Just got an alert. Will try to get a link.

Baas at G won't (and shouldn't) be an option.
He's still not deserving of a roster spot
Kyle : 8/20/2013 12:50 pm : link
.
I would like to see what Moseley can do as well.
Curtis in VA : 8/20/2013 12:51 pm : link
Diehl at Guard or anywhere on the starting OL doesn't seem like a good idea, but at least he's being moved from the Tackle position so hopefully this is only temporary.

Well Pugh may have a hard time at first
wgenesis123 : 8/20/2013 12:52 pm : link
but I would think he will still be an improvement at RT. The bar wasn't exactly set to high. As to when Baas returns what will happen. I think Diehl will get his job back at RT. He got it back last year when he came back from injury, don't see any reason to think the coaches will do differant.
Pugh is still a question at RT.
chops : 8/20/2013 12:53 pm : link
He must prove he is capable and this is his chance.

On the otherhand, DD had a few bad plays;on the whole he wasn't bad.
told ya.
Victor in CT : 8/20/2013 12:53 pm : link
Boothe to C, Pugh to RT, Deihl or Moseley to LG
Victor in CT : 8:06 am
May as well make Boothe the C now. Baas is always injured. They can't rely on him returning and staying healthy.

I agree with those saying that maybe Moseley should get a look at LG.

"On the whole he wasn't bad"

He was awful.
Beez: Baas was a huge disappointment at guard for the 49ers.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/20/2013 12:54 pm : link
Makes no sense to swap him and Boothe. Baas is a better center. Boothe is a better guard.

BillT: If Baas were expected to miss months rather than weeks, Mosley-->LG would be in the mix, especially if Diehl struggles against the Jets. For this brief absence, I think they just want a quick veteran Band-Aid. When Baas returns, Diehl goes to the bench - unless Pugh washes out completely - and Boothe goes back to LG. Mosley will continue to work his way up the depth chart. I think he's a live candidate to replace Boothe eventually, but not as part of this short-term reshuffle.
I guess Coughlin & Gilbride finally got around to
Motley Blue : 8/20/2013 12:54 pm : link
reading BBI?
while I think Pugh is going to be a solid player long term...
BillKo : 8/20/2013 12:54 pm : link
I'm worried about him going up against Ware for his very first assigment........ouch.

You know the Pokes will try to exploit that.
nygirlie: Backup center the next few weeks might be Cordle...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/20/2013 12:58 pm : link
...or Goodin, or somebody else. Point is, we now know that Cordle isn't really the #2 center. He's the #3 center on a team that might only have room for two, once those two are healthy.
I don't
dorgan : 8/20/2013 12:58 pm : link
think Dave Diehl is a very good guard these days, but I'm not sure there's a better answer on the roster.

Boothe's shotgun snaps are an adventure waiting to happen and Pugh looks promising, but is raw and a little weaker than I'd like.
Not an ideal situation.

I believe that this
Randy in CT : 8/20/2013 12:58 pm : link
is just another step for Diehl. And by the start of the season he will be a back up.
When Snee gets back
BigBlueDownTheShore : 8/20/2013 12:59 pm : link
is Diehl on the bench?

I think the starting O-line should be:

Beatty
Snee
Bass (when he gets healthy) Boothe for now
Brewer
Pugh
Sounds like the Giants are working Diehl
ZogZerg : 8/20/2013 12:59 pm : link
out of the line-up with this move.
BBB
BillT : 8/20/2013 1:00 pm : link
Yeah, I'd agree. With Baas' return in 3,4,5 weeks DD becomes a stopgap. Just too bad Mosley lost last year. He'd be a starter this year otherwise
finally
miley42289 : 8/20/2013 1:00 pm : link
I was just waiting to read a thread about this sometime soon.

I'd put Brewer ahead of Diehl, btw.

Diehl should be loved by Giants fans. Not for his play the last couple of years of course. But if you feel the need to go attack mode, attack the coaches who continued to trot him out there.

Diehl should no longer be a starter, but he's the shit.
BBDTS
BillT : 8/20/2013 1:01 pm : link
They're not switching Snee to LG. He's the RG period.

JonC : 8/20/2013 1:01 pm : link
Great minds! Let's hope this is the beginning of gracefully moving forward with some youth on the OL.

General questions :

Has Mosley gotten any reps at LG? Boothe's a UFA after this season, iirc.

Is Snee's cap hit massive again next season? Sportrac and the like are blocked at work for me.
Snee's cap hit goes down $2 million next year.
GiantFilthy : 8/20/2013 1:03 pm : link
It's still at $9,000,000 though.

What does it take for Coughlin to let go of Diehl? You would think Diehl is married to his daughter.
Filthy, you're absolutely right
David in LA : 8/20/2013 1:05 pm : link
As fans, all we can really ask out of the players is that they give us maximum effort. Diehl worked his ass off, worked his way up the depth chart, and fended off a few guys once he became a starter. It's more of an indictment on the coaches that he continues to get meaningful snaps. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Coughlin too, but every coach has his warts. Even Parcells had his flaws.
Do not decline
Headhunter : 8/20/2013 1:05 pm : link
while wearing a Giant uniform. It will get ugly
It's always possible that the other options are worse in practice?
GiantFilthy : 8/20/2013 1:06 pm : link
It's possible...
DD
Ron From NYC : 8/20/2013 1:07 pm : link
When Baas returns, he's the 1st back-up at LG and RT. Pugh stays unless he is totally destroyed in the final two preseason games.
Snee
JonC : 8/20/2013 1:08 pm : link
$9M is still a monster cap hit for an OG.

If he returns to health, I'd look to rework his deal with some new money and reduce that cap hit. Mosley at LG, and see if Capers continues to grow, as well as Brewer, and Herman.
Yeah realized I
BigBlueDownTheShore : 8/20/2013 1:09 pm : link
switched the guards on accident.
$9m hurts for Snee,
GiantFilthy : 8/20/2013 1:11 pm : link
especially when we have two years of Baas at $8 plus in 2014, 2015.
pugh is used to facing tough pash rushers
CGiants07 : 8/20/2013 1:12 pm : link
as he was the starting Left tackle at Syracuse so I think he will be ok
it doesn't matter who the right tackle is vs dallas
CGiants07 : 8/20/2013 1:13 pm : link
as we will have a tight end planted over there the entire game likely robinson or pascoe
.
arcarsenal : 8/20/2013 1:15 pm : link
He'll get help from Brown/Wilson as well.
two more big cap hits for Baas?
JonC : 8/20/2013 1:16 pm : link
Shit, I thought it was one more. Can't rework him, but Snee is an option, if healthy.
I'm pretty sure it goes through '15.
GiantFilthy : 8/20/2013 1:18 pm : link
Hope you are right though.

Checking.......
I think Baas can be cut after this year
BillT : 8/20/2013 1:18 pm : link
with a small cap savings and a dead money hit.
:( :( :(
GiantFilthy : 8/20/2013 1:19 pm : link
2014 $8,225,000
2015 $8,475,000
Pugh is used to blocking DaMonster all preseason
Blueballz : 8/20/2013 1:19 pm : link
The rest of the NFL should be a cakewalk for him.

The future of this OLINE is
andrew_nyg : 8/20/2013 1:21 pm : link
LT LG C RG RT
Beatty Brewer ? Mosley Pugh

Why not just rip off the band-aid now and do THAT.

Snee can play Center, so plug him in until Baas gets back, and then use Snee as a back-up utility guy.

Center should be a 1st day priority in next years draft.
Reese has had an almost impeccable track record
David in LA : 8/20/2013 1:22 pm : link
in making sound decisions. Even the ones that might not have panned out, you could understand the rationalization. Constantly restructuring Baas was always a head scratcher. I get why we overpaid to sign him in the 1st place, and that we are up against the cap when we asked him to restructure. I just hope we don't end up losing JPP or Linval on the account of Baas' cap hit in the next couple years.
To those claiming they rewatched the game....
Torrag : 8/20/2013 1:23 pm : link
...focused on DD and thought he wasn't awful. They slanted the protections his way after several early whiffs. He stank. Just awful.

I appreciate his contributions but at this stage the sooner he retires the better. He's looked bad at OG in recent stints there. That ship has sailed. He's an OT. Unfortunately at this point he's one of the worst in football.
Good
B in ALB : 8/20/2013 1:23 pm : link
Now we can move on to more pressing matters.

Like hoping that the 4th string Colts QB gets cut because Pam Oliver's face ran into one of his passes before the game Sunday night.
Probably looking at one more season of Baas
JonC : 8/20/2013 1:23 pm : link
.
Baas' 2014 salary will probably be negotiated down
cosmicj : 8/20/2013 1:29 pm : link
in the off-season.
Diehl is actually the longest-tenured Giant
dpinzow : 8/20/2013 1:33 pm : link
but it was finally time to place him on the bench. He was a solid player for most of his time here until he got old starting in 2011

I can't see the Giants cutting Baas next year because the cap savings isn't significant, so we'll probably hold onto him for one more season
Currently...
rptl530 : 8/20/2013 1:33 pm : link
if you cut Baas after 2014 it's still $6.45m in DEAD money and only a "savings" of $1.775m

An absolutely mind-numbing restructure. Can't believe JR did that.
how about just NO
Neverend : 8/20/2013 1:36 pm : link
Diehl period! He might've been worse at guard in 2011 than he was at tackle in 2011. maybe the team played so well he just blended in at left tackle. Did a decent job against demarcus ware even though he looked like shit in the second of half of the nfc championship game while also struggling in the superbowl
I
AcidTest : 8/20/2013 1:48 pm : link
think, I hope, Coughlin is beginning to understand that Diehl is done. Pugh is a rookie who has missed most of camp, but is named the incumbent starter at RT over Diehl after only one preseason game.

JonC : 8/20/2013 1:56 pm : link
You eat that hit if you cut him before the '14 season. That's why I believe he'll be here for next season.
