I figured that season was his favorite during his time here as well. I don't think there has been a better game than that NFCG in Candlestick that I've seen in my lifetime.
As much as I love Coughlin, I'll always view Parcells as our Lombardi, Landry, Shula, etc. Obviously he rubbed a lot of fans the wrong way with the timing of his exit and then eventually how he ended up with the Jets and the Cowboys, but I never cared about that...he got us 2 titles. Thats all that mattered to me. I thought Papa hit it right on the head saying BP was a Jersey guy that fit perfectly with those teams of the 80s.
It was a good interview, but I wouldn't have minded hearing his thoughts on the 88 Jets loss and the 89 Flipper game. Did he think those teams had a shot? I thought the 89 team did at least. Also, about the Giants/49ers rivalry in the 80's, to me one of the most underrated rivalries in NFL history.
Francesa, who was obviously very close with Parcells for yeas, has said that Parcells thought the 89 team was the best of the bunch. I was only 2 so I obviously don't remember it, but that game had to be gut wrenching.
The Flipper Anderson game was gut wrenching. After he ran into the tunnel, everyone just stood in the stands in complete shock. Very similar to the DeSean Jackson game. Thankfully both of those miserable games were followed by a memorable SB run the following year.
From a coach whose giants days were before my time. It was interesting to hear him say he probably pushed too hard early on. Do you guys think he meant it in a way similar to Coughlin when he changed his attitude/treatment of the players in '07? Who do you think was the tougher coach to play for?
Also, the 1990 NFCCG sounds a lot like the 2011 game. I remember still being anxious after that 2011 game. I will never forget Ei's composure in not making the big mistake. You knew that game was going to be decided by a turnover.
He should never have left the Giants. Great coach, personality made
its funny you mention that cuz Couglin was on that 90 staff. So maybe their coaching personalities were similar because of Coughlin being mentored. I would say the biggest difference to me was just personality.
If I had to compare SB's I would say the 90 sb was like sb 42 for me. In both cases they were big underdogs and most people thought they'd get blown out. Of course the way the game played out was different in that 90 we pretty much dominated and in sb42 we pulled one out of our ass. The game winning drive was sloppy but the results were great.
For the last sb I was as confident as I was in 86 even though we only won by 4. My confidence was breaking early in the 4th but once we got the ball back for that final drive I felt that we were going to win.
Reading this thread inspired me to watch the DVD of that Title game.
Two great defensive teams. As Madden said, the Giants' defense did not miss tackles. I can't remember one in that game. (This defense in same class with Bears 1985? Most would say no.)
And they not only tackled, but they hit. Hard. Both defenses. I counted about three or four hits that would have drawn a flag today. Most obvious was Jim Burt apparently driving his helmet into Hostetler's knee at full speed. I say apparently because I don't think Burt would have intentionally gone after any player's knee.

How many Pro Bowlers? Geesh.
The interview was top-notch.
And Bill handled him just right.
Even if he resurrected Dallas.
