Player numbers are position-related and governed by extensive NFL rules. Duplicates are becoming commonplace with 90 on a roster.
The announcers (Dierdorf, etc.) have spotters that are supposed to identify the players for them. Apparently the spotters aren't doing very well these days because I've heard the same kind of mistakes in multiple exhibition games this year.
It's also happening on the internet print coverage. They had Da'Rel Scott and Hughes confused last week.
Actually, if you were a football player with the last name Avogadro, could you just request a jersey with the "#" symbol directly under your name? That would be cool...
