Salary Cap update discussion thread

Official Salary Cap space for all 32 teams as of July 8, 2013

•The Giants are officially $3,308,682 under the cap at this time, ranking them 26th in the league.
•The numbers are always changing; Hell, they changed again this morning after the publication of the article.
•Denver's cap number has decreased by $535,000 (meaning that a transaction of theirs went through this morning to the league office) from $10,697,563 to $10,162,563
•See the LEAGUE'S TOP 51 CAP REPORT for constant updates.

•While browsing, take notice of the Redskins, who are in the worst short term position in the NFC East with respect to their cap space.
•Believe it or not, the cap penalties that they incurred may have saved them from their own stupidity, since they're now forced to focus their efforts on making prudent cost-saving decisions, instead going on their traditional off-season spending sprees (wait until RG3's rookie contract is up though if you want to see them return to their old ways).

•The Cowboys, while in decent short-term position with respect to the cap for 2013, are a house of cards.
•They constantly restructure contracts, and push back Dead Money.
•As far as the long-term is concerned, the Cowboys are going to be in deep trouble since they'll be forced to make a lot of cuts; don;t be surprised if they have a year or two of awful football, as Jason Fitzgerald from overthecap.com pointed out in this podcast covering the salary cap situations for teams from the NFC from June 21st linked at the bottom of this article, while discussing the salary cap status of teams in the NFC, starting with the NFC East.

•The Eagles are in the best position in the division, ranking first both in the short-term as well as the long-term.
•The amount of carryover money that they have is massive, and helps them to have added flexibility with the choices they have
•Traditionally though, they are not big spenders under their owner, but the minimum cash spending rule in effect between 2013 and 2016 will encourage them to avoid not doing what they've done before; even if they don't though, the penalty is not severe.
•This article by Jason Fitzgerald from overthecap.com, dating back to February 17th explains it all rather well: "Minimum Cash Spending: Does It Mean Anything?"

•Take a look at the rest of league too for teams that have extra space ($5 million or so is the cutoff point in the Top 51 phase of salary cap accounting), and feel free to discuss.

Curious as to how solidly GB is sitting for the long term

Here it is BB'56:
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 11:21 am : link
2014: $104,102,662 ($800,000 in Dead Money) http://overthecap.com/nfl-cap-space2.php?Year=2014

Here's the long term situation for the Giants (estimated):
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 11:27 am : link
2014: 49 players under contract; $104,100,847 (close to $0 in Dead Money; this will change as cuts occur during training camp in 2013 though, and are rolled over into 2014)

Will be the year for either cuts or restructures for Rolle and Snee. 14 mill in cap savings with those two if cut. I would prefer to restructure or extend rolle and Snee who knows. Maybe retirement.
Rolle and Snee won't be here next year under their current contracts,
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 12:27 pm : link
if they're even here at all. Chip might very well be right about Snee calling it a career then. Snee's already made noise about it in the recent past. We'll ave to wait and see. A lot will depend on his health. Rolle is almost guaranteed to be released next year. The fact that the Giants didn't do anything about their contracts says a lot about what their future plans are for them. The Giants can gain $14.25 million in cap space if they release them next year. See here:

New York Giants 2013 Salary Cap from overthecap.com - ( New Window )
I think Rolle's future
Dave in MD : 7/8/2013 12:45 pm : link
is dependent on how good Stevie Brown is this year. If they he's good and they want to bring him back, Role is gone. If not, he's restructured.
Dave - they won't restructure Rolle next year
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 12:57 pm : link
There will only be a year left on his deal. An extension for a player his age at his position would be atypical. They'll most likely cut him.
next 2 off season s
Chip : 7/8/2013 12:59 pm : link
will be interesting. JPP Tuck Rolle Nicks finding a more permanent solution at TE. Jerry will be busy
Here's the menu of moves teams can make contractwise:
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 1:02 pm : link
1. Restructure
2. Renegotiate (i.e., pay cut)
3. Extension
4. Release (before June 1st)
5. Release (after June 1st)
The Giants' cap analyst will be busy
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 1:03 pm : link
Is Kevin Abrams still doing that as the Asst. GM?
Optimus
snumber6 : 7/8/2013 1:18 pm : link
In the overthecap analysis, Dead money is generally the prorated bonus times the years left on the contract with slight adjustments for other payments (workout, easily reached incentives. etc) - This has been my off the cuff calculation for dead money ...

Snee and Webster though don't really fit this equation ...

Do you happen to know why ?

Optimus, Re Cruz,
Big Blue '56 : 7/8/2013 1:34 pm : link

your best guess as to whether or not Eli restuctured? Other possibilities?
cruz
Chip : 7/8/2013 1:44 pm : link
I am assuming 6 mill signing bonus now and rest of bonus next year to make up guaranteed money. I would assume his cap hit goes up 1 million for this season and no restructure for Eli.
I could live with that
Big Blue '56 : 7/8/2013 1:58 pm : link
.
Restructuring Eli....
rptl530 : 7/8/2013 2:16 pm : link
should be an absolute last resort.

Like Chip said...
Milton : 7/8/2013 2:22 pm : link
At this point there shouldn't be a need to restructure anyone, but in September when the cap must include all 53 on the roster plus those on IR, they made need to restructure someone. They'll need a cushion, too, for when injuries hit during the season and they bring in players from the outside.
Optimus- What will are cap look like
BigBlueDownTheShore : 7/8/2013 2:25 pm : link
after Victor inks his new deal later today?
BB'56 - I think they'll go to some combination of Weatherford and/or
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 2:40 pm : link
The Bank of Eli if they deem it necessary. It all depends on Cruz's cap number for 2013. We now know that it will be the tender amount he signed for this year, with his extension money factoring in to the cap equation next year. Cruz's cap number for 2013 will remain at $2.879 million. Weatherford could help them in this regard by restructuring and helping them add on up to $738,750. Taking all these factors into consideration, I would guesstimate that they'll need another 1 to 2 million bucks of added cap room. Eli or Rolle could easily help them in that department.
one veteran injury
Chip : 7/8/2013 2:46 pm : link
in preseason. Could fix the cap for this season and not force any restructures and save the restructuring for JPP and Nicks for next season. I am assuming Cruz cap will go up a mil. this year.
BigBlueDowntheshore - the cap will look the same as it does today
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 2:49 pm : link
after news of the Cruz deal, since his cap number for 2013 will remain constant ($2.879 M).
optimus
Chip : 7/8/2013 2:52 pm : link
no signing bonus today? i would think 5 or 6 mill signing bonus.
Optimus
Pete in VA : 7/8/2013 2:56 pm : link
Why the same? I can see that it might be similar. If PFT is right, and the signing bonus is close to $10.0, then the prorated portion would be about $1.7. Assuming this year's salary is reduced to the minimum for a player with his experience,it would be similar, but not likely identical.
Contract details
Pete in VA : 7/8/2013 3:14 pm : link
Not stated directly, but apparently the bonus is $9.5 million. Looks to be about a $2.2 cap hit this year, less than under the RFA contract!
Link - ( New Window )
Wow!
Milton : 7/8/2013 3:28 pm : link
That's very favorable for the Giants and it should answer any questions about whether or not Cruz was being selfish and greedy. Given his production the last two years he was justifiably reluctant to sign a deal which truly only commits the Giants to two years at $15.6. And with the third year at $6.25M, it's a bargain three year deal.

This is a combination of Reese's poker skills and Abrams' actuarial mind. Accorsi would've caved mid-season 2012.
Optimus, there appears two be a few sources
Big Blue '56 : 7/8/2013 4:14 pm : link
who say JPP's contract runs through 2015(NFL.com and ESPN)..You stated recently that he signed a 6 year deal, not 5 and thus his contract runs through 2016..Please clarify..Thanks
I'm shocked that the Jets
mrvax : 7/8/2013 7:10 pm : link
have almost 10M in cap room. I thought they were headed for cap hell. I guess they dumped players and didn't lose much in dead money.
I think the Giants have planned there cap out well............
Dry Lightning : 7/8/2013 7:54 pm : link
Rolle and Snee are gone next year. Both good players in there prime but it is time. Baas and Tuck also gone, same situation. I see no chance of signing Nicks long term, and that is smart. He is injury prone, and it is just too risky. Plus, Rueben Randle has the makings of a champion. Look for him to play A LOT this year. JPP is the question mark for me. That all depends on how he does this year. In my mind the only player we will want to spend big money on is possibly JPP. With the cuts above, we will have money for that and plenty more.
Cincy has to be
Rory : 7/8/2013 9:52 pm : link
close to going on a dynasty run. They have the QB the D and the WR to win with.
Couple of things:
Optimus-NY : 7/8/2013 10:01 pm : link
•Cruz's cap number for 2013 is even less than it was according to Jason Fitzgerald from overthecap.com
•It went down from $2,879,000 to $2,530,000.
•That's a difference $349,000.

•This is a credit to our own Patti Traina, who said that Cruz's cap number could go down. which it did.
•The room that the Giants now have under the cap should increase now, going from $3,308,682 to $3,657,682--a positive.

•If you factor in the signing of Pugh, the cap number should go down about $961,436.
•That would bring down the Giants' cap number to approximately $2,696,246 after the Pugh signing.
•Nassib's signing wouldn't affect the Giants' overall cap number since it wouldn't fit into the their Top 51 cap numbers (the Top 51 accounting rules are in effect now until September 5th).

•I wouldn't be surprised to see a restructure to Weatherford's contract next.
•It could net the Giants up to an additional $738,750.
•This would bring the Giants' cap number up to $3,434,996.

Didn't you say he was under contract until 2015

and a FA in 2016?

In other words,

he's ours for 3 more seasons including this one, yes?
Sorry, I meant to say in my initial JPP post
Big Blue '56 : 7/8/2013 10:23 pm : link
that he became a FA in '16 and thus ours for three more seasons starting in '13
Looking back, I didn't see how Cruz's cap number would go down from

the $2.879 M tender figure. I thought it was a straight extension on top of the 2013 tender.

Props to Kevin Abrams.

season. His rookie deal (6 years) began in 2010 and ends after the 2015 season.

Your question was valid. If he's under contract for 2015, his initial contract was 6 years. It was in fact initially reported as 5 years. So either JPP or the Giants likely have an option. If it's JPP, he'll clearly opt out. This needs clarifying.
This link from nfl.com from July of 2010 says that JPP signed a 5

Re: Cruz

I wonder if they converted some of this year's Tender Money to Bonus Money, and spread it over the years. That's the only way I can think of that would reduce his hit this year, eh ?

Optimus-NY : 7/9/2013 11:00 am : link
That sounds about right. Cruz's tender amount, like those of fellow RFAs Andre Brown and Stevie Brown, was all base salary. Both of their one-year tenders count $2,023,000 towards the cap. Cruz's counted $2,879,000 towards the cap (all in base salary). Here's the estimated breakdown from overthecap.com below:

I'm actually liking the Cap Number in those last couple of years.....it's better than those "Phantom Final Year" salaries that will never be paid !!

It virtually guarantees that VC is here for the full contract and that another extension is possible after that. Whoever wrote that Contract should be congratulated.
