his locker, his head in the play book. If that's a sign of someone who doesn't give a crap, then I'd like to see what someone who does give a crap looks like.
I respect others' opinions, but the idea of the team cutting Bennett just to pick up more draft picks next year is ludicrous. And as for him reportedly being a headache, trust me when I say that team has put up with bigger headaches in recent years and have done so with a smile so long as said headaches have produced.
I am not sure right that he's the long term answer, but I am interested to see what he brings to the table once camp starts.
Cut Bennett so The Giants get a 7th Round comp pick for Tolly?
Was that the jib of the blog?
YIKES!

Maybe this is what he needs a chance to prove himself
with Eli and a fresh start .
