atleast. top 5 by my count and the only reason ben is ahead of him is the regular season W/L record. but I put that on the Steelers perpetually good D and the giants light switch D
I'm not really paying a ton of attention to this but this leaves who ahead of him? Brady, Brees, Peyton, Rodgers obviously. so Ben R.? Matt R.? please God not Flacco.
8 Eli Manning
9 Matt schaub(i believe)
10 Andrew Luck
11 Colin Kaepernick
12 Russell Wilson
13 Robert Griffin III
14 Jay Cutler
15 Tony Romo
16 Matthew Stafford
17 Philip Rivers
18 Cam Newton
19 Andy Dalton
20 Alex Smith
21 Josh Freeman
22 Sam Bradford
23 Carson Palmer

25 Michael Vick
26 Brandon Weeden
27 Christian Ponder

that leaves 7 spots for these qbs

I think some of those LT hits are finally getting to Jaws
I'm guessing RGIII, Russel Wilson, Capernick, and Luck are already ahead of Eli in their QB rankings. They love hype way more than a track record and results
people were seriously arguing that Jay Culter, Kyle Orton, and I believe the immortal Matt Cassel were on the same tier as Eli. Now he is almost universally recognized as a top 10 QB with many having him in or just outside their top five.
As a Giant fan who remembers when the punter was our best offensive weapon, I'm in heaven
Whether it was the rumored arm injury or not, he didn't play that well down the stretch and did some big-time stat padding against a dead Philly team in week 17. Flacco and Ryan had better years, but Ben's debatable.
You could make a case for any of those QB's accept maybe
had the 21st ranked total offense last season. We had a 14 ranked offense, which was not top 10. In fact this was the 1st time we weren't top 10 since 2008 season.
Eli had a good year considering all the injuries to the people surrounding him. As a QB you can only do so much.
Rank them however you want, but I don't understand how anyone who knows anything about football would have it any other way.
Flacco and Ryan are breaking through and maybe Flacco even deserves to have his name mentioned up there at this point, but when you look at overall stats, winning, toughness, consistency, leadership and longevity, these are the guys...
I still find it unbelievable how disrespected Eli is. His 1 championship was called a fluke. Now, after he cemented his career with a 2nd title by literally carrying an otherwise mediocre team on his back, he's still coming in 8th on some list by Ron Jaworski?
1.Brady
2.Peyton
3.Rodgers
4.Brees
5.Eli
6.Big Ben
7.Flacco
8.Ryan
9.Rivers (I'm surprised he was so low)
10.Schaub
11.Romo (He was kind of low too)
12.Cutler
13.Stafford
I'm not bothering to rank the rest, I can't see how Jaws ranks second year players 10-13 in front of proven quality starters like Romo, Rivers, and Cutler.
At this point nothing is going to change. He is who he is. He is a gunslinger. He takes risks. He can be erratic. And he's cold as ice when the game is on the line.
the annual list or analyst that continually diminish what Eli has done. It wouldn't be a complete offseason if we didnt have at least 1 list that undersells Eli's talents.
is that in big games ... with championships on the line he has bested all of them that he's had to go up against ... and add a Favre to the list too ...
yup. Also, he is driving Gilbrides (or Coughlins - depending on who you ask lol) offense which is not an easy thing to do. I can't back this up with anything factual but I just think his statistics and rankings, for those that lean on those things, would be even higher if he played in some of these other offenses.
Peyton, Brady, Big Ben, Brees and Rodgers all on the same level. You can rank them anyway you want, but they are the elite, top tier quarterbacks in football.
Matt Ryan is a wet noodle and Flacco could potentially join that top tier group. Like Eli after 2007, he needs to follow up with a post-Super Bowl win bad ass season to be considered with the other six.
Jaws doesn't really care for Eli, he never has, he never will. I can see how he dings him for the INT's, but what about never missing a game? What about his career comeback totals? What about his defense being a disaster last year?
Jaws doesn't really paint the whole picture which is why getting upset at it is pointless.
Ben and Drew have comeback seasons, and Tom breaks in well with those new receivers. Drew I can understand w/SP back ,as well and that new vaunted RobR 'D'(sarcasm), but Ben? Tom? meh.
However, I can't criticize because Eli and Giants are usually ranked 30 in everything.According to the experts.
pretty much right around where everybody in the world outside of BBI would rank him. Some might have him a little higher (above Ben and Flacco). Some might have him a little lower, if they're going overboard on some of the new guys (which personally I wouldn't do yet, but there are some interesting young QBs).
But that's the range. Everywhere except BBI. Jaws isn't some clown who's trying to be bombastic for ratings. He puts time into it and probably has a lot of pride in his rankings.
Flacco isn't a better QB than Eli, but is likely to get a higher grade given his more recent success. Silly, but is to be expected. I have no issue with Eli being behind Ben. Rodgers/Brady/Peyton are the three that I'd say are definitively above Eli. After that I think you have some discretion.
I have always said, my wish, now after the SB wins and such is to see Eli in a new system. I think he would have much better numbers in another system. Just look at big ben in his new dink and dunk system. I don't want that for Eli would I wouldn't mind a lot more screens of all sorts like we had when Tiki was here. Make things easier for Eli. I want a system that will pad Eli's stats just like other QBs benefit from in their respective systems.
We are Eli's surrogate family. There would be something wrong
For example every objective analysis would tell you that Peyton Manning has been a better QB over the course of his career than Eli. The stats are all better and he's done it over a longer period of time.
But would anyone in their right mind take Peyton Manning in a must win game over Eli? Would anyone take Matt Ryan? Joe Flacco? I wouldn't. I'll tell you another guy that I put in the same light...Roethlisberger. He's shown himself to be a big QB in big spots.
I don't put much stock in rolling up stats on the Jaguars or or Buccaneers in week 9.
I have no problems with the system. The system has delivered two titles...more than every other team except Pittsburgh since Coughlin and Eli got here.
....but the fact is that he sucked last year in the games vs. Roethlisberger, Ryan and Flacco. Yes, our overall team performance in those games was putrid, but he was right there in the mix of suckiness.
Actually needs 1 more ring to seal his fate, people just refuse to give him his due, I am really hoping he comes up with one more run, then I want to hear all the experts. Maybe this time he knocks off Ben or Flacco in the final game, and maybe Kapernick , Rodgers, and Wilson in the NFC. Think that would finally seal it?
Eli at #8 is quite good, esp when you consider the QB's behind him. You could argue a few spots up (ahead of Flacco/Ryan) but those guys get the nod now due to their play and success last year. That's fine.
However, Matt Schaub at #9 ahead of RG3, Wilson, and even Romo???
That's an outrage.
I think Schaub is completely average - if there was ever a guy to rate at #15 it's him. That guy can't complete a pass on the move out of the pocket. Awful.
I'm more offended that Matt Schaub is that high than Eli is 8th. I would take chokin' Tony Romo over Matt Schaub 7 days a week, let alone the 4 young QBs.
Like someone else said, who really cares. I would take Eli over several of those QBs, but it isn't outlandish.
not that I really care about these type of lists, but Matt Ryan over
That is too small of a sample. Anything can happen in one game. Too many factors at work in and out of his control.
Let say if the Giants make the playoffs this year and Eli stinks it up and they lose. Would any of us think any less of him as a QB? The answer (I hope) is no.
I just don't get why one would not take the Player A who gives more consistent high level week-in and week-out performance than Player B who doesn't do it as much. The pure math would say that I stand a better chance of winning more games with Player A than Player B.
Folks want to make it about the playoffs and that's flawed. You have to get to the playoffs first. As we have found out first hand 3 of the last 4 years, we haven't even given ourselves a chance because the team hasn't been good enough over the 16 games that so many just readily dismiss out of hand.
I agree with you, but to a point. I don't weigh all games the same. A playoff game in Green Bay is not the same as a home game in October against Cleveland.
In the big games, Eli has come up big. You can say that 3 out of 4 years we've missed the playoffs...but I can say we won the Super Bowl the year we made it.
I don't want consistent. I want titles. We have two with Eli at QB. Matt Ryan can feel as great as he wants about his stats last year...he still quarterbacked the team that blew a 17-0 lead at home in the NFCC and got shut out in the second half. If I'm a Falcon fan I'm not coming out of 2012 happy.
GT, also keep in mind Matt Ryan is noticeably worse on the road
He's been surrounded by great talent at all the skill positions as well. Eli has had a revolving door at TE since Boss left, and he has helped bring along WR's that includes Nicks, Smith, Manningham, and Cruz. My biggest issue is that Matt Ryan has the lame "Matty Ice" monicker, when our QB is the more cutthroat killer in the 4th.
we were 10-6 and SHOULD HAVE BEEN 11-5..Fine, you either make the playoffs or you don't, but don't make it appear as though we sucked with a 10-6(*11-5) record..
and his best years may be ahead of him, Nicks, Cruz Randle Wilson and Myers might be the best group he's ever thrown to. Matt Ryan is younger but what Falcon fan wouldn't cash in his career for 2 championships? Brady, Ben, Peyton and Brees
will not be better than our guy in the coming years. If Brady beat us twice, he would be considered the best, hands down. Lets get another title or 2 with our best QB ever. Then Jaws and others can start rating him in the top ten all time.
For almost half our games last year.
Based on that having him at #8 is about right. Had he been better last year, not even great, he would probably be 4 or 5.
Its on the oline, wr health, and eli homself making bonehead decisions at times in 2nd half of year for why he is #8... Not jaws fault.
In sports, you don't get to decide which years you win.
We found this out the hard way when our best team, the '08 team, probably should have returned to the Super Bowl and had a good chance to win it all again. But because of a very unique set of circumstances, it didn't happen. Yet two of our other teams won Super Bowls when we least expected it.
All you can give yourself is a chance. Yes we have won. But those three other occasions, we gave ourselves no chance at all. The more chances you get, the better your chances are that eventually certain things will fall your way. In our case, we've had the fortune of winning in our small sample.
You mentioned Atlanta. Sure they didn't get to the Super Bowl last year. But the law of averages are in their favor that if they keep making the playoffs and gain a high seed, it will break right for them one of these years.
I don't think winning a Super Bowl is something that happens to you
I do think you get to decide when it happens...and in no case is this more true than in Eli Manning's, who played brilliantly in both the '07 and '11 playoffs...almost entirely on the road...and who made the decisive plays on the decisive drive in each of the Super Bowls.
As a fan I'm not interested in making the playoffs every year. I'm interested in winning Super Bowls.
And with Eli Manning this has happened twice. It is crucial to never forget it or try to marginalize that by pointing to the years we didn't win Super Bowls. 2 Super Bowl titles in 9 seasons is a better ratio than all but a handful of quarterbacks in the history of the sport. That's the ratio that matters. 50 years from now no one is going to ask how many times Eli's Giants made the playoffs.
as a fan I don't want to be Atlanta. I don't want to go 13-3 and have no faith that they're going to get through the playoffs (they're already blown 2 #1 seeds) to the Super Bowl.
I'd rather be the Giants. Instead of fearing the playoffs or thinking that we may have already blown our best shots, we KNOW that if we get into the playoffs no one is going to want to play us. Doesn't matter our record, doesn't matter if we're on the road. We've got the pelts on the wall to prove it.
Is Eli Manning a Franchise QB? Check
Can Eli Manning good enough to carry a shit team into the playoffs by himself? Check (2011)
Can Eli Manning play like the best QB in football for a 2 month stretch? Check
Is Eli Manning the best clutch QB in 4th quarters? Check
Is he inconsistent and does he have more stinkers than some of the other top QBs? Yes.
He's not a borderline perfect QB like Brady or Peyton have been. But he's a very good QB who can get on hot streaks that rival anyone's and has proven time after time that he can win the big game.
The difference between 5th and 8th is meaningless. The difference between 2 rings and 0 rings isn't.
I would put Eli tied with Big Ben for 5th but could see how a guy who
May not watch him every week could have Ryan and Flacco ahead of him. Atlanta is coming off of a huge year, Ryan threw for over 4700 yards with 32 TDs and a 68% completion rate. Flacco won the Super Bowl.
What counts is where his team is at the end of the season.
It's a TEAM GAME!
Yes, the QB is of prime importance, but there are so many factors that go into a team's success or failure that nobody's opinion is going to make a difference.
Stop letting these "Sports Journalists" ring your bells.
he isnt better than eli. maybe he had a better season, but as far as pure qb play, id take eli over him with ease.
flacco has great arm strength no doubt, but i dont see the pre-snap and post-snap phase in his game like we see with eli. in flaccos first few years in the league, he was a guy who never had a great understanding of coverages, the ability to decipher information based on defensive looks within a matter of nanoseconds & knowing where to go with the ball immediately like we see with the elite QBs (checking to a run doesnt count, everybody does that), hes just not in that class of the top QBs in the game. All he ever did was lock on to derrick mason, time and time again. he looked awful in the clutch in some postseason meetings, but he was young. Now baltimore has some fancy talent at TE and obviously better talent overall but he hasnt proven it to me.
I dont think hes in the brady/peyton/brees/rogers/eli class yet until I see him carry a passing game and a bad defense for an entire season on his shoulders. All of the QBs above did it, he NEVER has. Baltimore struggled on defense last year and the ravens had a brutal stretch of games (barely escaped san diego which wouldve caused a lengthy losing streak) and got a fluke win over dallas. Over the past few years the ravens have struggled to find an offensive identity behind flacco too, even trying some of that no huddle approach early in the season. To me, the ravens passing game is a big play, play action passing game and with flaccos plus arm strength, he gives you a big time downfield element, the TEs they drafted really helps as well. thats it, and kind of only it. when he has a season where he carries an offense, i'll be suprised. but he got his ring, and deserves his due
least the 7th best QB in the NFL -- and probably higher (as I think he'll be ahead of at least Ben, if not Ryan, as well) -- on a list like this that isn't just based on 2012, with a heavy weight to the playoffs. You can't take his SB ring or MVP away from him, he deserves significant credit for them, but you can also look at the overall body of work and then project from that what is also most likely to show up going forward.
I don't really have problem with Eli being 8th or so generally speaking because of what his flaws are and how he pretty much is a finished product at his age (his consistency issues aren't ever going to go away, unfortunately), but Flacco ahead of him right now on a list of this sort is just... stupid and, honestly, should be below Jaworski.
"Eli would have had the same year with the Falcons recievers "
Eli has never put up Brees or Rodgers numbers.
He also can got into some very bad slumps like a big slugger.
But he is durable, capable of leading and carrying a team on his back, just not consistent.
pointed out that Eli is still a top, top quality QB, and he said he dropped Eli a bit more because he was slightly more inconsistent in 2012, and other QB's had improved and so they moved up.
He also had tons of respect for Eli pre-snap, he said he is one of the very best at reading defensive alignments and getting his team aligned for the D called.
He likes Eli just fine, and I think he is pretty fair with Eli. He pointed out how hard he works on film, and I think he totally gets how clutch he is.
#8 is no big deal, Jaws will give him a fair shake during the year, and I think he does a good job calling Eli's games.

Just look at our offensive rank since Eli came to our team.

So this "Eli will never put up Brees' numbers." or talks about inconsistency don't work as to what the logic behind this actual list is.
