JPP, Tuck, Kiwi & Moore Over/Under: 30 Sacks

Motley Blue : 9/3/2013 1:30 pm
What do you think? Is asking these 4 to average 7.5 sacks each unrealistic?

I ask because I think that's right about where I think they need to be for this Defense to function the way the Giants want/need it to.

Hopefully JPP is ready sooner rather than later.

I think the DT's should help getting better push through the middle and not allowing the QB's a spot to step up. Pressures are almost as good as a sack they say, but they're still not. Especially in the NFC East, a pressure without getting the sack can become useless & potentially dangerous very quickly with guys like Griffin, Romo & Vick.

Can Tuck & JPP combine for 20 sacks?
Can Kiwi & Moore combine for another 10?

JPP 12 sacks?
Tuck 8?
Kiwi 6?
Moore 4?

Is that asking too much? I don't think it is.
Sack totals will have a lot to do with opposing offenses.

Washington plays a lot of read option, and who knows what Philadelphia is going to look like. Seattle has Russell Wilson, who runs out of trouble a lot. Oakland appears to be ready to start Pryor, who's a running QB. That's six games where pressures, turnovers and low rushing totals may be more important than sacks.
Easily, as long as they can stay healthy.

Tuck and JPP were both hurt last year.

JPP can probably get 30 sacks on his own if his body holds up! :-)
JPP, Tuck, Kiwi, and Osi last season had 19.5 sacks
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/3/2013 2:00 pm : link
JPP: 6.5
Tuck: 4
Kiwi: 3
Osi: 6

So let's sat Moore gets 6 sacks to make up for Osi's loss, which seems like a fair guess. Can JPP/Tuck/Kiwi combine for 24 sacks after only combining for 13.5 last year?

That's a season defining question. I hope they do and I think they will but it's no slam dunk.
I think
mrvax : 9/3/2013 2:03 pm : link
that knock downs are almost as good as a sack. Pressures are great but getting to the QB and knocking him down will quickly end the read option era.
30
mrvax : 9/3/2013 2:03 pm : link
is about right BTW. Tuck should be healed up and JPP should be better not playing in pain.

I agree. Season defining. Sacks have to get home. Gotta get these QBs on the ground. Taking into account last years totals, it's got to improve. 30 seems to be fair without being unrealistic and I hope to see the over, but I don't know if I could bet that way just yet.

I agree about the knock downs.

Pressures are nice, but it's an inconsistent stat that becomes very vague in a vacuum.

Eli faced more pressures than any QB in the league the last time he hoisted a Lombardy.

Wayyyy under. 15-20 for that group.
You hater!!!!!!!!!!!!

there's way more to rushing the passer than sacks
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/3/2013 2:13 pm : link
but all things being equal, if the Giants had converted 10 more sacks on pressures last year they would've been in the playoffs.

These Giants have been about Eli and his weapons + the DL. If both of them are playing at an elite level at the same time, this can be one of the most dangerous teams in football.

It starts at the top though, this is a big year for JPP. Is he a HOF player like he showed in 2011 or is he just a very good Top 20 defender in the league like in 2012. Hopefully JPP plays great because that would go a long way.
12 from a guy coming off back surgery who hasn't played a down yet?
Victor in CT : 9/3/2013 2:14 pm : link
4 from a rookie who played 1/2 of one pre-season game, got hurt and hasn't been on the field since?

8 from Tuck tops.

About the only one that has upside here is the 6 from Kiwi. You might get more from him depending on how much and where he plays.
Few teams end up with sub-30 in the sack category each season
Go Terps : 9/3/2013 2:17 pm : link
If this group ends up with 15-20, it would be very unusual.
2011 Regular Season

JPP: 16.5
Osi: 9
Tuck: 5

35.5 total and a big difference from 2012

But the team will be over 30 as a whole. Id like to see some additional blitzes that spread ths total around a bit.
The question was about the four DEs
Greg from LI : 9/3/2013 2:29 pm : link
Yes, I think the team as a whole will exceed 30, but I doubt the DEs come close to that number.
They better be over 30 as a whole
Motley Blue : 9/3/2013 2:30 pm : link
25 teams were last season.

I'd like to see them over 40 for the entire defense.

Broncos, Rams, Bengals all broke 50 last season.
Motley Blue : 9/3/2013 2:32 pm : link
11 more teams had 38 or higher.
If they end up around 15, the team might not get to 30
Go Terps : 9/3/2013 2:35 pm : link
That would be really alarming.
I Think There Will Be More Sacks
Trainmaster : 9/3/2013 2:37 pm : link
from the DT position and hopefully more from the DE position as well.

I really think Reese/Coughlin have slanted this roster to have "waves" of fresh D linemen to deal with pistol / read option QBs as well as the potential of Chip Kelly's Oregon style "up tempo offense".

Whether the DEs get double teamed and the DT get more inside pressure / sacks or the DTs draw the double teams and the DEs get the pressure / sacks I really don't care as long as the opposing QBs feel very uncomfortable in the pocket and have little to no time to throw.
Sacks
stretch234 : 9/3/2013 2:40 pm : link
How about consistent pressure on the opposing QB - that is more important and if that happens, sacks will come, INT will come, etc
Keep in mind that the Giants last year
Semipro Lineman : 9/3/2013 2:52 pm : link
had 9 sacks from their Defensive tackles and this year's group looks to be better or at least more constistent. They also had close to five sacks from the linebackers depending on where you place Adrian Tracy or Kiwi sacks. I'll place Tracy lone sack in the LB total bringing it up to 4.5.

(By the way, three of those 4.5 sacks came from Blackburn which I believe is the best total for a Giant LB since Kawika Mitchell's 3.5 sacks in 2007. Maybe we need to rethink this Fewell doesn't know how to create blitz meme a bit)

My point of bringing this up is that if they get close to 30 sacks from all the defensive ends including Trattou, then the Giants will be certain to have a mid-40 sack again.
great post by Osi, Osi, Osi
oipolloi : 9/3/2013 3:15 pm : link
unfortunately, i see JPP getting only around 6 sacks as he works his way back. I think Tuck will have a better season than last but he has never put up really big sack numbers. I think 8 would be good for him.

I'm not as high on Kiwi as some here. I did not think he looked good in the preseason agst the other teams starting OL. I think he gets maybe 6-7.

That's 21. Plus 5 or 6 for Moore.

So 28 total
Under. But the Giants best chance of the defense being good is
BeerFridge : 9/3/2013 3:47 pm : link
over. I kinda don't see that this year. Not the way Fewell runs the D. The Giants work best when they control the LoS on both sides of the ball. But this seems like a bit of transitional year in that regard.

How could you leave out future Hall-of-Famer Justin Trattou?
