I think that this is a very fair deal for both sides.
yatqb : 2/27/2013 4:21 pm : link
I ecstatic that he's signed. One less major hole to be concerned with.
And that's exactly what I think will happen, his base salaries would
jlukes : 2/27/2013 4:23 pm : link
Jump big time. It would also align with the projected jump in salary cap in 2015.
Horrible contract. Reese has o my himself
LauderdaleMatty : 2/27/2013 4:23 pm : link
To blame. Let the line get older and had not enough good replaceable depth. Most overrated guy on BBI.
BTW on Sirius Pat Kirwan
LauderdaleMatty : 2/27/2013 4:25 pm : link
Said thin legged guy who gets bull rushed a lot. PK very respected an one I the better analysts out there. Not a big fan of this contract at all.
Ok, so we have one critic
David in LA : 2/27/2013 4:27 pm : link
Beatty was far and away our best OL last season, we got him back at a reasonable deal. What's not to like? Kirwan is good, but he's certainly not gospel, nor is his opinion infallible.
In other news, Dave Diehl now orders a less expensive wine with dinner
Marty in Albany : 2/27/2013 4:27 pm : link
.
What does signing a young left tackle
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/27/2013 4:27 pm : link
have to do with "allowing the line to get older and not have enough depth"?
Matty, you're leaving out the fact that Kirwan said beatty was a good
jlukes : 2/27/2013 4:27 pm : link
Player and this contract will be small compared to the deals Baker and the other LTs get. He said he understood why the Giants locked Beatty up before he hit the market.

What was our other option(s)????
drkenneth : 2/27/2013 4:29 pm : link
Please do tell me...I like the deal, he will get better.
How did Reese let the line get younger
David in LA : 2/27/2013 4:32 pm : link
when he invested a 2nd round pick on Beatty in 2009? He was a project coming in and delivered when he played. We made sure our investment in developing him wasn't wasted..
best part about this deal is it's very reasonable
GMenLTS : 2/27/2013 4:33 pm : link
and we likely have not seen Beatty's best assuming he stays healthy and continues to improve
Good news......
Simms11 : 2/27/2013 4:34 pm : link
he is a solid LT and quite frankly keeps some stability on teh left side. Now Reese has to address LG, RT and Oline depth. Much work still to do with limited resources. It will be interesting to see how he handles the cap now. Will Diehl now get cut, webster perhaps?
as it stands
Mr. Nickels : 2/27/2013 4:37 pm : link
who is our left guard??
Beatty got a very nice raise!!
Rflairr : 2/27/2013 4:45 pm : link
Very Nice
Great News!
mrvax : 2/27/2013 4:45 pm : link
This signing is the most important for the 2013 off season.
Wow! Glad they got it done.

Lesson: Sometimes no news can be good news.
Now.....
BillKo : 2/27/2013 4:47 pm : link
anyone see us going after that kind in Cincy...the RT?

Can the Giants afford him?

Then, draft a guard, round one.

Giants would be looking good.............
Dave in LA makes a good point
mrvax : 2/27/2013 4:58 pm : link
All too often teams draft a player, coddle him, teach him and finally get him in some games. The the rookie contract is up and the bastid is lost to free agency. It would have sucked donkey nuts if a solid LT like Beatty could not be re-signed.
OK that probably riles out an ot at 19
gmyers400 : 2/27/2013 4:58 pm : link
I doubt we spend our first on a rt. BTW ecstatic at the news now get cruz and nicks done
Same situation as Petitgout.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/27/2013 4:59 pm : link
If Beatty stays healthy, it's a quality signing of an above-average LOT at a fair price. If not, the guaranteed money will suck.

Is it too early to start the David Diehl Appreciation Thread?
oh and to the critic
gmyers400 : 2/27/2013 5:01 pm : link
Who the f you want us top get for less money? Out do you want us to let DD stay and play Lt? Fine them you pay Eli's medical bills when he gets killed.
Nice job JR
HomerJones45 : 2/27/2013 5:04 pm : link
that's a very fair contract for a starting LT. You guys won't be complaining about that contract a year or 2 from now when Beatty is named to the Pro Bowl.
Good move
old man : 2/27/2013 5:04 pm : link
One less major hole to fill.Changes little in the draft, we still draft ol/dl; may change FA signings off other teams to serviceable players/backup players instead of starters.Likely a Thank You DD thread will happen soon. Cruz is next signing, unless he is playing hardball; then we get somebodys 1st; and in this strong OL/DL draft, we could get younger for '14 very quickly at 19, X, and 49.
Does this mean...
Milton : 2/27/2013 5:06 pm : link
I
AcidTest : 2/27/2013 5:07 pm : link
don't think Cruz is going to be signed before FA. Sounds like they are too far apart. The Giants will simply tender him at the first round level, and see what somebody else offers, if anything. Even if they do, the Giants can still match.
Can we tender Cruz
bradshaw44 : 2/27/2013 5:13 pm : link
to a 1st and 3rd? Or does it have to be just one draft pick?
This
Kwazdukes : 2/27/2013 5:16 pm : link
Was huge........knew it was only a matter of time before it got done.
It was also a pleasant surprise for me to see in the Post that
yatqb : 2/27/2013 5:21 pm : link
the Giants want to re-sign Boothe too. He's a very capable LG, and had a far better year than Snee, who should take a cut, since I've read that he's costing us $11M against the cap between salary and bonus this year.
Lauderdale Matty
Jay on the Island : 2/27/2013 5:24 pm : link
Why don't you suggest who you wanted to Giants to sign to play LT? That is not a big contract for a LT and it is almost the same contract the Giants gave RT Kareem McKenzie back in 2005.
Milton-
mrvax : 2/27/2013 5:24 pm : link
I don't think you are totally wrong. Diehl just had some sort of surgery, right? If he's healthy, I'm almost sure the Giants will work out something with him where he receives veteran minimum + bonuses if he wants to come back.

That would be a nice insurance policy if Dave can get 100% healthy. You never know what will happen as far as injuries go.
Maybe the reason the Giants haven't cut Diehl yet
Jay on the Island : 2/27/2013 5:26 pm : link
is because of the surgery and they have to work out an injury settlement.
Now after this signing at this price,
MOOPS : 2/27/2013 5:27 pm : link
does anybody think Cruz isn't worth at least $8 Million a year?
I'm hoping that Brewer, Mosley and some high draft choice
yatqb : 2/27/2013 5:33 pm : link
pushes DD off the roster, or at least to a vet minimum contract.

I really appreciate what DD has brought to the team, but he seems just about done, even as a RT.
A couple of thoughts...
Milton : 2/27/2013 5:34 pm : link
Quote:
General manager Jerry Reese called Beatty "one of the ascending left tackles in the NFL.”

“I want to get back on the field and keep ascending, keep rising," Beatty said. "The sky’s the limit for me. I know there is still a lot more out there. I haven’t tapped into all of my potential yet."

Given the size of the contract, I'd rather hear that he is one the best left tackles in the NFL than he is one of the ascending left tackles. It's a lot of money to pay a guy for his potential.

Also, the so-called guaranteed money is probably due to a split bonus, $12.5M in 2013 with a $5M roster bonus due in March 2014 and near-minimum veteran salaries both years. This would put the cap hits in 2013 and 2014 at roughly $3.25M and $4.5M respectively.
Matty...
arcarsenal : 2/27/2013 5:42 pm : link
What does re-signing Beatty have to do with the line "getting older" ? Beatty will be 28 years old throughout next season. He's not old at all. This is a signing where we are likely to get his prime years and we didn't break the bank, either.

I'd love to hear what your contingency plan would have been in the event that we just let Beatty walk because I can tell you right now, a viable replacement is NOT currently on the roster. This is the franchise QB's blindside we're talking about.
Now we need a guard to
Beer Man : 2/27/2013 5:50 pm : link
play next to him.
arc
Jay on the Island : 2/27/2013 5:50 pm : link
He is probably going to suggest what that other idiot said where the Giants should start Mosley, McCants, or Capers at LT.
I still want
Mr. Nickels : 2/27/2013 5:51 pm : link
Diehl back
Cruz is of course, ongoing.
Big Blue '56 : 2/27/2013 5:52 pm : link
But let's lock up Boothe as well, if possible..An OL doesn't have to have great players. Just players who are on the same page with one another while bringing continuity
maybe
Mr. Nickels : 2/27/2013 5:53 pm : link
our plan is the 2011 line with Diehl back to LG?
I like Boothe
Jay on the Island : 2/27/2013 5:54 pm : link
and I think he is a good guard but I don't want to spend much to retain him. A 3 year 5.5 million deal is ok but i don't want to see him making much more than that.
Mr. Nickels
Jay on the Island : 2/27/2013 5:57 pm : link
I hope you are joking because Diehl has always been a better tackle than guard and last season he was an awful tackle.
Jay,
Big Blue '56 : 2/27/2013 5:58 pm : link
I don't think they will, nor will anyone else..I think 3 for $7 mill is reasonable also
Boothe's versatility is important.
arcarsenal : 2/27/2013 5:59 pm : link
I would like to have him back as well. I can't see him being expensive.
Once the details come out...
Milton : 2/27/2013 6:04 pm : link
It will likely boil down to the Giants being committed to a 3 year, $24M deal. So age is not an issue. He will be in his prime years throughout the "guaranteed" portion of the deal.
Let me get out my trust Milton checklist...
Modus Operandi : 2/27/2013 6:15 pm : link
X - "Diehl is the superior LT"

X - "Diehl will start the season at LT"

X - "Diehl won two superbowls, therefore he's good"

X - "Beatty is soft"

X - "Beatty is a goner"

X - "McCants should start for us this season"

Yes, Milton. You're right in the way that Stan in LA is always right.

That would be a horrible plan. Diehl ranked last in the NFL in 2011 at guard in pass blocking efficiency.
Great deal

Don't exaggerate. I didn't say two-thirds of those things you claim. Do me a favor and go find quotes to back up what you claim I said.
