LT Will Beatty re-signed with the Giants today on a 5-year, $37.5M deal (up to $38.75 w/incentives), per source. $19M fully guaranteed. #nyg
I think the deal is reasonable, but certainly not a bargain.

I don't see how we can keep Boothe after this, unless his market value is really a pittance. Which is what I expected.
Boothe is a guy who can be replaced, and I'd like to see if the Giants can improve upon him. If Jonathan Cooper is gone by 19 (I'm assuming Chance Warmack will be gone too---probably to Tennessee at 10), then Brian Winters and Justin Pugh would be players who should be available who would make sense in the 3rd round.
RT is a position which obviously must be addressed as well. Dallas Thomas or Terron Armstead in the 2nd round would do the trick there at that position.
I've heard that they love him, based on an early report, but who really knows. This is the time of year where misdirection reigns supreme. Here's an example:
Quote:
According to SI's Tony Pauline, teams are "falling in love" with Alabama OT D.J. Fluker, and "some in (the) scouting community" believe he could go as high as No. 19 to the Giants.
Is this fact or misdirection? Who knows--and I'm glad that I have to guess. When EA was here picks were telegraphed frequently. He was worse than a HS girl who got a date for the prom in February with his mouth. Thank God for Jerry Reese who keeps the flow of information much less frequent and under control.
There are five or six guys that will leap over Beatty his offseason or next. That puts Beatty mid pack. I think is an excellent deal for the Gmen. Not sure why here is so much negativity.
wouldn't count on Cooper, although it's possible he could still be there at #19. Watch Dallas take him right beforehand. Warmack I assume will be long gone. Fluker should be available. I'd be OK with him, but there are questions about his pass blocking. And what does drafting Fluker say about what the Giants think of Brewer, especially now that they have resigned Beatty? Are they planning to play Brewer at guard?
the Giants to improve the O-Line. Coughlin is NOT like EA when it comes to the O-Line. Philsophically, controlling the lines of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, is the first thing he wants to control. He said when he was hired here, and his coaching career everywhere he's been as the Head Man, bears this out.
The Jaguars were always tough and in control in the trenches when he was there. The Giants at their peak on the O-Line in 2008, were in firm control of the game with their fab 5 up front beating teams at the point of attack. Hopefully the Giants can get back to that approach with some personnel changes brought about via the draft going forward from today.
As long as TC lets the rookies breathe somewhat, like Reese intimated he'd like TC to do more of, then this team is in good shape. The veteran coaching here does as good of a job as any other staff in the league when it comes to coaching players up. O-Line coach, Pat Flaherty, is one of the unsung heroes on the staff. He'll continue doing a great job here. The scouts just need to get the horses in here. If they do, he'll coach them up and they'll be ready to go.
Cooper at 18 right before our pick. In fact, that's where Gil Brandt has him going in his latest mock draft, with Fluker surprisingly going to the Bucs before that at pick #13 overall. Check it out here:
With teams like Dallas who desperately need a Guard..but when draft day comes, you see guards slip like clockwork.
Dallas needs serious help at Safety too. Now if you're Dallas, do you see the bigger drop-off in talent with a Guard from round 1 and 2, or with a Safety from round 1 and 2? I think they go with the playmakers at round 1. I do see it as a very realistic possibility that Cooper could get taken before Warmack though.
Cooper is just as good a prospect as Warmack, IMO. Different types of guards, but both are elite. Scheme fit may very well be the determining factor that decides which player comes off the board first.
All I know is I don't want the Cowboys taking Cooper in the 1st and Reid in the 2nd. That's the draft I want for us!
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Dallas' OL is a Man Blocking scheme. While I'm sure Cooper can do that, he's tailor made for a zone blocking scheme..which might make teams like Dallas not wanting to use a 1st round pick on a guy who doesn't excel best in their system.
with Cooper falling to #19 is the fact that he can possibly be converted to the center position. This could make Baas expendable. i am keeping my fingers crossed that he will be available.
Getting almost 8 mil per, for one full season as a starter....hopefully he stays healthy and can perform.....
The following year, if Snee doesn't get his act together, he and Rolle will be the sacrificial lambs, along with Tuck, Webster....Of course there is the possibility that Webster's head rolls with Diehl's this season.....need money for the Browns, Boothe, Bennett, Hixon, etc.
In the 2008 off-season Osi was already squawking about how now it's time to get paid. My idea was to package Osi with our first round pick to move into the top five for Jake Long. At the time, I didn't realize Long would go number one overall.
Understood. Thanks for clarifying, though I don't think a package of the No. 31 pick and a disgruntled Umenyiora -- even the one coming off his '07 season -- would have been anywhere near enough to move into the top five in any draft.
is better suited for a zone blocking scheme? They guy played a man blocking scheme at UNC. The guy can get out and pull like a Beast. He is scheme diverse.
Cooper is scheme diverse. No question about it. But for the record, he played in a ZBS as a senior at UNC.
I said scheme fit may very well be the determining factor that decides which player comes off the board first because Warmack is strictly a man-blocking mauler. A ZBS team will certainly have Cooper on their radar, but not Warmack.
And those saying Cooper is an ideal fit in a ZBS say so because it's a scheme in which athleticism takes precedence over bulk.
WAP pretty much covered all the bases. Cooper can play both, but because of his athleticism he would excel in the ZBS more than MBS. Warmack, however, would be best suited in a MBS.
Not cheap by any means but certainly not bloated either. He should anchor the LT spot for years to come. First and most important piece of the offseason puzzle fits in nicely.
but it just shows how little I know about player salaries. I was shocked to see a $38.75 Mil deal for Beatty. To me I'm thinking that is supper top money reserved only for the best of tackles/guards and frankly, I never thought he was that level of a player. I guess and absolutely hope I am wrong and he is worth every penny because I am always for keeping a high priority on the O-line.
I'm a little nervous about what that is going to do to our cap because I have no idea how much of an increase that is for him. Sure hope he stays healthy.
I posted this earlier in the thread, but you should compare Beatty's contract to others at the position while simultaneously taking into account that several other left tackles (Clady, Long, Albert, Baker) are primed to sign even bigger deals. As was pointed out, there appear to be other OTs coming up for UFA that figure to get paid more than WB, which puts his salary around #15 overall. Reasonable deal for both sides, and as RV said (re-posted from last night) :

I haven't seen Will Beatty's deal yet, but I'm told his 2013 cap number is slightly more than $3.5 million -- very cap friendly.
which means his salary for this year is likely $1m (plus the Â
Actually, I should've probably clarified my stance a bit further. A ZBS team would only have Cooper on their radar, whereas an offense that features a man-blocking scheme would consider drafting either prospect.
Cooper's athleticism and ability to block in space would be on full display in a ZBS, but like Robbie said he's such an outstanding puller and is so effective on the second level that his skill set also fits in an MBS. He plays with physicality and is a powerful presence in the trenches.
He's bulked back up to 312 pounds after dropping to 285 in 2012 to play in North Carolina's up-tempo, no-huddle offense last season. He played in a power scheme up until his senior season at UNC, and he's the type of guard who can fit in any system.

I expect to see similar deals for Nicks and Cruz in terms of guaranteed money. Slightly more for Nicks

Does bashing a player who gave his heart, soul, and body to your Sunday afternoons, an escape from your Monday thru Saturday, give you solace?
Raise your hand if you want to suit up to block Demarcus Ware to win the division.
I hope DD (5th round pick, two super bowl rings) retires a true blue Giant, and only when he and the team agrees its time.
And not when you on your comfy sofa in your man cave decides its time to end his career.

If that's right, the Giants would still be about $2M or so under the projected salary cap after the Beatty deal. They will need more room.
Onward!

I already admitted I was wrr...I was wrrr...I was not exactly right. But don't put words in my mouth that I didn't say.
Fair deal

If I'm a MBS team - Give me Warmack
If I'm a ZBS team - Give me Cooper
