But Dallas had two first downs in the redzone. 1st one a nice waggle play for 13 yards. Then the next one they bring all their threats onto the field (we bring in 4 TEs) and throw again for a TD.
How did anyone expect this team to be anything near sharp with how poorly we played in the pre season? The only thing I'm genuinely surprised about is how poorly Wilson played.
This was the first season in a long time that I didn't go into the season wreaking optimism. Hopefully that tune changes soon.
Have ever watched. That includes the Fassel Era and Reeves Era.
Our offensive game plan was terrible from the beginning. We didn't even try to establish the run. Yes Wilson fumbles twice, but it was ugly before that.
Our D actually played well but our offense didn't help them out at all.
We didnt try to get him into a groove. There defensive line was thin, so what do we do let's go out and throw. That makes sense. Wilson needs touches to get into a groove.
keep calling Randle the guy who can stretch the field? He is our 3rd best deep threat after Cruz and Hakeem. I've never seem him get clear behind a defense
Six turnovers is pretty clearly the story, not much else to be said. Thank David Wilson and Da'Rel Scott for this loss, but hey, we saved some money at the position...
I'm sick of listening to this team talk about seizing the moment. Well, they fucked it up colossally tonight. So when they lose this division by a game or so, remember this game.
The six turnovers. The complete garbage way the offense operated to begin the game. The OL suckitide. Losing to this fucking Dallas team. Losing a division game.
Giants worked out Jonathan Dwyer, Beanie Wells last week. Worked out Tim Hightower in June. Ryan Grant, Kevin Smith are available, too. - from Ralph Vacchiano
Their running backs are a fucking disaster right now.
I'm not writing Wilson's career off, but those who have been talking about how he's some type of inevitable monster all teams will fear better pipe down for a damn good while.
You said the same thing at halftime. How was the defense the problem to the point where you are so worried? That side of the ball actually played very well tonight.
Reese keeping Scott over a veteran RB is hard to understand
Scott doesnt turn around for a screen, the first play of the game was a screen to DeMarcus Ware. Horrible game, big plays not withstanding. Look like a bunch of guys who didnt really focus or even pay attention during training camp. Looked that way most of the preseason.
Even a completely average one who gets you 70 yards (and 0 TOs), the Giants probably win tonight. Defense played reasonably well and the WRs were great.
What an utter and complete shitshow at the HB position. Holy SHIT.
They'll sign a vet this week.
^To be fair, if Eli throws one less INT, they might win.
but otherwise played a solid game. Pugh was pretty good. Randle, Cruz and Nicks were great. Eli played shitty early but hung in there and played well at the end. Mundy wrapped up well when we needed him to. JPP had a sack.
Lots of errors but some positives too. We can work out the errors, build on the positives and this team can be very dangerous.
No one can run or protect themselves with this line. It was like a sieve and half of Eli's "passes" (heaves) we rushed even if he did get yardage. His interceptions were stupid mistakes on him too. This game was not Wilson's fault.
And they had a chance to win. Sbitty loss. . . But the cup is half full. The D looks better and if they get the RB situation settled... They will be OK.
he was actually protecting the ball correctly. He's just lacking the strength to grip it, I'm not sure how you fix that unless you tell him to stop fighting for yards and collapse on contact. Teams are going to target it every time he touches the ball.
Holy shit, did some watch this game, Pugh was probably the best OL
The Giants passing attack is as goo as anyone's. The Cowboys couldn't stop it even knowing the Giants had to pass and have no RBs even if they wanted to run the ball.
The D is reasonably solid -- at least when they're not knocking each other out of the game -- at least against the run. Dallas scored 3 points off the first INT. 7 points off the fumble runback. 5 points off the pick-6.
shouldn't be happy they barely beat us...we gave them the
game..5 TO's..our D is pretty sound...needs tweeking..
but O lost the game...our running was badly designed..
KG should have Eli in a hurry up and play action to RB's
they arent power backs w/ this line..Fewel should have
taken out Romo
Is going to be a better version of Manningham this year. However, he should have run up and fair caught the punt that hit McBride for a fumble. Growing pains for a young returner.
3) The DL and front 7 in general played well against the run and tackling.
4) Tuck looks healthy.
5) They were at 5 turnovers and had a legit shot to win. That still says something about this team.
6) Pugh looked good.
7) Not 1 kickoff return against Brown
All that said, I had no doubt Eli was going to win this at the end. This is clearly not a game we should have won, but even with 6 turnovers, it is a game we could have won.
In many facets of the game tonight. Dallas played poorly and could have (should have) really taken us out if the game a lot earlier. I have a feeling it's going to be a very long, disappointing season.
Randle doesn't need to catch it, it was a wobbling duck. What he does need to do is let the protectors know to clear, and the protectors need to quit grappling and get the fuck away from the ball.
Because I am an optimist I will focus on a positive. I was very happy with the interior dline and the run defense. I also thought our secondary played well.
pass protection very good tonight.. Eli came on strong in 2nd half. The wide receivers are awesome. Defense was ok (I hold the offense responsible for 24pts). Secondary looked good, I think. Made some good plays on the ball.. generally tackled well aside from 3 or 4 plays.
has 15 regular season games left with this organization and hopefully 3-4 playoff games. But after that he needs to be cut, he got his ass handed to him again tonight. I'm incredibly appreciative of what Snee has done for the Giants and he's been an awesome lineman for a while, but need to cut bait after the year. He looks close to finished as a starting guard
said this week he had no idea how running game would work
and would have to ad lib...he had no plan or confidence..
we live and die by Eli///KG is a pawn
are u kidding Paul? Wilson doesn't see the light of day
because of the six turnovers is Killdrive's ridiculous gameplan. He didn't go spread until we were down 17 (he always waits till we get behind) and then he did what we and all other coaching staffs would have done from the start spread them and kill them with your 3 stud wideouts. First and goal from the one and he shows you he is going to run power with the formation. For one half of the game he had the out of shape fullback on the field instead of going spread. Oh...and by the way your back (Wilson) is perfect for the spread.
But the fact is we were in this game till the end. That despite six turnovers. A game doesn't make a season. That we were in this game to the end, despite the miscues, speaks volumes for what may come. Remember, our last two superbowl seasons started (I believe) 0 and 1. Let's list the positives: Cruz is still Cruz; Hakeem is back; Pugh is the real deal (despite his small arms); all is not lost at safety; the DTs were solid; Randle showed he can be a third option.
It's a hard loss in that we should have won tonight but for the turnovers. But Tom is not going to let this sit, and this team will bounce back big time. And Wilson will be a big part of it.
So goes the optimist.
Wilson's first fumble was him not protecting the ball properly
granted, he fumbled twice tonight. Both were good plays made by the defense. All night they'd been getting their hands on the ball and trying to wrench it out of the ballcarriers' hands. It worked twice on Wilson, but could have easily worked again the other 4, 5 time i saw it nearly happen. Give some credit to the defense on that.
As for Wilson, tough break for the kid and could be a confidence killer but I think he'll come back from that, if Coughlin will let him play.
You know why Parcells loved McConkey as a returner? He didn't get big yardage but he saved field position and secured the ball. He rarely let it hit the ground when it becomes a live grenade. Randle was the least of the problems and he should have called out fire or whatever, but he still should have run to that ball and not sit back,
He's not ready and may only be a change of pace guy. He was a solid kick returner, that should be his role for now. We need a vet RB ASAP, not sure whose available but they need to sign someone quick. Defense played ok, I wish Fewell would of blitzed more but the defense played way too many plays. We'll find out what this team is made of the next two weeks.
1) On the punt, who's to say Randle didn't warn everyone to clear? He was seen waving his arms to get away, which is usually accompanied by screaming a key word also. I think that was on McBride.
2) I'm more concerned with Wilson's pass blocking than the fumbles.
This team is close to being very good. They have at least 2 and seemingly 3 STUD receivers and a great QB. And the defense actually looked pretty good overall tonight.
Not a stretch to say they're a Willis Mcgahee type signing from being what they always are - a sure 8-8 team which is only a handful of fuckups from being 11-5 or 10-6.
and Dallas scores 36 points. It's very "Giants". Such a weird team. There's always stories and angles for everyone. I don't even know how to classify how the offense played.
Great and horrible at the same time. That's a really frustrating loss. We can certainly recover from 1, but I'm not sure how many games like this we can afford to give away.
Wilson looks like the greatest RB in franchise history
looked his first few years. Lets be a bit patient - he's got serious talent.
But Reese does deserve some blame for not bringing in some more reliable depth at the position, given Wilson's inexperience and Brown's injury history.
Even without a vet RB I think we are the team you describe. This will be like 2011. This team will go as far as Eli will take them if the D is average.
he is a prime cut candidate next year unless he flat out takes a pay cut. They can save over 7 million by cutting him next year, he's not staying at anything close to that number
...was whether Cruz, Nicks and Randle would develop into the three-headed monster they need to be for the 2013 Giants to be a threat. That question was answered strongly in the affirmative. It's overshadowed by the loss - and should be. But if the rest of the team simply stops giving games away, this team could be a tough out.
FWIW, I think they have to stick with Wilson. Too much upside there to settle for a mediocrity like Ryan Torain.
My lord, the excuses made for Wilson are just incredible
Scott is a 7th round pick. Wilson is a 1st round pick, that talked about being a starter and every down back. So far he is becoming the reincarnation of Rocky Thompson. Great on specials but not really great from the LOS. Very similar players.
Wilson missed alot of blocks. He is not a pro football player.
new guys there and one out of position. You need to get a grip.
Eli was sacked twice, so was Romo.
We had a running back that had a fumbling problem for 3 years and fumbled three time against the Eagles in one game. He turned out to be the best running back in Giants history once Coughlin got to him - Tki Barber.
is not the problem..this O w/ sucks...Eli threw into traffic.
No excuse for fumbling but Wilson isnt a power runner
we can score 40 points a game if KG puts a gameplan together
I saw them both play. Tiki had instincts, Wilson has none. It is all the difference at RB. I would love Doug Martin right now. We would have won that game.
I saw a defense that actually got stops when it mattered, as evidenced by getting two stops in the last 5 minutes with the game on the line.
I think the offensive line can be fixed, and Eli showed tonight what he can do with a little time in utilizing the weapons this team has.
If the defense had been as ineffective as last season I would be as down as most of you seem to be. The Giants can score points, and the mistakes, turnovers, should be corrected
I am not nearly as bummed as I have been after other losses. I have no doubt, had Scott the experience to be available for that pass as he should have been, Eli finds a way to score.
More importantly, if the Giants had gone ahead, I actually felt the Giants defense had a good chance to protect a 1 point lead.
Bradshaw fumbled the ball as well. But he would also break off multiple plays. There is a difference with fighting for yardage and giving up the ball vs. wow what happened how did the ball get loose?
Perhaps but I can't come up with a reason not to sign a vet who can come in and likely get them 800 yards while Wilson learns "high & tight" and how to block.
but, I don't see a vet RB making one iota of difference on this team...at least not tonight. That vet would have been Torrain. What would he have done, that Scott didn't?
Wilson doesn't have the arm strength to hold onto the ball
1.Wilson for sure needs to fix issue, however i think he should have been put back into the game. you wanna lose with your best even if its him he loses it for all...scott is average at best...wilson catches that screen IMO
2.Eli looked good, well late in game anyways...the offense as a whole looked out of sync early and often. encouraging though that they were able to make that comeback like they did.
3.LBers are laughable bad, herzluich just gets caught up in the in play, he either over pursues or just gets washed out of the play, we seriously lack a top flight LBer, blame the GM, we added shit this offseason at position.
4.mundy actually looked okay, solid tackler, however two bone head plays from him were one hitting williams as he was on the way to the ground he missed and knocked prince out for a couple weeks i am sure and 2 on the INT how the fuck do you get stopped on half inch line lol...dive the fuck in!!!!!!
5.Rolle is our best defender IMO
6.Dline did okay, got some pressure at times other times looked soft, jpp looked rusty but thats okay, i think jospeh played well.
7. randle hurt us on that punt debacle where ball hit mcbride i didnt see him waving his arms or anytjhing to make our guys aware of the shit punt which will resukt in a shit bounce.
8. however other than that one play randle is a freakn stud, kid looks awesome! we def have 3 legit WRs and can pass with the best of them
9.we could have used andre brown tonight lol...I didnt post when he got hurt, but there was no reason for him to be in that preaseason game...needed reps my ass the guy has been around and has had some success in the league...he would have been carrying ball on 1 yard line after mundy int, he also would have picked uop blitzer that sacked manning on second down of that series.
10.overall the sitch at RB is bad yes but wilson's career doesnt end because oft his...he shoulda been back in this game...the guy has the abilituy to make plays, i think coughlin was hard headed in this situation.
11.its week 1 and we are going to iron out the kinks...overall not a horrible showing and def positive to take from game considering we played horrible had 6 turnovers most leading to points directly and still had a chance to win!
i guess on to the next one!
The Giants still had the ability to win the game and they didnt.. They played the worst ive seen a team play in years and they STILL had a chance to win.. Fix the mistakes and the mental errors and move on..
Torrain would have scrored on that 3rd down and goal from one
intensive efforts to strip him of the ball going forward. He's got a tough row to hoe. I hope that he has the mental toughness to handle tonight and what lies ahead.
McGahee have anything left ...?
The personal foul on the Cooper was an absolute joke .
The defense played decently they were on the field plenty
made some good stops after the turnovers .
Not much touch on that screen pass that careened off
Scotts hands for game. JCN56 well put screw the boys they
aint that good .
Hopefully prince gets back and hats off to TT played a damn good game and will get better . the odds are they were gonna win one and we had to gift wrap it as well .
Cant imagine how bad that locker room must be tonight ..
I know it's been brought up but it defies logic as to how bad the giants are at it, Eli included. That 1st pick should have been thrown into the ground, no excuse there.
with the jumbo packages on the goal line. With this group of players, they're much better spreading it out and just running against less players in a small area. Their lineman don't get a push down there, spread them out and let the RB try to win 1 on 1 battle.
has as much to do with grip on the ball as it does with his style of running. When he makes a initial contact with a defender his natural instinct is to spin his body backward (rather than driving forward or going to the ground).
That spin motion puts extra torque on the ball when a defender has a grip on it during the tackle. That's what I saw today with his 2 strips. Wilson needs to learn how to keep his body facing north as he's getting tackled, otherwise forced fumbles will continue to come easier for defenders.
Should be in 3 wide set all game. When Hyno comes in- its a guaranteed run. Just go no huddle all game. This allows Wilson and Scott in space to use their speed rather than run into 5 300 pounders and pass on third and 15. With that said, mcgahee is pretty dam good in short yardage.
muff is beyond stupid. McBride was ten or fifteen yards from Randle and engaged with his man. That is just a lucky bounce of the ball for Dallas. Randle looked great on punts and if McBride didn't commit a PF just before half they would have had the ball at midfield after a 30 yd return(IIRC).
Barber was a mess in his second season: a pass-catching specialist who couldn't catch a cold. I bet there are more than a few BBIers who booed his drops that year.
Anyway, let's all get out to the Swamp next week and cheer David Wilson's every move - not sarcastically, for real. We need the kid to succeed, and he has the tools.
I had high hopes for Wilson..but he missed alot of blocks and
against DWare. Pleasant surprise.
Amazing how Dallas got the deflection picks, fumbles(even their own) and even the onside rolled to them, and w/o pick 3 likely lose this game.
The TOM is going to likely drop an F-bomb or 2, hundred , at the team meeting/tape review. Paint will melt off walls from blood pressure heat.
I can see John Mara making a trip to the locker room for a statement of 'encouragement'.
Wilson will not stay in the doghouse long as he is the franchise RB, and there is not a reliable vet to replace him. It's an OJT situation for player, team, and fans we all have to live though. This is the Pain in no pain no gain. And it looks like he has learn to get the ball into the 'away' arm; both runs to left, both fumbles in right arm. May have to sacrifice some speed for ABlike 2 arm ball security.
You can't blame randle for the punt. It was a short punt
We have no running game, trading for Ingram would be a big upgrade. The dline was fine against the run but the pass rush was disappointing. Eli passed for 450 yards but had 2 bad picks and another off Scott.. Munday and Pugh were good, but how long will prince be out? Wilson should be returning kicks again. We won't have a shot against Payton if we don't hit him.
Randle didnt wave his arms or anything its his responsibility with mcbrides back turned to say something...mcbride ran right into it...yes it was an unlucky bounce but if randle speaks up mcbride turns other way....they run away from the returner because he sees the football. not bashing randle just stating the truth
Rich has made 9 post so far on this thread, each one
That Wilson isn't ready and for a first round pick, that's inexcusable. I don't care whose fault it is, but something needs to be done about it and soon.
but kept messing up and was a fumbling disaster until Coughlin got there.
Hell I'm as angry as anybody at Wilson's fumbles, but that is correctable.
Not so sure about the shitty play calling in the red zone. I have said it numerous times - spread the D out in the redzone with 3 WRs and get 9 out of the box.
As bad as they played they still were only beat by 5, and the pick six was the dagger.
A head scratcher to start the season with NO proven RB on the roster. No matter how great they think Wilson will be, don't you have to plan for nights like this from a young player? When Brown went down, you had to keep Torrain imo.
I know some of you aren't ready to hear that or don't believe that, but I have a strong feeling about it.
Week 1 is almost never an indicator on how a season is going to go for a player or a team. If Coughlin sticks it out with Wilson I think the Giants will see immediate rewards for taking that chance.
. . . on that note, I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now.
not sure he didn't warn them off, but how do you know which way McBride turns? He didn't see the ball, so how does he know where to run to? Let it go as an unlucky break. That isn't Randle's fault.
To me was once again the lack of a pass rush. Dallas o-line will be one of the worst we will face and we rarely got any pressure. Moore is going to have to be really good at rushing the passer because we have no edge speed to get to the qb. JPP looks about 20 pounds overweight again. He has the bull rush, nothing else. We need more speed on the edges. Tuck rushes better from the interior and Kiwi?
For those who want Wilson to return kicks again, please notice that kick returns are very rare these days.
Does anyone really expect 6 turnovers every game?
And with that, we were still in the game until the last play.
We were always going to sign a veteran RB after the first game to take pressure off Wilson. (and that pressure got to him tonight.)
Coughlin was right to take him out tonight; he was a basket case after the second fumble. (Remember one of them was after he was "down" but lying on a defender and while being held that way had the ball ripped out by gang tacklers.)
He will be fine the rest of the way. Scott also got some needed experience. When Brown Comes back we will have a solid backfield for the Nov/Dec run.
JPP, Hynoski among others are just getting back into the game; Amukamara went out and most importantly the refs in the second half made atrocious calls (I don't usually believe refs purposely side with one side or the other, but after tonight I might be persuaded.)
We do need to add a middle linebacker to back up Connor.
Tonight does not discourage me. We were not going to have a perfect season and even during our Superbowl years we had a few stinkeroos.
...but I don't think this team is bad. I certainly don't think this is a lost season either. We clearly have holes but even with 6 terrible turnovers, on the road, we were in this game until the very end. To me, that says something.
Nicks, Cruz and Randle looked phenomenal tonight.
Furthermore, I personally thought Linval Joseph played very well, and I felt Tuck was more of a presence tonight than he was all of last year.
Lastly, I like Mundy and I like his toughness stopping Dez Bryant short of the stick on that 3rd and 4.
Anyway, frustrating night. RB and LB are issues that need to be addressed.
No rest for the weary - next week it gets even tougher.
If Wilson starts next week isn't that a slap in the face to other RB's
I am really not as pissed as I thought I would be....
I thought the defense played well.. I would have liked to have seen more pressure .... But Dallas didn't really have any huge plays on offense.....big plus compared to last year
Scott played pretty well considering. We suck at screens. Eli is just as much to blame as Scott.... Never any touch on the pass.....I wouldn't mind if I never saw another screen pass again....completely embarrassing time and time again
Team stayed with it and had heart. On top of 6 turnovers, 2 pick 6's a field goal and a touchdown right after the punt mishap...that's 24 points on a platter.... D really only gave up 10 legit points
5 games so far in goaline in the red zone and we get blown off the line....folks its time for something else..... I don't know what....spread it out try rolling the pocket..... We don't have a working power formation.
Bottom line is that this is very correctable.... I really think we could use Jacobs because of two things...his leadership and his experience.
And it wasn't a concern in college or anything. I'm sure it will all work itself out with him. He was just unaware that the Dallas defenders would hit him and try to tackle him. It's all good.
I saw the game he missed 2 but 1 was a big one on the goaline on the 1st sack of eli. most of the protection problems were unfortunately attributed to snee. I think coughlin was wrong for not putting Wilson back in the game, i'm all for sending a message about ball security but the second fumble there wasn't anything Wilson could do 3 guys had him and a 4th slipped in to rip it out. I'm all for bringing in a vet rb for next week but no matter who they bring it he won't know the playbook enough to make a difference so next week its still gotta be a Wilson-scott tandem.
The last 2 interceptions were on eli for bad throws, the 1st one was a great play by Ware. Secondary was great and they will need to be next week as well vs the broncos. DL was inconsistent, I give JPP a pass for thid being his 1st game and was facing a young talented left tackle in Smith. This inability to run on the goaline needs to be fixed asap,we suck at it because our olineman are drafted to be pullers not power guys so lets spread em out down there
and Myers had 7 catches for 66 yards. Our defense played pretty well, even though JPP was exhausted, and our best DB and MLB got knocked out of the game.
That's the end goal to clean it up. But we have issues and cob webs right now. The offense was sleeping all pre season and it carried over. They showed life, but the mistakes killed us. By the time we clean it up, I would hate to see us with a shitty record.
We need to win next week or it would be a hole to be down 0-2.
he would turn away from the Returner screaming get away get away...obviously the returner ran to the potential landing point oft he football...its obviously in front of him yes it bounced left and it sucked we didnt get the bounce but he ran a good 7 yards toward it as apposed to just running the other way or continuing down field
Is this team good enough to bounce back from an 0-2 start?
has practiced 2 weeks total during training camp coming off of back surgery.
Did anyone really expect him to just go out there and play well? He's basically had no training camp, his conditioning isn't there as a result, and he's coming off of back surgery.
It's going to take 3-4 weeks for him to really get in the swing of things
I think a healthy David Baas will help a lot. Not saying he's special, or that he deserves all that money any more than Chris Snee does. But our offensive line doesn't need to be special. They just need to be competent, which is exactly what Baas is.
of Peyton shredding Baltimore, Perry can walk a copy down to Killdrive to give him a couple suggestions. If the Giants went up tempo and utilized 10 and 11 personnel extensively, they could put up tons of points. The still try to utilize a power run game so freaking stubbornly when they dont have the personnel for it.
Eli basically said he saw Ware and was trying to squeeze the ball into Wilson on that very first interception/play. I assumed (as did Collinsworth) he didn't see him.
Snee and Boothe had trouble but the line wasn't that bad
I hate to diss the guy because he has been such a great Giants. But the fact that he was not asked to restructure is complete BS. And no way am I going to believe that his relationship with TC was not a one factor in that decision. Not the only factor but one factor.
Boothe and Snee is A gap. That's fucking bad when guys are coming right down the middle at you. You have a rookie on the right side, so if Eli steps up, which he tried, he got sacked. That's not good giving up pressure A gap.
That's spags's scheme which helped us. Attack A gap, blitz from the slot. We can't have guys pressuring us like that in the future.
is going to bounce when it hits the ground? What says if McBride runs down field, (which is the wrong way by the way) and it bounces that way, what would you say then? There is no way to know which way the ball bounces.
Not coverage or front wise. I am talking in terms of being aggressive in his system. His foundation was built on the 4 man rush with everyone else, collison-funnel-sink.
I saw an aggressive mentality for a guy who relied on the front 4 a lot with the Bucs from what I remember.
Also, it's the guys first game coming from college. I am interested in seeing how he adjusts once he gets the swing of things at this level again.
Not that I expect anything different. Let's see, it was all Wilson's fault that the Giants lost despite:
1) a punt bounced off McBride that resulted in 1 short TD;
2) a pick 6 off the hands of Scott, who apparently wasn't quite on the same page as Eli
3) the 1st INT that was all on Eli that resulted in a FG
4) the 2nd INT, which was likely a receiver's fault for not being on the same page as Eli
That's 17 points players other than Wilson gave up, so there was plenty of blame to go around for the TOs. As mentioned, the ball bounced the Cowboys way all night except for the Mundy pick.
Some people have EXTREMELY short memories. I'm amazed they can remember how to brush their teeth. The Giants lost 34-0 to the Falcons last season, just 4 games ago. That's 31 fewer points than they scored tonight & 34 points they lost by, rather than 5 tonight. A 29 point differential is a great deal shittier than 5. Eli had 165 yards passing that game w/ 2 INTs & 0 TDs, compared to 450/3/4 tonight. I'll take his game tonight as well & it's not even close.
David Wilson single handedly did cost us the game with his play 2 fumbles not punching it on goal failing to block leading to sacks. He was a train wreck.
Time of possession is likely to run against the Giants until the running game perks up, so I'm glad to have those extra veteran bodies. And it was nice to see Aaron Ross and Terrell Thomas challenging receivers. Fingers crossed for Prince's noggin, of course.
Safety could be a little rough until Hill returns, but Mundy looked like he belonged out there, for a guy who was supposed be a backup.
Then there's linebacker. Oh dear. The good news for next week is that the Giants will be in nickel most of the game anyway (more Jacquian Williams, less Mark Herzlich). The bad news is, they tried that against Peyton three years ago and got blown out.
your # 2, the Scott interception TD is on Wilson too, because his bad play put him on the bench. Scott should have been on the bench for that play, but Wilson was because he sucked tonite. Wilson had all the reps catching those short passes, not Scott.
David Wilson gotta stop.....question for all u know-it-alls. Did David Wilson all the sudden cause our screen passes to suck....as well as Eli played tonight,3 of those turnovers were his fault....
That last screen pass was all on Scott and the second INT was a typical Giants' miscommunication, where we'll never really know who was at fault, outside of just pointing the finger at the system seemingly promoting that sort of thing far too often.
They all do, and almost every time, fans think it's an awful fumble. BUT, to me, fumbles inside of your own 20, and inside the opponent's 20 are the killers. That was at least a 10 point swing on those 2 fumbles tonight. Just brutal.
Doesn't mean he's a bust, and of course he's our starter. But those were ghastly tonight and were the biggest contributor to our loss.
I like David Wilson a lot too, but blaming him is a very reasonable response to this loss. More importantly though, so is being very, very concerned about what kind of player he'll wind up becoming.
I'm really hoping for the best. Not only because I'm a Giants fan, but because I really like that guy. I can't imagine being in his shoes right now.
...Eli was 2011-type terrific, despite fairly constant pressure. Ultimately, this game was a lot like the Seattle loss that year, or the previous losses to Philly where fluke fumbles by Eli killed Giant rallies. When you put yourself in a hole that leaves no margin for error, one bad play can kill what looks like a great comeback. Even Eli Manning isn't exempt from the dangers of walking that kind of tightrope.
Randle runs the post, but his man sat in the flat, therefore he needs to be looking for the ball since he is right in the open hole. Randle doesnt look for Ball. - ( New Window )
Can u explain how Eli can't be blamed we he said he tried to get the ball around ware and there was not an ounce of touch on that pass to Scott? I will look at the other but that ball looked like it zoomed well over jerigan's head. If at screen had touch it just falls to the ground. When is there ever touch on an Eli screen?
The second was on Randle. Click my link and find Allens INT, you will clearly see Randle not looking for the ball.
And 3rd INT is solely on Scott. Its a timing play and he doesnt even get his head around. Eli didnt throw it 100 MPH. Lets be honest. It was a flick. He wasnt ready because hes a 3rd stringer and his timing was off.
Jernigan is the one leaping for the ball. You're right that Randle isn't looking for it, but when you have two WRs in the same space, something went wrong.
In 2007 when we lost to Dallas Week 1 the defense was BRUTAL. In 2011 it was bad turnovers combined with bad defense. Both of those years worked out pretty well.
Obviously the wheels can still come off too.
I just think that tonight's debacle is reversed next week if Big Blue can beat Denver, and I think they can.
Like many have already said, there is reason for hope...
Jernigan put his hands up to catch it.... I thought there was another angle in the game that showed it better... But it looked like randle was bracketed under and over
Long before Scott, long before Wilson,Eli has been embarrassing on screens. I understand timing and that nature but this is an on going low point in the offense. I love Eli but we are very Quick to point at everyone else because I think we like to give him the free pass because he is Eli but I do respect your opinion.
I think it's more fair to say that second one was a team or system INT
than trying to force it on Eli or Randle (or any player) because we don't know exactly what was going on there other than they were all on the wrong page.
It was just one of those plays that this offensive system is prone to featuring, unfortunately.
This myth that he's never been able to throw to RBs is annoying. He didn't start not being able to until they took away his RBs that were actually good pass catchers and replaced them with an awful receiver in Jacobs, a so-so one in Bradshaw, now a generally terrible Scott, etc. and the OL started to lose its powers. That's not a coincidence.
Guys. It was only the first game of the season. We won the Super Bowl after losing the first two games. Wilson will be fine; Coughlin will get him over his fumbling. I worry more about his pass blocking. Eli was good, and the defense seemed much improved over last year. We lost tonight after six turnovers and still almost won. We will be fine.
I certainly have no problem being critical of him when I feel he or the discussion deserves it, but other than that first INT, which was indisputably all on him, he played pretty damn well tonight and was a few bad breaks away from having another epic comeback on his pelt.
He plays at the overall level he played at this game consistently, the turnovers will be cut back and he and Nicks/Cruz/Randle, problematic RBs or not, are going to carry this likely otherwise mediocre team to 10 wins and the playoffs this year.
- Eli used to throw a lot of picks because Shockey ran the wrong routes.
- TC saved Barber's career by getting him to stop fumbling.
- Perry Fewell is completely inept.
- Gilbride's red zone playcalling is asinine.
Well, the last 2 are actually true. The first 2 were always ridiculous. Eli's first 2 picks were inexplicable. TC and Jerald Ingram may have showed Tiki Barber how to properly hold the ball, but it takes talent and hard work to apply that knowledge to game time when actual players are trying to rip it away. Since Tiki left, Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, and now David Wilson have been chronic fumblers.
Positives...
- WR position: So I guess Hakeem Nicks really was holding back this preseason. He looked fabulous. Cruz let a ball hit him in the face and outside of that was dominant. Randle finally was able to show his talent during a meaningful game. Claiborne and Carr really hurt the Giants last year. Tonight, they got their asses whipped.
- Heart & Effort: This team could've easily withered, died, and just let the Cowboys beat their asses and then gone home. Instead, they fought to the very last second. I have to give them a lot of credit for that.
- Individual defensive players like Rolle, TT, and Patterson played very well.
Negatives...
- This team embarrassed themselves on National TV with their mistakes and generally sloppy play. I saw a lot of sloppy play around the league on Sunday (new practice rules, young players, etc.), but NO TEAM looked that bad with the exception of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- The LBs still stink, despite Paysinger not being totally awful. Herzlich is just not an NFL caliber player, yet he's getting tons of playing time after Connor got hurt.
- The offensive line was a mess. Eli had to scramble on damn near every play. It was as if they've never seen a stunt before. Brewer looked particularly bad at times. I thought Pugh screwed up a lot, but later came to realize that was Brandon Myers and he literally cannot pass protect at all.
- David Wilson: The rarely invoked ESPN "C'Mon Man!!!!!!!!"
It was one game, but the "one game"(s) start to add up quickly in a short season. I expect to see excellent effort against Denver. But the execution and actually winning the game, who knows.
What a debacle! However belive it or not there were some bright spots though...Eli, with the exception of the first INT threw the ball pretty damn good. The first INT was all Eli, he's gotta get that ball over Ware. The second one Randall never got his head around. I watched that play in slow mo and he just absolutely did not even glance back at Eli.(HuH!!!! YOU RUN A PASS PATTERN BUT DON'T LOOK FOR THE BALL????)Wilson has got to keep it high and tight in traffic. He is gonna be a target now by other teams for a longgggg time. Giants have got to find a short yardage back or it's gonna be a long season. Gilbride and Fewell just are not very good. There play calling is atrocious. PERIOD!!!We also need to crank up the pass rush, Romo got hurt, and we should've turn the dog loose...No pass rush , no victory..it's has been, and always will be the engine that drives the NY Giants.NUFF SAID
I can't say I was surprised to see the Giants play such a sloppy game. They sure weren't the only team to do that and it's what the NFL is now. Much fewer practice time, much more roster turnover. The level of play across the league was embarrassing yesterday.
As I get older the games get more frustrating to watch. Everyone who follows the Giants knows they have no money to upgrade the OL or the LB and those units are very much below league average. More than anything that's what decided the game last night.
The Giants have a lot of money tied up in Snee, Baas and Deihl and they got nothing from any of them last night. Snee could not block #54 and he looks shot. The other two didn't even make it to Dallas.
On defense there is no excuse to allow the TE to kill them year after year. I know they were concentrating on WR's and did a great job but #58 can't play and he should never be allowed to be matched up on the TE. I know he's a backup that was on the field because the starter was hurt but the result would have been the same if the starter was matched up the same way. That's on the staff. The Giants have better LB options to take the TE and they let Dallas have that match up way too much. It cost them 2 TD's.
Give these guys some time to jell together. Leave Pugh as a starter and have Deihl strictly as a sub. Once they get coordinated together the running game will improve dramatically. The defense will improve as JPP gets more reps
and rid of the rust
Have you noticed that it's difficult for anybody to stop Cruz, too?
Great players make plays. Asking a Ryan Mundy or Dan Conner to defend him is laughable. All-Pros like Patrick Willis and Bowman have trouble with Jason Witten.
Tommy you can't zone him but you could man up on him
We need Andre Brown or some RB who has half an instinct to block and play without fumbling. When Andre went down last year and Bradshaw was hurt, Giants lost. Same shit this year. Forget his fumbling, Wilson's blocking is abysmal.
This one shouldn't take a long time for people to figure out.
You give the football away 6 times, you're almost certainly going to lose. It's simple. That's just how it goes in this league.
I haven't even read through anything... but I'm sure a ton of BBI is blaming the defense even though the offense gave the ball away on the 1st play from scrimmage, committed 2 turnovers that were run back for scores and were given the ball on the 1 yard line off the Mundy INT and did nothing but move backwards and kick a field goal and turn the ball over 6 times overall.
The offense showed its potential.. we had no business even being in a game like that.. but when you can score as quickly as this passing game can, you can keep it close. Unfortunately, close wasn't enough and yet another backbreaking turnover pretty much sealed our fate when we had the ball with a chance to take the lead.
Coughlin should be livid.. this game was the kind of disaster you should never see from a team he coaches. Inexcusable to play THAT sloppy.
Obviously the running back position has become a major problem. Not just because of the fumbling but because of the poor blocking. We're going to have to sign someone and do it quick and hope they can help.
On a positive note.. I thought despite being put in bad positions over and over again, the D did about as good as you could realistically have expected them to and I think it's safe to say that Nicks was holding back a bit in the preseason. A healthy #88 and #80 should do wonders for us.
The OL needs to be a lot better and the front 4 on the defensive front need to generate more pressure. They shouldn't have been stoned at the line by the guys Dallas had in there for so much of the game.. but they did come up with 2 huge sacks late in the game.
Overall, just really fucking disappointing to lose a game like that. I expect a better effort on Sunday. Everyone can say the Broncos are going to annihilate us... I think it'll be a good game.
I thought the defense played well, all things considered.
believe it or not. People were high on the defense. Couple easy 3rd down conversions (the blown assignment on the blitz when it was 3rd and 11 and no one covered Witten somehow?)
Wilson, Scott, and Gilbride deserve most of the blame.
With our offense i'll sign for that every week. 6 fucking turnovers? It's a miracle the giants were even in this game to begin with, and actually came very close to pulling off another miraculous comeback. They NEED another RB, wilson is not ready and scott would've been cut had brown not gotten hurt.
One of those 2 players were supposed to cover him and both rushed the passer.
I was pleased overall, though. And hopefully the "all Fewell does is play 10 yards off" crowd paid a little attention because we played up on the line a whole lot last night.
The game plan was pretty clearly to not let Dez Bryant beat us and they did a good job of that.
Yeah, some of the conversions were frustrating but honestly that's just the NFL.. it's gonna happen, you can't stop them all. When they needed to get the offense the ball back late in the game, they did it twice... unfortunately, we daggered ourselves on the pick 6 off Scott and that was it.
They were ok. It was a mixed bag - DTs and CBs looked very good. Safeties - Rolle played well, Mundy stinks, Cooper Taylor doesn't belong on the field right now. The DEs were a major disappointment. If you want to give JPP a mulligan since he missed preseason, that's fine, but Kiwanuka did next to nothing and Tuck only generated pressure when he was playing tackle.
of positives. The O basically gave this game away.
How many teams are still in a game after five turnovers? The biggest problem on D is the lack of coverage ability of our LBs. This also affects our ability to use them on blitzes. Dallas was able to blitz their LBs regularly because they can cover in space. They don't need to keep all three back to do so. Their LBs are also effective at fill the gaps on the DL to shut down the run.
I agree with those who said that Snee is having a lot of problems in pass protection. It's only one game, but age and injuries seem to have robbed him of the lateral mobility needed to be effective in pass protection. He's here this year, but like DIehl should probably be gone after the season. I thought Beatty and Pugh were very good.
Wilson had to be benched last night, but we can't give up on him, and not merely because we don't have any other options. He has a lot of talent, but his fumbling was a problem at Va. Tech. One would have hoped that the coaches would have solved it by now. Everybody in the league is going to be ripping at the ball at least until the end of next season, and that will affect his running style. I'd like to see Cox get some carries.
I was against bringing Jacobs back, but I think we should at least take a look at what he has to offer. At least he can pass protect. Wilson still seems to be lacking in that regard. The bottom line is that we don't have a complete back on the roster, and that tips off the defense to some extent about what we are going to do.
The DL, WRs, and secondary were excellent. Eli was erratic, but made some plays.
But, you really get better by playing in real games - I think they should be okay this year.
Turnovers at the worst possible moments were the main culprit. Fumble within the five yard line, Eli basically hands the ball off to Ware on the 1st play of the game. And, the int that was a pick 6 - that's basically 17 points right there.
Guys like Witten and Romo are going to make plays.
They held them in the game, didn't allow a TD after the Ware pick, almost scored one themselves. If you told me that they would hold Dallas to 87 yds rushing, 269 passing and 21 points (legit points that is) I'd have said they win going away.
When I went to bed last night after the game I was pissed...
and still am to a degree. But none other than Mike Greenberg, of all people, actually brought up a good point that made me feel a bit better. He said the team gave up the ball 6 times and yet almost won the game. The Cowboys scored at least 17 points directly off of turnovers (2 returns for TDs and the FG off Eli's first pass of the game...maybe even 24 including the ST gaffe which I believe led to another TD) and the passing game at least seems to be clicking finally. Not to mention, considering the amount of TOs the team had and where, I thought the defense played pretty well.
I feel better about the team now, after sleeping on it and hearing the perspective of a non-Giants fan in Greenberg. We just need to get a vet RB in here to help Wilson out. The RB group single-handily lost that game for the team if you ask me. No other group...whether on the Giants or the Cowboys...had a bigger effect on the game.
The team didn't quit and was in a good position to actually win the game despite all the turnovers. Also, every single bounce went Dallas's way last night. If anything, Dallas should be worried that they didn't capitalize on the early Giants mistakes and jump out to a big lead.
i said before the season that if webster and tuck got back to form, this would be a very good defense. they played their asses off last night. the one knock i have is the pass rush through the first 3 quarters. to give up 331 total yards and hold a team to 5-15 on third down in 37 minutes on defense is impressive, especially against this cowboy team which has the potential to be pretty explosive (see romo's 4,900 yards last year). anyone who is placing even a small blame for this loss on the defense is insane. yes, their pass rush could have been better, but ultimately they did the job both against the run and the pass.
Was the play of LT Will Beatty. I haven't seen many comments about him but I think he did a hell of a job against Ware despite the fact he was usually left to block him without any help from a TE or RB.
agreed on beatty. he was steady. ware had a few pressures and obviously the pick, but that was not attributable to anything beatty did wrong. ware is going to get pressures against any tackle in the league so yes, i was also impressed with beatty.
AB had huge fumblitise issues, Eli does have an occasional bad game but until now never that atrocious. As good as Eli is, he also has bad games as evidenced by last night, that is fact, not a slam on him, well, yes I'm pissed! Regardless, the D is vastly better than last year and all you need to do is look at time of possession, our offense couldn't give the D breaks, period. Hynoski didn't block very well, DW was being gang tacckled and held upright while they ripped at the ball and the OL blocking was poor due to injury subs. Before everyone screams for a new super RB which we can't afford, realize Scott has upside and the rook, Cox is faster and stronger than Brown ( I realize he has to prove he can protect Eli but he can't miss blocks worse than Wilson on that one sack). Monday night will tell us where we will be next January! JMHO>
I'm sorry but Eli was surgical running the hurry up
He always seems to excel when he is on the line calling the shots. Just like his brother. I'm not saying that we need to stick to it all game, but we need to mix it in a lot more. We just can't wait until the 2 min drill or when we're down 2+ scores.
The third can't be put on him. To say he was horrible last night?? Maybe a slow start, but heading into half time he was and the second half he was dead on.
It is not just having 6. They had 2 D touchdowns and started drives on the Giants 15, 16 & 48. The field position and 2 defensive TD's are so hard to overcome
and it's up to Coughlin and the staff to coach him up without killing his confidence. he's a talented kid. I'd rather Cox get some touches over Scott. Much more upside.
Agree with the more rational voices on this site about the positive play of the D and the ability of this team to fight back.
Dallas stinks. Their D gave up almost 500 yards despite a huge advantage in time of possession.
I just don't understand our red zone play calling.
I struggle to think of many worse openers during my lifetime. Id rather lose 35-0 like we did on opening night in '95 to them than turn the ball over 6 times and lose a heartbreaker we essentially gave away. What a shitty morning. And now we get the Bronco offense possibly without Prince staring down the barrel at 0-2
The main positive I take from the game is that Cruz looks healthy off the heel and Nicks looked the best he has since the Tampa game last year. If we can move the ball this easily through the air, this is our division. But what a fucking shitty night last night was
you aren't going to get much pressure if the other team is content to throw the ball 5 yards down the field. I think Romo averaged less than 6 yards an attempt, which is pathetic. The Cowboys were obviously concerned about their ability to protect the passer (and rightly so from the number of times he was hit playing nickel and dime). The couple of times they tried to go down the field, Romo paid the price.
But the defense played well, especially our interior line. I thought they got a good push and disrupted the Cowboy offense. Manning had some big throws, although the interceptions were unforgiveable (the last one was horrendous!)
Any doubls about the health of Cruz and Nicks were put to bed very quickly. And Randle continued his strong play in the preseason. Meyers, after a first quarter drop, contrbuted and became a reliable option.
But, all things considered, after turning the ball over five times, we still were at midfield, with two minutes left, and a final score 31-30 not a stretch of the imagination. We were ALL thinking that. The last pick was about as deflating as one could ever be. The comeback was cut short.
Reminds me of 10 years ago when the Redskins caused "funbles" by holding up the runner until they could strip the ball away. The league then ruled that the play was dead when "forward progress has been stopped". This seemed to have taken care of the problem until last nite., when Wilson was held upright til the cowboys could strip 8the ball away from him.
This was not a fumble. the whistle should have been blown when his forward progress had been stopped.
Coughlin should have thrown a flag, instead of obviously blaming DW for the " fumble".
they'll let us in anyway because we had 6 turnovers in the first game and only lost by 5 points! Fucking pathetic performance. I don't see any positives coming out of a game like this
featuring 3-100 yard receivers in one game (a franchise first), and the defense playing the way they did despite being run ragged, you're just being emotional.
Maybe you would have preferred a repeat performance of last year's atlanta game. That would have been more pleasurable.
They can't protect Eli AT ALL, and they gave our backs no room to work with. Brewer sucks(sorry Anak), and Baas needs to come back, so that Boothe can slide back into his spot at Guard. Pugh looks legit at least. Beatty played very well on Ware for most of the night.
I was at that game here in ATL and it was so much worse.....everyone needs to calm down and see that the turnovers were what lost us the game....but still we almost won it.... This stuff is very correctable.....we cut down the turnovers and time of possession becomes more in our favor.... And our D still did a good job even though they should have been gassed.
Dallas didn't play much better and the Giants had a real shot at winning the game in the 4th quarter, except for one botched screen pass.
I still am not sure who is to blame for that - Eli or Scott.
Let's see what happens tonight. If you think one game is so important, then tonight may show us who the Division winner will be and we won't have to play the rest of the season.
I love how my Monday has been so fucking brutal. All because of the first game of the regular season. Summer was good but it's football season now and I'm going to love every second of it, including like right now where I both love it and hate the shit out of it.
6 turnovers with an embarrassing performance by Wilson
There's not much to say about Wilson. He was about as bad as you could be. He missed blocks and put the ball on the ground twice. He's the NFL's joke of the week and all of us Giants fans are going to have to take it until he proves himself worthy of the starter spot. The good news is, he IS a talented player. He just needs to prove it. I still trust the kid and love his potential but I need to see some results.
But I gotta say, I'm EXTREMELY excited about this team's offense. Eli had his down moments but looked great last night when the team needed him to score in the 2nd half, and our WR unit played fantastic. Nicks/Cruz/Randle all played strong. If David Wilson decides to show up, this offense has a ton of explosiveness. Hopefully Wilson shows up.
The defense did a commendable job. They'll have a tougher test next week against Peyton, hopefully they are ready.
A brutally sloppy Week 1 loss + a loaded Week 2 opponent. We're staring 0-2 right in the face but I'm actually not too worried yet.
6 turnovers for the offense + leading rusher with 23 yards. And yet I was still impressed by the offense. If this running game can get going this is an offense with elite potential.
goes to the veteran QB who hit Ware with a screen on the first play, threw a second interception shortly after, didn't show any imagination or seem to know which of his pllayers were rookies, which veterans, threw a bullet at a rookies back in the clutch, and wouldn't tackle to stop a pick six. Shows some talent, but what a wild man. My great game in trying circumstances game ball goes to the whole defense. My give me a break protest goes out to the refs, (when is roughing the kicker not roughing the kicker, and the Linval Joseph crawl-push roughing the passer, and a few more), and to the breaks (I know we owed Dallas the finger out of bounds from last year),since every time (but one, the Amuk deflection) the ball went up for grabs they got it.
Scott avg per carry, 4.6 yds, total 23. Scott 5 receptions 51 yds, total ydg 74 yds, late replacement for D. Wilson. DeMarco Murray, 84 total yards, Dallas starting running back.
Eli cant throw it, never has been able to. What a shit of a play that must have been scripted 2 weeks ago during the preseason. That is on Gilbride. Please let our passing game set up our running game. Use our 3 top weapons in Cruz, Nicks and Randle then when they drop 8 let Scott or whoever we pick up go up the middle for 5. Our O-Line cant run block very good, they need to pass block better. Thats why I hope who ever we sign at RB can pass block bc Wiolson had some epic fails and whiffs trying to protect Manning. Dont use the run to set up the pass. Switch it around like almost every other team in the NFL has.
Look at the good teams...do they have great RB's ?? NO. Broncos. no. SF, yes, but they pass first and then use Gore. GB. no. New Orleans. no. Last night all Dallas did was pass. Romo had like 35 attempts by half.
We can do the same thing. Let the running game come to you after your WR's blow the casket off the D. When they start using Nickle and dropping 8, then run the ball.
Passing plays to set up the run. Passing plays to set up the run.
Passing plays to set up the run. Passing plays to set up the run.
Nicks was catching everything his way. Surprised they didnt go deep to him more. Cruz is playing lights out. And Randle is emerging as a very good WR. All had over a 100 yds each. Let those guys set the tone. Then when opposing D's get pass weary, we run up the middle.
It seems Gilbride tries too much to use the run to set up the pass. With our RB issues and O-Line issues lets make our 3 top weapons set the tone. They will. Eli isnt going to have a core group of Nicks, Cruz, and Randle with a pass catching TE like Myers again after this season. Lets start burning teams to open up games.
Why wait til the 3rd QT to start throwing TD's and having Eli throw it all over the field.
The run will come. We need to be more of a team that opposing DC's need to say we must stop Nicks, Cruz, and Randle to even have a shot at winning. Our D-Line needs to step up too. We should be getting pressure every single time the QB drops back. If the D-Line and the O-Line can play to their ability and Gilbride lets Eli use his top 3 weapons to START the game, I think it would lead to a refreshing 1st half of football. Let the run come. Every team is a pass first team besides a few now. I know in the 90's it was the other way around. But let Eli havea monster year. Hes going to put some real scary numbers if they let him start games by coming out and using Nicks Cruz and Randle.
Thats good play calling.
This was the first season in a long time that I didn't go into the season wreaking optimism. Hopefully that tune changes soon.
Our offensive game plan was terrible from the beginning. We didn't even try to establish the run. Yes Wilson fumbles twice, but it was ugly before that.
Our D actually played well but our offense didn't help them out at all.
Positives
Nicks
Cruz
Randle
And in my opinion PUGH had a fantastic night regardless of what happens here
C'MON ELI
LETS GO
TC/Reese fix plz.
Wilson was an embarrassment.
Eli did his best, but he only could do so much.
OL is a disgrace.
This team has a long, long way to go.
On the bright side, the defense looks improved.
I'm not writing Wilson's career off, but those who have been talking about how he's some type of inevitable monster all teams will fear better pipe down for a damn good while.
too bad we have Denver next week .
Can't remember a worse game.
1st and goal from the 9. O points.
1st and 10 from the 50, down 6 with 2:00 - INT
What do they all have in common? The ball taken out of Eli's and our receivers hands.
Ruben Randle is a stud
NIcks and Cruz are studs
Pugh was very solid
Defense played welll
Cons
Rueben Randle
Scott
offensive line sucks
It's going to be fun watching Garrett struggle to win 8 games this year, only to be further eviscerated week by week until Jerry cans him for Chuckie.
What an utter and complete shitshow at the HB position. Holy SHIT.
They'll sign a vet this week.
Lots of errors but some positives too. We can work out the errors, build on the positives and this team can be very dangerous.
Stop making a fool of yourself, dep.
They had the right call on, Scott didn't execute. That's on Scott and no one else
They have to prepare for Denver.
We can't control a game to save our lives.
He made the critical error in the clutch that cost us the game. Up until that point, he also missed several assignments in pass protection.
I think they play well next week.
I actually thought he played well in pre-season, was surprised he was cut
Bring in a veteran rb.
Defense was bend but don't break, and was impressive in the second half. Gonna need to step up for next week. We need Prince!
Tuck at least looked more active I thought too.
JPP looked rusty. Kiwi looked ok.
Wilson was horrendous & probably cost us the game tonight himself.
The D is reasonably solid -- at least when they're not knocking each other out of the game -- at least against the run. Dallas scored 3 points off the first INT. 7 points off the fumble runback. 5 points off the pick-6.
game..5 TO's..our D is pretty sound...needs tweeking..
but O lost the game...our running was badly designed..
KG should have Eli in a hurry up and play action to RB's
they arent power backs w/ this line..Fewel should have
taken out Romo
We kept them off the board, but this was all on the offense and the comedy of errors.
2) Randle is a legit #3
3) The DL and front 7 in general played well against the run and tackling.
4) Tuck looks healthy.
5) They were at 5 turnovers and had a legit shot to win. That still says something about this team.
6) Pugh looked good.
7) Not 1 kickoff return against Brown
All that said, I had no doubt Eli was going to win this at the end. This is clearly not a game we should have won, but even with 6 turnovers, it is a game we could have won.
1) Block
2) Catch a screen
3) Not fumble
That is all.
He's a terrible running back right now. He had to leave the game.
I just don't get why Torain was cut. I don't get it at all.
At the end, the team played pretty good. Maybe this was what they needed. A cold hard slap to the face.
Next week we'll see. I wouldn't be giving up on anybody yet.
hard to ignore the running back play tonight...
they gave up <5 ypp
1 was the muffed kickoff and wasn't contested.
2 were Dallas fumbles. Cowboys recovered both
3 were Giants fumbles (including the punt karoom). Cowboys recovered all of them.
1 was the onside kick. Dallas recovered.
Could be hustle; could be awareness. But it's also a hell of a lot of luck in the random bounce of an oblong ball.
I'd roll the dice on Dwyer all things considered. I don't know about McGahee
and would have to ad lib...he had no plan or confidence..
we live and die by Eli///KG is a pawn
The problem was the fumbles more than anything else. And that was a bad pass by Eli to Scott.
Hey they will learn from today. I'm actually calm. They did not give up.
It's a hard loss in that we should have won tonight but for the turnovers. But Tom is not going to let this sit, and this team will bounce back big time. And Wilson will be a big part of it.
So goes the optimist.
Just ... wow.
As for Wilson, tough break for the kid and could be a confidence killer but I think he'll come back from that, if Coughlin will let him play.
6 turnovers. That's embarrassing.
Wilson should be cut
2) I'm more concerned with Wilson's pass blocking than the fumbles.
Not a stretch to say they're a Willis Mcgahee type signing from being what they always are - a sure 8-8 team which is only a handful of fuckups from being 11-5 or 10-6.
This is not the jaguars, Jesus...
Great and horrible at the same time. That's a really frustrating loss. We can certainly recover from 1, but I'm not sure how many games like this we can afford to give away.
But Reese does deserve some blame for not bringing in some more reliable depth at the position, given Wilson's inexperience and Brown's injury history.
FWIW, I think they have to stick with Wilson. Too much upside there to settle for a mediocrity like Ryan Torain.
Yeah. Lets cut a 2nd year first round RB because he's had a few hiccups. Go to bed you idiot.
Eli was sacked twice, so was Romo.
We had a running back that had a fumbling problem for 3 years and fumbled three time against the Eagles in one game. He turned out to be the best running back in Giants history once Coughlin got to him - Tki Barber.
No excuse for fumbling but Wilson isnt a power runner
we can score 40 points a game if KG puts a gameplan together
I think the offensive line can be fixed, and Eli showed tonight what he can do with a little time in utilizing the weapons this team has.
If the defense had been as ineffective as last season I would be as down as most of you seem to be. The Giants can score points, and the mistakes, turnovers, should be corrected
I am not nearly as bummed as I have been after other losses. I have no doubt, had Scott the experience to be available for that pass as he should have been, Eli finds a way to score.
More importantly, if the Giants had gone ahead, I actually felt the Giants defense had a good chance to protect a 1 point lead.
Calm down with Wilson being a bust. Kid had a tough night.
Lets at least let him redeem himself next week before sticking a fork in him?
The personal foul on the Cooper was an absolute joke .
The defense played decently they were on the field plenty
made some good stops after the turnovers .
Not much touch on that screen pass that careened off
Scotts hands for game. JCN56 well put screw the boys they
aint that good .
Hopefully prince gets back and hats off to TT played a damn good game and will get better . the odds are they were gonna win one and we had to gift wrap it as well .
Cant imagine how bad that locker room must be tonight ..
Gimme 1pm'ers all season long over this shit.
That spin motion puts extra torque on the ball when a defender has a grip on it during the tackle. That's what I saw today with his 2 strips. Wilson needs to learn how to keep his body facing north as he's getting tackled, otherwise forced fumbles will continue to come easier for defenders.
And you provided zero tonight, in fact, he was a negative.
Two fumbles....not even fighting for yardage or taking a big hit....just simply having the ball ripped out. That's not big league football.
And, whiffing badly on a block that got Eli sacked.
And that's not to mention the lack of any ability to run inside the tackles.
I'm not giving up on the kid, but that was rookie ball stuff tonight.
Anyway, let's all get out to the Swamp next week and cheer David Wilson's every move - not sarcastically, for real. We need the kid to succeed, and he has the tools.
He was a detriment tonight. He almost got Eli hurt. He is not an nfl running back.
* Randle is the difference maker on offense, as teams are scared to death of Nicks & Cruz
* Giants will probably be forced to bring a vet RB in till Brown gets back (although Scott played well despite the INT [bad. bad throw by Eli])
* Brewer actually had a decent game; (I thought he was going to be the weakest link)
Post game now.
Did you not like the way Cox took a knee nine yards deep in the end zone? Would Wilson do it better?
Coughlin can fix RB's.
And we're getting a veteran for next game.
Week 1 is almost never an indicator on how a season is going to go for a player or a team. If Coughlin sticks it out with Wilson I think the Giants will see immediate rewards for taking that chance.
. . . on that note, I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now.
For those who want Wilson to return kicks again, please notice that kick returns are very rare these days.
I really think we could use Jacobs because of two things...his leadership and his experience.
just go to sleep
go to sleep
The last 2 interceptions were on eli for bad throws, the 1st one was a great play by Ware. Secondary was great and they will need to be next week as well vs the broncos. DL was inconsistent, I give JPP a pass for thid being his 1st game and was facing a young talented left tackle in Smith. This inability to run on the goaline needs to be fixed asap,we suck at it because our olineman are drafted to be pullers not power guys so lets spread em out down there
The Giants were awful, overall, and the Cowboys barely squeaked out the win at home, despite 6 takeaways.
If the Giants can clean some things up, they'll still have a shot to contend for the division.
Not a good sign in Big D. But hey, I hope they enjoy their victory.
We need to win next week or it would be a hole to be down 0-2.
Dallas was 5-15 on 3rd down - Giants 6/11.
Defense did pretty good considering the shithole they were placed in.
Before you commit suicide tonight consider those numbers.
Did anyone really expect him to just go out there and play well? He's basically had no training camp, his conditioning isn't there as a result, and he's coming off of back surgery.
It's going to take 3-4 weeks for him to really get in the swing of things
Come on now.
I'm hitting the hay. Hopefully we've all calmed down a little bit tomorrow morning.
2-any vets salary would be guaranteed for the whole year and giants were/are tight against the cap and ojomo is cheap
That's spags's scheme which helped us. Attack A gap, blitz from the slot. We can't have guys pressuring us like that in the future.
As TC said in the post game, fumbles like Wilson's kill the momeentum and dishearten the team.
He can't be trusted at the moment and I'll trade playmaking ability for ball security in a game where the receiving corps is catching fire.
You can believe what ever you want.
Not very impressive really.
I saw an aggressive mentality for a guy who relied on the front 4 a lot with the Bucs from what I remember.
Also, it's the guys first game coming from college. I am interested in seeing how he adjusts once he gets the swing of things at this level again.
1) a punt bounced off McBride that resulted in 1 short TD;
Myers might not be a game changer, but he gets to the spot and has soft hands. And when teams play deep and extra coverage he's gonna get a lot yards.
Doesn't mean he's a bust, and of course he's our starter. But those were ghastly tonight and were the biggest contributor to our loss.
I'm really hoping for the best. Not only because I'm a Giants fan, but because I really like that guy. I can't imagine being in his shoes right now.
Situations..this will happen next week
Randle doesnt look for Ball. - ( New Window )
Wilson may be in the doghouse for a game or so
The second was on Randle.
Randle had Claiborne beat, and never looked. If he looks as soon as he breaks, its an easy catch.
Obviously the wheels can still come off too.
I just think that tonight's debacle is reversed next week if Big Blue can beat Denver, and I think they can.
Like many have already said, there is reason for hope...
Seemed like neither WR knew what to do there, and you had 3 defenders in the space. Lee was just barely away from the play.
Wilson I can't even imagine what he is thinking right now
He's saying the right things re: wilson. "He's a talented young man, we need him, he's got to play, but this can't continue."
He plays at the overall level he played at this game consistently, the turnovers will be cut back and he and Nicks/Cruz/Randle, problematic RBs or not, are going to carry this likely otherwise mediocre team to 10 wins and the playoffs this year.
But the execution and actually winning the game, who knows.
that's all you need to know about this one. had a feeling they would get burned by Da'rel and they did.
on the plus side they finally got their passing rhythm down.
ugh.
It cost them 2 TD's.
and rid of the rust
eli saw an open player in an open spot. What else do you want him to do. WRs have responsibilities too.
That was a complete shit show.
Have you noticed that it's difficult for anybody to stop Cruz, too?
Great players make plays. Asking a Ryan Mundy or Dan Conner to defend him is laughable. All-Pros like Patrick Willis and Bowman have trouble with Jason Witten.
Wilson, Scott, and Gilbride deserve most of the blame.
Fumble for being totally unaware, and a penalty that potentially kept us out of FG range in the first half.
Kiwi was a huge disappointment. JPP looked tired, but finally got to the QB. Tuck was non existent. Trattou actually got involved more.
McBride! chalk up another 7 points to Giant mistakes.
His other TD he was not covered by a LB
Dallas was 5-15 on 3rd down and had 83 yards rushing. The LB had something to do with that
still, totally irrelevant to the debacle last night
Turnovers at the worst possible moments were the main culprit. Fumble within the five yard line, Eli basically hands the ball off to Ware on the 1st play of the game. And, the int that was a pick 6 - that's basically 17 points right there.
Guys like Witten and Romo are going to make plays.
Agree with the more rational voices on this site about the positive play of the D and the ability of this team to fight back.
Dallas stinks. Their D gave up almost 500 yards despite a huge advantage in time of possession.
I just don't understand our red zone play calling.
The main positive I take from the game is that Cruz looks healthy off the heel and Nicks looked the best he has since the Tampa game last year. If we can move the ball this easily through the air, this is our division. But what a fucking shitty night last night was
Any doubls about the health of Cruz and Nicks were put to bed very quickly.
Hang in ther guys. All is not so bad.
This was not a fumble. the whistle should have been blown when his forward progress had been stopped.
Coughlin should have thrown a flag, instead of obviously blaming DW for the " fumble".
Maybe you would have preferred a repeat performance of last year's atlanta game. That would have been more pleasurable.
Link - ( New Window )
I still am not sure who is to blame for that - Eli or Scott.
Let's see what happens tonight. If you think one game is so important, then tonight may show us who the Division winner will be and we won't have to play the rest of the season.
He's probably not used to the velocity that Eli slings the football on screens.
That said, Eli has to put better touch on those screen passes. Way too much force imo
Now I hate them every time. Pretty soon they're going to show commercials between passes.
We can win games
