If you could bring back 1 coughlin-era player for 1 season

UK Giants Fan : 9/5/2013 7:15 pm
If you could bring back one player that has played under Tom Coughlin for the Giants, as they were in their prime, and they can only play this season (not worrying about salary or anything) who would it be?

I think I would go for Antonio Pierce in his prime, as i think it fills a big need on the team this season, if not him then Shaun O'Hara
Tiki

Tiki (I don't think he'd make the comical comment on this team) - distant second.
Probably Strahan
MookGiants : 9/5/2013 7:18 pm : link
if not him then Kareem McKenzie, a criminally underrated Giant
The guy this team

could really use though might be Shockey if Strahan and Tiki couldn't make it
Strahan, of course.

Barber was pretty friggin' good in his prime and would fill a huge need on the Giants as currently constructed.

Strahan being too easy... Fred Robbins
Kyle : 9/5/2013 7:21 pm : link
We signed Cullen Jenkins hoping he can come close to what Fred Robbins gave us as an interior pass rusher.

Kareem McKenzie in his prime

would do good things for this team.
Ballard or Boss

Injuries cheated us out of their best years.
Strahan is the obvious answer.
arcarsenal : 9/5/2013 7:50 pm : link
Antonio Pierce from the first few years he was here would be a great addition right now.
2005 version

of Antonio Pierce.
Some other guys that come to mind
Giantology : 9/5/2013 7:54 pm : link
Sam Madison - never hurts having a vet like him back in the Secondary. While he may have lost a step, his awareness and understanding of the game was awesome

Derrick Ward - He'd be a really nice change of pace back to pair with Wilson

Hedgecock - Dude was beastly for us.

Kawika Mitchell - We could use a solid LB.

Fred Robbins - Big part of our dominating DL several years ago.
Considering the current depth issues
j_rud : 9/5/2013 7:58 pm : link
how about Gibril Wilson? He was cut by both the Raiders and Dolphins after only a year but they were salary cap moves, he was actually very productive in both slots, recording 129 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 2 picks in Oakland and 93 tackles, a sack, and 8 passes defended in Miami. Problem was Oakland's FO was a mess and overpaid him coming off the Super Bowl, and Miam gave him a deal they couldn't sustain based on his production in Oakland. He's not the first name to come to mind but with 360 tackles, 6 sacks, 19 passes defensed, and 11 picks over 3 and a half seasons he oughta be in the conversation with Mundy and Taylor currently filling out the depth chart.

Dodge. That dude wreaked my blood pressure. It's still damaged from him.

That being said, hmmmm....hmmmm.... a case can be made for all the names listed so far, but I gotta' go Pierce.
I don't think strahan is the right call
Joey from GlenCove : 9/5/2013 8:07 pm : link
We have enough there. I would choose subert or pierce. We are seriously hurting there.
Strahan isn't so much for the Dline play...
okiegiant : 9/5/2013 8:09 pm : link
as for the leadership.

This team needs a leader.
No way
pjcas18 : 9/5/2013 8:11 pm : link
the D-line play too.

On defense a pass rush covers up for a lot of deficiencies.

Strahan was obviously an elite pass rusher, but what a lot of people (outside of Giants fans probably) don't give him nearly enough credit for was his run defense.

he was as good a two-way defensive player the Giants have had since LT.

Nothing is more demoralizing them being run (for me as a fan at least LOL).
The way I look at it
Joey from GlenCove : 9/5/2013 8:32 pm : link
the leadership straphan provides Is important but pierce can provide that to some extent.

Also if strahan is a 10 I think tuck is a 6.5
However I think pierce is a 7.5 and Connor is maybe a 3.

*not using a log scale!
Strahan the obvious choice.
Dave in Hoboken : 9/5/2013 8:34 pm : link
After him Robbins, McKenzie, or 2005 Antonio Pierce.
Strahan
bob in tx : 9/5/2013 8:37 pm : link
then Jacobs
dont forget michael johnson in that 2009 season
mattlawson : 9/5/2013 8:37 pm : link
he actually ranked two spots lower than CC Brown did on on PFF... and was second worst in the entire league.

Think about that, of the 4 lowest ranked safeties, the Giants had a starting pair good for 50%.
It'd be interesting to open up the pool to Coughlin Era Jaguars too
David in LA : 9/5/2013 8:41 pm : link
I'd take Tony Boselli in a heart beat. There were other great players over there like Fred Taylor, Keenan McCardell, and Jimmy Smith. Always been particular to Natrone Means.
Or maybe bc eagle guys too!
Joey from GlenCove : 9/5/2013 8:45 pm : link

Pierce
JOrthman : 9/5/2013 8:46 pm : link
Just because he is such an upgrade over everything we have at LB right now. MS was amazing, but we have bigger issues on this team.
The 2008 version of David Diehl...
JB in NJ : 9/5/2013 8:53 pm : link
Does that count?
I'll take LT
stockton : 9/5/2013 8:53 pm : link
from when Coughlin was the WR coach for the Giants
I'd also add Kevin Hardy
David in LA : 9/5/2013 8:58 pm : link
who was a very good linebacker for Jax.
Strahan
Jerry in DC : 9/5/2013 9:08 pm : link
He was just so good. It's far from the greatest position of need, but with Strahan here, the DL would be so terrifying that it would cover up for the rest of the D.
Stockton with
LauderdaleMatty : 9/5/2013 9:20 pm : link
The win. Strahan of course but I like the Suerbert pick. Leader and honestly one of the toughest SOBs going.

Think this OL could use him?

The 2005 version of Tiki would be a great addition.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/5/2013 10:44 pm : link
Although he and Wilson are about the same size, Tiki excelled at a lot of things Wilson is still learning. They would make a wicked tandem.

The Hall of Fame Michael Strahan wasn't really a "Coughlin Era" player. MS played his best ball under Reeves and Fassel. Under Coughlin, he was still excellent, but had two of four seasons wrecked by injury. Besides, DE is far from this team's biggest need.

2005 vintage Pierce/McKenzie, or Seubert/Snee circa 2008 are all good candidates. And can we put Corey Webster in a time machine?
Strahan...easy
Hades07 : 9/5/2013 10:48 pm : link
Hall of Fame DE in his prime? No question.
Normally, it should be Strahan...
manh george : 9/6/2013 12:31 am : link
but if our LB play ends up as bad as it appears it might, then Pierce might be a greater increment over existing players.

We are also desperate for a third down back, but by definition the number of plays wouldn't be sufficient. Of course, if Wilson disappoints or wears down, then Tiki becomes the obvious choice.
An OLineman
Default : 9/6/2013 12:36 am : link
Preferably McKenzie in his prime.
Gibril Wilson
Blueballz : 9/6/2013 1:35 am : link
that is all.
I was thinking Gibril, too.
Section331 : 9/6/2013 8:40 am : link
He'd cure a lot of ills in the secondary.
Antonio Pierce, easily
Greg from LI : 9/6/2013 8:47 am : link
The upgrade from Herzlich or whichever other clown will start at MLB this year to Pierce is massive.
Antonio Pierce.
Curtis in VA : 9/6/2013 8:51 am : link
Ever since he left the run defense has sucked.
1) Straham
jlukes : 9/6/2013 8:52 am : link
2) Big Kareem
Strahan...
Jan in DC : 9/6/2013 9:03 am : link
or Seubert. Seubert would really really solidify the line and Strahan is a HOF, so its obvious why.
Nik Greison
David : 9/6/2013 9:23 am : link
.
I think the biggest difference maker
mrvax : 9/6/2013 9:38 am : link
would be Tiki Barber. Have him & Wilson split the carries. Or Tiki & Cox with Wilson returning kicks and occasional RB play.
Fun question.
x meadowlander : 9/6/2013 9:48 am : link
Tiki in his prime was the most powerful offensive weapon the Giants have ever possessed. Besides Eli, probably the second most valuable player the Giants had in the last decade. You didn't need a good OL, he'd find the holes.

Antonio Pierce is easily second on my list. Who doesn't miss quality MLB play?

The player that would help the most, not the best player
njm : 9/6/2013 9:50 am : link
Pierce
