Who Takes over when Coughlin Retires?

BigBlueDownTheShore : 7/17/2013 9:48 am
We all know that somewhere in the near future, Coughlin is going to retire and that the Giants like to promote from within/ hire people who have been with the organization before. That being said here are my top choices:

1) Sean Payton- Yes he has a bad rap for the whole Bounty Gate, thing, but I would love to see Eli play in his offensive system, and he is one of the most successful coaches that has previously worked for the Giants.

2) John Fox- He has been to a Superbowl, and has a fairly decent record as a head coach. Most importantly, he would bring toughness back to our defense which we all would love to see.

3) Mike Sullivan- He is a rising star in the league, and is running a similar offense in Tampa, so there would be less of a transition if he took over.

No thanks on Fox
Giantology : 7/17/2013 9:53 am : link
And Payton is just signed an extension with NO.

Very open to the idea of Sullivan.

Mara would never hire Payton, imo..
Big Blue '56 : 7/17/2013 9:54 am : link
Hopefully NOT Fox as he's rather average unless you believe he didn't step in shit with Peyton..Sullivan seems to be favored by a bunch here. I don't know much about him or how the Giants feel about him
How about Jason Garrett?
Britt in VA : 7/17/2013 9:55 am : link
?
How did the Mike Sullivan thing
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/17/2013 9:56 am : link
get such legs?
A lot of people forget
mrvax : 7/17/2013 9:57 am : link
that Sean Payton stole hydrocodone from the Saints locker room and that was swept under the rug. Has Payton recovered from this? Is he still using?

Tim in Eternal Blue : 7/17/2013 9:58 am : link
If he would commit to longer than a few years. I think he's 55 now?
I'm not sure
Giants : 7/17/2013 10:00 am : link
Coughlin is going to retire in next two to three years. As long as he is healthy he will be coaching. He and Pope who I believe is 70 are lifers. This is what they love to do
I don't think Jason Garrett would be that bad
RB^2 : 7/17/2013 10:01 am : link
He has a history with the Giants and seems to be a fit character-wise. He hasn't gotten great results in Dallas but coaching for JJ can't be easy. I'd like to see what he can do working with Reese and Eli.
Britt, not sure if you're being facetious,
Big Blue '56 : 7/17/2013 10:02 am : link
but if not, here's a vote for Garrett, whom I believe would do well away from Jerry Jones
If perry fewell can shape
brandozilla : 7/17/2013 10:03 am : link
the defense up, i'm sure he'd be considered.
I like the idea of Sullivan though.
I'm dead serious.
Britt in VA : 7/17/2013 10:03 am : link
Garrett has been hamstrung from day one with the Cowboys, starting with the way he was hired.

His entire tenure has been completely mishandled, in an embarrassing fashion.

He needs a quality owner and front office behind him and I bet he'd get much better results.
Interesting topic
gmen9892 : 7/17/2013 10:06 am : link
and one that is going to gain steam if we have another average season this year. Contract is up after next season, and as much as I hate doing it, we have to start looking towards life after TC. He is going to be 67 when his contract is up, and you would have to think he is going to hang 'em up after that.

Having said that, I really have no clue or preference on where they go. Depends on who is available and who the hot new coordinator is. If it were up to me, Id go with Cowher because he is a Vet coach who has done it before.
It's obviously
Josh in the City : 7/17/2013 10:12 am : link
going to be Cowher. He's been waiting years for Coughlin to retire (or get fired) before he returns to the NFL.
Sully offers continuity, youth, and is a system fit
Optimus-NY : 7/17/2013 10:15 am : link
He coached here before and is a coordinator now using our system in Tampa Bay. Players universally loved him here. He feels like the next guy. Garrett is a guy who would be a nice dark horse candidate for the Giants job IMO. Dallas is a horrible spot for him.
3 days after the season ended TC was on with Francessa
Chef : 7/17/2013 10:15 am : link
and in three days into the offseason he was repeatedly stating that he already has no idea what he is gonna do with himself.

He is not going anywhere anytime soon and in that time who knows who will come up in the NFL.
Do you really think Cowher has been waiting on Coughlin to retire
AnotherGiantsFan : 7/17/2013 10:21 am : link
He seems like he has no interest to be a coach anytime soon whenever he's asked about it.

If Sullivan doesn't have a HC gig by then, my guess would be him.
Chucky
mattlawson : 7/17/2013 10:21 am : link
he always said he wanted to coach a manning.
My dark horse candidate
bceagle05 : 7/17/2013 10:23 am : link
would be the Stanford head coach, if he's not already in the league by the time TC hangs'em up.
I always liked Garrett
djm : 7/17/2013 10:30 am : link
but he has no one to blame but himself for what's gone on in Dallas the last 2 years. Two straight years they had the east on a platter and shit the bed. With that said, he may have a better 2nd act thanks to some seasoning. He's definitely a talented mind.
Better question: What happens when TC retires?
Marty in Albany : 7/17/2013 10:30 am : link
New coach =
New system and new terminology
New coach brings in his own assistant coaches; old ones leave
New players arrive that the new coach worked with
New players arrive who may be better suited to the new system (for example: perhaps a 3-4 instead of 4-3)

Chaos. Dogs & cats living together, etc.
Umm guys...
Blue Baller : 7/17/2013 10:42 am : link
I'm right here...
Coughlin isn't going anywhere, though
djm : 7/17/2013 10:43 am : link
he's gonna coach this team for another 5 years or so. Just watch.
Really a stupid question
GMANinDC : 7/17/2013 10:44 am : link
because we have no idea when he is going to retire and who will be available..

It' simple to start naming ex-coaches or other associated with the Giants. How about looking outside?
By the time Cowher chooses to return
JonC : 7/17/2013 10:46 am : link
he'll have a learning curve to tackle, given how long he's been out of coaching.

On that list, only Sullivan makes sense but it's hard to say now who will be available or when TC will actually retire.
In a city and league where there are few secrets...
sr267 : 7/17/2013 10:46 am : link
it amazes me that this is one that no one has a true read on. It seems like Coughlin has told no one what his plans are, or if he has, they ain't talking.

jayg5 : 7/17/2013 10:49 am : link
For awhile I have thought Shaw would be a good choice as well. I would like to see how he does at Stanford for a couple more years however without Harbaughs recruits.
I'm more interested in
bob in tx : 7/17/2013 10:54 am : link
knowing who the next DC will be.
The reason there are no "clues"
robbieballs2003 : 7/17/2013 10:54 am : link
Is because TC has no plans to retire. It is that simple. The only reason this constantly comes up is because of his age. My response to that is you are only as old as you feel and he is younger than most 40 year olds. It is not in his DNA to retire. What the hell is he going to do? He already said, if I am not mistaken, that he would not want a management job in the NFL. If that is the case then where is he going to go? The only thing that could pry him from football is maybe doing something to promote the sport and/or charity work. He needs to stay active in football. If he was 50 nobody would be talking about him retiring because he has never given any signs of retirement.
didn't we run Sullivan out of town???

how about Schiano? talk about a web site exploding

j/k
Though I don't see Coughlin goig anywhere any time soon
sjnyfan : 7/17/2013 11:03 am : link
3 coaches I'd like are:

Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin
Stanford's David Shaw
Vanderbilt's James Franklin
Good point, jay.
bceagle05 : 7/17/2013 11:03 am : link
I think Reese will want a fresh face, which is why I'd rule out the Cowhers and Grudens of the world. I think he'd go for a younger guy he could work with for a long period of time.
Retires?!
Knineteen : 7/17/2013 11:07 am : link
One more bad season and there will be calls for his head. Not that I'm advocating it but this is still NY...
I don't even want to think about this.

I just hope we hire a fresh face
David in LA : 7/17/2013 11:12 am : link
instead of a retread just because he has a name. Out of the names I've seen, I'd want Sullivan to come back.
Wasn't Coughlin kind of a retread
Curtis in VA : 7/17/2013 11:13 am : link

that Bill Belichick will return at some point and finish his coaching career with the New York Giants. Have NO IDEA how & when it's going to play out but I think he makes his return at some point. Just my opinion!
enough with the Cowher crap. He's out too long already
Victor in CT : 7/17/2013 11:46 am : link
and his teams gagged in the playoffs too many times.
Who doesn't love a redemption story?
Bluenatic : 7/17/2013 11:52 am : link
I Would put money on it being Gilbride
JFIB : 7/17/2013 11:53 am : link
If Eli is still the starting QB when TC calls it quits, I would be shocked if they didn't hand the whistle to Gilbride. I think they probably wouldn't want to change the system up on Eli unless by the time this rolls around, the offense is no longer effective.
If Eli is still the starting QB when Coughlin quits.
Curtis in VA : 7/17/2013 11:58 am : link
To me it makes more sense to keep Gilbride as OC. Don't mess with that relationship.
I think they follow a similar path
UberAlias : 7/17/2013 12:00 pm : link
To what the Steelers did when Cowher retired, especially if Eli is still the starting QB. Sullivan makes the most sense of the names mentioned. Gilbride Jr. I could also see, if he shines.

just may flourish under a different command. He certainly has a lot of experience and football smarts. Plus, he can be the emergency 3rd QB.

am interested to see how Reese goes about it and of course who his choice would be. I am a fan of Reese but I can't say he's one of the best just because he has never had to choose a Head Coach, or draft a QB. Everything else Reese has done has been well above average with two Super Bowl titles to show for it but let's be honest and fair in saying he hasn't had to make a decision of hiring a head coach and maybe even more importantly drafting a franchise qb.
