Don't Kill the Messenger but Brandon Jacobs

SoZKillA : 9/9/2013 1:40 am
Apparently has a work out scheduled with us for Tuesday, per his long time friend and boxing colleague Kendall Holt

@Kholt456: The messiah, will be at Giants Stadium working out for the team Tuesday Morning @nfl_am _ericdavis_ @ http://t.co/nLCqDxTo51
There are going to be a lot of workouts Tuesday.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/9/2013 1:41 am : link
Involving a bunch of RBs.
Give me
SoZKillA : 9/9/2013 1:44 am : link
BJ. Fresh legs and knows the system and has something to prove
I will
dairborn : 9/9/2013 1:48 am : link
at this point take jacobs because he knows the system....he can be a leader and a mentor to this young core of running backs.....I will be shocked if 27 is not back on the field this week
I've been against this, but I hope he shows up, looks fantastic,
Riggies : 9/9/2013 1:53 am : link
and gets signed, as unlikely as that middle part is. At least he'll probably block his ass off, even if he can't do anything else all that well.

I'm not writing Wilson off and still believe he'll have at least a decent career in the big picture, but you can't really trust him or any other RB on this roster right now to do even that basic function, nevermind anything else.
HELLLLLL NO
Anakim : 9/9/2013 1:54 am : link
I'd rather have DJ Ware than fucking Brandon Jacobs
He's been posting videos of him lifting

And today he posted a 40 yard dash which he ran a 4.4, I know it's all short and T Shirt stuff but we can use the big man
DJ ware over Jacobs?

LOL
I just don't get the Jacobs obsession around here
Anakim : 9/9/2013 2:05 am : link
If it's purely for nostalgic reasons, why don't we get Lawrence Taylor? We need linebackers too! Jacobs is done. He was done the last couple of years he played for us and he was done in San Fran.
whyJacobs?
BigBlue2112 : 9/9/2013 2:10 am : link
Because He Can Protect Eli AndThe Ball. Doubt He's In GameShape But Still.
At this point, it's not a matter of him being good.
Riggies : 9/9/2013 2:11 am : link
It's now a matter of him being less awful than what you likely have.

If he can pass block and knows his assignments (and the coaching staff doesn't over-do his carries or do something as stupid as bury Wilson for him -- this is the big issue here), there may be room for him because the other currently uninjured guys can't be fully counted on to do those things.
Tonight was one of the worst
Mike in Long Beach : 9/9/2013 2:22 am : link
jobs by the running backs in a Giants game that I've seen in quite some time.

I would love this.
Lets not ignore history now
Neverend : 9/9/2013 2:28 am : link
Jacobs has had brutal hands out of the backfield as well. so many, many drops because he took his eye off the ball at the last moment.

im only happy for this because of what he would bring in the locker room and pass protection. not for his receiving and running skills, that's for sure
Jacobs can pass protect
BlackLight : 9/9/2013 2:29 am : link
and that's something, but at his best, he was never particularly reliable as a short-yardage back.
This makes sense.
Optimus-NY : 9/9/2013 2:47 am : link
Cut Scott, bring in Jacobs for the year to avoid termination pay.

I then think that they'll sign another RB after week 3 who has less than 4 vested years, when they'll likely cut Ojomo. If Ojomo clears waivers 24 hours later, they'll probably re-sign him to the Practice Squad.

After week 8, Andre Brown will be eligible to return to the active 53-man roster, at which point the Giants will have to cut someone to make room for him.

RasputinPrime : 9/9/2013 2:47 am : link
show some respect. It's a tryout.
my post on termination pay is wrong
Optimus-NY : 9/9/2013 3:00 am : link
it's late.

*I should have said that Jacobs may very likely be on the roster for the year to avoid termination pay, even though it would be miniscule (25% of his paragraph 5 base salary if he is signed on Tuesday afternoon).

*Jacobs would get $715,000 which would be prorated for 16 weeks instead of the full 17 ($672,941).

*His cap # would be $555,000 though, and would be prorated for 16 weeks, instead of the full 17 ($522,353). 25 percent of this amount would be $130,588.
I wont kill the messenger...
RIZZBIZZ : 9/9/2013 6:12 am : link
Actually I say if we had signed BJ last week, we don't lose this game.
and if they had let Wilson back into the game
lalalalala : 9/9/2013 6:13 am : link

they might not have lost the game
if they had let Wilson back in they win? Really?
Greg from LI : 9/9/2013 6:28 am : link
What the hell was the Great Hokie Hype going to provide? More of that scintillating 7 carries for 19 yards action? More whiffed blocks? At least Scott managed to pick up a few blitzers.
not playing volleyball on a screen would have helped
lalalalala : 9/9/2013 6:31 am : link

it was a quick hook. the second fumble wasn't completely his fault, he got mauled.
Whether Jacobs is in "game shape" or not
Beez : 9/9/2013 6:43 am : link
isn't critically important, is it?

As someone else said, he can pass-protect ... and he could probably still put someone on their ass.

For 12-15 plays a game? Can't see why so many are so against it. It's not like Wilson's going anywhere, so a Wilson/Jacobs tandem might be 3 ticks better than a Wilson/Scott tandem.
I can definitley see this happing
Jon from PA : 9/9/2013 6:47 am : link
if no other reason than in pass protection. I wonder what kind of shape he is in...

Those who say Jacobs is done
RetroJint : 9/9/2013 6:48 am : link
might consider what a year and one half or so off from the pounding did for OJ Anderson. Parcells mentioned that back in the day. Sometimes a big back got his career second wind by having a hiatus like Olive Head did. (Giants nickname for him). Yeah, if they don't get Big Jake in for a looksie on Tues, somebody is pumping their carrot.

a while. That 1st half display by a running back was the worse I've ever seen. Can't hold onto the football and can't block.
You don't bench Wilson long term, you don't have the luxury
jcn56 : 9/9/2013 7:05 am : link
But benching him last night was the right thing to do, he was almost literally shitting the bed. For his own confidence if nothing else they had to get him out of there, he was self destructing.

Guys have recovered from bad nights before, but you don't just leave him out there to continue unraveling.
Absolutely.
Beez : 9/9/2013 7:20 am : link
Anyone saying Wilson should NOT have been benched is a full-on idiot.
Jacobs really, really sucks.
Big Blue '56 : 9/9/2013 7:22 am : link
He cannot run the ball and proved it for a year or so before he left. I trust our evaluators of course, but there are backs out there who can pass pro AND do SOME damage running and catching the ball
It's not about running the ball...
BayRidgeBlue : 9/9/2013 7:28 am : link
It's about being able to protect Eli and get a few touches here and there. Don't get me wrong, if we can get a back who can do both then I'm all for it.
That's what I said. There are OTHER RBs who can PASS PRO
Big Blue '56 : 9/9/2013 7:30 am : link
AND run the ball(something BJ can't do, unless you want to revisit a 300 pound RB who consistently get caught a few yards behind the line by a 150 pounder)

the one thing about Jacobs
Matt in SGS : 9/9/2013 7:34 am : link
yes, he can pass protect, and yes he knows the system. However, even assuming that Wilson works out the fumbling issues and gets more carries, the Giants need a goal line back/ short yardage back. Despite being 265 pounds, Jacobs hasn't been a good short yardage back in years. Who can do that job for the Giants until Brown is ready to go?
if all you want is somebody to
section125 : 9/9/2013 7:34 am : link
protect Eli, put a guard back there.

Don't be stupid, you need a running threat or the other guys blitz all day.

I love BJac - I doubt he has anything left. Kick the tires but don't expect a signing.
If they end up thinking
Rick5 : 9/9/2013 7:52 am : link
that he could help, then I would have absolutely no problem with it whatsoever.
how many more games
newmike2 : 9/9/2013 7:54 am : link
will it take Wilson to work out his fumble problems. Is he the type of all purpose talent that will make up for the games the Giants will lose while he works on his fumble problems.
The NFL season is on 16 games long, and unless the team is in rebuild mode, they don't have the luxury of giving a guy a few games to figure out how to hold on to the ball, that is what pre-season is for. All a defense has to do is have the first tackler hold him up while the rest rip at the ball.
He will only hurt this team at the RB position. Denver will be practicing this all week.

Bring in BJ and see if he can help.
Can someone who understands blocking schemes explain
WideRight : 9/9/2013 7:57 am : link

Presnap or post? Reading the D or simply technique? is it correctible?

Jacobs is a firecracker in the locker room and on the field. Wilson needs someone like Jacobs to straighten him out. He knows our system, scares the Hell out of D Backs and can block his ass off. The risk to reward is very low. And we can get him at the league minimum.

TEAM BJ!!!
i'd like to know how McGahee
UConn4523 : 9/9/2013 8:37 am : link
is healthwise. I'd love him here for 8-10 carries including all goaline work/short yardage. Was dinged a bit last year but no offseason work this year should have allowed a good amount of healing.

Gary, the key word is "hope." He's done very little in the past few years to prove he can revert to the Jacobs of old.
I'd prefer Dwyer
UConn4523 : 9/9/2013 8:38 am : link
and a semi-healthy McGahee over Jacbos who really can't do much at this point. He'll pass block, but that isn't our problem.

the RBs looked a little lost last night - Jacobs might be the right medicine for them. Jacobs is a great blocker.

I agree that he has not shown he can be a short yardage guy consistently - but he can bust one out - he's mad dangerous in the open field - and he can lay a hard lick on the best of the defensive backs.

are you serious - pass block is definitely an issue - Wilson almost got Eli killed last night - the not being able to keep the ball is only part of the problem. Someone ran right past him last night - unabated - and got right to Eli.
Does anyone honest to god actually believe this o-line
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/9/2013 8:41 am : link
can pave the holes Jacobs needs to be effective? They can't even really hold blocks for a 5'9 200lb runner. They're going to spring a run for Jacobs? Come on.

UConn4523 : 9/9/2013 8:42 am : link
we aren't not going to use Wilson though so he'll have to work on it. We aren't signing a guy that will be the feature back. We are signing a guy that can a). light a fire under Wilson's ass, b). can get short yardage, and c). can pass block.

All are obviously important, but Wilson got benched for getting stuffed and fumbling.

Jacobs:

He can block. He's not going to rush for 1000 yards. He's not going to break off many long runs. I'm not sure if he's done or not. I do know he'll protect Eli and can pound for a few here and there. No big back on this roster is killing the Giants. Dwyer? A never was with fumbling problems. Hightower? Another never was. Michael Turner? Probably the same upside/downside as Jacobs. Bring him in and see what he's got left. Seriously, after that shit show? How could it be worse?

I don't know anything about what's going on. I assumed that they were waiting after week 1 to sign another back due to cap reasons. I was surprised that Torain was cut, others weren't. I would think Torain ges another look, too. Been with the team for a while and played pretty well in the pre-season.

UConn4523 : 9/9/2013 9:20 am : link
its A problem, but not THE problem. We luckily have a smart QB who can react to blownup blocking. It isn't ideal, and I don't like either, but that isn't why we are hitting the FA pool this week.

Wilson cannot hold onto the ball and by previous reports, he looks like he isn't mentally there (too hard on himself, too mental about things, too emotional, whatever). Short yardage is also a massive problem. We score on the 1 yard line after that Mundy pick and I think the coaches, and fans all believe we win that game.

If he is somewhat healthy, i'd love McGahee. Proven vet, worked with Peyton, can fit in any offense, can pick up blitzes, can get the tough yard, and would be on a team that he has playoff hopes.
I'm sure they'll be avoiding backs with a fumbling history

1 game does not a season make, especially when the OL is in disarray, your QB throws 3 picks and your feature RB fumbles twice ( the 2nd time he was being held upright while they ripped at the ball).
Jacobs doesn't fit when you consider who would be cut to give him a roster spot. I would prefer to see Wilson be benched (so he never forgets to hang onto the ball and hit the ground when 3-4 defenders have him) next game with a healthier Hyno, Scott and some game time for the rook, Cox. Cox has comparable size as Brown, he is a little faster and stronger. Lets see how well the RB alt's perform in practise this week. Way to early to panic. JMHO.

A few thoughts
Matt M. : 9/10/2013 12:46 am : link
1) I love how people dismiss some RBs as never was, but call for Torrain. That's pretty much what he is also.

2) I was never convinced Jacobs was done. I thought each of his final 2 seasons with us he was the best back on the roster at the end of the season.

3) That said, I am not convinced he isn't done either. It has been more than a season since he took a meaningful snap. That could either be valuable rest, or add to rust.

4) Michale Turner is the most interesting option. If his ankle is sound, he is easily the most talented of the group. But, there has to be a reason a player of his caliber remains unsigned. I wouldn't rule him out even if he isn't signed immediately, again dependent on his ankle.
