In the Minority, I'd Stick with Wilson and Scott

Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/9/2013 11:27 am
Wilson had a terrible game, but we've all seen what this kid can do. He's very young and he will turn it around.

Scott also made a bad mistake in a critical point of the game...that happens with inexperienced players. But he seems to be improving too.

Both players know the system. Both players have been with the Giants all through camp.

I'd stick with them.

It's the rational move
Go Terps : 9/9/2013 11:28 am : link
.
More worried about Wilson's blocking
SanFranGiantsFan : 9/9/2013 11:28 am : link
than running/fumbling.
Putting aside the mental mistake with Scott
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/9/2013 11:29 am : link
I just don't see how a runner who goes down so easily and runs straight ahead with no agility, no cutting ability can be really useful.

If Coughlin can correct Tiki's fumbling problems
MadPlaid : 9/9/2013 11:30 am : link
then he can help Wilson. I agree with SanFran though. It is Wilson's pass protection blocking that has me the most worried.
I'd stick with Wilson - don't know about Scott
gidiefor : Mod : 9/9/2013 11:30 am : link
I do think we need a vet in there and you can't cut Cox
Besides some of the obvious issues from last night
Bino5 : 9/9/2013 11:31 am : link
They just do not have enough depth in case of an injury to one or both of Wilson or Scott.
That's fine.....
Reb8thVA : 9/9/2013 11:31 am : link
but I do think you need to bring in some one in case of further injuries.
While I don't
Josh in the City : 9/9/2013 11:31 am : link
disagree that Wilson and Scott may be out best options, there is absolutely no question that we could use a veteran back to at least mentor and teach these young RBs.
definitely stick with Wilson
Jints in Carolina : 9/9/2013 11:31 am : link
i agree with that.
Wilson's 'block' on
SanFranGiantsFan : 9/9/2013 11:31 am : link
2nd & goal was horrendous, cringe worthy.

If he can't block, he's not going to play. Simple as that.
Disagree - both are too raw
jcn56 : 9/9/2013 11:31 am : link
I wouldn't mind having either one on the roster, but both of them and nobody else doesn't make me very comfortable. They're missing blocks (complicated further by our OL situation), turning the ball over and just both look too raw at this point.

That's why I'd almost rather have Jacobs back, even if his running is subpar. Knows the system, known entity in terms of turning the ball over, and maybe dangerous enough that he's still a credible running threat in addition to being good in pass protection.
Wilson I agree with
WahooGiant : 9/9/2013 11:32 am : link
I don't see any reason to keep Scott.
by the way
gidiefor : Mod : 9/9/2013 11:32 am : link
Wilson didn't look good in all aspects of the game last night - but he didn't really fumble - the ball was wrestled away from him twice - he's got to learn not to let that happen - his blocking was outright bad -
It's
AcidTest : 9/9/2013 11:32 am : link
defensible, but I agree the bigger problem is Wilson's pass blocking. It might make more sense to use Donnell more, especially if Hyno still isn't 100%.
I'd give them
AnishPatel : 9/9/2013 11:33 am : link
a game or two to see if both can play better. I want to see Wilson's character and if he can rebound. Scott I can't really blame. He was thrown in to the fire and did okay. The last play was a bad luck. I want to see more of Scott and see if he can get better.

Let's see if things can get better next game. If not, then let's see if we can bring in a veteran. But I want to see if Wilson can rebound first and if Scott can adjust to his role and get better.
Scott played a solid game
Bake54 : 9/9/2013 11:33 am : link
have no idea what some of you were seeing.
Do The Giants Really Have a Choice?
Bernie : 9/9/2013 11:33 am : link
Put Wilson right back in there. In the long run, he will give the Giants the best chance to win..
Shame with the Brown injury
Motley Blue : 9/9/2013 11:34 am : link
can't have Wilson doing Kick Returns. I think it helps him get fired up and more importantly get rid of the jitters.

They weren't terrible fumbles, Dallas made good plays, but you can't have two of them and you have to get down. Gotta know defenders will be going for the strip.
they have to. they have no choice. TC said as much at the post game
Victor in CT : 9/9/2013 11:34 am : link
presser last night. Said we "need him" about Wilson. But this shit has to stop. As TC said, the plays were basically over on those fumbles. They wrestled it from him on the way down. And he can't crap himself in the face of an oncoming blitzer.
I don't mind signing a vet....
kinard : 9/9/2013 11:34 am : link
... but Wilson is the guy. Coughlin/Reese made the decision to go with these three guys (including Cox).

I can see taking Wilson out for a series or two. but sitting him the rest of the half for Scott? Come on, it was Coughlin's decision to shape the roster like he did. You know damn well what you're getting with Wilson.

He's still the best running back you have and has to be on the field in the 4th quarter. If Brown was playing, I get it. But letting Scott play (was wasn't terrible but just OK) instead of Wilson? Just didn't like that at all
Eric...I agree except one has
MikeN in Ottawa : 9/9/2013 11:34 am : link
to wonder about the confidence level of Wilson at this point. But, that being said, man, I would absolutely demand that he start carrying the ball like Tiki did and, frankly, I have never understood why more guys don't.

But you definitely need a veteran there to guide Wilson along...but I do agree it is time to move forward and stick with these guys for the next couple of games.

Teams are going to test them, though, especially in terms of their blocking for Eli. We have to expect that now
I'll stick with whoever
Enzo : 9/9/2013 11:34 am : link
can keep our QB upright. Wilson looked lost out there.
I'd only bring someone in
lugnut : 9/9/2013 11:34 am : link
from off the street who can block and protect Eli. If we sign someone beyond that, are we really asking/expecting them to do anything more than not fumble? That bar is pretty low. We should just pass 80 times per game then. If blocking weren't an issue, I'd say stick w/ Wilson and Scott until they get it.
Wilson is soft....at least in Pass Pro
MotownGIANTS : 9/9/2013 11:35 am : link
he is afraid to be hit in the mouth which means he never attempts to hit the rushing defensemen in the mouth...always diving at the feet and they are expecting that and leap or go around him....

he is a 3rd down change of pace RB....
I'm inclined to agree
RB^2 : 9/9/2013 11:35 am : link
but only because there appear to be no better alternatives. The Giants may have promoted Wilson too early so to speak but that's something that can be corrected, though it's a shame when a first round running back can't hit the ground running when many around the league seem able to.
To
Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/9/2013 11:35 am : link
be fair to Wilson, although he should have gotten in the way more, it's very tough for a 205 pound running back to block a 270 pound DE.
It is tough.
Thunderstruck27 : 9/9/2013 11:37 am : link
I can't do it. But I wasn't a first round draft pick.
Eric
bc4life : 9/9/2013 11:37 am : link
How big was Bradshaw?
Bradshaw was my size 5'9 and change, 215
JonC : 9/9/2013 11:38 am : link
Wilson's a youngster, it takes reps and recognition in practice and when live bullets are flying, but he's got to improve rapidly.
whoa
Greg from LI : 9/9/2013 11:39 am : link
I always assumed JonC was 6'6" 285.
Bradshaw played with a ferocity and confidence
JonC : 9/9/2013 11:40 am : link
that Wilson needs to develop.
JonC
bc4life : 9/9/2013 11:40 am : link
Was that post meant to inform or boast?
Agreed Eric, I sure wouldn't want to do it. But the fact remains that
Victor in CT : 9/9/2013 11:40 am : link
he has to do it. And if he isn't willing to stick his hat in the 270 lb lineman's chest then he cannot be an every down player. He then would have to be the KO specialist and a situational package player. That "attempt" to block on 2nd a goal was just inexcusable. That is why he didn't play last year. And that is what will keep him from being a full time player. But I still think they have to let him keep trying for now. I just hope it doesn't get Eli killed in the process.

Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/9/2013 11:40 am : link
Bradshaw is built differently, but the more important point is how often was Bradshaw asked to block the one-on-one?
should read
Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/9/2013 11:41 am : link
block the DE one-on-one
JonC
bc4life : 9/9/2013 11:41 am : link
Classic case in point - Ron Dayne.

The size of the fight in the dog
JonC is being modest
RB^2 : 9/9/2013 11:41 am : link
He's actually 10 feet tall and if he were on the field last night, he would have vanquished the Cowboys with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse.
I think people are misapplying wilson's size against him
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/9/2013 11:41 am : link
I'd rather have a 5'9 200lb back than a 6'5 260 pound back who needs holes blocked with a wrecking ball or else he flops.

Tiki was 5'9 210. Chris Johnson isn't a large man (and also can't block for shit). Warrick Dunn was 5'10 190.

Didn't stop them from having good, successful careers.
It's been the same offense
bc4life : 9/9/2013 11:42 am : link
for years, so I' would think while rare, it did happen.
i dont know who is out there
Mighty : 9/9/2013 11:42 am : link
but what we really need is a back that can handle both short yardage and be good at blitz pickups.
and Tiki blocked. And did it with bad intentions.
Victor in CT : 9/9/2013 11:43 am : link
He was fearless. And so was Meggett.
Tiki
Danny L : 9/9/2013 11:43 am : link
Also sucked big time in his first few seasons. In fact he was so bad, the Giants drafted another RB. And we all know what happended then.

Way too early to give up on Wilson.
All of Jon's posts both
vibe4giants : 9/9/2013 11:43 am : link
inform and boast. He's a dual threat.
Reminds me of 2011 when everyone panicked
jlukes : 9/9/2013 11:44 am : link
about Cruz dropping everything in the first game.

Giants went out and signed Stokely.

We all know what happened next...
cant help but think
RIZZBIZZ : 9/9/2013 11:44 am : link
Jacobs would bring some ferocity and confidence to this running back corp. Great mentor for Wilson.
Jerald Ingram
Tim in Eternal Blue : 9/9/2013 11:44 am : link
is the one who fixed Tiki Barber's fumbling problem... for what its worth.
The coaches are going to have their hands full here
Matt in SGS : 9/9/2013 11:45 am : link
They need to coach him up to stop the fumbling and keep his spirits up (they need him this year). Odds are they will sign someone on Big Tuesday as a veteran back because they have to have more options back there. But Wilson needs to overcome this and grow from it.

Some top NFL backs have had fumbling problems, and several fumbled twice in a game. Joe Morris did it in 1988 vs. the Saints. Tiki did it a few times vs. the Eagles. Eric Dickerson had the same problem. He's too talented a back to just bury and give up on, but the bottom line, until Brown comes back, they need him. Period. He had a horrible game on National TV and the Giants lost. But as far as I know, he actually woke up this morning. Let him go back to work, watch film, work hard at practice and get him ready for Denver.
vibe ok
bc4life : 9/9/2013 11:45 am : link
but if JonC is the same size why isn't he trying out tomorrow instead of dicking around on this message Board - we need him...and we need him now.
Tiki certainly was fearless.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/9/2013 11:45 am : link
Fumbling 9 times in a single season and still running is fearless.

Maybe Wilson needs to
RB^2 : 9/9/2013 11:46 am : link
just identify a target and blow him up like JW did to Free last night (which was a thing of beauty) to get rid of the jitters. That might work.
