Let's try this again: FWIW, Michael Cox - not David Wilson - is listed as the first-team kick returner on Giants depth chart.
With Brown out, the Giants are going to need Wilson to carry the load at RB. Exposing him to a big hit on kickoffs would be unbelievably stupid. Cox showed he can handle the job. Let him do it until he proves he can't.
I doubt Wilson returns kicks. Guy is dynamic, but they cannot chance him getting injured beyond being RB.
Reale01 - you might be right, but it is weird to re-sign a guy just for specials and I never really saw him play specials. Going with only 5 LBs, TC and PF must have a plan for using lots on DL in rotation to keep them fresh to keep pressure on the QB. Maybe the 3-4 is going to be used except they use DE's as the Will and SAM, but mainly as rushers?
Something Like:
JPP - Tuck - Joseph - Jenkins - Kiwi with Trattou and Ojomo filling in as needed?
you can get hurt on any play. Use your weapons. He can change a game, and one game can be the difference between a playoff berth and sitting at home in the winter. Use your playmakers.
there, I'd agree. But Wilson is the only viable RB at the moment.
Anyway, Cox did a credible enough job and he looks like he might break one too. It is nice to have the option.
but there is only one play where all 11 opponents get a 50 yard running head start before hitting you. We need him in the backfield. If we are down late in the game and looking for a homerun obviously its worth the risk, but as an every return guy i seriously hope not. If we lose Wilson Da'rell Scott is the starting RB. And while I think he may surprise some people here, i don't want him to be the number one any time soon
and more that it's just too full a workload for one guy. He's going to get a lot of carries given what's behind him at the moment, handling all those KOs probably isn't the best idea.
this chart shows injury rates on various types of plays up until 2010, so it's before the rule change moving the kickoff up.
The rate of injury on kicks as opposed to typical plays from scrimmage, about half a percent higher.
I get the reluctance to expose the player to risk. It's not that I'm dismissing it. It's a valid concern. But, the guy can change games. You let him IMO
Guys like CJ Spiller, Doug Martin, Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles
and Matt Forte would probably be good kickoff returners too. Why don't they return kicks? Why don't the all starting offensive linemen play on kickoff returns? They would probably be the best blockers. There is a reason that teams use 2nd stringers and rookies to make up their special teams units.
The folks here who want our team to play scared befuddle me. It is a violent sport and sometimes players get injured in a non-contact play. I'll defer to the coaches but hope they play DW as they deem necessary and appropriate.
and Bailey is very good about kicking through the end zone so we are really talking about just a few plays. Save Wilson for when we might need a big one and otherwise give the job to Cox
but Jernigan, when he goes full out down the sidelnes, never seems to outrun the defender. And when the ball is thrown so both have a chance, JJ doesn't come down with it. His quickness is good, but he doesn't seem to make catches in traffic.Hope he proves me wrong.
Good data. All of the injuries are flattening out or trending down, except kick offs which are increasing. I would REALLY like to see DW on kickoffs, punts, water boy...everything. But I think Cox will give us some production and we will be fine.
