My Draft Comparisons (2010-2012)

Sy'56 : 4/24/2013 11:57 am
Guys-

The opportunity all have been waiting for!! You get to knock me for some of my past work scouting!!

In all seriousness...the evaluation of who grades well throughout the scouting process is years after the actual draft weekend. As you know, I watch a lot of tape and project future performance based on my own system. I have a lot of grades that are different than what you see out there, but I have always been that way. Some hits, some misses.

With that in mind, I like to make selections for the Giants in real time when they are actually on the clock every round, every year. Please note, I do not make these picks after the draft is completed. They are made the second that the Giants go on the clock based on my own scouting takes and needs for the team. I'll leave out a full analysis on each pick...I'm sure we can have some discussion afterward.

So you're saying that you would've still picked Jimmy Williams instead of Amukamara two years ago? You had him (Williams) ranked higher than Prince on your board?
Initial reactions

2010 - I see it as a draw. Pierre-Paul and Bryant are both on the brink of All-Pro status...but Bryant may have taken something away from locker room chemistry. Lee would be a star in this scheme but I really like Joseph as well. Rest are backup quality for both sides, although Griffen is evolving in to a very good player.

2011 - The one draft class I will hang my hat on. Foster is one of the game's top young LBs. Williams is better than Prince at this point. Cannon is a better version of Boothe. Carter is still one of my favorite unknown backs in the league.

2012 - Reese does a better job at the top, I think my class offers more depth. Wilson might be a superstar...nobody on my list will be one.

They were right there with each other. Very happy with what the Giants got there, you really could have gone with either. Although I like Williams more right now.

Prince...

and Randle seemed like pretty obvious ones to me at the time the Giants were on the clock.

Couldn't believe either of those guys were available.

why would anybody be waiting for the opportunity to knock one of the best posters on this site?
I would have...

been thrilled to get Foster.

I see. But in your OP you said you make these picks in real time...so I was just asking if you would've picked Williams with Amukamara still on the board. Like you said, they both appear to be players so RIGHT NOW it looks like you couldn't go wrong with either one. But I'm just trying to imagine the backlash if, as Giants GM, you would've picked Williams with Amukamara still on the board when Amukamara was considered a top 10 pick while Williams, if I remember correctly, was seen as nothing more than a mid to late 1st round pick (I think he went late to the Ravens right?).

I think I've already said it but I'll say it again, thank you VERY MUCH for your contributions to this site every year around this time. I'm asking you all of these questions because I really respect the amount of time and work you put into it every year.
I clearly missed big on a few

But I appreciate the opportunity that Eric gives me to do some writing/sharing here.

With that said, I do not consider myself any better or worse than anyone with draft opinions. I spend an obscene amount of time and effort watching and re-watching tape from August-April. I think it is important to share that I am wrong on a lot of players...and have no issues taking criticism and admitting where I went wrong.
Weren't the biggest knocks...

on Williams due to off-the-field stuff.

I think he was much like Bryant in that regard although he seems to have ben no trouble thus far in his career.

I disagree with a lot of your assessments but I absolutely respect that you are willing to take criticism and explain your opinions. You don't crow when you are right and you don't mope when you are wrong. That's all anyone can really do at this time of year.

Yeah...I think you're right. But I don't remember anyone saying that if not for the off the field issues that Williams would've been ranked right there with Amukamara until now. Just found that interesting and it actually works as a feather in Sy'56's cap that he ranked them so closely and so far he seems to be right based on their respective play so far.

You're one of the best posters on this board. Thanks for sharing all the hard work you put in. Right or wrong, your opinions are always worth reading.
It doesn't matter if your assessments are

Right or Wrong, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" Your entitled to your opinion. Remember all players don't fit all schemes. So sucess is based on the team that selects them and how they are used.

Beside that; there isn't a poster here that doesn't enjoy and look forward to reading your evaluations.

Keep up the great work!!

Based on your current board are you going to provide us with a first round mock draft tomorrow morning??
Rick
Sy'56 : 4/24/2013 2:02 pm : link
I'm not huge on mock drafts, but I can put something together.

What I think will happen does not exactly line up with what I think should happen.
isn't Jimmy Williams
ABallday : 4/24/2013 2:39 pm : link
Actually Jimmy Smith on the Ravens? or am I confusing the two
Yes
Sy'56 : 4/24/2013 3:36 pm : link
Jimmy Smith...not Williams.
