LT Will Beatty re-signed with the Giants today on a 5-year, $37.5M deal (up to $38.75 w/incentives), per source. $19M fully guaranteed. #nyg
Beatty was far and away our best OL last season, we got him back at a reasonable deal. What's not to like? Kirwan is good, but he's certainly not gospel, nor is his opinion infallible.
In other news, Dave Diehl now orders a less expensive wine with dinner Â
Player and this contract will be small compared to the deals Baker and the other LTs get. He said he understood why the Giants locked Beatty up before he hit the market.
when he invested a 2nd round pick on Beatty in 2009? He was a project coming in and delivered when he played. We made sure our investment in developing him wasn't wasted..
best part about this deal is it's very reasonable Â
he is a solid LT and quite frankly keeps some stability on teh left side. Now Reese has to address LG, RT and Oline depth. Much work still to do with limited resources. It will be interesting to see how he handles the cap now. Will Diehl now get cut, webster perhaps?
All too often teams draft a player, coddle him, teach him and finally get him in some games. The the rookie contract is up and the bastid is lost to free agency. It would have sucked donkey nuts if a solid LT like Beatty could not be re-signed.
Who the f you want us top get for less money? Out do you want us to let DD stay and play Lt? Fine them you pay Eli's medical bills when he gets killed.
that's a very fair contract for a starting LT. You guys won't be complaining about that contract a year or 2 from now when Beatty is named to the Pro Bowl.
One less major hole to fill.Changes little in the draft, we still draft ol/dl; may change FA signings off other teams to serviceable players/backup players instead of starters.Likely a Thank You DD thread will happen soon. Cruz is next signing, unless he is playing hardball; then we get somebodys 1st; and in this strong OL/DL draft, we could get younger for '14 very quickly at 19, X, and 49.
don't think Cruz is going to be signed before FA. Sounds like they are too far apart. The Giants will simply tender him at the first round level, and see what somebody else offers, if anything. Even if they do, the Giants can still match.
the Giants want to re-sign Boothe too. He's a very capable LG, and had a far better year than Snee, who should take a cut, since I've read that he's costing us $11M against the cap between salary and bonus this year.
Why don't you suggest who you wanted to Giants to sign to play LT? That is not a big contract for a LT and it is almost the same contract the Giants gave RT Kareem McKenzie back in 2005.
I don't think you are totally wrong. Diehl just had some sort of surgery, right? If he's healthy, I'm almost sure the Giants will work out something with him where he receives veteran minimum + bonuses if he wants to come back.
That would be a nice insurance policy if Dave can get 100% healthy. You never know what will happen as far as injuries go.
Maybe the reason the Giants haven't cut Diehl yet Â
General manager Jerry Reese called Beatty "one of the ascending left tackles in the NFL.”
“I want to get back on the field and keep ascending, keep rising," Beatty said. "The sky’s the limit for me. I know there is still a lot more out there. I haven’t tapped into all of my potential yet."
Given the size of the contract, I'd rather hear that he is one the best left tackles in the NFL than he is one of the ascending left tackles. It's a lot of money to pay a guy for his potential.
Also, the so-called guaranteed money is probably due to a split bonus, $12.5M in 2013 with a $5M roster bonus due in March 2014 and near-minimum veteran salaries both years. This would put the cap hits in 2013 and 2014 at roughly $3.25M and $4.5M respectively.
What does re-signing Beatty have to do with the line "getting older" ? Beatty will be 28 years old throughout next season. He's not old at all. This is a signing where we are likely to get his prime years and we didn't break the bank, either.
I'd love to hear what your contingency plan would have been in the event that we just let Beatty walk because I can tell you right now, a viable replacement is NOT currently on the roster. This is the franchise QB's blindside we're talking about.
But let's lock up Boothe as well, if possible..An OL doesn't have to have great players. Just players who are on the same page with one another while bringing continuity
and I think he is a good guard but I don't want to spend much to retain him. A 3 year 5.5 million deal is ok but i don't want to see him making much more than that.
It will likely boil down to the Giants being committed to a 3 year, $24M deal. So age is not an issue. He will be in his prime years throughout the "guaranteed" portion of the deal.
Wow! Glad they got it done.
Lesson: Sometimes no news can be good news.
Can the Giants afford him?
Then, draft a guard, round one.
Giants would be looking good.............
Is it too early to start the David Diehl Appreciation Thread?

I really appreciate what DD has brought to the team, but he seems just about done, even as a RT.

X - "Diehl will start the season at LT"
X - "Diehl won two superbowls, therefore he's good"
X - "Beatty is soft"
X - "Beatty is a goner"
X - "McCants should start for us this season"
Yes, Milton. You're right in the way that Stan in LA is always right.
