In a couple of weeks, the third and final phase of the offseason program, the OTAs, begin. and if Cruz isn't signed by then, then this has the potential to drag into training camp and become a distraction.
Maybe I have poor memory but I don't recall the Giants negotiating through the media to the extent they've been doing with Cruz.
I'm not sure what the Giants hope to accomplish with the 7-10 days comment. That sort of thing might work on Cruz's old agent but not on Condon, IMO.
this, or are in the process of doing so. Tom Condon is the agent for both now. Giants don't have enough room under the cap now. They're officially and currently $3,927,958 under the cap. Cruz will cost more than that left over amount of cap space to keep on the roster after an extension. That amount doesn't even include the $1,172,981 in cap space that will be subtracted from amount to sign the Giants' rookies who fit into the top 51 (just Pugh and Hankins).
Isn't Cruz's tender amount accounted for under the current cap number Â
going to have to make more room under the cap. If Cruz signs an extension, they're going to have to make even more. That's why I've been saying cut Snee for a while, and sign a cheaper Brandon Moore to play in his place at RG. That would accomplish two things:
1.) It would create more room under the cap while maintaining a good level of play at RG.
2.) Signing Moore would five the Giants a healthier player: Moore has started 137 straight games---that's 8 and a half YEARS.
I agree about Snee. There's no reason to expect the old Snee to be back and even if he was, he isn't worth the 11 million in cap space. I'd go with a solid FA veteran.
As far as Rolle goes, I think the Giants have to be in position to cut Rolle if he refuses a pay cut. Right now, I don't think that's a good idea.
Oh yeah. Snee agreed to a restructure last season on September 4th (click HERE for the article), so they'll ave to wait until then--allowing 12 months to pass--before they restructure him, if that's their intention.
Them cutting him is something I've been advocating for quite some time now, even though I doubt it happens. Other candidates for restructures off the top of my head include Tuck and Weatherford.
Tuck could get the voidable year treatment that Osi and Webster got. Diehl agreed to a straight up pay cut in his final year. I don't think what happened to DD will happen to Tuck at this juncture. It'll bare watching for sure.
mrvax - Most def. The Giants need Rolle now more than ever Â
With KP gone and the defensive captaincy in flux, he's probably more important than he ever has been. Snee on the other hand is not someone I'm comfortable with. Sign Brandon Moore and cut Snee (thereby gaining $4,750,000 in cap savings if they cut him), and let's move on already.
Moore will save the team money since he will certainly cost less than the cap savings amount of $4,750,000. Moore is also healthier. Is he better than Snee? No. The problem with Snee is that he's got a hip---to use a Coughlinism---and who knows what else. Snee has even admitted to questioning his desire to play going forward. That's why I'd take the healthier and cheaper Moore at this stage of the game.
Could be. The dead money that the Giants would be responsible for if they cut Snee now is $6,250,000. The cap savings of $4,750,000 would be the same regardless on the surface regardless of when they cut him (if they did), but the dead money hit would be spread out over two years at the rate of $3,125,000 per year in 2013 and 2014 instead of $6,250,000 for just one year (2013) if they cut him on or after June 1st. The dead money hit next year would be $2 million flat, while the cap savings would be $7 million flat.
John Mara doesn’t miss very often. So when he tells the NFL Network that he’s confident a long-term deal will get done with Victor Cruz before training camp, you can take some stock in that.
Ideally, though, it would be better to get this done sooner than later. The offseason conditioning program, a time when quarterbacks and receivers can hone their on-field rapport and get on the same page in a relatively pressure-free environment, started on April 15, and Cruz was nowhere in sight. who thinks that it wouldn't be a big deal if Cruz missed a large part of training camp, assuming he stays in shape. Ideal? no. catastrophic? no. Give the young guys more reps and see what you have. Going into camp without having to redo contracts also allows you to see what you have. If someone steps up to the plate and makes Tuck and/or Snee expendable, goodbye T and/or S. Waiting increases our options for creating cap space.
When two plays into a game this board explodes with comments such as:
Fire TC, fire JR, and of coarse the classic "I'm going to mow the lawn".
For all we know it's a done deal already and the Giants and Cruz have agreed to keep it hush to give the Giants all this extra media coverage. I know, that's a cheap Jets trick, but honestly worrying about this isn't going to change a thing. If Mara is not losing sleep over it why should we?

They could easily work his contract so the 2013 hit is the same as the tender amount was, if so.
If not, I doubt they get the money via Eli extension at this point. I think they'd even annoyingly restructure Snee before they go there, honestly.
