LT Will Beatty re-signed with the Giants today on a 5-year, $37.5M deal (up to $38.75 w/incentives), per source. $19M fully guaranteed. #nyg
Those are the real overpays. Beatty becomes 10th highest paid tackle. That is not bad considering he just signed and salaries have been going up markedly this year.
Rolle is the 4th highest paid safety. Another overpay but one that is easier to justify, given what he brings to the table.
Giants have done well for themselves in the second round over the years - Beatty, Joseph, Snee, Strahan, Toomer, Tiki, Webster and Osi come to mind, and I think they had a number of picks on defense in the second round in '86 (Pepper and Collins, and a linemen or two - Dorsey or Erik Howard ? ). And T2 and Steve Smith were very solid picks who played very well but were derailed by injury.
No way to really know yet since they haven't released the full contract details yet. My guess would be a 2013 fully guaranteed base salary in the $2-3M range which would give him a 2013 cap hit of $4.5-5.5M.
Dude earned his money with good play and staying healthy.
(hypothetically), but his base would need to be pretty ridiculous to make it worth absorbing $5M in dead money. I see the contract more like this:
Code:
2013: Base $3M____SB $2.5M______________________Cap Hit $5.5M
2014: Base $3.5M__SB $2.5M__Roster Bonus $250k__Cap Hit $6.25M
2015: Base $4M____SB $2.5M__Roster Bonus $250k__Cap Hit $6.75M
2016: Base $6M____SB $2.5M__Roster Bonus $250k__Cap Hit $8.75M
2017: Base $8.5M__SB $2.5M__Roster Bonus $250k__Cap Hit $11.25M
Total: $38.5M ($19M guaranteed*, $12.5M SB)

That is a little worrisome to me.
WB gets money that pays him bottom top 10, and NYG can structure the cap hits to be lower in the first three years, I gather.

I believe we were about 5 mill under now we are back to being 2 over?
Now draft a starting ORT, and sign Cruz at an equally reasonable number for a slot and we have a good start.
the good news is, they can now give Diehl the take it or leave it pay cut without sweating it if he chooses to leave.
that should be enough cap space to get Cruz done for now.
Now to see what happens to Diehl. Someone make sure Milton is OK?
jlukes - I'm not so sure it's a "3 year deal" though. That would mean at least $5M dead money in year 4 based off the reported signing bonus.
