“We’re talking about issues that are coming up before the ball is even snapped,” he said. “I mean, we are not even aligned properly and that’s what we’ve got to correct. Those are the struggles you have in every preseason, but at some point you have to look at it and say, ‘OK, this is not going to happen anymore.’”
I read an article several months ago that said that there is a gentlemen's agreement among the GMs not to claim 1st year QBs put on the practice squad. The article said that after year one, all bets are off but as it stood then a team could safely put their QB pick on the practice squad without risking losing him. Of course this is not a rule so there could be one GM willing to take the heat and blow up the agreement.
I can't believe McCants did not get one mention in this thread. If DD was awful, McCants was god awful. He doesn't even get a piece of the guy in front of him when he is on the inside.
Positives:
- Run D looked better...good push up the gut
- Running game showed some life
- Pugh, although I would have liked to see him at RT
Negatives:
- Diehl, he seems to be as much of a drive killer as Killdrive...the first sack he gave up on a play action was horrible and destroyed the drive!
- Deadzone offense, I, and I'm pretty sure over half of BBI, knew that freakin draw was coming on first and goal which resulted in a loss of two or three yards! It's a wasted down IMO when we run that play.
- Hosely, he seems to always be just close enough to make a play but never does
- Lack of containment in front 7...several times the DE and LBs crashed down hard which allowed sizable gains on the outside....not going to be a plus against Bob, Vick, etc.
Looking ahead:
- At the end of the day, this team needs to make it thru preseason healthy
- Have to replace DIehl
- LAck of LB talent will need to be overcome by a stout DLine
- I'm hoping they arent wanting to show what they have in Myers, cuz he's shown nothing
10 penalties, 6 sacks-putrid
Diehl was fucking disgraceful, how the hell do they start the season with him on the O-line?
The tight ends looked absolutely clueless
That receiver hardy was brutal, that pass from eli hit him in the hands, would've been a sure TD
Cox looked real good, hopefully they find a way to implement him into the offense
Offense looked predictable as hell and if this team has the same problem as last year scoring touchdowns they'll be another 9 win/no playoffs team
The tandem of wilson/brown at running back should be solid
Tuck had a nice game and a nice blocked pass
Fluke play on the ross near INT, i trust his veteran instinct out there
I never want to see carr again, his throwing motion and his pocket awareness is beyond atrocious
The nassib pick still makes zero sense to me
We have a serious problem at LB, i see alot of nickel defense this year
God help this defense under fewell again
- Andre Brown and Michael Cox can play. RB's should be ok.
- Shaun Rogers looked good, stood out when I focused on watching the DT's.
- Tuck played well, active.
- Good to see Hakeem out there, he got open and Eli hit him a couple of times. He will be fine.
- Other than the crazy TD, I thought Aaron Ross played ok.
- Hosley is a player.
- Trumane McBride will make the team.
- Beatty has developed into a very good LT. Has a motor, made a nice tackle on a turnover (wished he didn't, it's preseason and he doesn't need to hurt himself). Pugh looked solid at LT
- Our kicking game is strong. Brown is an upgrade over Tynes. Weatherford is terrific.
- I thought Carr was ok when not taking a hit. With the starters, I think he's a servicable #2. We'll see what Painter does next week. Season is over if Eli goes down regardless of who the #2 is.
Con's
- Diehl, why isn't Pugh getting snaps at RT?
- Wilson should be better than he is, doesn't seem to follow his blocks well.
- Yes, Eli was rushed. But, he should have hit a few more throws. A few of those bad ones are on him.
- Our LB's are not good.
- When Cruz went down, it was noticable. Wasn't impressed with Murphy.
- Did Ruben Randle play?
- JPP missing the pre-season. We really need him to come back healthy. Our only true impact player on defense.
Yea randle played, had a couple of nice catches. Weatherford is in mid season form, his punts were great. Agreed about eli, some of those throws are on him, he made a few bad ones.
The one TD was a pick that fluked. Lets not write off the defense based on this. At full strength, over the course of a game, the depth on our D line will yield plenty of pressure and that's where our strength will be. Patience.
Hankins got bullied out there. Needs the weight room or something. Did not hear (and would like to) anything about Moore, Snee, Ross, Kiwanuka, Brewer, Frederick last night. Agree that the TEs looked lost and ineffective.
back to watch 7 pm start. No picture. came on in second quarter. Wilson made a nice play on catch. Nicks got a twenty yarder. Cox made good kick return. No picture when I returned from kitchen.Getting my info from this discussion thread.Lot of good posts.
that was an everything that can go wrong went wrong kind of game Â
Both TDs against were fluky -- the Ross play doesn't happen again 1 in 100 times. The Hosley touchdown was an unreal throw where the receivers second foot was within a half inch of being out of bounds.
A series of big 15 yard penalties (including on the coach) most of which were for silly fouls.
The biggest thing that is obvious to everyone is that DD can't (pass) block anymore. Receivers can't get uncovered if you don't give the QB anytime. Hopefully, the loyalty to DD is fleeting. Otherwise it is going to be a long year.
I took mrs gidiefor to the game with me and she keep asking me what was wrong
My observations:
The Colts don't have a good run game and playing against them I don't think our run defense was all that good - the Colts kept hammering away at our gut and marching down the field - everyone was happy that they stopped the runner - but they kept giving up yardage - 3 to 7 yards a pop - they also kept failing to stop the colts on third down - it was maddening
On offense - we do not look strong in the power running game at all! Wilson showed good burst and made a few plays but he looked mediocre running into the line. Brown looked better up the gut but not great - the few plays he made were power sweep runs - and not all of them worked - the first 4down play was pathetic - the second one worked.
Eli had pressure in his face all night - and it looked at a certain point that the offense was just lackluster and not up to the game. Deihl was embarrassing - he was playing with a cast on his hand and he looked embarrassed and red faced constantly. He nearly got Eli killed.
Randle looked good - Wilson whiffed on a block that had Eli running for his life.
Hosely looked Awful to me and Luck was picking on him all night.
I thought Nassib showed good poise again - and that he made a few nice plays- to me he looks a heck of a lot better out there than Carr. Carr is not a great QB for as long as he has been playing and looks wooden out there and has a lot of nervous energy. Whatever - we are fucked when ELi packs it in or is out of the game - why bother keeping an average QB like Carr or Painter - give Nassib the roster spot in my opinion and let the kid learn. Do not waste a roster spot on keeping 3 qbs! We need all the help we can get everywhere that is not a skill position - Oline, DLine, Secondary, LBs -
Tuck played well last night - that was a bright spot - Connor played okay - and so did Williams. Josh Brown is a great addition to the team - he's got a real strong leg. In practice he was hitting 60 yd field goals. He kicks deep on kickoffs consistently, and he kept the runbacks from happening with his boomers. He also made the field goals.
Without Baas in there the Oline is torrid. I just don't get how the defense as a unit wouldn't be totally embarrassed with the way they played the run last night.
We've been told that Murphy was signed because he's fast and can stretch the defense. Not one deep ball to Murphy through the first two games. Is Gilbride saving this for the regular season?
I know he's only been playing against backups but its not really fair to use that against him when he hasn't even been given the chance to go against the starters because they have 50 million defensive linemen on the roster.
When he's on the field, you know it. He led the team in sacks last preseason and could very well do it again this preseason. Scrubs or not, that has to count for something.
It would be a shame to see him go some place else and become a productive player right around the time where Tuck and Kiwi are entering the last leg of their careers as productive starters.
I know Tracy is the favorite and he's had a good camp (all 17 practices) and he has a cute little nickname but he hasn't had nearly the same impact or presence that Ojomo has.
They picked this guy up off the street. Every once in a while you get lucky with these street FA's and when you do, you should hold onto them.
The bomb to cruz happened because Murphy was double-covered. Â
kids anyway. When Tuck was sucking wind and injured and JPP played the whole season on a bad back, how good were the coaches at mixing in the kids last year?
They've got some nice-looking groceries but the head chef just wants mac and cheese every night.
criticism ie confusion out there on the line and in the field - on paper this should be a better team than last year - and so far they look the same as last year.
To Tommy Coughlin - I hope to god this is not the way we will look this year and that this is just preseason shakeout - something has to be done to improve the defensive game performance for the season or we will all be screaming:
He's a phenomenal athlete, and when he gets some room he can explode, but his ability to read blocks and sniff out a hole are terrible. Compare that to Andre Brown. Hell, compare that to Cox last night - both of those guys can find a crease somewhere else when the hole's not there. Right now, Wilson doesn't do that and Brown clearly should start with Wilson as the changeup back.
And my other favorite turkey, Hosley, flat out fucking sucks.
and Ross have the same problem, namely playing the ball in the air. They are in position, but routinely mistime jumps, etc. You also have to remember that Luck made some incredible throws. Most QBs wouldn't have even attempted that throw to Hilton in the back of the end zone.
Wilson CAN learn to do so, but he's not there yet. I know everyone likes to blame the line or the playcalling for his inconsistency, but most of it is on him.
Wilson is probably used to being able to use his speed from college. He's going to have to learn patience. Cox had no choice but to be patient in college because his offensive line was abysmal lol
It's weird how some runners have that ability at a young age Â
I watched a highlight last night, I can't remember what team or RB, but he had nice screen in front of him and LB pursuit behind him. All he did was run past his blocks and up a lineman's back. Probably could've convoy'd it for a big play but he just took himself out of a good play with impatience.
To this day, that game Tiki played against the Raiders his last year when he picked his way through a minefield of blockers, I've never seen a guy do it better. ANd he was probably going 75% there.
it just was awful last year. It's still not great, but man...even when he gets hit, it's got to be a direct hit to bring him down. Some of his failed runs were terrible play calls/blocking. Like that first down draw. *yawn* any of us could have predicted that - and Kildrive is surprised it's -3 yards because...
Cox looks good, yes, but again, against scrubs. Not his fault, but it is what it is. I do think Scott needs to start considering his future soon. Cox is our third best running back, period. An excellent find.
I wonder (still) if Hosley's biggest problem is his height. He can cover a guy well but he literally can't afford any mistakes against a WR if that WR is 6+ inches taller.
Is he a "Player"? Absolutely. A career backup/nickel, and special teamer, though.
on the field last night has not even been mentioned yet on this thread-S David Caldwell. Special teams, deep coverage, and especially coming up to make tackles on running plays, these guy was impressive throughout.
The skills Cox is showing seems like they'd translate well Â
based on last night. Some guys just don't ever have that knack though. Llike Hershel they just cannot run instinctively. Wilson may be like Hershel but he has improved from last year.
BUT, the player IMO that already looks good against 2d team players is Trattou. I'd like to see Trattou against 1st team opposing defenses.
IMO Shaun Rogers did not look good but Patterson has a VERY QUICK 1ST STEP and looked very good.
WOW !
I can't believe McCants did not get one mention in this thread. If DD was awful, McCants was god awful. He doesn't even get a piece of the guy in front of him when he is on the inside.
I'm not sure any team would do that.
- Run D looked better...good push up the gut
- Running game showed some life
- Pugh, although I would have liked to see him at RT
Negatives:

Pass defense. Luck completed 9 of his last 10 throws. Of course, when you play 10 yards off the receiver that 9 yard hitch is open all day.
Red (Green, whatever) Zone offense. Putrid. Field goals when you get inside the 10 don't cut it.
Lack of containment of the QB. So, you got a nice pass rush on the blitz? Then, Luck scrambles looking like Steve Young.
Pretty disappointing.
Kiwanuka looked strong out there.

Remember, they're playing with replacements now.
It's Boothe, Cordle, Mosely and Pascoe. THat's not what it's supposed to be.

How else can you explain how superb athletes look so utterly defenseless, literally, on so many 3rd downs.
They've got some nice-looking groceries but the head chef just wants mac and cheese every night.
To Tommy Coughlin - I hope to god this is not the way we will look this year and that this is just preseason shakeout - something has to be done to improve the defensive game performance for the season or we will all be screaming:
Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!!!!
It's a shame the game where the #1's play the most is going to vs. the Jets train wreck. I'd like it to have been a better team.
Pats game will be a better test, "if" the #1's play more than 1-2 series.
Just like he saved the Wilson wheel route for the last game of the season against Philly when the season was over...
