That was not anywhere near as bad as it looked.

TC gave up an easy 3 points to work on short yardage on the first drive. Hardy dropped a pass at the 3 yard line that Cruz catches on the second drive.

The Ross INT/TD. Will never happen again. We could have just as easily been ahead at half.

I was just happy to see Big Blue on the field and nobody seriously hurt.

Agreed

That the score was not a good indication of what transpired, especially in that first half. Having said that, it feels like this same thing happened in previous years that has cost us games. Offense moved the ball very well, only to settle for FG's. Defense let up a big play (albeit very lucky) and were sitting there with another loss. Glad this was only a preseason game, but we NEED to get the Red Zone offense shored up or it will be our downfall.
The red zone offense is ominous.
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/19/2013 9:13 am : link
If it were just preseason, you could play it off.

They've played that way in real games too.

Red Zone offense is awful. The O-Line was also unimpressive last night. I don't think this is an indication of what is to come, but it was ugly. The Colts D should not have kept our O out of the endzone for a half.

TTH nailed it

Last night's ho hum performance is only meaningful to the extent that we have seen it before, too many times, in fact... it is the reason we miss the PO's more often than we make it.

Oh yes it will

Remember the "magical" touchdown Bob3 had against the Giants last year?
Regardless of whether..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/19/2013 9:19 am : link
or not it was bad, I hope TC uses it to motivate the troops and tell them they need to step it up.

Parcells was a master at using preseason to make examples. We need some examples right now.

the pass to Hardy wouldnt have gotten a TD or even a first down. Have to wonder why he throws it.

Could you give names to any of those examples?
I have a question....could be dumb....but is Eric Winston still a FA

and would it behoove us to give him a call?

If available, he could man RT and let Booth or Pugh move to LG and Boothe to C.

remember that Pre-Season is also about seeing how things work. Sometimes, they run a certain play rather than the best possible play to see how it works out. I also think the offense really geared toward getting Nicks involved. The Colts realized this and took him away making it look ineffective.

Kiwanuka was the best player on our team last night, IMO, though Wilson also looked very good.

Winston signed with the Cardinals.

not necessarily any cuts. Parcells wouldn't "throw" preseason games, but if the team lost, he'd use it to motivate them as he knew he had a bunch of guys who hated being in camp to start with.

I tend to want two things out of preseason:

1) No injuries
2) Get timing and things like that down, but don't worry about running anything exotic that will be a staple later.

For the most part, TC has gotten the second part frequently in his tenure, and so far (fingers crossed) that MAJOR injury of year's past has been avoided.
Maybe, but from last year to this year, we

Need to do better. The same issues exist, trouble scoring in the red zone, and trouble keeping teams out of the end zone when they get in the red zone.

Our run defense looks like they'll be much improved, but As of right now, I have no reason to believe Brandon Myers is an upgrade over Bennett. And can Nicks and Tuck return to form?
Truth be told...

I think Ross has looked pretty good.
Initially I was
OPBigBlue00 : 8/19/2013 9:32 am : link
very disappointed in the effort last night. But it is pre season and they are trying out different plays and personnel. I do wish they would stop with that shotgun run on in the endzone.
40 years ago in 1973 the Giants were 6-0 in the pre season
nomad1986 : 8/19/2013 9:33 am : link
They won 2 regular season games that year. Ever since then I've just wanted these meaningless games to be over without key players getting hurt.

This up coming game is the worst football week of the year. This game cost Phil Simms a spot in the Hall of Fame and cost Jason Sehorn and Terrell Thomas their careers.

The things that concerned me last night
nomad1986 : 8/19/2013 9:35 am : link
were losing Cruz and Baas but even worse is the inability to coach up any of the young OL to start. Every year the Giants back up OL's look like a bad high school team.

The most boring giants game I have ever watched. Their biggest play was cox on the 28 yd screen. TC looked very frustrated. Usually you notice a big play from someone. For example... Cruz busting on the scene, Rodney Hampton running for 80+ yds , Shockey steam rolling someone.
So far boring, sloppy play. Giants offense should not be getting shut down.
Thanks, Riggies!
GiantBlue : 8/19/2013 9:38 am : link
It will be interesting to see what we do with our first team OL vs. the Jets.
I don't get the red zone...
Dunedin81 : 8/19/2013 9:39 am : link
under Eli (and Gilbride) we have never been very good there, despite having a franchise QB, a running game that at times over that span has been good, good TE play year in and year out, and some very good receivers. It's not the end of the world, but if we could have a decent success rate just once it'd be nice.
I agree with the OP
nicky43 : 8/19/2013 9:39 am : link
Also, there are just some games where a lot of crazy things happen that can go your way or against you. They are not exactly crazy things but just some combinations of events within a play that determine it's result. I call this stuff THE WAY THE BALL BOUNCES.

Last night's game was one of those games where the ball just kept bouncing away from us all night long. Baas going out early. Cruz going out. The interception/TD. A few other blown interceptions Luck tried to hand us, and a few key players not haviong one of their better games. It was just a bunch of things that added up to spell we lose.

That said, we still have a lot of work to do and I'm about as mad as TC is about the Players Association contract just about eliminating preseason practices. For the money they make, that's ridiculous.
I really hope Nicks is still just shaking off the rust...
Matt G : 8/19/2013 9:39 am : link
Because he looked sluggish... Much the like the guy who played most of last season hobbled... I know that he's a tough guy, but I would rather sit him until healthy and use Randle in his place...

Tough to see Nicks like this as he was really ascending into one of the very best WRs in the NFL... As great as he was in the 2011 run, I thought the game that he suffered the injury against TB might have been his best in a Giant uniform... Aqib Talib was mugging him constantly and still couldn't do anything to stop him...
not as bad as it looked?
gidiefor : Mod : 8/19/2013 9:42 am : link
why was I so friggen grim - maybe it was the books behind me with their running idiotic comments - but I can;t stand watching other teams run up and down the field against us - and watching us not stop drives on third down

but that's just me
It's the pre-season
Jerry in DC : 8/19/2013 9:42 am : link
It's completely 100% meaningless. Literally the only thing that matters is injuries. I find it somewhat remarkable that people even watch these games. I suppose it's a testament to enthusiasm and dedication as fans. These games will tell you nothing about how the team will do this year.
books = mooks

yeah - okay - I believe that - but I've seen last night's game before in the regular season and I haven't liked seeing it then either
the positivies for me were
UConn4523 : 8/19/2013 9:51 am : link
Wilson hitting holes and showing vision with burst
Nicks/Randle made some nice catches
Blitz pick up from Wilson and Brown
Left side of the O-Line
D-Line without JPP was solid. Should only get better.
CB's tackled very well (Hosley made a great open field tackle on a screen to Wayne).

Still not sure why we play 5 yards off the LOW against their WR's though.
The score is the last thing I care about in a preseason game
Motley Blue : 8/19/2013 9:51 am : link
There were too many things I saw that I didn't like for me to draw any excitement from the game.

Injuries to Baas & Cruz

Oline played like shit as a unit. Some guys did fine individually, but as a unit, nothing but failure.

Nicks still looks like he has a ways to go to reach %100

Redzone production was non existent
not sure how you drew that conclusion on Nicks
UConn4523 : 8/19/2013 9:53 am : link
his 2nd catch was all YAC and got separation. He's most likely not going all out since its preseason. Nothing he did yesterday suggested he isn't at, or close to, 100%.
I thought
NJGiantFan84 : 8/19/2013 9:55 am : link
nicks looked fine. He had 2 catches each for 20+ yards.

Were under a little bit of pressure to perform well last night after Irsay threw his little tantrum. It's conceivable that this led to a more aggressive game plan. The Giants coaches will know for sure.

My only problem with last night was the play of David Diehl - he looks like he's done.

Nicks to me...
BillKo : 8/19/2013 10:39 am : link
looked like he was having trouble accelerating...but we'll see.
The oline was okay

Diehl was crap.
Last night looked like the second half of last year
Rick in Dallas : 8/19/2013 12:49 pm : link
I know it's only preseason games but it looked like a repeat of last year. We cannot defend the middle of the field in pass coverage with these LB's. RB's and TE's will be open all game against this group. I still worry about the OL dominating the LOS in the run game.We are going to have to outscore our opponents becuase of our defense which puts alot of pressure on the offense.
Nicky, don't forget the FG that hit the upright.....
