Surprise Rookie of Camp?

TC : 7/25/2013 3:01 pm
Yeah, I've had enough off-season, and can't wait for camp to start. And I've been reading article after article with predictions by various sports writers about who is going to do what, which units will shine, etc. Even how individual teams will do this season. And about the only thing we know is that history has proven it's pretty much all BS. But hell, it's their job to write it anyway.

So like these pro's, I feel compelled to select a surprise rookie from those heading for camp. No less BS than those who get paid, but it passes the time.

First, while I'm sure there will be little agreement about what even CONSTITUES a surprise rookie, I'll pick Damontre Moore. Under-achieving Combine performer who fell in the draft, and some feel isn't the most astute DL to ever take the field.

I predict (With the same unerring accuracy as the Pro's.) that he will work his way into the rotation despite a coaching preference for error free vets to talented but mistake prone rookies.

I think Cooper Taylor
Josh in the City : 7/25/2013 3:03 pm : link
is going to be a good player. I also think he gets on the field quite a bit this season.
I'm in the Cooper Taylor camp too.

I don't think Moore
pjcas18 : 7/25/2013 3:08 pm : link
having a good camp would be a real surprise.

He was very highly rated by a lot of people pre-combine and most draftniks love the pick.

Cooper taylor would be a surprise IMO.

I'll say Michael Cox. I think he sticks and maybe KR and a rotational RB. Knocking Da'Rell Scott off the roster perhaps.
I know what Stu is going to say:
Anakim : 7/25/2013 3:11 pm : link
Etienne Sabino.

For me, I'll go with DaMonster
ERIC HERMAN.
Curtis in VA : 7/25/2013 3:15 pm : link

Taylor's definitely the most intriguing
Greg from LI : 7/25/2013 3:16 pm : link
That kind of size and speed is rare in a safety.
I'll be in the minority
snumber6 : 7/25/2013 3:17 pm : link
but somehow I feel Nassib will show a lot in camp early on and get some 1st team reps during preseason games ...
Mike Cox will surprise.

beats out Diehl for the starting RT spot.
I like Moore also
Ed A. : 7/25/2013 3:28 pm : link
I have a feeling he just might be the steal of the draft. Needs to get bigger, stronger and learn how to be a pro.
Mike Cox exploding
ZoneXDOA : 7/25/2013 3:31 pm : link
In camp will be no surprise at all...
DaMonster!
Dave : 7/25/2013 3:34 pm : link
and maybe Nassib, assuming he signs and reports on time
Moore...
Dunedin81 : 7/25/2013 3:40 pm : link
his 40 time sucked but his peripheral #'s were very good for his position and the tape is excellent. He also won't be relied upon to do it all, he'll probably be predominately a situational/rotational guy.
Like what I read about Charles James
AandPBBWC : 7/25/2013 3:41 pm : link
so I am going with him. Be nice to see a undrafted guy make the team especially at CB.
Can't see it being Moore
BillT : 7/25/2013 3:42 pm : link
With Tuck, JPP, Kiwi and probably Tracy as the regular 4 DE to be on the 45-man I would think it's likely Moore gets a red shirt this year. Hankins will probably make the biggest impact and Pugh may start but as 1 & 2 that wouldn't be that much of a surprise. Cooper Taylor has a chance with Hill suspended at least as a ST ace.
Tuck could get reps inside...
Dunedin81 : 7/25/2013 3:44 pm : link
and who knows what we have in Tracy. That assumes everyone is healthy too, which sooner or later they won't be. They'll find work for Moore.

Good call on Hankins, he may not be a fixture on the stat sheet but if he keeps Joseph fresh he could be huge.
Moore seems like he has a lot to learn.
Randy in CT : 7/25/2013 3:51 pm : link
Pugh might need some time to supplant someone. Taylor might be a good candidate given his abilities as well as the competition.
Moore needs work to become a complete DE...
Dunedin81 : 7/25/2013 3:52 pm : link
but he looked good enough at getting to the QB that there might be an opportunity for him from Day 1.
I h8 your idea
Randy in CT : 7/25/2013 3:56 pm : link
of Tuck inside. He's perpetually dinged and we now have some bodies at DT.
Also, I forgot
Randy in CT : 7/25/2013 3:56 pm : link
about Hankins. Can I change my vote?
I'm not rooting for it...
Dunedin81 : 7/25/2013 3:58 pm : link
at least not for major reps there, but he's played some DT every year for the last seven, right?
Hoping it is
TMS : 7/25/2013 4:03 pm : link
Cooper Taylor.
Agree with Bill T and Randy(ugh?)...
bob in tx : 7/25/2013 4:06 pm : link
expect this to be redshirt year for Moore as he has a lot to learn about playing DE. I'm hoping Hermann is the surprise but expect it will be Cox.
by redshirt
pjcas18 : 7/25/2013 4:14 pm : link
do you mean practice squad? on the 53-man, but inactive every week? or active usually, just not seeing the field?

I do not consider DE a strong position right now for the Giants, if Moore shows he can get to the passer, I don't see him inactive. He's a rookie so I don't expect much, even from Pugh for that matter, but I view Moore as the guy with the greatest opportunity for playing time the soonest.

I guess I differ from you guys on this one.
Moore was productive in the SEC...
Dunedin81 : 7/25/2013 4:21 pm : link
and but for his slow 40 time could have been a top 15 pick. I'm not sure his learning curve, at least in the pass rush, is as steep as some of you think. Plus the only known commodity on that line is JPP. Tuck has a lot of mileage, Kiwi is switching (back) positions, and Tracy hasn't done enough to say for sure that we can count on him.
I'm also in the Cooper Taylor
batman11 : 7/25/2013 4:40 pm : link
camp. I saw him play a lot at UR. The kid is a player,(Think Brad Van Pelt II) if he can stay healthy. ...but that is a big if.
Even if Moore didn't . . . .
TC : 7/25/2013 4:50 pm : link
get many reps, I think he has to be on the active roster, because I don't think he would ever clear waivers.
Moore will be on the 53 man roster.
BillT : 7/25/2013 5:25 pm : link
He's a lock as a 3rd round choice. However, he's much less likely to be on the 45-man gameday roster. The Giants usually dress 4 DE and he's #5 at the moment. Short of injuries at DE he'll likely be inactive.

pjcas18 : 7/25/2013 5:44 pm : link
FWIW has Moore 3rd/4th on the depth chart backing up JPP at RDE.

Tuck is the opposite starter with Kiwi as the backup at LDE.

Who would you have 4th? Tracy? Trattou? Ojomo? Broha

Moore should be able to surpass all them even as a rookie, maybe not week 1, but before too long.

I still think Moore is the rookie with the potential to see the most playing time the soonest. Outside of injuries.
I'm going with Pugh starting at RT by week 6.
logan80 : 7/25/2013 5:48 pm : link
.
I see Tracy as the #4
BillT : 7/25/2013 5:53 pm : link
They'll keep 5 DEs. They activate 4. Someone will be inactive. Tracy is a 3rd year pass rushing specialist and a STer who has gotten some buzz recently. Moore is a rookie with a lot to learn, strength to build and weight to gain. Hey, I could be wrong but it just seems more likely to me that all things being equal Tracy will get the 4th active spot.
I hope you're right Bill
pjcas18 : 7/25/2013 5:58 pm : link
anyone beating Moore out IMO just means more depth.

Etienne Sabino
Stu : 7/25/2013 6:07 pm : link
......
Hey, I think they got a steal with Moore
BillT : 7/25/2013 6:07 pm : link
Guys with his college resume don't usually don't last until the 3rd. But he's got some work to do to be a regular.
Of camp I'll go with
beatrixkiddo : 7/25/2013 8:05 pm : link
Nassib

As for pre-season, I'd go with Hankins.
Rookie, or so.

Da'rel Scott.

Jake Muasau...
Milton : 7/25/2013 9:15 pm : link
...making the 53 man roster would be a nice surprise (unless it's due to a bunch of injuries ahead of him).
Cox or one of the DBs.
Big Blue Blogger : 7/26/2013 9:47 am : link
I think that's where the opportunities will be for a rookie to break through. I could see a young WR impressing too, like Douglas in 2012, and getting cut anyway.

There's too much of a logjam on both lines for anyone to come out of nowhere. Even Damontre Moore could wind up as the 2013 version of Adewale Ojomo - lighting it up against third-stringers in pre-season, and still be a healthy scratch on opening night if JPP and the other vets are ready to go . On the offensive line, I'm not looking for big surprises; I just want Pugh to justify his draft position and young vets like Brewer and Mosley to show they can provide quality depth.
Nassib is going to carve up third string D's..
Davisian : 7/26/2013 10:09 am : link
Then right after Eli's first regular season pick, many, many fuckheads will scream for Nassib..
I hope and pray it's Hankins..
PeterS : 7/26/2013 10:37 am : link
our DT's need a serious upgrade!
I want to see what Michael Cox can do.
Ira : 7/26/2013 10:46 am : link
He played on a team that didn't have the personnel to compete, but he did pretty well. He's a big strong guy who can make a player miss and has decent speed.
