What do you think? Is asking these 4 to average 7.5 sacks each unrealistic?
I ask because I think that's right about where I think they need to be for this Defense to function the way the Giants want/need it to.
Hopefully JPP is ready sooner rather than later.
I think the DT's should help getting better push through the middle and not allowing the QB's a spot to step up. Pressures are almost as good as a sack they say, but they're still not. Especially in the NFC East, a pressure without getting the sack can become useless & potentially dangerous very quickly with guys like Griffin, Romo & Vick.
Can Tuck & JPP combine for 20 sacks?
Can Kiwi & Moore combine for another 10?
JPP 12 sacks?
Tuck 8?
Kiwi 6?
Moore 4?
Is that asking too much? I don't think it is.
JPP can probably get 30 sacks on his own if his body holds up! :-)
Tuck: 4
Kiwi: 3
Osi: 6
So let's sat Moore gets 6 sacks to make up for Osi's loss, which seems like a fair guess. Can JPP/Tuck/Kiwi combine for 24 sacks after only combining for 13.5 last year?
That's a season defining question. I hope they do and I think they will but it's no slam dunk.
Pressures are nice, but it's an inconsistent stat that becomes very vague in a vacuum.
Eli faced more pressures than any QB in the league the last time he hoisted a Lombardy.
These Giants have been about Eli and his weapons + the DL. If both of them are playing at an elite level at the same time, this can be one of the most dangerous teams in football.
It starts at the top though, this is a big year for JPP. Is he a HOF player like he showed in 2011 or is he just a very good Top 20 defender in the league like in 2012. Hopefully JPP plays great because that would go a long way.
8 from Tuck tops.
About the only one that has upside here is the 6 from Kiwi. You might get more from him depending on how much and where he plays.
Osi: 9
Tuck: 5
Tollefson: 5
35.5 total and a big difference from 2012
I'd like to see them over 40 for the entire defense.
I really think Reese/Coughlin have slanted this roster to have "waves" of fresh D linemen to deal with pistol / read option QBs as well as the potential of Chip Kelly's Oregon style "up tempo offense".
Whether the DEs get double teamed and the DT get more inside pressure / sacks or the DTs draw the double teams and the DEs get the pressure / sacks I really don't care as long as the opposing QBs feel very uncomfortable in the pocket and have little to no time to throw.
(By the way, three of those 4.5 sacks came from Blackburn which I believe is the best total for a Giant LB since Kawika Mitchell's 3.5 sacks in 2007. Maybe we need to rethink this Fewell doesn't know how to create blitz meme a bit)
My point of bringing this up is that if they get close to 30 sacks from all the defensive ends including Trattou, then the Giants will be certain to have a mid-40 sack again.
I'm not as high on Kiwi as some here. I did not think he looked good in the preseason agst the other teams starting OL. I think he gets maybe 6-7.
That's 21. Plus 5 or 6 for Moore.
So 28 total
