As others have said, he may not have been Harry Carson, but he had a nose for the ball and made plays. I have been completely unimpressed by Connor. J-A-G. Herzlich is even worse.
This situation highlights the stupidity of the Nassib move. Giving up an extra pick, wasting a 4th rounder on a position that at this time did not need to be addressed. Had they stood pat, Khaseem Greene (BBI fave), Sean Porter and Gerald Hodges were all available. The 6th rounder they gave up could have landed Vince Williams, who made the Steelers.
In Connor, Herzlich, Rivers et al we know what we have: Mediocrity at best, incompetence at worst.
I don't pretend to know what kind of pros they might become. I do know that QB was not a pressing need and LB was. Williams (6th rounder)actually made the Steelers. Greene has received very favorable reviews thus far with the Bears. Porter made the Bengals but hurt his shoulder and was IR'd. Hodges made the Vikings. So, every one of the 4 made his respective team, each of whom has better LBs than the Giants do. Nassib has been unimpressive, and if Eli ever went down the season would be over anyway. 2 wasted picks to get a player who they pray won't have to play.
knew his position, but unspectacular, which is the best of what we had.
He's a starter on any team that doesn't have a pro-bowl guy in front of him. His failing has always been his health, and we shouldn't have relied on him.
when we went into 2012 with him as a starter, we saw right away that he cannot play full time.
I didn't think that Blackburn was going to find another NFL job, But the Panthers, who are strong at LB, signed him as a reserve and he was active for their first game.
I think he is being a little underrated by some, but I don't watch all the coaches' film. And who thought they would not draft or sign an upgrade for the position?
If blackburn were here, he'd be a starter. In carolina, he's just part of the group.
We've seen that movie already. He's great on special teams, he's a good team guy, but asking him to play that much is putting him in an unfair situation.
this is as disasterous as it seems. I liked Connor, thought he would do a decent job. But i don't think the drop off between him and Herzlich is that much.
That being said, I think they go w/ the 5 DB set w/ Mundy, Rolle, TT, Ross (Or Prince if available) & Webster more often than not, especially against a pass heavy offense.
Jon, if I was vague, apologies. I don't expect a 4th rounder to start
as a rookie. However, I do think it makes more sense to keep a guy like Blackburn who knows the D and whose strengths and weaknesses are known as your stop gap rather than sign a Connor type. Blackburn could then help groom a Green or some other young player.
The team viewed Connor as a significant upgrade, a player they've liked since college. They viewed him as a safe get, and he was improving weekly. Unfortunately, once again he's dinged.

You're viewing this through your own prism, too. Perhaps a touch of bias involved.
