Shaun Rogers?

Milton : 8/2/2013 1:41 pm
Anyone else surprised that Rogers is running with the two's and getting as may reps as he has in sub packages?

Given all the competition at DT and given his age and the fact that he is coming off a season on IR, I really just figured him for insurance against training camp injuries. I didn't think he had a realistic chance to make the final roster. Now I'm starting to wonder.
If he's healthy and motivated
JonC : 8/2/2013 1:43 pm : link
he is still a solid rotational player who can be a force at times.
Why would you think that?
robbieballs2003 : 8/2/2013 1:44 pm : link
It isn't like he had and ACL injury last year where it takes 9 months to recover. You should take the best players into the season. It isn't like he is going to stop Hankins from getting a roster spot.
Shaun is a load
OPBigBlue00 : 8/2/2013 1:44 pm : link
if he is in form. he had clots last year. As long as he is in shape i could see him being in the mix year, certainly will help with our shoddy run defense.
I think they end up keeping
nygiants16 : 8/2/2013 1:45 pm : link
Joseph, Jenkins, Rodgers, Hankins, Kuhn

he was with the #1's when Cullen was out.
I think we'll keep 5
JonC : 8/2/2013 1:45 pm : link
is Kuhn on PUP or practicing?
.
arcarsenal : 8/2/2013 1:46 pm : link
Rodgers is still a very solid DT when he's healthy.
Kuhn is on PUP at the moment
WeatherMan : 8/2/2013 1:47 pm : link
wouldn't surprise me if they carry him into the season on there. Before injury Rogers was expected to have a role last year, having him as a rotational 3/4th DT could be a really big positive for the run D.
I've never felt so sure
Randy in CT : 8/2/2013 1:47 pm : link
that our D-Line was going to be a force as I do this year.
I want to see
AnishPatel : 8/2/2013 1:48 pm : link
what he and Okam, both at 350 lbs, is like next to each other on the DL. That's gotta be a hard front to run against.
few things
GIANTSr01 : 8/2/2013 1:49 pm : link
1) It's early in camp and vets usually start at the top of the depth chart
2) Who's he taking snaps from? LJ and Jenkins are the 1s, and Hankins is getting snaps alongside him. Kuhn is on PUP. Patterson is 30, coming off an injury, and even when healthy isn't the player Rogers is. That leaves Austin who's shown little to nothing so far and journeyman Okam. Those 2 need to earn their snaps.
Kuhn will probably remain on PUP
JonC : 8/2/2013 1:52 pm : link
Okam's a journeyman who's a longshot, Patterson also a longshot, imo.

Fifth DT probably winds up being Austin, with Rodgers the final cut unless they stash Kuhn on IR to keep Rodgers.
I'm not complaining about it
Milton : 8/2/2013 1:58 pm : link
I'm just surprised. He's 34 years old and 350 pounds. He missed all of last year and had a disappointing season with the Saints in 2011.

I feel the same way even with the JPP injury.

It makes sense to PUP Kuhn going into the season. There is a logjam at DT while everyone is healthy.
Rogers
lester : 8/2/2013 2:04 pm : link
take up space, we could use a bulky DT in the rotation.
Randy
Milton : 8/2/2013 2:05 pm : link
The DL certainly appears loaded, but I can't say I'm more confident in this group going into the season than I have been in the past. I'll felt pretty damn good about last year's group when you consider that JPP and Joseph had both shined in year two of their young careers and Osi was coming off his best play-making stretch since 2007. Instead, they laid an egg.

So while I share your enthusiasm for the 2013 DL, I can't say I'm any more enthusiastic than I've been in years past.
Rogers is a good player
Steve in South Jersey : 8/2/2013 2:09 pm : link
if he can stay healthy. If he can make to through traning camp and the preseason without injury then I say keep him. If he starts missing practices and nursing injuries then goodbye.
Didnt i read
oke49 : 8/2/2013 2:17 pm : link
its important to collapse the pocket up the middle against the read option ? if so, he becomes a valuable piece of the puzzle.
Last time Rogers played,
MOOPS : 8/2/2013 2:27 pm : link
he was exhausted at 30 plays per game. I think there's possibly a spot for him on the team, but it comes down to a numbers game and what you could expect from him. I don't see more than 25 plays per game. Is that enough to be active on game days?
the fact that the Giants
Matt in SGS : 8/2/2013 2:30 pm : link
last year took great pains to try to keep him around after the blood clot and wait for a while before IR'ing him, and then to keep tabs on him throughout his recovery and bring him back showed me that the Giants always had bigger plans for him. I think they saw the way teams pushed them around on run defense and rather than rush Hankins into the mix, they wanted to get one more season out of Rogers as that run clogger type in the middle.
Only thing that worries me about the D-line is JPP ....
Manny in CA : 8/2/2013 2:35 pm : link
If he's ready for opening day, everything is rosy.

At DE - I still like Tuck a lot, but I think Kiwi will start over him (with JPP); Tuck, Tracy & Moore backing them up

At DT - Linval & Jenkins start with Rogers, Hankins and Austin back-ups

last year teams averaged 60 ofensive plays a game. Having a healthy Shaun Rogers to be on the field for a 1/3 of them is an asset
If I had to bet, I[d say that Kuhn starts the year on the PUP List
Optimus-NY : 8/2/2013 2:52 pm : link
I'd carry 5 DTs on the opening day 53-man roster. They'd be Joseph, Jenkins, Hankins, Rogers, & Patterson.

Austin gets cut IMO by Patterson if he Austin doesn't show anything to distinguish himself.
Hankins
Steve in South Jersey : 8/2/2013 2:59 pm : link
I think Hankins spending a season with Rogers would do a lot of good for Hankins development. Rogers has a wealth of knowledge and experince is what will be Hankins game.
I don't know if it will pan out -- it might --
Exit 172 : 8/2/2013 3:00 pm : link
but I'd like to see formations during preseason games with Rogers and Hankins in the middle. Especially against opponents' starters.
Steve
Optimus-NY : 8/2/2013 3:00 pm : link
That's a great point.
Rogers
Dragon : 8/2/2013 3:36 pm : link
Has to be a big surprise for all of us but it's still very early to count on a 34 year old rotation guy. He has not done much in the past few years and missed all of last year.
Kuhn on PUP
old man : 8/2/2013 3:56 pm : link
Marvin makes team til MK comes off PUP, unless Austin finally 'gets it' If he doesn't he's gone; if he does, MK may do year on PUP.
Agree that Shaun is Hankins special mentor.
If Rogers can hold up the OL, even in a periodic, 3rd DT kind of pairing rotation, and can really help the team. Solid 2nd and 3rd string DTs will let the DE's and blitzing safeties have lots of fun.
The deeper DT
Semipro Lineman : 8/2/2013 4:00 pm : link
position this year will allow the team to keep the DE's at DE instead of having to spell the DT occasionally. All the "OMG, why is JPP playing tackle" posts will be a thing of the past and that's a blessing.
I agree that they've...
MOOPS : 8/2/2013 4:08 pm : link
figured out that the DEs gotta stay at DE and that will mean we always have 4 DTs active on game days. That wasn't always the case in the past. It's up to Rogers to show he can still handle the load that will be required of him.

Rob_MTL : 8/2/2013 4:16 pm : link
Linval Joseph is an excellent run stuffing DT, but without a quality rotation he got tired last year. Having a fresh L Joseph for a change would be a major improvement.
only room for 9DL
nygirlie : 8/2/2013 4:28 pm : link
it will be a tough choice between Tracy or the 5th DT who is likely to be Patterson or Austin or Kuhn.

Offence is likely to have 26 (3rd QB). So the D will have 9 DB, 6LB, 9DL.
Rogers
AnyoneButPhilly : 8/2/2013 5:35 pm : link
Was an absolute beast in his prime. I remembering him just flattening Eli when he was in Cleveland
I do not think that it is a stretch to think that when it
giantsfour : 8/2/2013 5:38 pm : link
comes down to decide between the 10th DL or Carr that the Giants may want to keep the 10th DL and not Carr.
I feel like
Randy in CT : 8/2/2013 5:55 pm : link
in Joseph, Cullins, Jenkins et al, we might actually have some playmakers in the middle and then with Tuck rejuvenated and healthy and Kiwi back at full time end and add in guys like JPP when he's ready and they just might be quite destructive.

For as good as Osi was against the pass, boy was his shortcoming against the run just glaring. I feel like we don't have that anymore. Inside and out it would seem our guys are solid against the run and pass (in theory) (on paper).
old man - Excelelnt post; what you say makes a lot of sense

You may have changed my mind about Patterson beating out Austin. If Austin turns it on, then they can IR Kuhn after he's eligible to rejoin the team when he's done on the PUP List between weeks 7 and 10. This way they keep 2 young DTs going into 2014.
Rogers had a game against the giants - was it 3 years ago? -
BlueLou : 8/2/2013 7:14 pm : link
playing for Cleveland where he ate Shaun O'Hara alive. There was nothing left of O'Hara but his cleats by the 3rd qtr, as I recall. Snee was like a side dish for Rogers that day too.
There was that game on MNF in Cleveland back in 2008 when
Optimus-NY : 8/2/2013 7:29 pm : link
Rogers planted Eli's shoulder into the turf. I thought Eli was going to miss some time as a result of it too because of how ugly it looked on Instant Replay when it happened.
That Cleveland gane in 2008
mack809f : 8/2/2013 8:44 pm : link
Was one of the worst in recent memory. Al Michaels lauded Eli as the greatest thing since peanut butter but our boy threw 3 picks and Rodgers plus Braylon Edwards ate us up.

I believe the roster spot for Nassib will come from the WR's. I think they will carry five instead of the six they usually carry. I can see 10 DL. Joseph, Jenkins, Hankins, Rogers, Patterson or Austin, JPP, Tuck, Kiwanuka, Moore and Tracy.
Giants' defensive tackles may finally be able to stop the run, but
GeofromNJ : 8/3/2013 10:48 am : link
can they keep up with the Redskins' and Eagles' fast passed option plays? This is what has me worried. These option plays are run on first and second down, not just 3rd.

5 WRs is a possibility. But the Giants always had 6-7 WRs back inthe days when they had 3 QBs.

There are an average of about 60 D snaps per game. So Rogers taking
20-30 would be plenty.
Seriously at this point I want Rodgers on the field
LauderdaleMatty : 8/3/2013 11:37 am : link
for 25 plays a game before I want Austin out there for one. Based upon what we are hearing and seeing now for this line. Rodgers healthy and motivated at 34 would be a major upgrade for the DT rotation.

Right now its Patterson or Austin for that fifth spot IMO if its even there depending on the DTs.
I really want to see
AnishPatel : 8/3/2013 11:40 am : link
Okam and Rogers next to each other on the DL. That's gotta be a sight to see. 2 big guys at 350 lbs clogging up their respective assigned gaps.
You realize Anish,
BlueLou : 8/10/2013 12:52 am : link
that Okam only makes the team if there is something seriously wrong with more than 1 other DT?

game vs. rogers was scary. the only time i remember our o-line looking scared

and during our absolute peak

the very next play after rogers pile-drove eli into the ground, he blasted thru an o'hara/snee double team and slammed right into eli's knees
