List of Jerry Reese player trades: could we see another?

Optimus-NY : 8/24/2013 9:20 am
Here's a list of the trades Jerry Reese has made for players in his time here as GM starting in 2007 (please correct me if I'm wrong):

1. Early March 2007 - Giants acquire RB Reuben Droughns from Cleveland in exchange for WR tim Carter (SOURCE HERE).

2. Late May 2007 - Giants acquire K Lawrence Tynes from Kansas City for a 2008 7th round pick. (SOURCE HERE).

3. Sept. 1, 2007 - Giants trade RB Ryan Grant to GB for a 6th round pick in the 2008 draft. (SOURCE HERE).

4. Late July 2008 - Giants trade TE Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans for 2nd and 5th round draft picks in the 2009 draft. (SOURCE HERE)

5. Sept. 3, 2010 - Giants trade 5th and 7th round draft picks in the 2011 draft to the Vikings for backup QB Sage Rosenfels & RB/KR Darius Reynaud - (SOURCE HERE).

6. April 12, 2012 - Giants trade 5th round draft pick in the 2012 draft to Cincinnati for OLB Keith Rivers. (SOURCE HERE)

.
.
.

That's almost a player trade per year if you do the math. It'll be interesting to see what develops this year. Out of these 6 trades above, 2 have been of the "dump off" variety (The Shockey trade and the Grant trade). One was a player for player deal (Droughns for Mr. Dominate himself, Tim Carter). The other 3 were draft picks for players.

Two of these six trades occurred around the final cut-down date (the Grant deal and the Rosenfels/Reynaud deal). The Giants could very well be in a situation to deal off a young player like DEs Justin Trattou and/or Adrian Tracy again this year like they did Grant to Green Bay in Sept. of 2007. They're young and can be controlled by the team that trades for them both this year, as well as next year.

The advantage of trading for a young player before he hits the waiver wire is that you don't have to compete with teams that are ahead of you on the waiver wire. TE Larry Donnell could also fit into this category for a good team that is desperate for TE help, like New England for instance.

The reason I didn't include veterans who are on the chopping block like DT Mike Patterson who has 4 or more accrued years of experience (as per Article 29, Section 1 of the CBA covering Waivers and Release) is because they aren't subject to the waiver process, and are free agents as soon as they're released. It'd be wasteful for a team to trade for that kind of player in most instances, unless they are truly desperate to get him.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants traded a young player on the fringe in an area of strength like Trattou and/or Tracy to a team that has an area of strength that is an area of weakness for the Giants (i.e., 4th Running Back, Backup OT, Backup LB. These kinds of trades are beneficial to both teams in that the players in question help to adjust the balance of rosters, and also helps to avoid competing on the waiver wire for these players in what accounts to a feeding frenzy by every team in the league.

Keep your eyes open for these kinds of deals again this year by the Giants and other teams as well. The Eagles already made a player for player trade with Pittsburgh. Trades like this are most likely to occur towards the end of preseason as we approach the Final Cut-down date of August 31st a week from today (the cut-down to 75 is in 3 days on August 27th). As you watch preseason games, look around the league outside of teams in the NFC East for teams who play a 4-3 defense, and who have a dearth of talent and depth at DE who also happen to have depth at RB. They would be ideal trading partners with the Giants. I wouldn't be surprised if we see something like this go down by this time next week. Discuss.

good and comprehensive post, as usual. Well thought out.

I think Austin is most likely to be traded if the Giants have had enough, but I can't imagine we'd get more than a sixth, and maybe not even a seventh. Players like Patterson, Ojomo, and Trattou probably have no trade value individually, although they might collectively. It's certainly something to investigate.

What I'd like to see is for the Giants to cut Diehl, and then pick up a veteran FA OT after final cuts. But I doubt that happens. My guess is that they keep Diehl.
Optimus, I can see Jerry dealing
section125 : 8/24/2013 9:33 am : link
one of the young DTs or DEs for a draft pick. Cannot see getting any on field help with what he could deal, even in the LB position. Surprising (knock wood) that except for Da'Monster all the DL has stay healthy.
I would think the guy with some value is Patterson
BillT : 8/24/2013 9:37 am : link
He's a known commodity, former starter, not too old and has shown with the Giants he can still play and is recovered from his medial issues. Guys like Austin, Trattou, Tracy don't have the playing background to bring much.
Thanks Acid
Optimus-NY : 8/24/2013 9:40 am : link
There's no way they're cutting Diehl. Trattou and Tracy will have some trade value to good teams that need 4-3 DEs that want to skip ahead of the waiver line by trading for one of them (I'm only talking about a 7th round pick, but it's better than nothing). The Steelers announcers were very complimentary of the depth that the Giants have on the DL. Look out for the Damontre Moore situation too. He might be a darkhorse candidate for IR if he doesn't recover from his shoulder contusion (just throwing that out there).
Great post
armstead98 : 8/24/2013 9:45 am : link
Interesting recap of the trades. Tynes for a 7th round pick is an unheralded move.
Patterson and Austin are interesting
Optimus-NY : 8/24/2013 9:46 am : link
I don't think the Giants would trade Austin at this point (if only to not look embarassed), but Patterson is another story. He's a vet, like I mentioned above, who would just become a FA upon being released. Only a team that's really desperate for 4/3 DT help due to injuries at this point would consider that deal. I'm not watching preseason football outside of the Giants.

Are there any teams that fit this description that you guys know of? We're going to likely be seeing some trades made in the coming days of this variety (i.e., filling roster holes through trades instead of through the waiver wire, or post final cut-down date free agency).
I think the Giants should PUP JPP
nomad1986 : 8/24/2013 9:49 am : link
so they can keep an extra DL for the first 6 games and get JPP 100% healthy for the back half of the season when the Giants usually struggle to make the playoffs. If all the DL's stay healthy after 6 games when they bring JPP back they can decide who has the least value after 6 games that matter.
P.S. What fringe players put on film this week i the 3rd and most

important preseason game is going to weigh heavily in what assistant in pro personnel departments do throughout the league who are scouting other teams in preseason for help. I'm assuming scouts from other teams attend open practices as well throughout the league if they can do so to get a feel for personnel on other teams throughout the league (there is no replacement for coach's film of course).
BillT: The problem with Patterson as trade bait...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/24/2013 9:58 am : link
...is that he'll be a free agent if the Giants cut him. Unless a team is really strapped for cap space and doesn't want to risk having to outbid somebody else, they can just wait for him to be released. I agree that he's the best player who figures to be cut by the Giants.

Austin might bring a late pick, just off memories of his Senior Bowl performance. Contractually, Ojomo is attractive because he is controlled for three more years and offers some versatility. You might conceivably get a Mr. Irrelevant-type pick for Tracy, because teams are always looking for pass rushers.

If Reese trades to get a player, it could be a swing tackle if they aren't comfortable with Brewer as #3, or a guard if Baas doesn't progress and they have to move Boothe again. WR is a possibility too, if Murphy's leg doesn't improve soon. And of course, Reese is always in the market for somebody's seventh linebacker (who will immediately become the third- or fourth-best on our roster).
could see them trading for a veteran offensive lineman
Andy in Boston : 8/24/2013 10:00 am : link
that is a fringe starter type....
would be curious of who the teams are that are out there that have alot of depth on their OL...as they would obviously be the teams that the Giants would talk to.

Austin in a trade brings

Very little back. Maybe a 5th or 6th? Otherwise maybe Jernigan? Zero need for a guy who really is the 5th or 6th.
Ok not zero need but

It is hard to see gains in trades for fringe players. Even if Reese
wgenesis123 : 8/24/2013 10:08 am : link
aquired a talented fringe player would Coughlin ever play him. Next year perhaps unless its someone really good on special teams. When I look at those trades its no accident that the Tynes trade stands out. Salary cap makes other trades difficult but not impossible. Someone in a contract year like Linval Joseph is the best bet for an impact trade. Very much doubt anything like that will happen though.

You have now thrown the potential IR scenario on Moore on a couple of threads without providing any factual basis for it

Resell has indicated he has big plansTHIS SEASON for Moore and shoulder contusions do not qualify for IR any more then a case of sniffles would

Moore is playing this season and playing a lot

The real issue is what do the Jints do with all of these DL whom they do not have roster spots for

Looks like right now a bunch of our guys will be playing for other NFL teams
I would not be at all surprised to see the Cowboys scarf up Trattou or Tracy or Ojomo given their lack of depth at de. But I doubt those guys get past Oakland or Jacksonville

Patterson or Austin could also end up with the Cows given their lack of depth at dt

It is just a crying shame that the Jints have such an embarrassment of riches at DL and such a poverty of talent at OL

Jints approach could be putting their franchise player Eli at risk

6 to 8 games so they can keep a player that will be inactive on Sundays then cut anyways when he comes off the PUP list. If he is healthy enough to come off it he will. He is close and he will come off it in the next week or so.
I've dealt with back issues my entire life

I hope the Giants PUP JPP and bring him back 100% healthy not rush him back because it's game 1.

BillT : 8/24/2013 10:16 am : link
Fair enough but a trade still assures a team the players services. As a FA they may have competition of his services and the players preference as well. And I think a swap for a good backup OL would be a god fit.

Optimus-NY : 8/24/2013 10:19 am : link
Key word is potential. Moore hasn't played since after the first preseason game in Pittsburgh. It's been a while. Hopefully he comes back, but to discount the possibility of him going to IR would be silly. I don't think he winds up on it, but it's certainly possible at this point. It would also be a way fro the team to hold onto either Tracy or Trattou.

I'm wondering if Patterson is going to be the odd man out. His health issues might make it hard to depend on him....those were some scary reports coming out of Philly. They may keep Austin since they have a 2nd Rounder invested in Big Marvin.
JPP to PUP is going to be interesting
Optimus-NY : 8/24/2013 10:23 am : link
Reese has talked like JPP will come off it for a while now, but I'll believe it when I see it. I think they'll carry him on the 53-man roster to start the season myself, with him possibly being inactive to start the year for a couple of games. It shouldn't come as a surprise though if they do PUP him like they did with Canty last season.
If JPP passes his conditioning test and medical staff says he can
fredgbrown : 8/24/2013 10:28 am : link
come off the PUP lists then he will come off it. The Giants are not going to keep him on it just to make sure and play it safe.
Patterson is a goner
nygirlie : 8/24/2013 10:33 am : link
unfortunately unless there is an IR injury to the top 4 DTs.

His contract is only for this season and he is a FA when cut.
So likely anyone would trade for him when they could just offer him a two year contract as a FA, now that he is healthy.

Kuhn or Austin will get the 5th inactive DT spot if there is one.

This is a real shame as Patterson has looked pretty good.
Anyone on the PUP List at this point is a serious candidate to stay on
Optimus-NY : 8/24/2013 10:33 am : link
it to start the season at this point in the preseason. A week from today prior to 6 p.m. NY time (August 31st), teams must reduce their rosters to a maximum of 53 players on the Active/Inactive List.

In addition, check this out from the link below regarding the August 31st final cut-down date:

Quote:
Simultaneously with the cut-down to 53, clubs that have players in the categories of Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness must select one of the following options:

1 - place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable.
2 - request waivers
3 - terminate contract
4 - trade contract
5 - or continue to count the player on the Active List.

I think most on this site would agree that Trattou and Ojomo has

good post. My guess is that we are more likely to see one trade which you had missed (and was easy to miss), the Michael Matthews trade to the Patriots.

Essentially, Matthews was going to be cut, but Reese looked around to see if he could get anything. He made a trade with the Pats for a conditional pick. As far as I can recall, the conditions were never met, so they essentially gave him up for nothing, but at the least steered where he was going to go.

I think the Giants will try to do this with a guy like Trattou or Ojomo, at least try to keep them from going to another team where they might have even the slightest chance of coming back to bite them. But as we saw with the Anthony Mix stuff, when he went to Washington, BBI was in semi-meltdown mode. And Mix ended up doing nothing.

Remember this about the PUP list too:
Optimus-NY : 8/24/2013 10:51 am : link
Whoever is on this list counts fully on the salary cap. This means that the cap number of whoever replaces the player on the PUP list on the roster at this moment is going to be added on to the team's 2013 cap total.

If that player as less than 4 years of accrued experience, and if he is cut, then his cap number will only count on a per game basis (as opposed to veterans with 4 or more accrued years of NFL experience whose contracts are guaranteed if they are on the 53-man roster to start the season).

This means, that if the player that holds onto JPP's roster spot (let's say it's Justin Trattou who has 2 accrued seasons of experience for the sake of argument) is cut after week 6 to make room for him, then his $480,000 cap number will only count for the 6 weeks he spent on the roster.

You'd divide his base salary of $480K (which also happens to be his cap number; he doesn't have a bonus btw) by 17, and multiply by the amount of weeks he spent on the roster, which in this hypothetical case would be 6. This would turn out to be $169,412. Trattou would count about $28,235 against the cap per week that he spends on the 53-man roster.
Matt in SGS - Thanks
Optimus-NY : 8/24/2013 11:00 am : link
Thanks for the correction regarding the Matthews trade. That totally went over my head. It's going to be interesting to see how the Giants handle their roster surplus at DE next Friday and/or Saturday before final cuts are mandated to be made by 6 pm NY time. Ojomo is another good name you pointed out to add to the list of Trattou and Tracy at DE.
JPP

Is not going on pup
Moore is not going on IR
The Jints D is built around their pass rush
Osi left
Tuck has declined and Kiwi has to relearn the de position
Potentially JPP and Moore are the two best pass rushers on the team
They both will be playing a bunch this year or we won't be making the playoffs
I would love a player- player

trade. If we get out of the preseason with no more injuries (knock on wood), than I'm all for trying to trade some DL depth for perhaps a better LB. We are desperate for a Mike, and I have little confidence in whi we have now.

We are fine with coverage LBers in Rivers, and Williams, but we don't have anyone I feel confident comanding the middle of the field and helping take down players in the opponents backfield. Not sure if any teams are in the opposite situation as us, but Pitt seemed like they may be a possibility when we played them (though I'm not sure they have good LB depth).

At this point I'd be greatful for a vet much like Pierce to come in and help out, even if only for a year. There has to be someone out there, theres no way I feel comfortable going into the season with this LB unit though. Even if we use the 3 safety set as the primary package, we need a solid 2 down MLB.
I think Patterson could be playing against us week one.
