PK and TRock asked him who starts at left guard, his first response was "we can do some things in the draft", and then made a general comment like they can "play with some veterans on the roster".
Murphy: Jeremiah Davis (Exec. Scout) calls him a 'knife'. Really will take the top off defenses now, and be a big help to Nicks and (hopefully) Cruz.
Adrien Robinson: Expects him to use his 280lb frame as "the big TE". Didn't mention anything about getting downfield, but commented about some amazing things he flashed in practice last year. 280??
Myers: "QB Friendly", "Quiet 80 catches/going to be a big help in the pass game", "He's played a lot"...he said the latter to underscore the fact they haven't usually given Pope guys with a lot of experience to work with.
Beatty: Good young player on the rise and wanted to get that done before free agency started.
Wouldn't comment on Cruz contract situation because it was 'inappropriate', but praised VC as a person/player. Funny, they re-played his comments on the 2min update... zero-info on Victor beat out Jake Long signing with STL.
And great insight to Murphy and Myers.....good stuff.
Good stuff on Murphy.
I'll be the first to say I hope he was not referring to Deihl as a possibility to start at LG. Others who watched him more closely or know more can weigh in, but from what I saw he was awful at Guard and rarely if ever lays a hand on anyone when pulling.
2 completely different kinds of players. I see Myers as a Pete Mitchell or Chris Cooley type of player.
Suprised PK didn't ask about lowering Tuck's reps because he's mentioned it a few times lately.
Didn't realize Robinson was up around 280 now.
As far as Murphy is concerned, he may be a "knife" in terms of speed, but sometimes he catches like Edward Scissorhands.
Oh well, as I said, this level of FA is like the last few rounds of the draft. Everybody has warts. Just hope you get a player who can do one or two things well, whatever their other shortcomings. I think we did with these FAs. And most on one year contracts, so no real cap problems if they don't work out.
Good job Jerry.
I do think he has the potential of being a good 2 way TE. It seems the vision based on this is a blocking TE. Again, if that's the goal, then he is at a good weight.
I remember reading that even though he was primarily a blocker at Cincinnati, the Bearcats ran a spread offense so he really had no experience engaging 270-280 pound ends.
In describing Robinson as their blocking TE it also informed you that they weren't looking for Myers to fill that role(which was already predicted based on Myer's frame/skillset).
