For those wanting to compare Beatty's contract to other left tackles...
Over the Cap - NFL Left Tackle Contracts and Salaries - ( New Window )
that's a very reasonable deal
oipolloi : 2/27/2013 3:19 pm : link
Giants gave a little extra in guaranteed money to get the annual salary down. I think that is a good gamble.
Nice to hear some good news.
bceagle05 : 2/27/2013 3:20 pm : link
I wanted no part of overpaying Jake Long or something.
Don't forget there are other FA OTs
Racer : 2/27/2013 3:20 pm : link
out there, fellas. By committing early, JR may have saved himself from Beatty's people benchmarking against a higher number. We'll see.
I can't believe Jason Peters is getting almost 13 mil per year
Curtis in VA : 2/27/2013 3:22 pm : link
Good grief.
They're
Jon in NYC : 2/27/2013 3:22 pm : link
top 10 OT money to a guy who has a spotty injury history.

That is a little worrisome to me.
Jon
gmen9892 : 2/27/2013 3:24 pm : link
Last year was basically Beatty's first full year starting at LT. Theoretically, he should only get better and hes already a borderline Top 10 LT.
Clady
JonC : 2/27/2013 3:24 pm : link
Wait until Clady signs his new monster deal.

WB gets money that pays him bottom top 10, and NYG can structure the cap hits to be lower in the first three years, I gather.
I
sin : 2/27/2013 3:26 pm : link
think this is a great contract for the Giants. IF healthy Beatty is Beast!

Jon in NYC : 2/27/2013 3:26 pm : link
I know. My issue is not the play. It's him being able to play.
Will Beatty, I would argue, was one of the 5 best offensive players on
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/27/2013 3:27 pm : link
the team last year.
Ten Ton, he was definitely one of our top 5 best players on offense
David in LA : 2/27/2013 3:28 pm : link
.
If healthy he can outperform this contract a bit.
the_fridge : 2/27/2013 3:28 pm : link
if not, he will underperform it. So, it seems pretty fair to me.
Baas is 6th highest paid center
oipolloi : 2/27/2013 3:29 pm : link
Snee 6th highest paid guard

Those are the real overpays. Beatty becomes 10th highest paid tackle. That is not bad considering he just signed and salaries have been going up markedly this year.

Rolle is the 4th highest paid safety. Another overpay but one that is easier to justify, given what he brings to the table.
Sounds like a very fair deal
4thand17 : 2/27/2013 3:30 pm : link
Giants have done well for themselves in the second round over the years - Beatty, Joseph, Snee, Strahan, Toomer, Tiki, Webster and Osi come to mind, and I think they had a number of picks on defense in the second round in '86 (Pepper and Collins, and a linemen or two - Dorsey or Erik Howard ? ). And T2 and Steve Smith were very solid picks who played very well but were derailed by injury.
Looks like a win-win

what is
Mr. Nickels : 2/27/2013 3:39 pm : link
our cap number now?

I believe we were about 5 mill under now we are back to being 2 over?
great signing!
andrew_nyg : 2/27/2013 3:40 pm : link
No way that is an overpay. Very reasonable number for a starting OLT.

Now draft a starting ORT, and sign Cruz at an equally reasonable number for a slot and we have a good start.
!!!
Neverend : 2/27/2013 3:40 pm : link
I suspect his cap hit this year
JonC : 2/27/2013 3:41 pm : link
would be approx $5M, given that's approx how much cap space we figured to have after re-doing Kiwanuka.
I think the deal is reasonable, but certainly not a bargain.
BlueLou : 2/27/2013 3:45 pm : link
I don't see how we can keep Boothe after this, unless his market value is really a pittance. Which is what I expected.
Andrew, my suspicions are that we sign a cheap vet to compete
David in LA : 2/27/2013 3:46 pm : link
with and push Brewer. I think this season is one where we will rely on a few of our previous draft picks to step up and replenish the roster.
You were not going to solve the LT spot at a bargain
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/27/2013 3:47 pm : link
Not overpaying and keeping the player you want is a victory.
Mr. Nickels
GIANTSr01 : 2/27/2013 3:47 pm : link
No way to really know yet since they haven't released the full contract details yet. My guess would be a 2013 fully guaranteed base salary in the $2-3M range which would give him a 2013 cap hit of $4.5-5.5M.
Dude earned his money with good play and staying healthy.
Shockeyisthebest80 : 2/27/2013 3:47 pm : link
Congrats and good luck for the rest of his years in Big Blue.
considering a starting OLT
andrew_nyg : 2/27/2013 3:48 pm : link
a bargain is stretching it, the way the league is going nowadays.

the good news is, they can now give Diehl the take it or leave it pay cut without sweating it if he chooses to leave.

that should be enough cap space to get Cruz done for now.
My guess is that after all of the numbers come out the contract
jlukes : 2/27/2013 3:50 pm : link
Will essentially be a 3 year deal. First two years salary will be guaranteed (probably 3 million this year and 4 next year.)
David if the young guys can be depended upon to that degree
andrew_nyg : 2/27/2013 3:50 pm : link
that is VERY GOOD news for Reese and the Giants RE the cap.
Giantsr01-we are on the same page
jlukes : 2/27/2013 3:51 pm : link
.
Clady
Toth029 : 2/27/2013 3:52 pm : link
Will be much higher which drops him out of the top ten category. Jake Long will be overpaid, too.
It looks reasonable now, which means in 2 years
jcn56 : 2/27/2013 3:52 pm : link
it'll look cheap. Sounds like a good job to me.

Now to see what happens to Diehl. Someone make sure Milton is OK?
Andrew, it's really the best case scenario for us
David in LA : 2/27/2013 3:53 pm : link
Hopefully Brewer is another one of Reese's gems.
Good deal, 2 million less than the franchise number.
old timer : 2/27/2013 3:54 pm : link
I think we got a bit of hometown discount.
Sam Baker will get more than beatty as well
jlukes : 2/27/2013 3:54 pm : link
.
I know it's a longshot BUT
andrew_nyg : 2/27/2013 3:55 pm : link
of the remaining FA's I am really hoping that Cruz AND Phillips get re-signed.
Wow. Good job, JR.
Klaatu : 2/27/2013 3:55 pm : link
Now, go sign Larry Grant.
Nice contract for Beatty
Spark Em Up 22 : 2/27/2013 3:57 pm : link
personally. Giants didn't overpay but didn't get a steal either.
Jcn,
Big Blue '56 : 2/27/2013 4:00 pm : link
Milton's ok..He said that this signing does not mean Beatty will start over Diehl
with Long, Albert, Clady, Loadholt, etc
GIANTSr01 : 2/27/2013 4:01 pm : link
Beatty good very well be outside the top 10 in average salary for tackles.

jlukes - I'm not so sure it's a "3 year deal" though. That would mean at least $5M dead money in year 4 based off the reported signing bonus.
This signing cements Beatty as the LT
JonC : 2/27/2013 4:02 pm : link
only injury would change that, similarly to recent history.
Eh, hopefully he can stay healthy.
Dave in Hoboken : 2/27/2013 4:08 pm : link
The cap number gets smaller with Cruz still unsigned.
His salary could shoot up in years 4 to the point where we'd save
jlukes : 2/27/2013 4:10 pm : link
Money against the cap by releasing him. That's of course only if he has injury /performance issues.
ok now get rid of

a restructure
Dave in MD : 2/27/2013 4:16 pm : link
in year 4 is more likely. He's still a young guy. Shouldn't be done at that point.
My final guess at structure
jlukes : 2/27/2013 4:17 pm : link
12.5 million signing bonus

Salaries
2013 $2.5 million fully guaranteed
2014 $4 million fully guaranteed
2015 $5 million
2014 $6.5 million
2015 $8.5 million
Should obviously read
jlukes : 2/27/2013 4:19 pm : link
12.5 million signing bonus

Salaries
2013 $2.5 million fully guaranteed
2014 $4 million fully guaranteed
2015 $5 million
2016 $6.5 million
2017 $8.5 million
Sure they can save money by cutting him in year 4
GIANTSr01 : 2/27/2013 4:19 pm : link
(hypothetically), but his base would need to be pretty ridiculous to make it worth absorbing $5M in dead money. I see the contract more like this:
Code:

2013: Base $3M____SB $2.5M______________________Cap Hit $5.5M
2014: Base $3.5M__SB $2.5M__Roster Bonus $250k__Cap Hit $6.25M
2015: Base $4M____SB $2.5M__Roster Bonus $250k__Cap Hit $6.75M
2016: Base $6M____SB $2.5M__Roster Bonus $250k__Cap Hit $8.75M
2017: Base $8.5M__SB $2.5M__Roster Bonus $250k__Cap Hit $11.25M
Total: $38.5M ($19M guaranteed*, $12.5M SB)

*2013/2014 base amounts guaranteed

happy
agree with Dave
GIANTSr01 : 2/27/2013 4:21 pm : link
that a re-structure would be likely year 4, provided he remains healthy
