The Lambuth Special

Matt in SGS : 7/19/2013 9:15 pm
Not that this is a game that I want to re-live (nor will I do a review of it), but someone posted the full game of the 2001 Giants @ Eagles game. It was a back and forth game as the Giants were fighting to make the playoffs at 7-7. After Aikers hit the FG to take the lead 24-21, and the Giants on the 20 yard line with :07 and no timeouts, you'd figure to get a hail mary, or a Cal-Stanford type thing.

We got the Jim Fassel inspired "Lambuth Special", a pass over the middle to Tiki Barber, who flipped the ball back to Ron Dixon, the fastest guy on the team. In a variation of the hook and ladder, Dixon got the ball and raced up the sidelines with blockers in front. Bobby Taylor was the only guy in front to slow it up at all, as Jurevicius got out to block him. Toomer also out in front, had a tough job trying to block Mickell coming over as well. Dixon was downed at the 4 yard line and I can say I've never seen a play like this before and couldn't believe it as it happened.

Someone posted the full game (Eagles fan apparently). So if you want to go back and see the Lambuth Special again, here is your chance.

I really, really thought he was going to score. When he got stopped I kinda just stared dumbly at the TV like ".........."

It was so close.

was this, a top 25 Giants postseason moments video. Cleanses the palate rather well. Damn I miss Pat Summerall.

Amen, that's my buddy Sam, who had posted all those awesome videos but his channel was shut down. He's building that new channel up.
Thanks for posting this!

I listened to this game on the radio and never got to actually see this play until now. I always wondered what exactly happened.
I remember
Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/19/2013 10:14 pm : link
watching that play. My wife had walked away from the game and I didn't want to jinx anything during the play by saying "Hey, they can win this!"

So I kept my mouth shut and just watched. F#ck, they almost did it.
Awful job by the Giants defense that game..

I also remember Fassel running the trick play in the 2nd half which tied the game. Collins threw a screen to Tiki who threw it back to Collins and then hit Toomer on a bomb for a TD. The next year the Giants ran that same play in Indy and it worked there too.

That was a bitter defeat.

The official name of the play was "86 Lambuth", since Dixon wore #86.
I was at the game...

in the second row in the end zone he was running toward. I really thought he was going to make it. The stadium got so suddenly quiet and my fellow Giant fan (and former BBIer) started going nuts. And then just like that *snap* it was over. Sigh.
PS

I thought it was Damon Moore that came across?

Man now I'm going to have to watch it and relive the agony. Fuck!

I haven't thought of that game in years
Sneakers O'toole : 7/19/2013 11:14 pm : link
watched it at a sports bar that seemed to be about equal parts Giants and Eagles fans. It was fun. I thought Dixon was going to make it.
The trick play was actually a sweep by Barber not a screen.
giantsfour : 7/19/2013 11:26 pm : link
You can not have two forward passes on the same play. It was a great play call since there was not a defender within 25 yards of Toomer.

I'm not at all sure what you are talking about. It was a short pass to Tiki who then flipped it backward to Dixon.
Was referring to the trick play
giantsfour : 7/20/2013 12:04 am : link
that tied the game. It was a sweep to Barber who lateraled to Collins who threw to a wide open Toomer.

I'd forgotten how close that play came to working. Would have been sweet if it had.

it was said that todd haley & ken weisenhut stole that designed flea flicker pass they used against jim johnsons defense right from this games flea flicker to amani toomer. talk about digging deep in the archives on their part

wish nfl rewind doesn't only go back to the 2009 season. just put all the damn games up for sale, or at least the classics from each year. they would make a lot of money
Ah...
Chris in Philly : 7/20/2013 12:14 am : link
Never mind!
I was in the 700 level in the endzone he was headed
Banks : 7/20/2013 12:15 am : link
Chris is right, they went dead silent for a bit. It felt much longer than it probably was. It's hard to tell from the TV shot, but I remember Dixon losing steam pretty far back and he'd be short. I held on for hope, but alas he was short. I also remember that game was cold as hell. I couldn't feel my feet when i left
We also ran a flea flicker against the Colts in 2002...
arcarsenal : 7/20/2013 4:26 am : link
I believe it was Collins who tossed it to Barber who tossed it back to Collins who hit Toomer all the way downfield for a TD. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first play of the 2nd half.

That was the point in that season where our offense really came alive and I think a lot of us were like.. "whoa.. I've never seen a dynamic Giant offense like this".. but with Barber, Toomer at his best, Shockey.. we had some weapons... and Collins played really well.
Toomer was fucking amazing that year by the way.

I seem to remember it being '76 Lambuth Special

because Dixon was born in 1976.

Tiki did
River Mike : 7/20/2013 7:03 am : link
a great job on the pitch back to Dixon. He never appeared to look back at Dixon, gaining that extra split second keeping the defenders eyes on him instead of Dixon, and the pitch was right on target enabling Dixon to not break stride.
Gilbride should start a game off with that play

Dixon has now moved to Orlando, Florida where he is a health insurance agent and the Director of Public Relations for the Tenncom Group, an insurance agency and Professional Employer Organization (PEO) brokerage. He is now in the process of developing a health/disability insurance program for athletes to insure against career ending injuries.

It was an horrific tease which left me lamenting that it occurred at all..If we were going to lose, I would have preferred that it never took place..

A bit of a sneak preview for the 2002 Giants vs Colts review, which I hope to finish next week (work keeps getting in the way). But I've already captured that highlight. Helluva throw by Collins here.

thanks for posting that. I remember watching that play and first thinking, same play worked against Philly last year too.

That game was awesome.

Kerry threw that ball 60 yds in the air...great throw.
I remember the Giants scoring a TD late..
Sean in PA : 7/20/2013 9:00 am : link
and Ron Dayne converting the 2 point conversion late in the game. Ugh the defense couldn't hold.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't we still have needed TB to beat Philly the next week and for us to beat GB the next week in order to get in? Still would have been an awesome win though.
yea
Banks : 7/20/2013 2:32 pm : link
it was long shot. 2001 had so many close games. Early on, we had some heart breakers. There was the rams which ended on Jurevicius bobble for an int in FG range. I remember in 02 we got a boatload of insane calls against us, but I thought we had a few suspect ones in this one like the Garnes penalty. He grazed the helmet and got a 15 yard penalty for tackling by the helmet. The next week was the first eagles game where Williams shanked a punt in a 9-3 game at the end of the 4th to give the eagles the W. The skins game was a long shot, but Collins hit dixon right in the numbers in the endzone only for him to bobble it away for an int. We probably still would have lost as we would have been down 7 yet.
Absolutely loved the opening of this game
mattnyg05 : 7/20/2013 8:36 pm : link
showing the teams fighting on the field beforehand. I was so pumped up for the game.

Armstead, Hamilton, etc took no shit from anyone.
And I agree
mattnyg05 : 7/20/2013 8:39 pm : link
for a season where they didn't make the playoffs and where a terrible tragedy occurred, 2001 from a competitive game standpoint had some of the best down-to-the wire Giant games ever. Not to mention Strahan really dominating without another pass rusher on the entire team.
