Just watched the postgame presser
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/9/2013 1:36 am : link
Man, Tom was livid, but even he took some responsibility for the sloppy play.

He's saying the right things re: wilson. "He's a talented young man, we need him, he's got to play, but this can't continue."
Eli can't be playing this poorly
Mike Nickeas : 9/9/2013 1:52 am : link
. Not all of it was his fault, but he simply can't be so erratic and maddening.
Come on,
Burt in Alameda : 9/9/2013 2:13 am : link
Guys. It was only the first game of the season. We won the Super Bowl after losing the first two games. Wilson will be fine; Coughlin will get him over his fumbling. I worry more about his pass blocking. Eli was good, and the defense seemed much improved over last year. We lost tonight after six turnovers and still almost won. We will be fine.
Eli didn't play poorly though.
Riggies : 9/9/2013 2:23 am : link
I certainly have no problem being critical of him when I feel he or the discussion deserves it, but other than that first INT, which was indisputably all on him, he played pretty damn well tonight and was a few bad breaks away from having another epic comeback on his pelt.

He plays at the overall level he played at this game consistently, the turnovers will be cut back and he and Nicks/Cruz/Randle, problematic RBs or not, are going to carry this likely otherwise mediocre team to 10 wins and the playoffs this year.
Add a "somewhat" before consistently.
Riggies : 9/9/2013 2:26 am : link
As in more often than not.
F this team
The 78th Reason : 9/9/2013 3:08 am : link
They really are awful. They put on an awful display of what it is like to be professional football team. My dad dying was less tragic than this.
There needs to be a waiting period for registration
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/9/2013 3:10 am : link
Or something.
Or a breathalyzer test to sign on
Geomon : 9/9/2013 3:21 am : link
Some people just can't take disappointment I guess.
Watching this game, I was remembered several BBI-isms.
Shockeyisthebest80 : 9/9/2013 3:56 am : link
- Eli used to throw a lot of picks because Shockey ran the wrong routes.
- TC saved Barber's career by getting him to stop fumbling.
- Perry Fewell is completely inept.
- Gilbride's red zone playcalling is asinine.

Well, the last 2 are actually true. The first 2 were always ridiculous. Eli's first 2 picks were inexplicable. TC and Jerald Ingram may have showed Tiki Barber how to properly hold the ball, but it takes talent and hard work to apply that knowledge to game time when actual players are trying to rip it away. Since Tiki left, Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, and now David Wilson have been chronic fumblers.

Positives...
- WR position: So I guess Hakeem Nicks really was holding back this preseason. He looked fabulous. Cruz let a ball hit him in the face and outside of that was dominant. Randle finally was able to show his talent during a meaningful game. Claiborne and Carr really hurt the Giants last year. Tonight, they got their asses whipped.
- Heart & Effort: This team could've easily withered, died, and just let the Cowboys beat their asses and then gone home. Instead, they fought to the very last second. I have to give them a lot of credit for that.
- Individual defensive players like Rolle, TT, and Patterson played very well.

Negatives...
- This team embarrassed themselves on National TV with their mistakes and generally sloppy play. I saw a lot of sloppy play around the league on Sunday (new practice rules, young players, etc.), but NO TEAM looked that bad with the exception of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- The LBs still stink, despite Paysinger not being totally awful. Herzlich is just not an NFL caliber player, yet he's getting tons of playing time after Connor got hurt.
- The offensive line was a mess. Eli had to scramble on damn near every play. It was as if they've never seen a stunt before. Brewer looked particularly bad at times. I thought Pugh screwed up a lot, but later came to realize that was Brandon Myers and he literally cannot pass protect at all.
- David Wilson: The rarely invoked ESPN "C'Mon Man!!!!!!!!"

It was one game, but the "one game"(s) start to add up quickly in a short season. I expect to see excellent effort against Denver. But the execution and actually winning the game, who knows.
Wow...
Shockeyisthebest80 : 9/9/2013 3:56 am : link
I butchered that first sentence badly.
Horrific Performance!!!
Emanfan : 9/9/2013 4:30 am : link
What a debacle! However belive it or not there were some bright spots though...Eli, with the exception of the first INT threw the ball pretty damn good. The first INT was all Eli, he's gotta get that ball over Ware. The second one Randall never got his head around. I watched that play in slow mo and he just absolutely did not even glance back at Eli.(HuH!!!! YOU RUN A PASS PATTERN BUT DON'T LOOK FOR THE BALL????)Wilson has got to keep it high and tight in traffic. He is gonna be a target now by other teams for a longgggg time. Giants have got to find a short yardage back or it's gonna be a long season. Gilbride and Fewell just are not very good. There play calling is atrocious. PERIOD!!!We also need to crank up the pass rush, Romo got hurt, and we should've turn the dog loose...No pass rush , no victory..it's has been, and always will be the engine that drives the NY Giants.NUFF SAID
lol, I just woke up
lalalalala : 9/9/2013 5:03 am : link

that's all you need to know about this one. had a feeling they would get burned by Da'rel and they did.

on the plus side they finally got their passing rhythm down.
ugh.

why why why do we not have one guy play man up on Witten?
gtt350 : 9/9/2013 6:16 am : link
come on Fewell, put Williams on him, bump him off the line and stay in his face the whole game
Eli is a fucking pussy, could have easily made that tackle on the

After watching most of the games yesterday
nomad1986 : 9/9/2013 7:20 am : link
I can't say I was surprised to see the Giants play such a sloppy game. They sure weren't the only team to do that and it's what the NFL is now. Much fewer practice time, much more roster turnover. The level of play across the league was embarrassing yesterday.

As I get older the games get more frustrating to watch. Everyone who follows the Giants knows they have no money to upgrade the OL or the LB and those units are very much below league average. More than anything that's what decided the game last night.

The Giants have a lot of money tied up in Snee, Baas and Deihl and they got nothing from any of them last night. Snee could not block #54 and he looks shot. The other two didn't even make it to Dallas.

On defense there is no excuse to allow the TE to kill them year after year. I know they were concentrating on WR's and did a great job but #58 can't play and he should never be allowed to be matched up on the TE. I know he's a backup that was on the field because the starter was hurt but the result would have been the same if the starter was matched up the same way. That's on the staff. The Giants have better LB options to take the TE and they let Dallas have that match up way too much. It cost them 2 TD's.
The Offensive Line
dutch1 : 9/9/2013 7:35 am : link
Give these guys some time to jell together. Leave Pugh as a starter and have Deihl strictly as a sub. Once they get coordinated together the running game will improve dramatically. The defense will improve as JPP gets more reps
and rid of the rust
if randle looks at his qb
dep026 : 9/9/2013 7:53 am : link
There is no 2nd INT.

eli saw an open player in an open spot. What else do you want him to do. WRs have responsibilities too.
Must admit...
rptl530 : 9/9/2013 8:06 am : link
that I'm as disgusted and pissed off as I'll allow myself to be over the outcome of a football game.

That was a complete shit show.
Who else saw Christie sitting next to Jerry Jones?
WideRight : 9/9/2013 8:23 am : link
Did he enjoy the game?
This thing with people being outraged that they can't cover Witten
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/9/2013 8:29 am : link
needs to stop. He's going to the hall of fame.

Have you noticed that it's difficult for anybody to stop Cruz, too?

Great players make plays. Asking a Ryan Mundy or Dan Conner to defend him is laughable. All-Pros like Patrick Willis and Bowman have trouble with Jason Witten.
Tommy you can't zone him but you could man up on him

Oline will get it together
Some Fan : 9/9/2013 8:36 am : link
We need Andre Brown or some RB who has half an instinct to block and play without fumbling. When Andre went down last year and Bradshaw was hurt, Giants lost. Same shit this year. Forget his fumbling, Wilson's blocking is abysmal.
This one shouldn't take a long time for people to figure out.
arcarsenal : 9/9/2013 8:43 am : link
You give the football away 6 times, you're almost certainly going to lose. It's simple. That's just how it goes in this league.

I haven't even read through anything... but I'm sure a ton of BBI is blaming the defense even though the offense gave the ball away on the 1st play from scrimmage, committed 2 turnovers that were run back for scores and were given the ball on the 1 yard line off the Mundy INT and did nothing but move backwards and kick a field goal and turn the ball over 6 times overall.

The offense showed its potential.. we had no business even being in a game like that.. but when you can score as quickly as this passing game can, you can keep it close. Unfortunately, close wasn't enough and yet another backbreaking turnover pretty much sealed our fate when we had the ball with a chance to take the lead.

Coughlin should be livid.. this game was the kind of disaster you should never see from a team he coaches. Inexcusable to play THAT sloppy.

Obviously the running back position has become a major problem. Not just because of the fumbling but because of the poor blocking. We're going to have to sign someone and do it quick and hope they can help.

On a positive note.. I thought despite being put in bad positions over and over again, the D did about as good as you could realistically have expected them to and I think it's safe to say that Nicks was holding back a bit in the preseason. A healthy #88 and #80 should do wonders for us.

The OL needs to be a lot better and the front 4 on the defensive front need to generate more pressure. They shouldn't have been stoned at the line by the guys Dallas had in there for so much of the game.. but they did come up with 2 huge sacks late in the game.

Overall, just really fucking disappointing to lose a game like that. I expect a better effort on Sunday. Everyone can say the Broncos are going to annihilate us... I think it'll be a good game.
I thought the defense played well, all things considered.

dep026 : 9/9/2013 8:47 am : link
believe it or not. People were high on the defense. Couple easy 3rd down conversions (the blown assignment on the blitz when it was 3rd and 11 and no one covered Witten somehow?)

Wilson, Scott, and Gilbride deserve most of the blame.
Defense only gave up 22 points
95cobraguy : 9/9/2013 8:52 am : link
With our offense i'll sign for that every week. 6 fucking turnovers? It's a miracle the giants were even in this game to begin with, and actually came very close to pulling off another miraculous comeback. They NEED another RB, wilson is not ready and scott would've been cut had brown not gotten hurt.
Yeah, the Witten play was the obvious mistake...
arcarsenal : 9/9/2013 8:54 am : link
One of those 2 players were supposed to cover him and both rushed the passer.

I was pleased overall, though. And hopefully the "all Fewell does is play 10 yards off" crowd paid a little attention because we played up on the line a whole lot last night.

The game plan was pretty clearly to not let Dez Bryant beat us and they did a good job of that.

Yeah, some of the conversions were frustrating but honestly that's just the NFL.. it's gonna happen, you can't stop them all. When they needed to get the offense the ball back late in the game, they did it twice... unfortunately, we daggered ourselves on the pick 6 off Scott and that was it.
McBride
dep026 : 9/9/2013 8:54 am : link
had a helluva game too.

Fumble for being totally unaware, and a penalty that potentially kept us out of FG range in the first half.
And people were
dep026 : 9/9/2013 8:56 am : link
pissed about the lack of pass rush. Until the final drive, we literally barely sniffed Romo.

Kiwi was a huge disappointment. JPP looked tired, but finally got to the QB. Tuck was non existent. Trattou actually got involved more.
Saying the defense played well is hyperbole
Greg from LI : 9/9/2013 8:58 am : link
They were ok. It was a mixed bag - DTs and CBs looked very good. Safeties - Rolle played well, Mundy stinks, Cooper Taylor doesn't belong on the field right now. The DEs were a major disappointment. If you want to give JPP a mulligan since he missed preseason, that's fine, but Kiwanuka did next to nothing and Tuck only generated pressure when he was playing tackle.
Hynoski needs to shake off the rust as well.

Lots
AcidTest : 9/9/2013 9:03 am : link
of positives. The O basically gave this game away.

How many teams are still in a game after five turnovers? The biggest problem on D is the lack of coverage ability of our LBs. This also affects our ability to use them on blitzes. Dallas was able to blitz their LBs regularly because they can cover in space. They don't need to keep all three back to do so. Their LBs are also effective at fill the gaps on the DL to shut down the run.

I agree with those who said that Snee is having a lot of problems in pass protection. It's only one game, but age and injuries seem to have robbed him of the lateral mobility needed to be effective in pass protection. He's here this year, but like DIehl should probably be gone after the season. I thought Beatty and Pugh were very good.

Wilson had to be benched last night, but we can't give up on him, and not merely because we don't have any other options. He has a lot of talent, but his fumbling was a problem at Va. Tech. One would have hoped that the coaches would have solved it by now. Everybody in the league is going to be ripping at the ball at least until the end of next season, and that will affect his running style. I'd like to see Cox get some carries.

I was against bringing Jacobs back, but I think we should at least take a look at what he has to offer. At least he can pass protect. Wilson still seems to be lacking in that regard. The bottom line is that we don't have a complete back on the roster, and that tips off the defense to some extent about what we are going to do.

The DL, WRs, and secondary were excellent. Eli was erratic, but made some plays.
Yeah Christie
Spyder : 9/9/2013 9:04 am : link
that front running back stabbing fat SOB sitting up their with the enemy. F him.

McBride! chalk up another 7 points to Giant mistakes.
It's not "hyperbole"
arcarsenal : 9/9/2013 9:09 am : link
Hyperbole would be saying the defense was incredible. No one said that. They did a good job. Tough to dispute that.
LB
stretch234 : 9/9/2013 9:10 am : link
On his first TD, Herzlich covered him - Romo made a perfect throw. It amazes me that people do not think other players can make plays.

His other TD he was not covered by a LB

Dallas was 5-15 on 3rd down and had 83 yards rushing. The LB had something to do with that

who cares where that fat basturd Christie sat?
bc4life : 9/9/2013 9:28 am : link
You know the best snacks were going to be in Jerry's box, so that's where fatass sat.

still, totally irrelevant to the debacle last night
LBs were not lights out
bc4life : 9/9/2013 9:32 am : link
But, you really get better by playing in real games - I think they should be okay this year.

Turnovers at the worst possible moments were the main culprit. Fumble within the five yard line, Eli basically hands the ball off to Ware on the 1st play of the game. And, the int that was a pick 6 - that's basically 17 points right there.

Guys like Witten and Romo are going to make plays.
the D played more than well enough to win.
Victor in CT : 9/9/2013 9:41 am : link
They held them in the game, didn't allow a TD after the Ware pick, almost scored one themselves. If you told me that they would hold Dallas to 87 yds rushing, 269 passing and 21 points (legit points that is) I'd have said they win going away.
When I went to bed last night after the game I was pissed...
T-Bone : 9/9/2013 9:42 am : link
and still am to a degree. But none other than Mike Greenberg, of all people, actually brought up a good point that made me feel a bit better. He said the team gave up the ball 6 times and yet almost won the game. The Cowboys scored at least 17 points directly off of turnovers (2 returns for TDs and the FG off Eli's first pass of the game...maybe even 24 including the ST gaffe which I believe led to another TD) and the passing game at least seems to be clicking finally. Not to mention, considering the amount of TOs the team had and where, I thought the defense played pretty well.

I feel better about the team now, after sleeping on it and hearing the perspective of a non-Giants fan in Greenberg. We just need to get a vet RB in here to help Wilson out. The RB group single-handily lost that game for the team if you ask me. No other group...whether on the Giants or the Cowboys...had a bigger effect on the game.
Not too concerned
RB^2 : 9/9/2013 9:48 am : link
The team didn't quit and was in a good position to actually win the game despite all the turnovers. Also, every single bounce went Dallas's way last night. If anything, Dallas should be worried that they didn't capitalize on the early Giants mistakes and jump out to a big lead.
It sure seemed like Murray violated the new rule
NYG in NC : 9/9/2013 9:59 am : link
for RBs loading up and driving the crown of the helmet into the defender when him and roll went heads up. He should have been penalized for that.
i love how the defense played
ShockNRoll : 9/9/2013 10:02 am : link
i said before the season that if webster and tuck got back to form, this would be a very good defense. they played their asses off last night. the one knock i have is the pass rush through the first 3 quarters. to give up 331 total yards and hold a team to 5-15 on third down in 37 minutes on defense is impressive, especially against this cowboy team which has the potential to be pretty explosive (see romo's 4,900 yards last year). anyone who is placing even a small blame for this loss on the defense is insane. yes, their pass rush could have been better, but ultimately they did the job both against the run and the pass.
Another positive from last night
Jay on the Island : 9/9/2013 10:15 am : link
Was the play of LT Will Beatty. I haven't seen many comments about him but I think he did a hell of a job against Ware despite the fact he was usually left to block him without any help from a TE or RB.
jay
ShockNRoll : 9/9/2013 10:28 am : link
agreed on beatty. he was steady. ware had a few pressures and obviously the pick, but that was not attributable to anything beatty did wrong. ware is going to get pressures against any tackle in the league so yes, i was also impressed with beatty.
Game positives....
dguy901 : 9/9/2013 10:32 am : link
AB had huge fumblitise issues, Eli does have an occasional bad game but until now never that atrocious. As good as Eli is, he also has bad games as evidenced by last night, that is fact, not a slam on him, well, yes I'm pissed! Regardless, the D is vastly better than last year and all you need to do is look at time of possession, our offense couldn't give the D breaks, period. Hynoski didn't block very well, DW was being gang tacckled and held upright while they ripped at the ball and the OL blocking was poor due to injury subs. Before everyone screams for a new super RB which we can't afford, realize Scott has upside and the rook, Cox is faster and stronger than Brown ( I realize he has to prove he can protect Eli but he can't miss blocks worse than Wilson on that one sack). Monday night will tell us where we will be next January! JMHO>
I'm sorry but Eli was surgical running the hurry up
Gmen24 : 9/9/2013 11:23 am : link
He always seems to excel when he is on the line calling the shots. Just like his brother. I'm not saying that we need to stick to it all game, but we need to mix it in a lot more. We just can't wait until the 2 min drill or when we're down 2+ scores.
Those 2 picks were bad
Gmen24 : 9/9/2013 11:25 am : link
The third can't be put on him. To say he was horrible last night?? Maybe a slow start, but heading into half time he was and the second half he was dead on.
Turnovers
stretch234 : 9/9/2013 11:27 am : link
It is not just having 6. They had 2 D touchdowns and started drives on the Giants 15, 16 & 48. The field position and 2 defensive TD's are so hard to overcome
