but isn't there an nfl rule that if they make the final roster then their salary is guaranteed for the year. Since Hill doesn't count right now, cutting Sash means that they could resign him later and then let him go without salary implication when Hill returns.
Does Sash getting cut mean we can expect the Giants to announce
I may be wrong but I believe if you are a Vet and on the roster week one your salary is guaranteed. I see the Giants going after a few after week 1 Sash & KP would make sense.
This move to waive Sash means that Cooper Taylor is on the team. We'll pick up a 4th safety IMO by the time week 2 comes around. It may even be one of Sash or Caldwell, or somebody else on another roster.
release means the Giants will keep Ross and Thomas and use them at safety when they shift to a nickel or dime set. See how they do and then make a call after Week 4 when Hill is able to return.
Also, maybe with that concussion, Sash will be out a few weeks anyway, and with Hill gone, they can't afford to carry him for no reason.
kid has a future; I wouldn't be shocked to see a bad team claim him later this evening/tomorrow morning for their 53-man roster. If he clears waivers, he's a shoe-in candidate for the Practice Squad.

My cutdown list for #NYG at 7 right now: Broha, Goodin, Sash, Barden, Caldwell, McCants and James ... 15 more cuts/moves to come.
Art Stapleton @art_stapleton 58s
And yes, Markus Kuhn staying on PUP to start regular season will open another spot. So 13 cuts/moves left, maybe more #NYG
1. Reserve/Suspended List - FS, Will Hill
2. Reserve PUP - DT, Markus Kuhn
CUTS:
3. DE, Matt Broha - Waived
4. OG/C, Stephen Goodin - Waived
5. CB, Charles James - Waived
6. OT, Matt McCants - Waived
7. WR, Ramses Barden - Released
8. SS, Tyler Sash - Waived
9. FS, David Caldwell
Players with more than 4 years experience get released. They can be signed as free agents with any team.
Players with less than that get waived. Every other team in the league gets a chance to claim them (and their current contract) before they become free agents.
We have to hope for no injuries at Safety. I think we can get by with 3 for now. We will keep 6 CB's, TT, Ross and Holsey can play nickel/dime packages. J. Williams plays as a 3rd safety in his spot at times, he can cover.
Thomas led the team in tackles and INT for two seasons. Im pretty sure he could handle the responsibility IF it was presented to him. I will take Michael Eisens opinion over most of BBI, with all do respect. :-)
Players placed on Waivers are players with LESS THAN 4 accrued years. They can be claimed by other teams over a 24 hour period.
Veterans with 4 OR MORE accrued seasons of experience automatically become free agents, and are not subject to waiver claims (i.e., Mike Patterson for instance). These players are free to sign with the team of their choice.
...in the amount of time he was given this pre-season, he had 8 tackles and 1 sack. And he was often around the ball. Will be very surprised if some team doesn't put a claim in for what has been a productive ball player in two pre-seasons.

Hearing the Giants are very much interested in having Charles james back if he clears waivers. Big if, but he could be back. #nyg
wondering if there is any chance Giants are trying to trade Austin. Now is the time....if they're going to cut him, and other teams are interested...they'll want him before he hits the waiver wire.
why? Giants are loaded at DT....he's had limited opportunities this preseason...he's a 310 pounder who can rush the passer, who's really flashed. He's as healthy as he's been in 2 years....and some teams I'm sure see his upside. I'm sure there has to be teams thin at DT.
I think Giants could pick up a 5th-6th rounder or another quality safety or o-lineman.
might get a seventh or sixth for Austin. He's young, has been injured, and has flashed this preseason. Somebody might think he'd benefit from a change of scenery. And what do teams usually get in the sixth or seventh round anyway? But that's it. And I'm not saying I would even make that trade.
08/11/13 - TE Jake Ballard returned to game action and made his Patriots debut in the preseason opener against the Eagles. Ballard is working back from a torn ACL that he suffered against New England as a member of the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. He got the start against Philly and while he didn't register a catch, he did have a number of impressive blocks. "It was good to see him out there," Bill Belichick said of Ballard's performance. "Jake has been a regular participant through training camp. I think he played 10, 12 plays, whatever it was last night. It seemed to go well, so we'll just continue to go along with both his input as to how he's progressing and our medical staff, in consultation with them, to continue to try to let him work his way back to maybe a more extended role than where he's at now hopefully. But that will just have to take some time. We'll continue to go through the process, but I thought he did well. He showed up positively on a number of plays
However, I don't see Donnell eclipsing him on the depth chart anytime soon. I had some hope that Robinson might've been able to do it, but that hope has faded fast.
You can't have a blocker like that on the field. If he was a matchup problem in the pass game you can overlook the blocking. But he isn't.
The Giants gave him more PT vs NE to see something. He didn't deliver. TC will not put up with his blocking. Robinson and/or Donnell will get the majority of snaps. This will happen very soon.
General manager Jerry Reese speculated Thomas might be better off at safety, where he can have the play in front of him and where quickness and cutting is not as much of a priority. It shouldnt be a major transition for Thomas, who earlier with the Giants moved into a safety spot at times when in the nickel defense. For now, where he plays is not nearly as worrisome as if he plays.
Moops - Yeah should know by now that BBI'ers know more than
The reason the Giants gave Meyers more playing time against the Pats was because Robinson was out. Don't let your bias cloud your perception of reality.
And its possible they're going thin at safety because in a pinch, he can go in and contribute.
TTH, theres more reasons given than just hitting. Im not saying their opinions on TTs ability are the final word, but they have a little more to base their opinion on than you or I?
Why is it some corners have been very successful at transitioning to safety but guys who have been playing safety their whole lives cant do it? Maybe because some guys are just good football players and some arent?
... there are lots of CBs who have transitioned to safety later in their careers with apparently little difficulty. I'm pretty sure every veteran DB knows what all the DBs on the field are supposed to be doing. It could be done with TT, and I'm not sure it wouldn't be a good idea.
But the issue with TT is not whether he's a good corner, it's whether he's physically capable of playing in the NFL. If and when the Giants are convinced of that, they might decide that their best secondary would include TT at safety. And sure, at that point, they would start giving him reps in practice, and they haven't done that yet. But holy cow, if we're worried about only having 3 safeties on the roster, and if Rolle or Mundy got dinged up in a game, would you be terrified to throw TT in there? I would not, if I was convinced he was healthy enough to play.
Not good at arguing, are we, because I never said it was easy.
Sash, Caldwell, myself, we can't play NFL safety because we don't have the proper skill set. Thomas probably does. In fact I'll go out on a limb and say Thomas has much more talent than I do(or Sash or a lot of actual starting safeties in the NFL).
He can play if he had to is all I'm saying. You said
Quote:
It would take a year to learn a new position...and then maybe fail.
and this just isn't true.
If you had to put Thomas at safety(God forbid)next Sunday he would probably struggle but I have no doubt he would get better every day.
If Terrell Thomas plays Deon Grant's third-safety role in the nickel defense, that really isn't what you are thinking in terms of a traditional safety role.
They were doing that all summer. Thomas has been there, Ross has been there, Hosley has been there.
This thread has turned into a big pissing match...This should be for
This year Rolle was supposed to move back and play that roaming position and Brown more in the box. Brown is now out so that may change but just assuming a guy can play a position doesn't mean he would or not do well up until its tried.
Long term Hill is coming back and you can bet Taylor was drafted to be the closer to the LOS safety. Big Nickel wise who knows now as any plans are probably just to get to game 5 when Hill comes back.
he thinks TT has the talent to play safety and that might be his ultimate position if he hopes to stay in the league for any length of time, considering his injury situation.
And TT himself feels he is talented enough to make the switch, and he's more than willing to play safety if it means prolonging his career.
That's where the speculation comes from.
Nothing is imminent, barring an emergency.
want Talley. Would rather go with five WRs, and use the spot for another position. Put one of Talley, Hardy, or Collins, on the PS if necessary, but not on the roster.
His status as a guy with no accrued years will help the team since he offers roster flexibility, unlike Barden. If Barden were on the team week 1, his FULL contract would count against the cap. Players with less than 4 accrued years like Talley on the opening day squad as well as players signed after week 1 only count against the cap on a weekly basis as opposed to the full season.
I wouldn't be surprised if a trade is being worked out for some of our
Art Stapleton @art_stapleton 15m
Remember: if #NYG decide to put Andre Brown on IR-designation to return, can't be done until Tuesday. So AB must be kept on 53 until then.
Agreed. The Giants must know that other teams would be interested in some of the DL we have to cut. Get what you can, even if it's a few low round picks, or maybe a backup player at an important position like OT, RB, or S.
Is simply a bad football player, and he does not belong on an NFL roster. They will keep the 6 corners, and 3 safeties, and Hill will make the 4th when he gets back. Sash was never making this team. The guy I think sneaks in is Talley, and I said it yesterday, I also think Donnell sneaks in. I also think they go with the 6 DT's and 4 DE's, and cut Tracy, unless they keep him and cut Bosworth. Giants do not use linebackers enough to keep any more then 6, and they could go with 5 if they keep Tracy.
A trade based simply on conditions that may or may not be met to simply steer the player away from any direct competition would suffice (ideally to teams in any of the 3 AFC divisions that the Giants won't play this year other than the AFC West). Matt pointed this out to me on a thread I started last week about Jerry Reese trades. He brought up the Michael Matthews trade to New England as an example. The Giants wound up getting nothing for him due to conditions not being met, but at least the Giants sent him in a direction the would prefer him to go, rather than a team we compete directly with like the Foreskins, Eagles, and Cowflops.
according to Ralph Sash was cut because of the concussion. Sash made the team last year amidst much stronger competition. Even if just special teams he was not a bad football player
I totally agree with you...and also hope they only keep 5 LB....I would keep Bosworth and cut Herzlich...and add a LB or two to the P S....I would go 6 DT...and keep 5 DE.....with Tracy being the 5th DE....even though Trattou and Ojomo played better in the preseason....Tracy gives them more flexibility to do more things like play LB in a pinch as well more then athletic enough to replace Herzlich on special teams....for those that think we need more then 5 LBs on special teams
Let's not resort to name calling, let's try and keep the thread a good thread, Sash is not good, he stinks except for special teams, now that is the only reason they would keep him, and the only reason why they CARRIED him last year. You can make the team if you are that good on specials, and we all understand he was, but he was NEVER going to be an NFL safety, so let's cool it with the dumb post statement, and keep this thread a good one.
Special teams players need the DESIRE to sacrifice their bodies for the team, there is not nearly the skill needed as there is to play an NFL position. If the Giants replace him well, there is a good chance he will not be back, if they struggle, then he might.
Sash can't return to play for the Giants until the amount of time of the settlement passes plus another 6 weeks.
For example, if the settlement is for 3 weeks, then Sash will have to wait until week 10 to possibly re-sign and play for the Giants. You're not likely to see him as a result of this until the middle of the season---if he doesn't sign with another team first, which is certainly a possibility.

is if another GM is in LOVE with your player and will give something up to avoid the possibility that the player is claimed on waivers by another teamr
a Marvin Austin and one of Carr/Painter to Buffalo trade? They need a DT and veteran QB, maybe we get a 5 instead of a 6 pick.
The 'Bay needs a veteran QB behind Rodgers; let GB and Buffalo think we're keeping 3 so only 1 QB will be available from us. Let them 'fight' over QB, and if GB wins, throw in MA for a higher pick, or nobody at all. Once whichever trade is made, cut the other QB, or keep AND shop the remaining one.
ought to be able to trade Austin for something. Lots of teams are starved at DT, he's still young, he's relatively cheap, and he has shown something this preseason. At the very least, he has his highlight hit of Sanchez.
Agreed. We aren't going to get much. I'd settle for a sixth, but we might only get a seventh.
The motivation for another team to at least give something is that he is still subject to waivers, so a trade is necessary in order to ensure that they get him.
I know that Patterson has outplayed him during the preseason, but he's starting to flash some of that talent. It'd be a shame that we waited this long to give up on him.
The Top 51 Rule ceases at 4 pm on Wednesday, September 4th. They still have about 4 days to take care of their cap problems. The Giants are listed as being $2,966,712 under the cap now as per the NFLPA's Top 51 League Cap Report website.
he's not good enough to start at LB, but we're down to the minimum there and he's an excellent special teamer. I'd expect him to stay although he might be replaced depending who else is available on the wire.
Does that mean to her that he's gone (waived) or simply that whatever happens happens for a reason? Do you know or have a guess? (My own would be that he makes the team.)
Really wondering why we need to keep Herzlich to play special teams when a player like Tracy is the same size, more athletic, and gives you the same thing on specials....prefer to go with the position of strength DL...and cut a mediocre LB Herzlich
Getting a draft pick when otherwise you'd going to get nothing
Giants should sign Antoine Caldwell or Chilo Rachal as O Line depth....glad Sash is finally gone. Its hard for a guy who has no motor to be chasing down guys like DeSean Jackson and Dez Bryant. Mundy is way better then Sash. Take the blinders off
DE & LB are interchangeable...don't understand why guys on this board think we need to hold on to scrubs...simply to play specials...go with your best football players regardless of positions
The one aspect of the Giants game that has been good in preseason
What value is there in keeping more then 6 DTS and less of another position. This isn't fantasy football guys. One injury and then its in Reese we detest.
That being said its still time to give up on Herz.
He sucks. Doesnt play specials. Will only take up a roster spot. Keep Donnell over him. Find a back up slot guy that got cut. With Nicks, Cruz, Randle, Murphy, Myers, and Wilson Eli willhave plenty of players to throw to. Pick up up a slot guy who can play unlike Jernigan. Id take the Jets Spadola over Jernigan
The value is Herzlich is a mediocre undrafted free agent that can be replaced with a similar player on your practice squad...or somewhere else in the league...in the mean time players like Moore and Tracy can more then do the job on specials...there is more value in keeping more talented players...then simply deciding based on a set number at each position...
I see Tracy's role as a Kiwi type role...one of the other backers...most likely Bosworth would back up the MLB spot...go with your most talent ball players is the better move
I said it earlier that Tracy could be retained if they believe he can play standing up, I thought Bosworth would be the guy cut though, but if it is Herz, that is a good sign that they really like him, and we really need a surprise back there, that is for sure.
For all this speculation on who can play on specials. I'm sorry but until l see it am not convinced. Seen too many seasons where our specials sucked. Sash was impressive on specials. Unfortunate he got injured. Looked liked a gamer.

Sash may have been the Giants best special team player this
more than Taylor. Taylor had the worst play of the preseason on the 50 Yard TD vs NE. My gosh his feet had cement boots on them.
The WR stumbled and was still able to gather himself and get past Taylor without even getting touched. This guy may gets snaps as our last line of defense? Yikes. At least Caldwell could close to the ball and tackle.

Sort of related, but someone mentioned Herzlich's girlfriend tweeting before. I follow her as well on twitter (good look in to the side of NFL players lives we don't usually see) and I know she was close with Carr's wife. That may have been why she tweeted what she did. Not necessarily because MH was cut.

#Giants had tough decisions on the DL. Hearing one player likely left out is ex-2nd rounder Marvin Austin. Waiting on final word tho
Otherwise they wouldn't be cut and they wouldn't be passed up by 15 other lousy teams. This is not where you find diamonds in the rough. This is where you find fools gold.
To reach the roster limit, the Giants made the following moves:
*They terminated the contracts of Carr and running back Ryan Torain.
*They waived Sash with an injury settlement.
*Offensive lineman Selvish Capers (knee) was waived/injured.
*Wide receiver Ramses Barden was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.
*Defensive tackle Markus Kuhn was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Kuhn, who tore his ACL at Cincinnati last Nov. 11, must miss at least the first six games of the season.
*Safety Will Hill was moved to the NFLs reserve/suspended list. The NFL announced on July 20 that Hill, a second-year pro, was suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2013 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.
Hill will be eligible to return to the Giants active roster on Monday, Sept. 30, following the teams game the previous day against the Kansas City Chiefs.
*The following players were waived: defensive ends Adrian Tracy, Adewale Ojomo and Matt Broha; defensive tackle Marvin Austin; linebacker Kyle Bosworth; offensive linemen Eric Herman, Matt McCants, Stephen Goodin and Bryant Browning; safety David Caldwell; cornerbacks Terrence Frederick and Charles James; and wide receivers Kevin Hardy, Marcus Harris and Julian Talley. Giants announce 53-man roster - ( New Window )
I honestly think that the only guy who surprised me this preseason - meaning a 3rd/4th string guy who has a chance to become a starter - was McBride. Good in coverage. Perfect form on many tackles, lays the wood. Stood out rewatching games.

what if the rationale is that Nassib can't run the scout team well enough yet and wouldn't be ready yet to even remotely take the helm during a game if Eli was banged up.
But after week 4, when Will Hill needs to be added to the roster, they dump Painter and only go with 2 QBs if Nassib has made decent progress?
Trattou made it! Great for him, though I liked what Ojomo brought on specials and as a pass rush specialist a little more. It may have been a condition of attitude, Trattou certainly deserved it; may you be the next Dave Tollefson.
Here is the current Giants roster, which is subject to change before they fly to Dallas to begin the season:
Offense (26)
QB (3): Eli Manning, Curtis Painter, Ryan Nassib
RB: (4): David Wilson, Andre Brown, DaRel Scott, Michael Cox
FB (1): Henry Hynoski
WR (5): Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle, Louis Murphy, Jerrel Jernigan
TE (4): Brandon Myers, Bear Pascoe, Adrien Robinson, Larry Donnell
OL: (9): David Diehl, Chris Snee, Will Beatty, Kevin Boothe, David Baas, Justin Pugh, Jim Cordle, Brandon Mosley, James Brewer
Defense (24)
DE (5): Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul, Mathias Kiwanuka, Damontre Moore, Justin Trattou
DT (5): Linval Joseph, Cullen Jenkins, Shaun Rogers, Johnathan Hankins, Mike Patterson
LB (5): Dan Connor, Keith Rivers, Spencer Paysinger, Mark Herzlich, Jacquian Williams
CB (6): Corey Webster, Prince Amukamara, Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas, Jayron Hosley, Trumaine McBride
S (3): Antrel Rolle, Ryan Mundy, Cooper Taylor
Specialists (3)
K: Josh Brown
P: Steve Weatherford
LS: Zak DeOssie
Nassib has no little shot at being a competent QB this year. A 3rd QB was critical. Then again - we have no shot w/ Painter either. lol. If Eli goes down then we'll be rooting for draft picks.
poor play forced the Giants to keep 3 QBs this year and they didn't want to risk losing him on waivers and trying to stash him on the practice squad. Ultimately, Painter is younger (and I believe cheaper) than Carr. Since they were more or less the same out there production wise, it's no shock to see Painter win the spot.
And give a tip of the hat to Scott. I thought he was dead after that fumble vs. the Jets. He ran hard and like a guy who wanted to keep his job in that Patriots game and it because of that, with the Brown injury, he made the team.
but I'm a bit surprised that Trattou made it over Ojomo.
Also think the Giants add a RB and a Safety before the weekend is up. Can't possibly seeing them being comfortable with Cooper Taylor has their only back-up. And there are better RB options out there to back-up David Wilson.
There's no debate there. Preseason didn't matter with those two at all. Hey I like T2 but there was nothing to indicate yep let's keep him. You can try to swing it anyway you want but preseason for some of these guys didn't matter. Scott, LMAO.
is currently the second best CB on the roster IMO. There is more to the preseason than the games. He showed a lot at practice. In fact, I thought he played well in the games minus the stumble he had on the long TD pass.
Scott looked just fine against the Pats and otherwise ran w/ the 3rd and 4th stringers. He's on the roster until they can find someone better.
T2? Seriously? That was a no brainer. You're going to judge him based on limmited pre-season games as he works his way back? I think his body of work earns him the benefit of the doubt.
...I'm with you. Very surprised Scott made it over Torrain.
I don't think Scott has much of a future with this team. I see the speed... but I don't see the running talent. He's a walking medicine cabinet, and he will be down with some ache or pain in a very short while.
Herman looked like Cordle did except against third stringers (awful).
Cordle is putrid, but keeping him (for now) instead of a guy who will very likely be PS available (if they even want him...) isn't some horrid move worth raising even an eyebrow at.
Micko, the Giants don't know what T2 is able to do
Who do you keep over Cordle? And why not assume he's going to be replaced if the right guy comes along. Every OL that was cut stunk as much if not more than Cordle.
Ramses Barden @RamsesSHINES 38s
Not exactly how I would have drawn it up. Emotional day. Great organization. I will miss a lot of people. I Wish the NY Giants the best
Exactly. They don't know yet - but they do know what they had pre-injury and it was a pro-bowl caliber player - so, perhaps they should stick w/ him and let Fredericks go.
But once again, he only plays one position and in 4 preseasons have shown he isn't very good at that one position. Shouldn't that be a sign for a change?
And no one can convince me about Scott over any running back. I would take any retired back over him.
May be a guessing game, but I'm guessing Giants made decisions on more info and better basis than anyone on BBI ... it's one thing to be surprised ... quite another to actually think anyone here actually knows better than the coaches
Fair enough - but I assume the Giants will be looking to get better at OL through waiver and free agents. Scott vs. Torrain? Does it really matter? Cox is more intriguing than either. I thought Scott looked fine against the Pats.
then I feel better. I am also surprised at 5 LB's and 3 safeties.. but I expect that Damontre Moore will get some looks at LB and Thomas/Ross at safety as well..

It had to be the good showing he made against NE because the rest of the games he was pathetic. I thought Torain would have been a better choice as he seems like he's be a better blocker for pass protection. Very suprised by this and by keeping Painter.
I don't think we are seeing all the cuts yet. I think we will be active on the wavier wire.
He stunk it up in all previous games. Fumbling the ball right off the bat in OT, LOL. Trying to justify Scott over Torain is a losing battle. You just have to chalk it up to one of things that you just shake your head at and move along.
...with Brown's leg injury one of Scott/Torrain had to make the 53. Still a good chance Scott goes if any kind of decent RB shakes loose in the near future.
He looks very good catching the ball. No drops in preseason. Very difficult catch vs the Jets with the ball high and behind him. He snatched it clean and instantly turned up field to run. He looked like a WR on this play. 3 more vs NE. Looks good catching everything with his hands.
He also looks good running routes. Eats up yards fast. Can change directions, dip his shoulder and cut. He seems to adjust to the ball.
Zeke Mowatt dropped the ball on occasion early but developed. I don't know if its the number but he's got me thinking of Mowatt again.
if we have seen enough of Donnell to say he has bad hands. Only Pope would know that at this point. The Giants cannot have stud players at every position. You have to take risk somewhere, and taking risk at TE in this offense makes perfect sense. Finding a good two way TE is hard and those guys get paid. Martellus Bennett is a prime example. Would have been nice to keep him, but at what expense?
Despite the unknowns, I am pleased with the level of talent at TE. Myers will be a versatile weapon in the passing game, Donnell is a good developmental prospect who even if he only blocks well is an upgrade over Pascoe. If Robinson can even be an average NFL TE he adds another athletic body to the mix. As long as the Giants have three solid WRs, no need to spend big money on a big play TE.
You typify the frustrated BBI poster on days like today. No actual facts, examples, logic, or reason to back things up, just statements. I think Pope and Reese know the TEs far a better than any of us.
you catch the ball in traffic and with some contact. I was really expecting Robinson to be much better by this time. Injury or not he was still far too inconsistent with many of his techniques.
I'll say this for Donnell I believe he'll be a very good blocker. That said he'd be one of the 5 worst starting TE's in the NFL if he gets that job.
you know the reasons. All this has been discussed ad nauseum.
Our roster clearly has some areas of concern heading into the season. No surprise in the salary cap era. It isn't frustration to honestly evaluate your teams shortcomings.
Perhaps you prefer the ostrich method of burying your head in the sand in denial.
Not so sure you know who you are talking to, but that's ok. Been watching this team for decades.
Never one to play Ostrich, this team has some significant concerns, but TE is not really one of them, simply because the position is not all that important to the success of the offense.
Now if you want to talk LB, OL and DB depth, right there with you.
I think you vastly under-rate what is in the TE cupboard (yes there is no pro-bowler there) and you over-state the importance of the position to this offense.
It isn't that TE is not important, it is that it is not a focal point of this offense. Giants have won superbowls with the likes of Ballard and Boss, both players are now without teams. You can twist my earlier comments any way you like to suit your argument but the point is TE has not bee a major role in this offense since the Shockey trade and 2013 will not be different. Nothing wrong with the Giants brain trust going with the four guys they have.
The TE is a major threat in the redzone, but you don't need a Rob Gronkowski to have an effective TE redzone threat. Robinson and Donnell are tailor made for that role. The TE is a role player in this system.
Ballard's amazing play in the NE regular season game part of the 2011 run. Great game by him that day though. I do wish he was still here. Would have been cheap, good blocker and apparently good hands.
You want to hit JR for decisions on TEs? How about the fact we had Scott Chandler in camp in 2011.
I'm not questioning anybody on the TEs. It's clearly de-emphasized by the team due to salary demands at other positions. However, they brought in Bennett for a reason last year and he performed well enough that the Bears gave him a bigger contract. It's silly to think TE is not important to this offense. I'm pretty sure the front office & coaches are hoping they can find another diamond in the rough.
probably not, but I don't consider a super bowl run to originate in the mid-season. Maybe it's just me.
Doesn't matter, the point is Ballard was taken off the dust heap, this is how the Giants prefer to fill the TE position and it makes total sense in the salary cap era. No one is saying the TE doesn't matter, just that it is a lesser priority to the Giants. That much is undeniable.
Surprised with decision to go with Scott over Torain
I don't think you and I are that far apart really. Maybe you and I just have two different definitions of "importance." Not saying that a TE does not factor into the success of this offense, just that Eli and Gilbride have made it work with some no-names and journeymen. Barring getting lucky, this trend will continue for the Giants.
Torian could be released but Scott would be subject to waivers..
I remember you mentioning it about 2-3 weeks ago. Not unusual at all. I think the 4 together comprise exactly what this team needs in its corps of TEs.
I agree, it's how they approach filling the position. With all the money locked up at other positions they have to find creative ways to restock the position. I'm questioning the concept that it is not emphasized in the offense. I'd be interested to see how Eli targets TEs relative to WRs/RBs in the passing game. Of course, I'm too lazy to find out.
because Jernigan is a slot receiver and Cruz is coming off this foot/heel injury thing and we don't know how he'll respond or if this will be a problem early in the season, or even throughout the season. So you need him around because he knows the offense and can contribute without putting Eli at risk for turnovers if he's running the wrong routes.
He also can return kicks and punts, which is a need. With Brown out, the Giants really shouldn't risk putting Wilson back there, so they are better off using Jernigan or Scott to do that job.
You make a sound point. While I agree with the Giant's brain trust that is not worth big money, I'm hoping Robinson/Donnell can become consistent redzone targets. I have visions of Robinson going up for the jump ball in the back of the endzone.
sent any potential contenders to Palookaville. The bottom third of those 75 players are never gonna be starters on any team. This last batch of cuts are as low key as you can get. So low key that only dogs can hear them.
Say what you want about the 'final' 53, but you can't say that Reese

We do not gave depth issues at OL. We have quality issues. 9 OL is normal on the 53 with 2 normally not dressed.
Anyway TT can play OL in a pinch. :)
We have 9 DB which is normal so no depth issues there either. In 5 weeks we will have 10 unless one is cut. Meanwhile there will be a small dime instead of a big dime. Taylor will be inactive and is hurt anyway for now.
from NFL.com: " ... Carr had been a valuable asset to the QB room, but the Giants decided to go younger and cheaper.
The Giants also announced that wide receiver Ramses Barden was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. Marvin Austin was the odd man out on the defensive line as the team declined to keep the third-year tackle."
Good riddance of Austin (IMHO); not sure that going with the "cheaper" Painter will pay off on the field if it (heaven forbid!) ever comes to that for more than a series or two.
A lot of Jerry's "low-budget" vet Free Agents made the team
Keeping jernigan as the 2nd Slot receiver would make more sense if he could actually run the correct route and actually catch a ball. He's afraid to get hit, he muffs punts and he's slow. A waste of a spot in my opinion.
Go back to last year and the end of the season, and what Coughlin said. The open question he asked, that he didn't have an answer for. He wanted to know what happened in Atlanta and Baltimore. When the Giants were in the heat of a race for the NFC East against the surging Redskins and the Giants were non-competitive. I think one of the biggest answers that came from that: The Giants were not hungry. They lost their edge.
Look at this roster. There are lots of veterans on this team who signed short term deals with things to prove:
Rogers, Patterson, Ross, Thomas, Mundy, Jenkins, Connor, Rivers, etc.
There are lots of guys that are looking at possibly their last chance in the league. Guys who are trying to prove they can still play. In the end, guys who should have an edge, a chip on their shoulder. Which is what the Giants need.
When you look at why they cut a 2nd rounder with potential/talent like Austin, but have shown nothing in favor of some old warhorses like Patterson and Rogers, guys coming off season ending injuries last year and towards the ends of their careers (and neither with a championship), this is more of what this Giants team needs.
The Giants do better when they are a team on a mission, with something to prove. The makeup of this team has more of those types of guys than last year's version did.
i think some people just prefer to see it all there without having to click. sometimes people dont read. they look at pictures and captions Link - ( New Window )
the text doesnt show up... so if you blow past the slider and the top 3 links looking for a list of players names, you dont see it. first article is garys interview... so if you're hasty and scroll right down the page looking for the 53 names, you dont see it and head over to the bitching room (here)
he wanted to click the BBI logo top left of the screen from the forum where he comes first anyway, then quicly scroll down, and see it. im just playing devils advocate here....
obviously the image silder did nothing for him.
the caption that said 53 cuts underneat didnt stand out.
the link to the story didnt stand out.
and the only excerpts of a story seemed old, the interview and the patriots recap, etc.
maybe hes asking for an edit button in the forum as has been brought up one or two times before so the 53 can be updated in the header of a stickied thread.
im already a few beers deep, so youll have to catch up
but my interest is in why randy and anak or whoever couldnt or didnt see it. the links dont really stand out on the front page as ive mentioned and eric agrees with, and i do think its odd that the first "article" we can actually start to read is gary's interview. yes there is a slider and 3 links above that... some people are going to ignore it and go for quick glance at what looks like a 53 man roster that they think should be clearly there on the homepage. it isnt. a link to the story is in 2 places... yes. but it could be easier to miss than some people think.
Giants Reduce Roster to 53: The Giants have reduced their roster from 75 to 53 players.
As expected, due to his previously-announced drug suspension, the Giants placed S Will Hill on the Reserve/Suspended List. Hill will not be able to practice or play with the team for four weeks. Hill will be eligible to return to the active roster on September 30.
Also, as expected, the Giants placed DT Markus Kuhn (knee) on the Reserve/Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List. Kuhn was placed on the Active (preseason) PUP at the start of training camp. Kuhn is required to remain on the Reserve/PUP for at least six weeks.
WR Ramses Barden (knee) was placed on season-ending Injured Reserve.
The team also released the following 19 players:
QB David Carr (contract terminated)
RB Ryan Torain (contract terminated)
WR Kevin Hardy (waived)
WR Marcus Harris (waived)
WR Julian Talley (waived)
OL Selvish Capers (waived/injured)
OL Matt McCants (waived)
OL Stephen Goodin (waived)
OL Bryant Browning (waived)
OL Eric Herman (waived)
DE Adrian Tracy (waived)
DE Matt Broha (waived)
DE Adewale Ojomo (waived)
DT Marvin Austin (waived)
LB Kyle Bosworth (waived)
CB Charles James (waived)
CB Terrence Frederick (waived)
S Tyler Sash (waived with injury settlement)
S David Caldwell (waived)
Rogers and Rivers both were held back last year by injury. Rogers lasted one preseason game before he was lost for the year due to a blood clot. I'd think his mind was on more than football with that news. He got a new lease on life and now one more chance to play football.
If you go back to the Dallas opener last year, Rivers was one of the most active defensive players on the field....and then got hurt. He never really recovered after that. Thus far he's been very active, and physical. For him, this is also his last shot, and if he hopes for a big $ contract next year, really his last chance.
Jenkins got $3 million guaranteed money. A longer deal yes, but still just $3 million. In watching him at Green Bay and in Philly, Jenkins seemed to be a prideful guy, a hustler. I think the implosion in Philly's Dream Team would weigh on him, make him want to show he can still play and the problems there weren't on him.
I get what you saying, and maybe it will play out that way. But I see a lot of guys in this group who based on adversity have fought to make this roster and stay in the game, rather than guys who feel that they will get a roster spot thanks just to draft status. And those are the guys who stay hungry and are willing to get into a street fight to win games. Last years team, with Boley yukking it up on the sidelines as the season slipped away is what this team needs to get past going into 2013
Give Eric a break fellas

Geez, it's Sat night.
You don't need a fully updated website to function. Figure it out for yourselves :)
Again, the website (front page, roster, depth chart, salaries page, roster analysis section, transactions section) were all updated within 40 minutes of the official announcement.
we have a lot of hungry players that made the roster at DL that had to fight for their careers. I think the fierce competition will make us more feisty up front.
Goodin
Sash
Barden
Stevie brown injury really hurts
I'm sure also depends on who they can sign
Is he at all better than Sash
Regardless, Sash was overrated by many here.
He is a terrible cover safety
I may be wrong but I believe if you are a Vet and on the roster week one your salary is guaranteed. I see the Giants going after a few after week 1 Sash & KP would make sense.
Being cut would be the big surprise
Also, maybe with that concussion, Sash will be out a few weeks anyway, and with Hill gone, they can't afford to carry him for no reason.
Thanks
No interest in McCants, even on the PS.
Look who just hit the waiver wire!!! If it isn't Mr.Underdog himself #GottaLoveIt #UnderdogLifestyle
TC said the S subject has never been thought about. They are interested to see if he can make it on the field as nickel.
My cutdown list for #NYG at 7 right now: Broha, Goodin, Sash, Barden, Caldwell, McCants and James ... 15 more cuts/moves to come.
And yes, Markus Kuhn staying on PUP to start regular season will open another spot. So 13 cuts/moves left, maybe more #NYG

7. WR, Ramses Barden - Released

9. FS, David Caldwell
PA, CW, AR, TT, TH are rhe first 5.
I've got
Prince
Hosley
Webster
Ross
Thomas
Rolle
Munday
Taylor
Which is only 8, you've got to think there's another one to be added.
Unless I've miscounted.
Players with less than that get waived. Every other team in the league gets a chance to claim them (and their current contract) before they become free agents.
non vets = less than 5 accrued seasons = waivers.
They're basically all healthy and contributed.
Veterans with 4 OR MORE accrued seasons of experience automatically become free agents, and are not subject to waiver claims (i.e., Mike Patterson for instance). These players are free to sign with the team of their choice.
Cover three with one S and 2 CBs will not need to change.
So they will dress 3S as usual.
FA = 4+ accrued seasons.
Hearing the Giants are very much interested in having Charles james back if he clears waivers. Big if, but he could be back. #nyg

2. Sash is not a good NFL player.
3. He's injured.
So please explain why it was a dumb cut?
I think Giants could pick up a 5th-6th rounder or another quality safety or o-lineman.
Nicks
Cruz
Randle
Murphy
Jernigan (?)
Hardy (?)
We have our TE already. Donnell will be the starter very soon. He's bigger than Ballard. Better athlete. And he can block.
I thought Caldwell would make it. Keeping 3 S is tight. It may be good news for Austin to make it.
Any of the CBs can help at S. Thomas is physical. He can play the position.
As far as the WRs, JJ, Barden, Talley, Hardy, and Collins. No thanks to all, but JJ makes it by default.
Jfnfnfbfb - ( New Window )
Where do these weird ideas come from?
It would take a year to learn a new position...and then maybe fail.
Would it be the best option, of course not, but while they wait on bonehead Hill it may be a short term solution.
RT @plattdavid: Let the enjoyment of sports lead to ever-increasing affection for God. www.radical.net
Of course, I also thought J. Williams was going to get cut so I was only 50% right.

The Giants gave him more PT vs NE to see something. He didn't deliver. TC will not put up with his blocking. Robinson and/or Donnell will get the majority of snaps. This will happen very soon.

Can Thomas Play Safety - ( New Window )
It's freakin' football.
TC said in answer to a reporter's question that he has not given any thought to the idea and he has no idea where such ideas came from.
TT separately in answer to a journalist's query said the subject has never been mentioned to him . But that he would even play kicker if asked.
What more do you want?
Don' you think they would have even mentioned the subject to TT?
Like maybe read the play book for S?
Or maybe even practice at the position just a tiny bit?
If hitting was the only qualification for playing safety, there would be a lot of good safeties.
Ross is a willing hitter too. How well did he do at safety?
And its possible they're going thin at safety because in a pinch, he can go in and contribute.
TTH, theres more reasons given than just hitting. Im not saying their opinions on TTs ability are the final word, but they have a little more to base their opinion on than you or I?
They both have terrific athletic ability and pro day stats.
And they have played the position well over a year...like a decade.
Why is it some corners have been very successful at transitioning to safety but guys who have been playing safety their whole lives cant do it? Maybe because some guys are just good football players and some arent?
But the issue with TT is not whether he's a good corner, it's whether he's physically capable of playing in the NFL. If and when the Giants are convinced of that, they might decide that their best secondary would include TT at safety. And sure, at that point, they would start giving him reps in practice, and they haven't done that yet. But holy cow, if we're worried about only having 3 safeties on the roster, and if Rolle or Mundy got dinged up in a game, would you be terrified to throw TT in there? I would not, if I was convinced he was healthy enough to play.
You said
If you had to put Thomas at safety(God forbid)next Sunday he would probably struggle but I have no doubt he would get better every day.
They were doing that all summer. Thomas has been there, Ross has been there, Hosley has been there.
would you not
give TT the safety playbook and make him learn it?
practice him at safety?
evaluate his performance at safety?
All this talk of converting CBs to S overlooks the fact that the successful transitions have taken a year or more.

He'd be a very surprising cut imo.
Not center field.
Long term Hill is coming back and you can bet Taylor was drafted to be the closer to the LOS safety. Big Nickel wise who knows now as any plans are probably just to get to game 5 when Hill comes back.
And TT himself feels he is talented enough to make the switch, and he's more than willing to play safety if it means prolonging his career.
That's where the speculation comes from.
Nothing is imminent, barring an emergency.
Remember: if #NYG decide to put Andre Brown on IR-designation to return, can't be done until Tuesday. So AB must be kept on 53 until then.

All these injury settlements will count against the cap starting on Thursday, Sept. 5th.
For example, if the settlement is for 3 weeks, then Sash will have to wait until week 10 to possibly re-sign and play for the Giants. You're not likely to see him as a result of this until the middle of the season---if he doesn't sign with another team first, which is certainly a possibility.

That doesn't mean they aren't trying to swing something, but most of the time, nothing happens.
The motivation for another team to at least give something is that he is still subject to waivers, so a trade is necessary in order to ensure that they get him.
We might be waiting on a restructure to be finalized.
Patterson has completely outplayed austin. The writing was on the wall for Austin the minute they drafted Hankins.
They're not going to carry two young guys who may not play when they could replace Austin with a not-old veteran who clearly deserves to play.
In other words, we got nothing for Shockey.
P.S. The wives/girlfriends of these players definitely are good sources of intel.

* = The Giants will reach an Injury Settlement w/Sash (unless it becomes a grievance, which it most likely will not).
RESERVE/PUP LIST:
12. DT, Markus Kuhn (he will be eligible to return between week 7 & week 13, or he can be placed on Injured Reserve).
RESERVE/SUSPENDED LIST:
13. FS, Will Hill (eligible to return in week 5 after serving a 4-game suspension for using marijuana).
But after week 4, when Will Hill needs to be added to the roster, they dump Painter and only go with 2 QBs if Nassib has made decent progress?
Giants cut David Carr and Ryan Torain. Surprising. RB on the way ...
and Andre Brown I guess
5 lbers and posibly 4
3 Safeties 4 if one is suspended
Maybe we keep all our DL

And give a tip of the hat to Scott. I thought he was dead after that fumble vs. the Jets. He ran hard and like a guy who wanted to keep his job in that Patriots game and it because of that, with the Brown injury, he made the team.
and no, i do not believe this is the 53 the #giants will take into dallas....think other moves to come
If Brown is moved to temp IR, which position gets the extra body?
Also think the Giants add a RB and a Safety before the weekend is up. Can't possibly seeing them being comfortable with Cooper Taylor has their only back-up. And there are better RB options out there to back-up David Wilson.
I expected Scott to make the team. He ran well the other night and he was good on specials last year blocking for Wilson until he got hurt...
Not surprised we are going with 5 WR considering the fact that #6 guy usually never dresses game day..
Not surprised Austin got cut..nor that they couldnt trade him for anything..
I expect Trattou over Tracy and Ojomo.. Ojomo's ability against third string talent late in games never impressed me..
T2? Seriously? That was a no brainer. You're going to judge him based on limmited pre-season games as he works his way back? I think his body of work earns him the benefit of the doubt.
I don't think Scott has much of a future with this team. I see the speed... but I don't see the running talent. He's a walking medicine cabinet, and he will be down with some ache or pain in a very short while.
Not exactly how I would have drawn it up. Emotional day. Great organization. I will miss a lot of people. I Wish the NY Giants the best
And no one can convince me about Scott over any running back. I would take any retired back over him.
I just wish Jerry R. hadn't eaten that legend lock, stock and barrel.
Cost us a fucking second rounder.
I am completely honored and thankful for my time and experience here in New York. I have become a man here.
It was also more than the SR Bowl. At times, he showed excellent talent and NFL potential in college.

Time will tell... but I think right now that Marvin Austin is just NOT gonna do anything special for the Giants.
Do not like this young man's game.
In college, he flashed an occasional brilliant play mixed in with a heavy dosage of getting wired to an offensive lineman...
...wired as in his feet and legs stopping while he looked around the neighborhood to see what was going on.
I don't think he is long for the NFL.
I hope I'm 100% wrong.
Keep at it, bro.
DTs are the toughest position to project in the NFL. I thought his skills would work in the NFL.
He was also hurt a lot which didn't help. He looked much better this yr. It isn't over for him in the NFL.
Austin not working out should not be a knock on Reese. Every team picks guys in round 1-7 who don't stick.
I don't think we are seeing all the cuts yet. I think we will be active on the wavier wire.
...don't pretend that I do.
But I sure knew about Marvin Austin.
...no position in the NFL takes more will power than defensive tackle.
I didn't see that will power from someone who is obviously physically gifted.
I don't think Scott is long for this team.
He also looks good running routes. Eats up yards fast. Can change directions, dip his shoulder and cut. He seems to adjust to the ball.
Zeke Mowatt dropped the ball on occasion early but developed. I don't know if its the number but he's got me thinking of Mowatt again.
I'll say this for Donnell I believe he'll be a very good blocker. That said he'd be one of the 5 worst starting TE's in the NFL if he gets that job.
Our roster clearly has some areas of concern heading into the season. No surprise in the salary cap era. It isn't frustration to honestly evaluate your teams shortcomings.
Perhaps you prefer the ostrich method of burying your head in the sand in denial.
Of course, then we havebthe other LOS . . . Yikes.
Never one to play Ostrich, this team has some significant concerns, but TE is not really one of them, simply because the position is not all that important to the success of the offense.
Now if you want to talk LB, OL and DB depth, right there with you.
'
You want to hit JR for decisions on TEs? How about the fact we had Scott Chandler in camp in 2011.
Doesn't matter, the point is Ballard was taken off the dust heap, this is how the Giants prefer to fill the TE position and it makes total sense in the salary cap era. No one is saying the TE doesn't matter, just that it is a lesser priority to the Giants. That much is undeniable.
And with Brown out, thought TC would go with experience for pass blocking purposes.
Many of us have been predicting it for weeks.
Wont last long - watch
He also can return kicks and punts, which is a need. With Brown out, the Giants really shouldn't risk putting Wilson back there, so they are better off using Jernigan or Scott to do that job.
But also Patterson, Connor, Ross, Mundy, Rivers. Anyone else I'm forgetting?

Can you update the BBI roster page? There's a lot to sort out
Seriously???
I remember Mara and Reese saying in the off-season that changes would be made but IMO 40% turnover seems a little high.
Giants.com - ( New Window )
It has been posted a number of times
Rogers - Saints
Ross - Jags
Teams where there was a dire need for production at their positions.
For every Giants fan that complains about a Barden or Austin, there is a Steelers and Bengals fan that complains about a Mundy and Rivers.
Patterson had major brain surgery and his salary cut upon his return with the Eagles.
If T2 can come back from his third ACL repair job and be productive then God bless him.
Connor had a better player in front of him.
And Jenkins wasn't signed to any small deal. They expect him to produce so I wouldn't put him in the same class of these guys.
Let's not con ourselves, this a cross fingers and your toes and hope for the very best situation because odds aren't on the Giants side.

obviously the image silder did nothing for him.
the caption that said 53 cuts underneat didnt stand out.
the link to the story didnt stand out.
and the only excerpts of a story seemed old, the interview and the patriots recap, etc.
im already a few beers deep, so youll have to catch up
;)

Last years team, with Boley yukking it up on the sidelines as the season slipped away is what this team needs to get past going into 2013
The 53 man roster is clearly identified at the top of the page in both the first-place on the slider and at the top of the News and Notes section.
Give Eric a break fellas

Again, the website (front page, roster, depth chart, salaries page, roster analysis section, transactions section) were all updated within 40 minutes of the official announcement.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
