Giants who are positively in the 2013 plan (Corrected).

Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 6:36 pm
With all the talk about cuts, I started thinking about the other side of the coin: players under contract who aren't in immediate jeopardy. Here's what I came up with:

Offense (10)
QB: E. Manning
RB/FB: D. Wilson, A. Brown, H. Hynoski
WR: H. Nicks, R. Randle*
TE: A. Robinson
OL: D. Baas, C. Snee, J. Brewer

Defense (8)
DL: L. Joseph, J. Pierre-Paul, M. Kiwanuka (DE?), J. Tuck
LB: J. Williams
DB: A. Rolle, P. Amukamara, J. Hosley

Special Teams (2)
S. Weatherford
Z. DeOssie

That's twenty players. As far as I can tell, that's the core of the team. Some other young players like Hill**, Jernigan, Tracy, Mosley, Austin and Herzlich will have ample opportunity to earn playing time, but they aren't cinches to make the team. And many of the pricey veterans listed above (Tuck, Rolle, Snee, Kiwanuka, Baas) must be feeling the heat from the current purge.

The list of safe Giants is very short - shorter than any year since at least 2007, and probably shorter than you would expect for a team coming off three winning seasons that included a championship.

Did I miss anyone?

* Thanks to gmyers400 for catching my brain-fart on Randle.
** Will Hill is something of a special case. On price-vs.-performance, he's a mortal lock to make the final 53, barring injury. But I suspect the kid is on probation for at least another year.
Another correction came from Greg on LI, I think:

Andre Brown isn't under contract, but I'm pretty sure the Giants hold exclusive rights because he doesn't have three credited seasons. Stevie Brown is an RFA, so he's roughly in the same boat as Victor Cruz.
Nice

job.

This is going to be a very interesting offseason.
The Snee retiring rumor is floating around
Optimus-NY : 2/6/2013 6:40 pm : link
Read it some where first, then Fatcesser said it. It might explain why he wanted to go to the Pro Bowl before having surgery.

Andre Brown is restricted.

BBI Free Agent Scorecard (sourced from Giants.com for RFAs/EFAs) - ( New Window )
I don't think Tuck belongs on the safe list.
BlueLou : 2/6/2013 6:44 pm : link
You left off many that will make it on STs and depth value alone - Hill, Herzlich, Paysinger, Tracy...

I'm prolly the only guy wondering if Sintim gets a medical check out and tryout?
I am excited
Reb8thVA : 2/6/2013 6:44 pm : link
To see Reese's plan unfold. You know there is a plan behind those cuts.
As Eric said, going to be very interesting...
drkenneth : 2/6/2013 6:45 pm : link
MOM made the point first, but it's a HUGE off-season for this franchise.
Andre Brown is a Restricted Free Agent (RFA)

.
With Bradshaw cut
BlueLou : 2/6/2013 7:00 pm : link
does Brown now get a 2nd round tender?
BlueLou...
rptl530 : 2/6/2013 7:03 pm : link
no.

Huge offseason..
rptl530 : 2/6/2013 7:04 pm : link
and so far we're handling it perfectly.
rptl
BigBlueBuff : 2/6/2013 7:09 pm : link
The Giants are handling it perfectly. BBI? Not so much.
So what tender does he get?
BlueLou : 2/6/2013 7:10 pm : link
They have to keep him now.
Pascoe
pjcas18 : 2/6/2013 7:12 pm : link
was re-signed, wasn't he?
Da'Rel Scott
Klaatu : 2/6/2013 7:22 pm : link
Signed through 2015.

Stevie Brown?
Jerry K.: Stevie Brown is definitely a restricted FA.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 7:50 pm : link
He has three acrrued seasons of service: 2010-2012. I think he'll be back, but who knows? In any case, he's in the same boat, contractually, as Victor Cruz.

The situation with ANDRE Brown is trickier. The consensus seems to be that he's restricted, but his three accrued seasons are less clear than Stevie's. He was credited with a season of service in 2009, when he was on IR. He also earned a year in 2012. In 2011, he was on the Giants' practice squad, which doesn't count.

So his status hinges on 2010, when he bounced around the League. I guess he accumulated enough weeks to earn a year of service, without being active for enough games to become ineligible for the practice squad in 2011.

Eric from BBI : Admin : 2/6/2013 8:14 pm : link
as I said above, Giants.com said he was restricted.
Eric: Your word is good enough for me.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 8:23 pm : link
No need to cite Giants.com. :o)

I had forgotten the loophole that would allow 2010 to count toward his accrued service without keeping him off the practice squad in 2011. So I assumed that if he was eligible for the PS in 2011, 2010 must not have counted as a year of service.
I think Cruz is 100% in their plans
Essex : 2/6/2013 8:24 pm : link
and Tuck has to be in their plans at his salary.
Essex
Mike in Long Beach : 2/6/2013 8:27 pm : link
most of us do, but technically, till a deal is signed, Cruz is a question mark.

I think the moves made today were partially done to free up room for him.
So Pascoe was re-signed
pjcas18 : 2/6/2013 8:31 pm : link
or will re-sign this week http://www.examiner.com/article/free-agent-tight-end-bear-pascoe-set-to-re-sign-with-new-york-giants

Something is going to happen at TE, even if bennett isn't re-signed (and I think he will be).

I'm prettyy sure Pascoe and Robinson will not be the only TE's.
Mike in LB--The question of this thread is who is positively
Essex : 2/6/2013 8:34 pm : link
in their plans. He is positively in their plans. Under contract or not, there is no way the Giants will let him go. 0 chance.
Essex
pjcas18 : 2/6/2013 8:36 pm : link
the Giants might not have a choice. if they don't extend him, but tender him (1st round), they'd need to match an offer to keep him.

The Giants control the situation for now, but that might not be the case come free agency.
I put him as a much stronger retain than Andre Brown
Essex : 2/6/2013 8:40 pm : link
and everyone on this thread is pretty much under the belief that he is positively part of the plan. If the point of this thread is to list the players the Giants won't cut, than it should have been labeled differently. I thought the point was to determine who are positively part of the plans. Cruz is part of the plans. I cannot see a scenario in which it does not get worked out, especially since I believe the poison pill has been removed by the last Collective Bargaining Agreement.
I was way off on Andre Brown's 2010 season.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 8:41 pm : link
He was actually on "full pay status" for a total of twelve weeks, twice the requirement to accrue a season of service:
Denver - 4
Indianapolis - 1
Carolina - 1
Washington - 6

Brown was only active for four games, and never dressed for Carolina or Washington. That enabled him to retain his practice squad eligibility. Ironically, if the Redskins had given him a helmet the last month of the 2010 season, he would have been ineligible for the practice squad in 2011 and his career might very well have been over when the Giants cut him. (Or maybe they would have kept him on the roster instead of Da'Rel Scott. Who knows?)

Anyway, that's the last time I question the BBI roster.
Lou I'd guess Brown is tendered at the original round level
Torrag : 2/6/2013 8:50 pm : link
...
the point of the thread
pjcas18 : 2/6/2013 8:51 pm : link
I thought was players who are under contract.
I think the only way Cruz isn't a Giant in 2013...
Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 9:02 pm : link
... is if he signs a monster offer sheet. That could happen, though recent RFA history suggests it's unlikely. And if the signing team is in the top half of the first round (Dolphins? Rams? Chargers?) the Giants will have to give serious thought to taking the pick. Even a late pick like New England's might make sense if the contract is really onerous.

With Stevie Brown and Andre Brown, the tricky part is deciding the tender levels. I assume a second-round tender would be a sufficient deterrent on each, if the Giants think they are worth the $2MM salary.

Anyway, the RFAs other than Cruz are a very small part of the picture, and I was wrong to include Andre on the list of locks.
pjcas18: Exactly.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 9:06 pm : link
Take Andre Brown off the list, and you're down to nineteen.

For me, it's fun to watch Reese tear the team apart and rebuild, all in a few months. It took me a while to get used to this stuff after Simms got cut nineteen years ago. Now I enjoy it, though I'll miss Bradshaw.
Who is going to sign Andre Brown?
DavidinBMNY : 2/6/2013 9:20 pm : link
Really we're worried about him?
Essex, you're confusing the words positively and probably
Mike in Long Beach : 2/6/2013 9:33 pm : link
.
David: With Bradshaw gone...
Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 9:46 pm : link
...I think 'Dre could be an important guy. At this point, he's a more accomplished pro than David Wilson. Is he important enough for a second-round tender? Maybe. The extra $700K buys a year of insurance on Wilson.
Funny,
Doomster : 2/6/2013 9:47 pm : link
Canty, Boley and AB were considered overpaid, but Rolle isn't?
Two things to note about Rolle:
Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 10:05 pm : link
1) No 2013 roster bonus that I'm aware of; and
2) He hasn't missed a start since joining the team.

#1 reduces the urgency of his situation, as long as they don't need his money for other deals.

#2 distinguishes him from new ex-Giants like Bradshaw, Canty and Boley, as well as potentially-soon-to-be ex-Giants like Phillips and Beatty.

Jerry Reese doesn't have a lot of patience with guys who can't stay on the field. 'Trel might be overpaid, but at least he answers the bell every Sunday to earn his check.
And if Webster stays...
Big Blue Blogger : 2/6/2013 10:10 pm : link
...his durability will probably be one of the key reasons.
Rolle is overpaid, but he's also damned useful.
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/6/2013 10:13 pm : link
And you're going to lose him if he gets cut. He's still a very good player.
love Rolles versatility and health
spike : 2/6/2013 10:56 pm : link
or we wouldve had Tryon as our slot CB at times this year
I'd agree that Cruz
SMitch2 : 2/7/2013 8:29 am : link
has to be in their plans. A guy that explosive doesn't come around often. He's young and healthy -- doesn't miss games -- and has a great team attitude. He also "gets" our offense -- which is another hurdle for anyone who would attempt to replace him.

I do like the fact that the team seems to be cutting bait with chronic injuries -- their too disruptive. They're always juggling guys in and out, no one gets settled, and you're constantly fielding second-tier guys because their subbing for the injured starter. The games lost is just not compensated by the talent when healthy.

I'd have to think KP is the next on the block. His knee will never get better and always require managing.
Rolle has been the target of many a BBI arrow
idinkido : 2/7/2013 8:30 am : link
but the guy plays with heart and the coaching staff has too often put him into difficult assignments. I believe that guys like Rolle and a Bradshaw (who we will miss) embody what a coach wants in a player, always willing to play hard and put his body on the line.
SMitch2: KP's head can't go on the block.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/7/2013 10:31 am : link
As an unrestricted free agent, he just walks away on his gimpy knees. For the Giants' sake, let's hope he gets a big contract that will produce to a useful compensatory pick in 2014. I don't expect it, but you see some strange moves in the NFL. And a healthy Kenny Phillips is a much better player than Aaron Ross ever was.
I think KP
Dave in MD : 2/7/2013 10:35 am : link
is going to get a very nice contract. He's a very good safety. Our defense was much worse without him. That doesn't have to be true going forward. Will Hill will likely be a very good replacement. But someone will give KP a very good contract. I hope it's not Dallas.
Dave: High risk, high reward.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/7/2013 10:47 am : link
Phillips is only 26, and he is very good when healthy. The question is whether anyone will hand him a lot of guaranteed money with the cloud over his health. I don't think the Giants will, but with 31 other teams as potential employers, you're probably right that somebody will roll the dice.
