Beatty's gotta be their top priority of the offseason

.
I thought Osi signed a 1 year extension
Blue Baller : 1/2/2013 3:04 pm : link
That either he or the team needed to void the final year.

or am I mus-remembering?

Followed closely by Cruz and Martellus
GiantBlue : 1/2/2013 3:05 pm : link
for sure.
BB......
Tom [Giants fan] : 1/2/2013 3:07 pm : link
Osi signed a restructured contract for this past year which gave him a raise.
Beatty should be priority number 1
redbeard : 1/2/2013 3:07 pm : link
Why create yet another hole on the oline by letting a good young player walk.

Resign Beatty, extend Cruz, bring back Marty B and Brown
BB, he did,
Big Blue '56 : 1/2/2013 3:09 pm : link
but I understand it's ridulously easy to void by either side
Reasonable chance a team would give up a 1st round pick for Cruz
GloryDayz : 1/2/2013 3:10 pm : link
A team in the bottom third of the draft.

A 1st round tender may not be enough. If the Giants want him to stay a Giant, I think they need to work out a long term deal before FA starts.
if theres 1 guy that is a fan favorite
bigblueviator : 1/2/2013 3:13 pm : link
its Cruz. the reaction to letting him go would be catastrophic.

I LOVE Cruz as player and person,
dee-fense : 1/2/2013 3:14 pm : link
but I don't think Gmen would be unduly burdened by a 1st round pick in his place...and if I was TC, I would hand Jernigan two years of tape on Welker and Cruz for the offseason and say, "come back ready to go. It is time."
I beleive
Pete in MD : 1/2/2013 3:15 pm : link
Osi could void his last year and must have done so already. There was no way he was coming back at a $1 million base salary.

I agree that Beatty should be the top priority. He's a solid starter at a key position.

Pretty much every other UFA is replaceable. What happens with Bennett will be interesting. He showed some talent but the Giants haven't spent a ton of money on TEs in this era and showed than can win without top flight guys at that position. They will definitely have Robinson and most-likely Pascoe back next year.
Wow
gmen4ever : 1/2/2013 3:18 pm : link
That includes a lot of UFAs...some big names too. JR will have his hands full this off season.
Jernigan and Barden
NewBlue : 1/2/2013 3:31 pm : link
I'm surprised that Eli can't develop some routes with them. With Hakeem not practicing every week and Hixon down for 3 or 4 weeks I would have thought that some degree of contribution would have come from these 2. All I hear reported is that Ramses can't beat press coverage, you know what, he has had a lot of time trying to defeat press...JJ....fastest WR on the team, no contribution.
a lot of free agents also potentially means a lot of comp picks
oipolloi : 1/2/2013 3:34 pm : link
I'd like to see the Giants clean house. This team had its chance to get it done this year and came out flat. They need more young, hungry players. I know it's a cliche but I really do think there was too much complacency. Remember Tuck's comment: "We have been down this road before"? I think a lot of the vets expected to turn it on at the end and were not particularly bothered by the early games agst inferior opponents that the Giants just gave away.

Barden and JJ have not had an opportunity
oipolloi : 1/2/2013 3:35 pm : link
Barden looked damn good when he did get to start agst Carolina
Difference between an RFA and ERFA
BlueLou : 1/2/2013 3:39 pm : link
anyone?
Jernigan is a slot WR...
Dunedin81 : 1/2/2013 3:41 pm : link
he isn't taking reps from Cruz and Cruz is a lot more effective inside. Barden is the one who should have been expected to step up in Nicks's stead. He did. For one game. Randle was getting the outside reps at the end of the year and doing a lot better.
the three B's...
BillKo : 1/2/2013 3:41 pm : link
Beatty, Boothe, and Bennett are the big ones.

Followed by Cruz......only second tier here because he is restricted.

Then Hixon.

Carr. Tynes.

and some restructures.

Everyone else on that list is expendable, IMO.
oopps..
BillKo : 1/2/2013 3:42 pm : link
forget two more B's: the Browns, Andre and Stevie..........
Boothe is unspectacular but a good to very good guard plus
Giants61 : 1/2/2013 4:08 pm : link
he has experience playing center on the Giants. I agree he should be considered a priority with Beatty being a top priority for the OL
I think Boothe is a (almost) must sign also
SLIM : 1/2/2013 4:14 pm : link
We need him at guard next year and he ultimately could replace Baas if he doesn't improve/stay healthy.
I'm almost sure all the RFAs and ERFAs will be back
GiantsBRFan : 1/2/2013 4:20 pm : link
And from the UFAs: Rivers, Boothe, Beatty, Tynes, Carr, Bennett and Hixon.
Beatty
AcidTest : 1/2/2013 5:18 pm : link
obviously. But also Boothe. He is a solid guard, and as someone said, can play center.

Bennett is a must resign as well.

Cruz is even more obvious.
must haves
Les in TO : 1/2/2013 5:18 pm : link
WR Victor Cruz RFA
S Stevie Brown RFA
RB Andre Brown RFA

T Will Beatty UFA
OG Kevin Boothe UFA
S Kenny Phillips UFA
TE Martellus Bennett UFA

Of course, all are subject to reasonable market value. In Phillips and Brown's case, a close medical look is warranted.
ERFA = exclusive rights FA
Blue Baller : 1/2/2013 5:33 pm : link
RFA = Restricted FA

An Exclusive-Rights Free Agent is an NFL player who is not under contract, but has only two years of NFL experience. If his former club makes him an offer at the three year veteran minimum salary, then that's it, he has to take it or leave the NFL. These guys have no right to negotiate with other teams. They are "free" only in the sense that they're free to quit.

I'd cut Tuck to sign osi

That has to be the most confidence anyone on BBI has ever shown in Jerrell Jernigan.
Brandon Jacobs

Released ...
Do not think
TMS : 1/2/2013 6:43 pm : link
we over pay for any WR including Cruz or Nicks. Eli has demonstrated that he can work with receivers and make them look better than they are; if they have the skills and work ethic to learn the playbook, run good routes and catch the ball. Barden, Jernigan and Randle could be those guys. Many on this board panicked when Smith was not resigned, think about it.
remember there is a salary cap
newmike2 : 1/2/2013 7:18 pm : link
they can't sign everyone, and get a premiere LBer and shore up the o-line and possible address the d-line and sign all the draftees.. There will be some cap casualties.

If they have to choose between Nicks and Cruz
Scuzzlebutt : 1/2/2013 7:31 pm : link
I would go with Nicks. Nicks is a true difference maker. When healthy, Nicks could be a top 5 WR.... Unfortunately he hasn't been healthy much. Given the opportunity I am curios what JJ could do in the slot.
Why do so many people have trouble with this?
speedywheels : 1/2/2013 7:34 pm : link
Giants simply do not value LB highly - they will NEVER (at least while TC/JR are in charge) get a "premium" guy
One thing is for sure
JoeyBigBlue : 1/2/2013 7:43 pm : link
I do not want to see Bruce Johnson ever again in a Giants uniform. The guy had like 3 straight years on IR just stealing money.
Beatty was not anything more than
LauderdaleMatty : 1/2/2013 8:11 pm : link
average. The fact taht LT is important raises his value to the Giants but I wonder what his market will be.

Cruz with a long term deal is more important long term. He's a star and the best slot WR in the NFL.
.....
Micko : 1/2/2013 8:39 pm : link
I could see them letting Bennett walk if he's asking for too much. I think we could do better if it comes down to big-time money.
Beatty will get at least 7 million per
oipolloi : 1/2/2013 8:41 pm : link
.
A few of my thoughts:
Vin_Cuccs : 1/2/2013 9:09 pm : link
It is interesting that they thought enough of Torain to give him a multi-year deal whereas Lumpkin was only a 1-year deal.

S. Brown, A. Brown and Cruz should all be re-signed, but at least we know they will all be on the roster next season one way or another. Hopefully they all get new deals.

And finally, obviously there is a ton of talent on that list of UFA's but in my honest view I think only Beatty is a must. Hixon, Bennett, Phillips and Boothe and Blackburn would all be nice to haves but if every single UFA from that list walked, it wouldn't be totally devastating.
How exactly has Barden not had an opportunity?

I agree. Beatty is really the important one. You don't want to mess around at LT. Especially when your QB isn't mobile like Eli. He is far and away the most important resign.

I think Cruz will be back, and I'd be willing to bet the market won't be as hot for him as we might think. Supply and demand. Good WR's are getting very plentiful.

Boothe, IMO, is also important.

Hixon is just a guy. He's a fourth receiver on this team next year, with no upside at this point, and oft-injured.

Bennett played ok but he was not a world beater. Had issues with the dropsies this year and at times did not run good routes. He should've been demonstratively better than Ballard and he was only a little better. That said, I'd like him back, but he will probably test free agency, get his pride hurt because the Giants won't offer what he wants, and sign elsewhere. There are other guys in free agency that can be an adequate replacement this offseason.

Outside of Beatty, there really isn't anything to be majorly concerned about.

And why some are so hellbent on resigning Tynes is funny to me. He's a kicker. And a B to B minus kicker at that.
Bennett is an interesting case.
Big Blue Blogger : 1/3/2013 1:15 am : link
He seems to be a player who needs time to absorb a new system. That suggests he's worth more to the Giants than he is to anyone else (except maybe the Cowboys, but I think that ship has sailed). I'm intrigued by a potential pairing of him and Adrien Robinson. That's a lot of athleticism at the TE position, without any sacrifice of bulk and strength.

Also, while he may have been a moderate bust in Dallas, I like Bennett's durability and experience. Consider this: he and Jake Ballard were born in the same year. Bennett has 76 regular season games under his belt; Ballard has 15. Travis Beckum is just two weeks younger than Bennett, and we all know what his resume looks like.
UFA priorities
BlueLou : 1/3/2013 4:49 am : link
Beatty
Tynes
Bennett
Boothe
Rivers (no depth at all at LB on this team right now)
Tryon (great STs and no depth at CB, either)
Hixon (Randle should pass him on the depth chart in '13)
Carr (vet min at his age, no one else wants him)
Chase (appreciate the effort , but cement feet)

All the EFRAs are signed no brainer... Trattou has a role on the 53 is healthy, so does Tracy.

Among the RFAs we want long term deals by priority:

Cruz
Andre Brown
Steve Brown

I thought Torrain was signed through 2013? If not, who cares?
