Eli Manning Highest Cap # in the NFL This Season

Josh in the City : 7/15/2013 5:01 pm
Eli's earned every penny we could ever pay him. But for the salary cap experts here, is this because he's restructured his contract in the past or is he simply paid more than anyone else? Why does he have such a higher cap # than players like Brady, Roethlisberger, etc?

would Nassib's Cap hit be?
When you sign a player
robbieballs2003 : 7/15/2013 5:07 pm : link
you are going to have to pay him at some point. Eli signed his deal a few years ago and has restructured at least once and probably more. That means that since that happened a couple of years ago this is when the big portions of the contract kick in.

You can pretty much eliminate all other positions except QB here. What other QBs can be compared to Eli as a QB?

Peyton (just signed last year)
Brady (just extended his deal this year I think)
Brees (just got a new deal last year I think)
Rodgers (just got a new deal this year)
Flacco (just signed a new deal this year)
Ryan (I don't know his contract situation)

If I missed anybody I apologize but because Eli signed his deal a few years ago and has restructured (helped out last year but put more money in other years) it only makes sense that he is the highest paid player this year in terms of cap space.

good explanation. I had a feeling it was b/c he had restructured and was in the middle of his contract but wasn't sure.
it's
Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/15/2013 5:10 pm : link
a good thing when you can carry (not postpone) a big cap hit. If the Giants can get away without re-structuring him this year, it will provide more cap freedom down the road.

But I wouldn't be shocked to see a new restructured deal for Eli soon.
Easy answer
BigBlueDownTheShore : 7/15/2013 5:10 pm : link
Guys like Brady, Peyton Manning, and Brees are on the latter half of their careers, so they aren't making as much since they have declining talent. I'm surprised Ben isn't up there on the list, but there is a ton more risk involved with Ben since he is constantly hurt, and has had questionable behavior (Motorcycle Accident/Rap Allegations.

20 million for a franchise QB with 2 rings in their prime sounds pretty good to me.

will be able to give you the best explanation but I just put it in "dummy" terms. I'm not calling you a dummy. I'm talking about my way of taking something someone like Optimus can give facts to and dumb that part down to more assumptions. I think I am correct regarding the other QBs on the list. Eli may be the highest paid player the next two years (guessing) but after that I would expect the other players to take a nice jump up in regard to the cap.

I don't think that is true. They signed some hefty deals.
here are the contracts for QBs

Notice how Eli compares overall to other QB contracts.

Robbie,

Yes Brady, signed a big contract a while ago, and is probably on the tailend of that contract. Peyton just signed his deal, and non of it was guaranteed until this year due to his neck. Brees just signed last offseason, and will surely have a higher cap hit next year, where Eli will probably be flat or extended giving him a lower cap hit.
Pretty good coin
Blue Grit : 7/15/2013 5:24 pm : link
for the 8th best QB in the league...
Eli
stretch234 : 7/15/2013 5:24 pm : link
After this year, he will only have 8M of bonus money for cap purposes over the 14 & 15 years. They will really be in good shape next year to redo a deal with extension for 1 last contract
Look at the bright side:
Big Blue Blogger : 7/15/2013 5:26 pm : link
When Eli's contract is up in two years, it won't cost much more to tag him, because he's already the most expensive player in the League.

Seriously, Eric hit the key point: the Giants are doing the right thing by taking the cap pain now rather than kicking the can down the road. As Eli ages, you want his dead-money load to trend down, not up.

Brady just recently signed a huge extension to his old deal.

30 year old "franchise" Pro Bowl QB is not taking up a lot of cap space now, be worried about the future cap hit.
Eli at $20.8 for 2013
mfsd : 7/15/2013 5:32 pm : link
is a lot better value than Sanchez at $12.8

nevermind about Brady
robbieballs2003 : 7/15/2013 5:33 pm : link
He signed a three year extension of $27 million which lowered his cap total but pays him until he is 40.
The easy answer is
RB^2 : 7/15/2013 5:35 pm : link
it's just the way his contract is structured. Honestly, it's probably not a bad thing at this point. Better to just clear the number this year and make room for next year as opposed to pushing some of it to next year. This also applies to Snee and Rolle.
Finnegan...
dcgiantsfan : 7/15/2013 5:36 pm : link
...at $15M...wow!!!
Eli just has a really big contract
Blue Baller : 7/15/2013 5:37 pm : link
hit cap hit stays at 20 mil a year, there is no getting through or over anything

I don't know
Giantfan in skinland : 7/15/2013 5:47 pm : link
In general, I agree with much of the above....but there's also part of me that wonders if the logic of taking the cap pain now makes sense. Are we likely to find Eli's equal within a year or two of his decline? You'd hope so, but the answer is probably not. Few teams go from Peyton to Luck.

If that's the case, does it maybe make sense to delay the pain until he's gone figuring that we're gonna have a couple of down years in that time anyways and trying to maximize the talent Eli is surrounded with?
I believe Eli restructured
Dave in MD : 7/15/2013 6:03 pm : link
the previous 3 years moving cap money into this year to save the team money in those years. If we need to do, we can extend him again to lower his cap number and give him more guaranteed money.
Hope he uses this extra money

exactly what robbieballs said...
Amtoft : 7/15/2013 6:09 pm : link
it depends when you are in your contract. Talk to me in 3-4 years when Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, and Drew Brees contracts are in high gear
Actually Rodgers cap hit never gets much over 20 mil
Blue Baller : 7/15/2013 6:17 pm : link
But yeah, Flaco and Brees start shooting up into the high 20s and low 30s
The way the Cruz thing went, it now looks a restructure for Eli won't
Optimus-NY : 7/15/2013 8:26 pm : link
be needed unless something catastrophic in training camp and/or the preseason takes place. A small restructure to Weatherford's deal may be all that is required (this could give them as much as an additional $738,750 in cap room for 2013).

Eric and I were going back and forth about the Eli cap space topic for this coming season with each other right before my July 8th salary cap article was published, and ironically a day before the Cruz deal was announced. Right now, I think they'll be okay with a small restructure to get them by, like the one for Weatherford I mentioned. Next year is still the year to extend Easy E's deal though, especially because of the impending free agency of JPP and Nicks.

big cap hit = 2 super bowl wins
D HOS : 7/15/2013 8:50 pm : link
I'll take it!

Yeah I know defense and all... but still. He's certainly delivered on the promise.

I'd like the Giants not to get too clever with cap management, and they usually don't. In this case just grit the teeth and pay the man, ride it out and through and don't push the cap hit down the road like other teams do too many times and get burned.
nothing wrong
Dave in MD : 7/15/2013 9:09 pm : link
with pushing the cap can down the road until the season Eli retires if it means adding or keeping a key receiver or a key cog on defense. We are in our championship window and will likely need to retool when Eli is gone.
cut him

Completely agree - we'll likely have a 2-3 year window of mediocrity once Eli retires, unless we get very lucky. And while we seldom sacrifice the long-term for the short-term, I suspect they will make a push to do exactly that once they get the sense Eli is in his final few years (assuming Eli ages gracefully).
Being able to absorb Eli's big hit this year
awm34 : 7/16/2013 8:29 am : link
greatly improves, one would think, our position for next year (to sign Nicks to a long term deal).
