We all know that somewhere in the near future, Coughlin is going to retire and that the Giants like to promote from within/ hire people who have been with the organization before. That being said here are my top choices:
1) Sean Payton- Yes he has a bad rap for the whole Bounty Gate, thing, but I would love to see Eli play in his offensive system, and he is one of the most successful coaches that has previously worked for the Giants.
2) John Fox- He has been to a Superbowl, and has a fairly decent record as a head coach. Most importantly, he would bring toughness back to our defense which we all would love to see.
3) Mike Sullivan- He is a rising star in the league, and is running a similar offense in Tampa, so there would be less of a transition if he took over.
Very open to the idea of Sullivan.
I like the idea of Sullivan though.
His entire tenure has been completely mishandled, in an embarrassing fashion.
He needs a quality owner and front office behind him and I bet he'd get much better results.
Having said that, I really have no clue or preference on where they go. Depends on who is available and who the hot new coordinator is. If it were up to me, Id go with Cowher because he is a Vet coach who has done it before.
He is not going anywhere anytime soon and in that time who knows who will come up in the NFL.
If Sullivan doesn't have a HC gig by then, my guess would be him.
New system and new terminology
New coach brings in his own assistant coaches; old ones leave
New players arrive that the new coach worked with
New players arrive who may be better suited to the new system (for example: perhaps a 3-4 instead of 4-3)
Chaos. Dogs & cats living together, etc.
It' simple to start naming ex-coaches or other associated with the Giants. How about looking outside?
On that list, only Sullivan makes sense but it's hard to say now who will be available or when TC will actually retire.
Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin
Stanford's David Shaw
Vanderbilt's James Franklin
My guess would be four or five years and one more super bowl win.
By that time some new name coach might be the man , as far as Spitter goes the man takes forever to mold a team, no thanks.
As far as the current coach goes he's going to ride #10, his ticket to the hall of fame, as long as the Giants let him. The minute #10 is gone there will be a new Head Coach for the Giants.
Realistically, it's going to be Gilbride or Fewell, and then all hell will break loose on BBI.
The only way this will not happen is if during the year or two Coughlin has left, the tires fall completely off.
I just have a feeling that if they look outside, it's going to be Cowher. I think Sullivan could be a candidate if Tampa's O takes off.
It also wouldn't shock me if Belichick wound up back here to finish out his career.
That might be something Wellington might do, but not Reese/Mara.
There's not a chance in hell he's ever going to HC the Giants. As much as the thought sickens me, even Fewell has a significantly better chance at the job post-Coughlin (not that he has much of one himself, hopefully).
