No surprise

at all. He'll help out in the second half.
Link?

You sure you're not looking at last year?
I just dont agree with using this designation on a RB
jlukes : 9/3/2013 2:08 pm : link
that, lets face it, isn't that special

OK, so who takes his spot on the roster?
jeff57 : 9/3/2013 2:09 pm : link
If not an RB, better be a LB or S.
Who are the Giants going to add to the active roster?
Jsak222 : 9/3/2013 2:10 pm : link
...
I think this is Dre's last year.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/3/2013 2:11 pm : link
You can't hold on to a guy that chronically misses half-seasons and isn't that unique anyway.
All right, then.
vibe4giants : 9/3/2013 2:11 pm : link
Are you really that surprised? Isn't this what we expected to happen?
whats not to like?
SethFromAstoria : 9/3/2013 2:12 pm : link
what is the other option?
Well
AnnapolisMike : 9/3/2013 2:12 pm : link
He has the longest recovery period of any of the walking wounded and it makes him available for the second half of the season. Who takes the spot it the bigger question for me.
Please note that jlukes doesn't like this move at all

.
arcarsenal : 9/3/2013 2:14 pm : link
I don't have an issue with it. Like I've said since the beginning, I think he suits up and plays Week 10 following the bye.
I think they outsmarted themselves last year
Chaka : 9/3/2013 2:15 pm : link
and learned a lesson for this year

Just use it. You have somebody you can use it on. Might as take advantage. Instead of waiting for somebody who is a better fit and end up not using all year long
we need the roster spot
WeatherMan : 9/3/2013 2:16 pm : link
and the duration of his injury fits use of the designation. This was the expected move, Andre will be back for the second half of the season. Not a bad time for fresh legs in the backfield.
Diehl is expected back as many as four weeks earlier than AB
JonC : 9/3/2013 2:17 pm : link
this move makes sense.
If they don't use it
pjcas18 : 9/3/2013 2:18 pm : link
the Giants are even more limited in terms of roster spots. Diehl is out 4 weeks (prob), they have 3 QB's, and with Brown it was 3 roster spots out of 53 that were 100% wasted.

It was either Diehl or Brown who they had to cut or use temporary IR for to get some reinforcements.

they should just cut Torain or Scot
spike : 9/3/2013 2:19 pm : link
and bring the new back in.

That temp IR spot could prove to be valuable later in the season.
A safety
oldutican : 9/3/2013 2:20 pm : link
You can live with inexperienced back-up RBs, but not with a safety who if forced to play due to injury can give up big plays.
They already cut Torain
jeff57 : 9/3/2013 2:21 pm : link
.
I would have held the spot just in case we lost
jlukes : 9/3/2013 2:22 pm : link
someone else at a more valuable position.
I don't like it either
Jolly Blue Giant : 9/3/2013 2:22 pm : link
We will have injuries in the first few weeks and will be wishing we hadn't used it yet......
Well, I guess if someone else gets hit with an 8-10 week injury
Giantology : 9/3/2013 2:24 pm : link
We'll have to carry their dead weight on the 53 man roster.
Not really
pjcas18 : 9/3/2013 2:25 pm : link
it's 8 weeks out min. if the Giants lose someone THAT important in the next few weeks, and we're talking Eli, JPP, Beatty, maybe Rolle, they're probably not in contention 8 weeks later anyway to worry about it.

they need the roster spot now, so they can get to a later in the season and still have it be meaningful.
The team might hold the roster spot open
Enoch : 9/3/2013 2:25 pm : link
until after week 1, so that they can sign a veteran without guaranteeing all of his salary.
old
JOrthman : 9/3/2013 2:26 pm : link
I don't know if that statement is accurate given our offense, especially when your talking about blitz pick ups.
If you lose somebody else at a more important position
Enoch : 9/3/2013 2:26 pm : link
that's why there are 7 gameday-inactive spots on the roster.
I agree with Enoch's post below

Can't hold roster spot open
Killed the K-Gun : 9/3/2013 2:32 pm : link
I'm sure the NFLPA would have something to say about it.

It has to be in the CBA.
They can bring up someone from the PS
PEEJ : 9/3/2013 2:34 pm : link
for a week
Enoch - so what happens if Rolle hurts his ankle and needs to miss
jlukes : 9/3/2013 2:34 pm : link
a few weeks? Or something happens to Beatty or someone else?

Yes, they can be inactive, but not roster spot.
Not a big fan of this move...
rptl530 : 9/3/2013 2:36 pm : link
considering whoever they sign to take Brown's place is a likely inactive anyway. I'd have rather roll the dice and save it.
Well, I don't think that's the best use of the short-term IR.
81_Great_Dane : 9/3/2013 2:38 pm : link
Because we know somebody's going to get a broken bone or a sprained knee in the first month of the season, and they'll have to just bite the bullet then.

I guess they're thinking the pressure's on, the organization is tired of mediocre records and not making the playoffs, and they need to act with some urgency. Win now. Meaning not just this season, but NOW.
Roster flexibility...

Dont like the move either... too soon, at a position NOT in real need
GloryDayz : 9/3/2013 2:44 pm : link
If they're worried about Scott & Cox's inexperience, should have let Scott go and kept Torain, who had a decent pre-season.
ahem - started a thread on this - took plenty of flak!

Predict Giants' move(s) between now and the Dallas game -
Del Shofner : 8/31/2013 7:03 pm

I predict only one this week, Andre Brown going to temp IR and a safety who was cut by another team today replacing him.
Can't have him eating a roster spot for approx 6 weeks
Torrag : 9/3/2013 2:45 pm : link
The reality is we're probably going to need Brown down the line. We're thin at RB.

Scott doesn't crack this roster if Andre is healthy. That tells you what the team thinks about him.

Cox is still absorbing the playbook and adapting to the pro game.

Hyno just came off PUP himself.

They need an ace in the hole later on if this group struggles. I think it's the right move.

Jacobs!
We
AcidTest : 9/3/2013 2:48 pm : link
need the roster spot, especially at RB. He might be ready to help us as soon as week ten. Ideally, you'd like to wait until week four or five, but most things in life are not ideal.

... but I'v heard they've spoken to the agents of Ryan Grant, Kevin Smith, among others. A vet likely wouldn't be signed until Week 2. #NYG

Ralph Vacchiano @RVacchianoNYDN 30m
I was told not to rule out RB Tim Hightower at some point, either. Giants worked him out this spring. They don't bring in guys for no reason

they can hold the roster
pjcas18 : 9/3/2013 2:58 pm : link
spot open, but if they have less than 53-men on the roster, certain people become "ineligible" for the PS.

This applies only if the Giants have someone on the PS for a 3rd season. I don't know if they do. Ojomo? Broha? Ryan Perilloux definitely wouldn't be eligible.
Not a huge fan of this move either
jcn56 : 9/3/2013 2:58 pm : link
I like Andre Brown, but he just doesn't seem durable enough to justify a roster spot. Even though we're thin at RB, IMO it was better to cut him now and find a decent #2 via trade or waiver wire and save the temp IR designation.
So much for 4 - 6 weeks
UberAlias : 9/3/2013 3:03 pm : link
.
They have 3 rbs on the roster so it better be a S or LB
njm : 9/3/2013 3:12 pm : link
I'm wondering about the health of Tyler Sash? If he were cleared to play would they bring him back? Being cold blooded about it, I don't think he has enough years of service to get him a whole year's salary if he is on the roster Week 1.
Brown is worth the roster spot
mac attack : 9/3/2013 3:15 pm : link
He had an unfortunate injury an an inopportune time. He will be able to play by Week 6 so that gives him 2 extra weeks to rehab. The Giants don't cut guys loose because of an injury that can heal. They are classier than that.
Sash
pjcas18 : 9/3/2013 3:15 pm : link
tweeted he'd be cleared this week and would then sign with another team.
