RT @RVacchianoNYDN: Three Giants WRs had over 100 yards last night -- Cruz, 118; Nicks, 114; Randle, 101. That's the first time that's happened in team history.
appearing to be developing some chemistry, this unit can be unstoppable if we protect Eli.
The real weird thing about this game is "do we even come close to losing this game if Andre Brown was playing?" And why is that? It is not like he is a great player or anything.
The previous drive tough Dallas that they couldn't play coverage and hope to stop Nicks, Cruz, and Randle. So they decided to take their risks on the outside and throw the extra defenders at Eli as blitzers. Make Eli throw quickly before his WRs can make their breaks, which means checkdowns to the RB, quite often. A RB screen is a classic playcall to deal with a defense who is employing that tactic. The Giants just botched it.
last night was a hard loss to swallow, I can see how on Monday for some at least its hard to concentrate on the bright spots of last night. that said if they ever can get that line fixed the showcased how deadly their passing attack can be with all 3 guys going over 100 last night
that's such bullshit. The screen pass should not have been an option to call too. If Dallas was blitzing, I'll take our WRs (who all had big game btw.) over their corners 10x out of 10.
The only reason Eli audibled to a screen, because the shotgun run would not be there. IMO, those were the two plays.... a screen to Scott or a Shotgun run to Scott. Once Eli saw the blitz coming, he audibled out of the run to the screen.
That's your coordinator. For that play to even be an option at that time of the game is inexcusable.
Wilson runs to daylight on that first play if they can get him the ball. Scott had room a few times and couldn't maneuver around his blockers. I'd have to re-watch that last one that went off his hands, but I bet there was some room to run.
with slants and skinny posts. Thats exactly the plays you want versus the blitz. Unfortunately, our audible play for that time was a screen. Makes absolutely no sense.
the main positive was that Nicks looked healthy. In the pre-season, he looked like he was going through the motions but you had to wonder in the back of your mind was he still hurt or not. Based on yesterday's game, he looks like he's ready for a big year. The Giants offense works when
A) Eli is at QB
B) Nicks is healthy
Cruz and Randle can put up big numbers when Nicks is doing his thing. A healthy Nicks and this offense (when not turning it over a half dozen times) is as explosive as any in the NFL.
Eli should have access to every possible option in the event the defense is giving him something. The problem was in the execution...not play selection.
vs a blitz is the perfect call...if Scot gets his head turned around he gets 15 yards easy...if a defense is going to all out rush with their linebackers the screen is the right call...
The sad thing with that pass is that they actually had blockers on all the Cowboy defenders. Carr is really not close either as he is protecting the sideline.
looking at it slow, it was not a good pass by Eli. If he just leads the RB it is a big gain. He threw it behind him
you cant keep dropping back and throwing 15 yards down the field you have to keep the defense honest and the giants could not run the ball so the best option is the screen pass...
it is like running the ball..the point of that call was to keep the secondary honest and not just drop back on every play and play coverage..
as it seemed like we kept going to Scott, later in the game. The short dump off passes were likley due to Eli having to go with his check down option, but the screen to Scott was really upsetting. That play IMO should not have been called; agree Eli could have changed the play, but he has to trust the players on the field to at least be ready for the ball. KG should know better, again IMO.
if Scott turns his head in time you are not screaming and yelling about the call...
you cant just go out and drop back 3 times and throw it 15 yards down the field...you have to have plays to keep the defense honest in that situation and since they could not run the ball they decided to go draw or screen..
I am convinced that Eli audibled out of a run for the screen. If they are blitzing and you have 1-1 coverage..... that was our dream scenario. Claiborne was absolutely atrocious. Their nickel corner got burned repeatedly. .
Ill take my chances with our stud receivers if he read blitz.
they got 25 yards. And even in the 3 drop back passes, we had WRs were wide open.
You want to run it during the game, fine. Game time..... i want Eli making decisions down the field. You dont take the ball out of your best players hand. Let Nicks or Cruz do their thing.
many different routes and distances. Why call a play that they historically don't run well to a guy playing in his first real action who was at the time the 4th best option on the field after Nicks, Cruz and Randle? Makes no sense.
I know its a different sport.... but if the Knicks were down 1 with under a 1:00 to go.... are you feeding Chandler in the post and have him go 1 on 1? Even though you know he wont get doubled team?
and like i said i know what your saying and i dont necessarily disagree with you i am just saying i dont hate the call..
all i am saying is i understand why they called it and i dont hate it...would i have liked to see them keep airing it out? yes but i dont blame the play on a bad call..i blame it on bad execution..
I disagree with you because I think the set up of that play gets them much more than 3-4 yards.
If Eli throws it better and hits Scott while he is already angled up field with blockers there is some space. Carr is then in full chase mode after having to adjust to protecting the sideline.
I totally understand saying throw to WR until they stop them, but with 1:50 at midfield, a little play change is not all bad - the execution was bad and results worse.
Here's a link of the highlights of last night's game. The throw to Scott is around the 23 second mark. You can see that he has plenty of space and a couple of blockers in front of him. Given that Scott's only real skill is straight line speed, it was a good play to call for him and he could have reasonably gotten 15 yards or more on the play. Yeah it sucks that he tipped it straight to a Dallas DB but it's hard to see what's so "inexcusable" about the play call.
The passing game after being rusty to start clicked and looked explosive. Yes it was against a zone defense from behind, but nonetheless that was very welcomed.
the giants made so many mistakes and every bounce fell the cowboys way--something like 6/6 balls on the ground they got--yet, the giants could have easily won the game. also remember that they haven't played much with each other in preseason with all the injuries and 2 inexperienced linemen, so i expected a lot of rust.
cowboys played one of the best games in franchise history yardage wise
room had 400. they had 3 guys go for over 100 yds, witten had his infamous 18 yard catch game
but they walked out with a loss, and got a lot of those yards passing the ball coming back from a deficit. Sexy statistics don't mean absolute shit when you come away with the loss. I'm happy that Cruz and the heel looks good. I'm happy Nicks seems healthy. Pleased with Randles progression. Franchise records and statistical milestones in a horrific, blown away divisional loss? I couldn't give more of a damn
As has been said, it was a matter of a lack of execution on that last INT. Unfortunately, we had a kid in the key point of the game on a Sunday Night broadcast (with all the lights) have to make a play after he probably didn't get a lot of reps with Eli since Wilson was the starter. Had that been Bradshaw, that pass is probably completed...Bradshaw picks up 10-15 yards...and the Giants kick a game winning FG. The timing wasn't there on the play. Such is the game of football.
they need to play their way through this sloppiness. To be honest, and this isn't just excuse making, I thought a lot of the week one games looked sloppy. Teams just aren't crisp with the limits on practice.
The Giants offense hasn't really been together all camp. They will right the ship. I'm not that worried about the turnovers. They can clean that up.
with cursory knowledge of football would blame the play call. It was piss poor execution by Eli & Scott, period. Had that play worked, it would have setup the deep ball threat that was certain to come and succeed if the Cows had to back off.
You can say the stats don't mean shit in a blown away divisional loss
But if the ball doesn't bounce off Scott, and they go onto score...suddenly the stats are more meaningful? The point those stats reflect is extremely significant...the Giants WRs have come a long way in 1 years time. It was only a year ago they were suffocated in the opener against the same corners. Their performance against some very athletic corners was extremely encouraging and bodes well for the offense going forward. The negatives from last night are almost too numerous to count, but lets not dismiss one of the big bright spots.
looked like a player who didnt play all preseason. I would have continued to gone after him. Even a day later, I am still astonished our audible call was to backup RB.
The real weird thing about this game is "do we even come close to losing this game if Andre Brown was playing?" And why is that? It is not like he is a great player or anything.

I didn't get it.

Ill take my chances with Cruz, Nicks, Randle, and even Myers getting open before I trust Darrell Scott on a screen.

Go right to the 4:30 mark.
But that's why I'm watching the game... And they call/play it.
if Scott turns his head in time you are not screaming and yelling about the call...

dont hate the call at all
the drive before they went 3 drop back passes and they went 3 and out...
Ill take my chances with our stud receivers if he read blitz.
You want to run it during the game, fine. Game time..... i want Eli making decisions down the field. You dont take the ball out of your best players hand. Let Nicks or Cruz do their thing.
jsut bad luck the ball bounced straight to claiborne...
Unfortunately, we didnt get a chance to see that.
all i am saying is i understand why they called it and i dont hate it...would i have liked to see them keep airing it out? yes but i dont blame the play on a bad call..i blame it on bad execution..
I was pleased that Nicks looked like a rocket last night running. He really had his legs and looked explosive.
I guess if he was saving it for the regular season, it was true. He looked very good last night.
If Eli throws it better and hits Scott while he is already angled up field with blockers there is some space. Carr is then in full chase mode after having to adjust to protecting the sideline.
