Eli's earned every penny we could ever pay him. But for the salary cap experts here, is this because he's restructured his contract in the past or is he simply paid more than anyone else? Why does he have such a higher cap # than players like Brady, Roethlisberger, etc?

You can pretty much eliminate all other positions except QB here. What other QBs can be compared to Eli as a QB?
Peyton (just signed last year)
Brady (just extended his deal this year I think)
Brees (just got a new deal last year I think)
Rodgers (just got a new deal this year)
Flacco (just signed a new deal this year)
Ryan (I don't know his contract situation)
If I missed anybody I apologize but because Eli signed his deal a few years ago and has restructured (helped out last year but put more money in other years) it only makes sense that he is the highest paid player this year in terms of cap space.
But I wouldn't be shocked to see a new restructured deal for Eli soon.
20 million for a franchise QB with 2 rings in their prime sounds pretty good to me.

Seriously, Eric hit the key point: the Giants are doing the right thing by taking the cap pain now rather than kicking the can down the road. As Eli ages, you want his dead-money load to trend down, not up.

If that's the case, does it maybe make sense to delay the pain until he's gone figuring that we're gonna have a couple of down years in that time anyways and trying to maximize the talent Eli is surrounded with?
Eric and I were going back and forth about the Eli cap space topic for this coming season with each other right before my July 8th salary cap article was published, and ironically a day before the Cruz deal was announced. Right now, I think they'll be okay with a small restructure to get them by, like the one for Weatherford I mentioned. Next year is still the year to extend Easy E's deal though, especially because of the impending free agency of JPP and Nicks.
Yeah I know defense and all... but still. He's certainly delivered on the promise.
I'd like the Giants not to get too clever with cap management, and they usually don't. In this case just grit the teeth and pay the man, ride it out and through and don't push the cap hit down the road like other teams do too many times and get burned.

with pushing the cap can down the road until the season Eli retires if it means adding or keeping a key receiver or a key cog on defense. We are in our championship window and will likely need to retool when Eli is gone.
Completely agree - we'll likely have a 2-3 year window of mediocrity once Eli retires, unless we get very lucky. And while we seldom sacrifice the long-term for the short-term, I suspect they will make a push to do exactly that once they get the sense Eli is in his final few years (assuming Eli ages gracefully).
