Here's a list of the trades Jerry Reese has made for players in his time here as GM starting in 2007 (please correct me if I'm wrong):
1. Early March 2007 - Giants acquire RB Reuben Droughns from Cleveland in exchange for WR tim Carter (
SOURCE HERE).
2. Late May 2007 - Giants acquire K Lawrence Tynes from Kansas City for a 2008 7th round pick. (
SOURCE HERE).
3. Sept. 1, 2007 - Giants trade RB Ryan Grant to GB for a 6th round pick in the 2008 draft. (
SOURCE HERE).
4. Late July 2008 - Giants trade TE Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans for 2nd and 5th round draft picks in the 2009 draft. (
SOURCE HERE)
5. Sept. 3, 2010 - Giants trade 5th and 7th round draft picks in the 2011 draft to the Vikings for backup QB Sage Rosenfels & RB/KR Darius Reynaud - (

6. April 12, 2012 - Giants trade 5th round draft pick in the 2012 draft to Cincinnati for OLB Keith Rivers. (

That's almost a player trade per year if you do the math. It'll be interesting to see what develops this year. Out of these 6 trades above, 2 have been of the "dump off" variety (The Shockey trade and the Grant trade). One was a player for player deal (Droughns for Mr. Dominate himself, Tim Carter). The other 3 were draft picks for players.
Two of these six trades occurred around the final cut-down date (the Grant deal and the Rosenfels/Reynaud deal). The Giants could very well be in a situation to deal off a young player like DEs Justin Trattou and/or Adrian Tracy again this year like they did Grant to Green Bay in Sept. of 2007. They're young and can be controlled by the team that trades for them both this year, as well as next year.
The advantage of trading for a young player before he hits the waiver wire is that you don't have to compete with teams that are ahead of you on the waiver wire. TE Larry Donnell could also fit into this category for a good team that is desperate for TE help, like New England for instance.
The reason I didn't include veterans who are on the chopping block like DT Mike Patterson who has 4 or more accrued years of experience (as per
Article 29, Section 1 of the CBA covering Waivers and Release) is because they aren't subject to the waiver process, and are free agents as soon as they're released. It'd be wasteful for a team to trade for that kind of player in most instances, unless they are truly desperate to get him.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants traded a young player on the fringe in an area of strength like Trattou and/or Tracy to a team that has an area of strength that is an area of weakness for the Giants (i.e., 4th Running Back, Backup OT, Backup LB. These kinds of trades are beneficial to both teams in that the players in question help to adjust the balance of rosters, and also helps to avoid competing on the waiver wire for these players in what accounts to a feeding frenzy by every team in the league.
Keep your eyes open for these kinds of deals again this year by the Giants and other teams as well. The Eagles already made a player for player trade with Pittsburgh. Trades like this are most likely to occur towards the end of preseason as we approach the Final Cut-down date of August 31st a week from today (the cut-down to 75 is in 3 days on August 27th). As you watch preseason games, look around the league outside of teams in the NFC East for teams who play a 4-3 defense, and who have a dearth of talent and depth at DE who also happen to have depth at RB. They would be ideal trading partners with the Giants. I wouldn't be surprised if we see something like this go down by this time next week. Discuss.
I think Austin is most likely to be traded if the Giants have had enough, but I can't imagine we'd get more than a sixth, and maybe not even a seventh. Players like Patterson, Ojomo, and Trattou probably have no trade value individually, although they might collectively. It's certainly something to investigate.
What I'd like to see is for the Giants to cut Diehl, and then pick up a veteran FA OT after final cuts. But I doubt that happens. My guess is that they keep Diehl.
Are there any teams that fit this description that you guys know of? We're going to likely be seeing some trades made in the coming days of this variety (i.e., filling roster holes through trades instead of through the waiver wire, or post final cut-down date free agency).
Austin might bring a late pick, just off memories of his Senior Bowl performance. Contractually, Ojomo is attractive because he is controlled for three more years and offers some versatility. You might conceivably get a Mr. Irrelevant-type pick for Tracy, because teams are always looking for pass rushers.
If Reese trades to get a player, it could be a swing tackle if they aren't comfortable with Brewer as #3, or a guard if Baas doesn't progress and they have to move Boothe again. WR is a possibility too, if Murphy's leg doesn't improve soon. And of course, Reese is always in the market for somebody's seventh linebacker (who will immediately become the third- or fourth-best on our roster).
would be curious of who the teams are that are out there that have alot of depth on their OL...as they would obviously be the teams that the Giants would talk to.
Resell has indicated he has big plansTHIS SEASON for Moore and shoulder contusions do not qualify for IR any more then a case of sniffles would
Moore is playing this season and playing a lot
The real issue is what do the Jints do with all of these DL whom they do not have roster spots for
Looks like right now a bunch of our guys will be playing for other NFL teams
I would not be at all surprised to see the Cowboys scarf up Trattou or Tracy or Ojomo given their lack of depth at de. But I doubt those guys get past Oakland or Jacksonville
Patterson or Austin could also end up with the Cows given their lack of depth at dt
It is just a crying shame that the Jints have such an embarrassment of riches at DL and such a poverty of talent at OL
Jints approach could be putting their franchise player Eli at risk
His contract is only for this season and he is a FA when cut.
So likely anyone would trade for him when they could just offer him a two year contract as a FA, now that he is healthy.
Kuhn or Austin will get the 5th inactive DT spot if there is one.
This is a real shame as Patterson has looked pretty good.
In addition, check this out from the link below regarding the August 31st final cut-down date:
1 - place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable.
2 - request waivers
3 - terminate contract
4 - trade contract
5 - or continue to count the player on the Active List.

Essentially, Matthews was going to be cut, but Reese looked around to see if he could get anything. He made a trade with the Pats for a conditional pick. As far as I can recall, the conditions were never met, so they essentially gave him up for nothing, but at the least steered where he was going to go.
I think the Giants will try to do this with a guy like Trattou or Ojomo, at least try to keep them from going to another team where they might have even the slightest chance of coming back to bite them. But as we saw with the Anthony Mix stuff, when he went to Washington, BBI was in semi-meltdown mode. And Mix ended up doing nothing.

If that player as less than 4 years of accrued experience, and if he is cut, then his cap number will only count on a per game basis (as opposed to veterans with 4 or more accrued years of NFL experience whose contracts are guaranteed if they are on the 53-man roster to start the season).
This means, that if the player that holds onto JPP's roster spot (let's say it's Justin Trattou who has 2 accrued seasons of experience for the sake of argument) is cut after week 6 to make room for him, then his $480,000 cap number will only count for the 6 weeks he spent on the roster.
You'd divide his base salary of $480K (which also happens to be his cap number; he doesn't have a bonus btw) by 17, and multiply by the amount of weeks he spent on the roster, which in this hypothetical case would be 6. This would turn out to be $169,412. Trattou would count about $28,235 against the cap per week that he spends on the 53-man roster.
Moore is not going on IR
The Jints D is built around their pass rush
Osi left
Tuck has declined and Kiwi has to relearn the de position
Potentially JPP and Moore are the two best pass rushers on the team
They both will be playing a bunch this year or we won't be making the playoffs
We are fine with coverage LBers in Rivers, and Williams, but we don't have anyone I feel confident comanding the middle of the field and helping take down players in the opponents backfield. Not sure if any teams are in the opposite situation as us, but Pitt seemed like they may be a possibility when we played them (though I'm not sure they have good LB depth).
At this point I'd be greatful for a vet much like Pierce to come in and help out, even if only for a year. There has to be someone out there, theres no way I feel comfortable going into the season with this LB unit though. Even if we use the 3 safety set as the primary package, we need a solid 2 down MLB.
