Giants won't sign a RB before week 1

Josh in the City : 9/4/2013 10:56 am
Person w/in NYG: After trying out 3 RBs yesterday (incl J Dwyer), team going to wait & see how Da'Rel Scott does Week 1 before signing any

That's so they don't have to guarantee a full yr contract
cminetti5 : 9/4/2013 10:57 am : link
If they sign after wk 1 they go pay check to pay check
no brainer
jlukes : 9/4/2013 10:57 am : link
why would we guarantee a full year's salary for someone that might night be on the roster in a few weeks.
The risk is that you could lose someone like Dwyer
jeff57 : 9/4/2013 10:59 am : link
jeff - This is basically a league-wide thing
Optimus-NY : 9/4/2013 11:01 am : link
Even teams that have cap room prefer not to guarantee a deal for week 1. Termination pay eligibility is also an issue. After week 1, it is much less significant.
It's good business sense

not to sign a RB before game 1

But I'd have Dwyer signed to a contract who's effective date is Monday the 9th.
I bet we sign someone and i bet
GMANinDC : 9/4/2013 11:07 am : link
that RB will stay on the roster for the year because there is no guarantee that Brown stays healthy the rest of the year..
I doubt Da'Rel Scott is holding up any plans.
Victor in CT : 9/4/2013 11:15 am : link
I agree,. I would guess the team and the RB's agent
Grandpa : 9/4/2013 11:21 am : link
they are interested in have some sort of "understanding" that he will be signed unless a much better offer is made Monday morning and/or (hypothetically) Scott runs for $150 yards and scores the winning touchdown
if that's true
Andy in Boston : 9/4/2013 11:22 am : link
than this is an opportunity of a lifetime for Scott.
Optimus said this only comes into play with Washington.
wgenesis123 : 9/4/2013 11:23 am : link
So perhaps its an indication that Washington is the guy they want.
another element is any guys we sign now
mfsd : 9/4/2013 11:27 am : link
don't know the offense at all, so even with a quick learning curve it's probably a couple weeks before they can be trusted to handle things on the fly.
The salary guarantee isn't an issue with Dwyer.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/4/2013 11:35 am : link
He only has three accrued seasons.
No team is going to sign
PEEJ : 9/4/2013 11:37 am : link
a player until next week. Unless they're desperate, like the Cowboys ( *Grin* )
It will be interesting to see if they even sign one after Week 1
JonC : 9/4/2013 11:38 am : link
They really liked Dwyer in the draft, and most teams really like Beanie's A-game (which he doesn't always bring). I wonder if they're waiting for reasons other than the money aspect.
Benie Wells on one leg is
LauderdaleMatty : 9/4/2013 11:38 am : link
Better than Scott. They will sign someone after week one and cut Scott. Most teams are going to wait on the guys cut not they would have been signed already.
PEEJ and Blogger are spot on
Optimus-NY : 9/4/2013 11:54 am : link
Guys, I'd like you to notice something: the Cowboys are making all kinds of moves as the game #1 approaches. They are the classic case of a terribly managed team with respect to the cap. It's a ticking time bomb that is quiet now, but will go eventually go off. In 2015, 2016 you'll all see Dallas's roster go to hell. They'll be like the Raiders this year who are in Cap Hell/Purgatory.

The Raiders have 50 MILLION dollars in Dead Money. Not only is Oakland a bad team, they're a bad team with a severely compromised salary cap. That's disgusting. Reggie McKenzie is smartly making them take their medicine this year though, so they can become healthy again. The Cowboys, under the all-knowing cap management skills of Jerruh are headed down an ugly road.
Jerry's waiting
PEEJ : 9/4/2013 11:59 am : link
for the next uncapped year. LOL
The Cowboys are a nightmare
Optimus-NY : 9/4/2013 12:00 pm : link
time bomb waiting to go off.
Just curious, what happened to the

RB from Rutgers that the Giants worked out pre draft? He was drafted by the Redskins, and I don't see him on their roster anymore.
He is on their practice squard
GMANinDC : 9/4/2013 12:11 pm : link
Juwaan something..
please leave Hyno in on all passing downs
andrew_nyg : 9/4/2013 12:14 pm : link
gotta keep the franchise upright until an experienced pass blocker is signed.
GiantsFan84 : 9/4/2013 12:21 pm : link
I feel like I read things like that every year about dallas but they always seem to restructure and do whatever they want to do
GiantTuff1 : 9/4/2013 12:23 pm : link
the Dallas time-bomb is music to my ears.
OP - no shit.
mattlawson : 9/4/2013 1:11 pm : link
optimus laid out exactly how much money the Giants have to spend on last second stopgaps. less than zero.
isnt' there
Scotty9678 : 9/4/2013 1:18 pm : link
that 3 day non contact rule? (or is that only for training camp?) - so it makes sense in that way since at this point they wouldn't be able to play anyway.
Thought you gurus,
oldog : 9/4/2013 1:55 pm : link
guaranteed Scott would be gone.
SBlue46 : 9/4/2013 2:16 pm : link
Is finished
hilary f : 9/4/2013 2:38 pm : link
Cowboys will get a lot of information from the Boz
Beanie Wells on TWO good feet
PeterS : 9/4/2013 2:39 pm : link
is still a pussy.
There is
AnishPatel : 9/4/2013 2:42 pm : link
only so much information a team can get from a cut player of the other team. It's almost useless logistically.
spike : 9/4/2013 4:05 pm : link
should be o n the PS, not the actual roster
I get a bit frustrated with all these
SwirlingEddie : 9/4/2013 4:20 pm : link
roster maneuverings and manipulations driven by arcane rules and contracts. I kind of wish the teams could just pick their best players and go at it.
