Free Agent List and High Salary questions

stretch234 : 12/29/2012 8:42 am
Here is the complete FA list for the Giants, plus some of the high paid players who may be candidates for some type of change.

I see Cruz, Bennett, Brown, Beatty, Booth & Carr resigned
Would like Philips & Tynes, but I think they move on

QB David Carr UFA
RB Andre Brown ERFA
WR Ramses Barden UFA
WR Victor Cruz RFA
WR Domenik Hixon UFA
TE Travis Beckum UFA
TE Martellus Bennett UFA
TE Bear Pascoe RFA
PK Lawrence Tynes UFA
OT William Beatty UFA
OT Sean Locklear UFA
OG Kevin Boothe UFA
DL Shaun Rogers UFA
DL Osi Umenyiora UFA
LB Chase Blackburn UFA
CB Brian Witherspoon UFA
SS Kenny Phillips UFA

For the list below, I see Webster and Snee adding a year and staying. Deihl gone. Canty has low bonus so they could restructure some of his money. Rolle as well - he covers 2 positions. Baas still has guar money due so he is here. Eli & Baas restructured in 2012. If they are allowed to again I see it happening again.

Canty 2 yrs 12.7 salary 2.25 bonus
Webster 1 yr 7M 2.975
Snee 1 yr 6.2 2.5
Eli 3 yrs 45m 15m he took 9M restr in 2012
Rolle 2 yrs 14m 4.5 still has 3m guar
Deihl 1 yr 4m 3.35 sigb bonus is 3M
Baas 3 yr 14m 7.25

There is going to be some pretty significant change with this group

Players can't restructure again until 12 months have passed since
Optimus-NY : 12/29/2012 8:52 am : link
they last restructured. Pat Traina confirmed this.

What makes you think Tynes is gone? He's 35, which is ok for a kicker.

Reese has his work cut out for him

Our offensive line will look very different next year. There should be at least 2 new starters. Diehl is probably gone. Snee stays but restructures. Beatty is resigned. No guarantee that he keeps Beatty and Boothe.

The Defensive line will probably be JPP, Linval, Canty and Tuck. Kiwi and Tracy depth a DE, with Kuhn and Austin at DT. Not sure if Kuhn will be ready for the beginning of the season.
Don't worry Eric, neither does he.

based on this years performance
hitdog42 : 12/29/2012 9:32 am : link
you can def put boley in the restructure camp. Hoping it was injuries, but a pathetic second half performance from him if not.
beatty has earned himself a solid pay day. I think they need to lock of boothe for no other reason then they dont have a replacement and he is very solid. the right side of the line is what needs to be addressed.
Defensively there just isnt much of an identity this year. Its been sack the passer, but with that absent... we stink against the run and the pass, so its pretty brutal in trying to assess going forward with this unit.
Tynes
stretch234 : 12/29/2012 9:35 am : link
Only reason I say that is the people ahead of him who need to be resigned as more priority.

When you look at things, they are going to need a DE. Tracy is a LB who can rush - he is a situational pass rusher as best.

They are going to need a CB whether Webster is here or not.

DE & CB look to be their 1st 2 picks
Even if the Giants get lucky here and go on another run, changes will
Optimus-NY : 12/29/2012 9:37 am : link
have to be made---significant ones at that perhaps. The lines must be re-fortified on both sides. MIKE is a problem, as is CB and Safety to an extent.
Tyns won't cost much stretch
Optimus-NY : 12/29/2012 9:38 am : link
He's a kicker (an above average one, not an elite kicker), and he likes it here. Sign him to a 3 year deal, and that should be it for him.
Considering
DG_89 : 12/29/2012 9:53 am : link
the age and underperformance of the OL this year, it has to be THE focus in the offseason. Unless Reese shocks all of us and nabs Jake Long, I see Beatty back at LT and the #1A priority before or during the free agent signing period. 1B is locking up Cruz long term
they need to let hixon go
hitdog42 : 12/29/2012 9:54 am : link
almost so that they are not tempted to play him over randle.
I'd rather Tynes move on
BlueManFu : 12/29/2012 9:57 am : link
I think we got the most out of him, but in this day and age you need a guy that can consistently knock it through from 50+...you saw a lot of guys this year have success from 55+ and Sir Lawrence just does not have the leg to hit from long distance any more.

I'd rather draft the next Blair Walsh, Justin Tucker, or Greg Zeurlein with a 6th or 7th round pick.
Blackburn will be back too. He's 29, he'll come cheap
NbgBlue : 12/29/2012 10:19 am : link
the coaching staff love him and he hustles.
While I think Boothe deserves to be back and I like Boothe
DavidinBMNY : 12/29/2012 10:24 am : link
I wouldn't be shocked in the giants make a play at upgrading he position either. Boothe has been a great find but now that he has been a reliable starter he is going to cost more.

In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the giants bring in 2 OL in FA.
David - I wouldnt either
Optimus-NY : 12/29/2012 11:03 am : link
Boothe is replaceable.
At Guard
Pat from Inside Football : 12/29/2012 11:55 am : link
Boothe has been solid, but James Brewer has been doing some work at guard, so he could be an option, especially if the Giants land themselves a viable option at tackle next year assuming they don't go back to Diehl/Locklear.

Brandon Mosley, on IR, is another option at guard, but he might need another year after missing this season.

Locklear played well
mikeygiants : 12/29/2012 12:19 pm : link
but I don't want to see the FO rely on another player recovering from serious knee surgery as a starter next year.
Let's face it,
Doomster : 12/29/2012 12:28 pm : link
Reese has his work cut out for him....

He is stuck with Baas....

He needs to restructure Snee.....Snee needs surgery....we have no idea of the outcome....

Diehl has to be replaced....I don't think that guy is on the roster, but because of cap restraints, I think the Giants will try to fill it from within....

Beatty and Boothe could have Reese over a barrel.....while not great linemen, right now they are the best we have.....if you don't keep the continuity from that side of the line, this could be a cluster f**k next year, if Snee is still recuperating and the new RT doesn't work out, and Baas plays his usual game......

Eli had a bad year....it happens....yes the OL sucked....yes the running game was not consistent.....yes receivers were hurt.....yes receivers dropped balls.....but Eli made some bad decisions, and forced things, and threw int's he shouldn't have.....he missed wide open receivers.....Nine seasons...one "elite" year.....can he do it again?

We went into this season without an experienced backup RB, when we cut Ware, and kept Scott....how did that work out? We ended up running AB into the ground, because we had no veteran backup....Brown finally was given a chance and picked up the slack and then was injured.....something he has a history with.....Wilson, for whatever reason was not utilized enough....even in garbage time of the last game, he wasn't out there.....AB can no longer be the starter.....he would be good as the second back....If Wilson can't hack it as number one next year, than a veteran back is needed....Scott will be gone....Brown, who had injuries in college, his first year in the pro's, and his first year with any significant playing time, is a #2 or #3 back, not a starter...

Cruz is a #2 receiver....a good one.....but with the cap problems we have, you can't sell the farm for him....Nicks will be watching with interest, what kind of contract he gets.....but Nicks has his own problems.....each season he has played, he has missed playing time with injuries.....Barden/Jernigan/Randle/Hixon....obviously, not all will be back.....Time to cut ties with Beckum....he might be able to play in a different offensive system, but not here....Bennett, if someone hangs a big carrot in front of him, will be gone....

I think Osi goes to the highest bidder, which won't be the Giants.....Unless Tuck immediately goes under the knife, I don't think you can expect much more from him than this year....which kind of makes him a situational player, at over 7 mil...Canty only had one good season, last year....Austin has shown nothing thus far.....Kuhn, who has shown nothing in limited play is coming back from injury....Linval Joseph took a huge step back this year....injury/defensive scheme/plateaued? JPP was not the same player as last year....was he overused at the beginning of the season, due to the play of the DL? The strength of this defense is no longer the DL.....

Linebackers.....once again the joke of the NFL...can't cover, and can't fill at the point of attack....Because of his football smarts, Blackburn makes an occasional play here and there....but his lack of speed and strength, makes him piss poor in coverage if he has to play man to man, and he just does not have the ability to shed blockers and make tackles for no yardage....most of his tackles include 2-3 yards upfield....Boley has seen his playing time reduced, some say because of poor play(which is evident), some say because of injury, which could cause poor play.....JW missed a lot of playing time.....but when healthy enough to play, did not look like the guy last year.....he has made no "plays" this year....he is just a body out there....Paysinger and Herzlich had chances out there and have looked awful....We had hopes for Rivers.....the guy has been a dud....some, were excited when he made a few tackles at the start of the year, but this guy has done nothing....With Kiwi, the linebacker experiment has failed.....he can't cover, and I can't believe how many times guys have run by him for big yardage.....He would be better at DE than linebacker, but I don't know if his neck could stand up to the beating it would get at that position....

We lost TT at the start....there is no way he is coming back after all those surgeries....Prince is showing he can't stay on the field.....Webster, seems to have fallen off a cliff....for two years we have seen him release guys to someone that does not exist.....and now they are going after him, and he looks like Elvis Patterson.....KP, with that knee, will be looking for a "security" contract....I don't think the Giants will offer him one....While Stevie Brown made a few int's this year, he was poor in deep coverage....he stunk up the joint with his tackling...he hits hard, but he misses a lot of open field tackles....Rolle, is a force with his hitting and tackling, when he makes them....but pass coverage? I have never seen a safety take such terrible angles on receivers....and for a guy who is suppose to have good coverage skills, he is average at best....another defensive player that is overpaid....Sash is useless....As is Tryon....Coe was better than those two, yet was IR'd and released....Hosley, is a rookie and has had good and bad moments....Will Hill did not have enough playing time...he was beat a couple times, but had good coverage when beat and guys just made plays on him....

If it weren't for turnovers, this defense would be one of the worse in the NFL.....it had no pass rush....couldn't stop the run, WHEN IT HAD TO....receivers were constantly wide open....how this defense has only given up 337 points, is kind of amazing.....

I think Reese realized that next year and the year after were going to be transition years....and he hoped he could get one more year out of guys that were questionable, and it didn't quite work out....while the Giants may be 8-8 or 9-7, expectations did not match results....because of personnel changes, and possible coaching changes(which I tend to doubt, it's no the Giant way), this team could easily become a middle of the pack team, the next few seasons....

REALITY....
ct.fatboy1080 : 12/29/2012 12:45 pm : link
is not a fun thing. very good post!! It was spot on, but I have to go with the old addage "its never as good as it seems...and its never as bad as it seems" I think this holds true for the Giants!!

it's not that awful.
Coughlin needs to play Brewer
DavidinBMNY : 12/29/2012 12:53 pm : link
Snee has a torn hip. There is no way he can play with any power.
the single biggest impact we could make is bringing in a DC
GmenDynasty : 12/29/2012 1:04 pm : link
whose system will complement the collective skillset of this defense not hinder it.
Now regarding FA
GmenDynasty : 12/29/2012 1:07 pm : link
we need to address OL badly. I would love to see Reese finally bring in that blue goose LT. Yes it will be costly but it will be worth it for how it helps Eli and the run game.

Beatty if he comes at the right price can be played at RT.

Diehl will be a cap casualty.
The only guy I feel certain should go is Diehl
Torrag : 12/29/2012 1:28 pm : link
He's as done as it gets at this point. The rest of that list could go either way depending on how the dominoes fall imo. DD had a good career and helped us win titles. It will be sad to see such a warrior walk out the door. It's time for him to go.

You think Martellus stays or goes?
2 cents
BBurns : 12/29/2012 5:08 pm : link
Brandon Albert OL
Aurthur Jones DT Both young we desperately need a DT
He has power and quickness .
Jasper Brinkley LB is coming into his own tackling
machine . Maybe I am way off base but that could
help free up the #1 pick for a two way DE or pass
rushing beast . Probably go CB BPA in round #2 .
