Cox - How did this guy slip through the cracks during the

draft? Based on his pro day numbers he should have been at worst a mid round pick. BP 24 - That is two more than Pugh who has short arms. Vertical - 41 matches David Wilson. His 3 cone drill of 6.87 beats Wilson's of 7.09. Did he have some off the field issues or was it the lack of production that hurt him?

what wolverine describes
JonC : 8/23/2013 1:10 pm : link
is what happens to high school studs at D1 schools more often than not. Most don't standout, many washout. They might have had the physical gifts for the NFL, but not the mental gifts or the spirit/courage/heart.
Thanks Wolverine77. Interesting stuff.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/23/2013 1:13 pm : link
Wasn't Michigan's offense basically Robinson left, Robinson right, Robinson up the middle? Couldn't have been a great situation even for the RBs who got to play.

arcarsenal : 8/23/2013 1:14 pm : link
He barely carried the ball at UMich but it's not like he wasn't productive when he did. He averaged over 8 YPC in 2009 and over 9 YPC in 2010. Again.. the sample is very small ( less than 20 carries).. but it certainly seems like he made the most of it.
hopefully he takes over for DaRel Scott

Cox was recruited before Denard
wolverine77 : 8/23/2013 1:17 pm : link
for one. It also was that way because they didn't have a running back to handle the load, and Denard's gifts were his running far, far more than his throwing.

It was a bad fit for sure, but what is stunning is that Cox wasn't even a guy who played specials. There is no reason a guy with his size/speed who wasn't playing wouldn't be on any specials, but he wasn't. He also was further up the depth chart in the beginning of his career and then fell off, which is a little weird.

Best decision he ever made was leaving to go to Umass. I believe he got his degree at michigan, so more power to him for taking advantage of a free education and utilizing the transfer rule to get some playing time. He would not have made the nfl had he stayed at michigan, so good for him for making a great decision.
He definitely
Doomster : 8/23/2013 1:19 pm : link
should move ahead of Scott and Torrain as the #3 back....but if that happens, we would have 3 backs with very little experience....that is a big gamble....
His YPC are inflated because
wolverine77 : 8/23/2013 1:19 pm : link
of one game against Delware state, who was the worst team michigan has played in at least a decade. A shit michigan team put up 63 aganst them and Cox averaged 8 yards a carry, which included a 57 yard run.

I'm looking for Amanda Huginkiss
I think he sat the first three years at college
steve in ky : 8/23/2013 1:34 pm : link
Then transferred to another school and really only played his senior year. Not much to go on for a team to risk a high pick.
Doom..
BillKo : 8/23/2013 1:43 pm : link
at this point, I'd have to say Andre Brown is experienced.....at least he certainly plays like it. And, he's been in the NFL for four/five years....albeit on practice squads mostly.
.
arcarsenal : 8/23/2013 1:57 pm : link
Even if the YPC is inflated.. I think if he was able to break 2 really big runs in under 20 carries, that's still a big positive.
An article I read said that he is just a phenomenal athlete
Peter from CT : 8/23/2013 2:07 pm : link
Why Michigan wasn't able to see that, take advantage of that is a mystery. Kid was a great hockey player who started on football late.
A running back

No offense here dude, but pro day numbers? That is simply to confirm what people have on tape or see someone up close, that's not a way to get noticed if you haven't produced a damn thing. Chances are his pro day numbers got people to pay attention again but there is no way in hell you draft based on those.

If you think teams simply go to pro days, use those measurements and draft you have a tremendous amount to learn about player evaluation.
In the past we have seen players rise and fall based off their

workout numbers.
Mike Cox could definitely handle a load

I like Cox, but I would also like a veteran like Jacobs as our 4th guy: D-Wil, AB, Cox and Jacobs would be solid.

The OP really asks the wrong question IMO, about a guy who's
BlueLou : 8/23/2013 3:54 pm : link
college career was a big NADA. The question that begs to be asked is how did the Giants' scouts in the area see the potential in Cox and convince the FO to spend a draft pick on him?

So far it appears they did their jobs very well, cause Cox looks like a playa.

Thanks for the inside dope from his U Mich days too, Wolverine.
JonC - I now you are often the more level voice of reason,
BlueLou : 8/23/2013 3:56 pm : link
but I see a lot to like from Cox so far in his few carries and pass receptions. An awful lot.

Lou, I agree

I think Cox is the true definition of sleeper. He'll probably get very few carries, but there's a lot to be encouraged by. He seems to have size, speed, and most of all, he's an instinctive runner.
This Cox sure has great measurables
Optimus-NY : 8/23/2013 4:25 pm : link
Do any of you guys like Cox?
Optimus
LawrenceTaylor56 : 8/23/2013 4:26 pm : link
Cox will give you 6 inches when you need a yard.
Dave I think you hit a key point

I like the balance he's shown so far (particularly compared to Scott) but also little details like how he picks up his feet to avoid "trash" on the field.

of 'Mike Cox' jokes Michael Cox has heard.... his production so far has been a great surprise. This is why I love pre-season, watching guys who you have no expectations of show flash, ala Cruz.

JonC : 8/24/2013 8:47 am : link
He's shown more than Scott has in his NYG tenure, and he runs with more power than Brown. Runs with power, better vision, decisive, has punishing size. Probably has enough talent to have been drafted, but posters tend to get enamored with UDFAs and overrate in reaction.
I forget
bc4life : 8/24/2013 9:39 am : link
How much time has he had playing with the ones? The reaction time of starting defenders can make a big difference re: how he performs.

Does hustle on specials.

I think he makes the team, at any rate. I am not sure I agree with JonC that he runs with more power than Brown. Not saying I disagree - just think jury may be out due to not enough data to compare.
An easy tool for judging power is
JonC : 8/24/2013 9:43 am : link
the demonstrated ability to break tackles, Cox breaks a ton, Brown is more of an elusive runner. I've seen Brown go down after initial contact much more often that Cox, to this point.
Certainly, the sample size to compare is small
JonC : 8/24/2013 9:48 am : link
but I've noticed less physicality from Brown this year, perhaps he turns it up once the bullets fly for real.
Nice pick.
Mike fr Warwick : 8/24/2013 11:00 am : link
My opinion 3rd down back/returner with a possibility of being Brown's replacement down the line. I said possible as I like the way the Giants handle and develop their backs.
It will be nice if Cox turns out to be

Doomster : 8/24/2013 12:09 pm : link
The guy has made plays....he seems to have good vision of the field, and runs to daylight....Sean Bennett was a one play wonder.....I think we get to see a lot of Cox(control yourself!) on the field in the next two games....
