Justin Pugh lack of size and strength

ItsShowtime : 9/17/2013 4:21 pm
How much stronger are we expecting him to get? He has a small frame and small arms. He will not be getting much bigger at all. The one thing that sticks out is how small he looks out there. There are TE's that look bigger. He doesn't get any push at all on his defenders. ZERO. I can't think of any situation where he can be our starting RT for the next 3-4 years or for the remainder of the contract.

Hate to sound so negative but it doesn't look like a good pick at all.

Pugh got thrown into the fire and has not embarrassed himself. I think he's proving to be a good pick in that slot.

it time. Everybody knew he needed a year in the weight room, and that he would be a better pass blocker than run blocker as a rookie. I was not high on the pick, but he has held his own for the most part in pass protection.

There is some though that he could kick inside to center, but I'd rather keep him at RT for now. He's never played center and I don't want another Kiwi DE/LB situation.
He was plugged in where he was needed
Jupiter : 9/17/2013 4:26 pm : link
His position eventually will be guard or center.
What are you talking about?

how can we expect him to block anyone

He's done better than anyone can hope as a rookie
Blueballz : 9/17/2013 4:30 pm : link
but a slight problem is he definitely doesn't fit the mold of a big mauling O-lineman you would want for a power run type offense, if we're even that anymore. I don't know what we are now? I'm certain the Giants coaching staff and front office don't have a clue either.

he just needs to bust his arse and get stronger. Beatty too. That will help their run blocking, and performance in general.

He'll be fine at OT
JonC : 9/17/2013 4:33 pm : link
OGs need to have lower centers of gravity and the power to generate a push as well. I don't think Pugh at OG is best utilizing his skillset, at early glance.
Put him in a professional s&c program
B in ALB : 9/17/2013 4:38 pm : link
Year round and he will benefit greatly from increased strength, flexibility, speed, quickness, technique and footwork. Pugh is not a road grading drive blocker and the Giants dont combo a lot with the G on that side - nor do they zone or pull a ton - hes on an island out there and performing well. He's already an upgrade at the RT spot. I don't know yet if that says more about his own development or the Giants complete lack of talent at that spot.

He could very well get moved inside to the Guard spot down the line. He's pretty versatile which is a very good thing.

However, after watching him as a rookie at RT, I think it was a good pick. Some time in a professional weight room and a few more pounds will work wonders. Of course, he needs experience, that said, the Giants have bookends at Tackle for the foreseeable future.
I think he has been ok
teso56 : 9/17/2013 4:47 pm : link

Beatty was at this time. I for one think he has been doing a really solid job thus far. Look to our interior line, they are the ones playing with their heads up there asses. Bass and Snee have looked flat out bad thus far, that is scary.

I noted during training camp that he has a noticeably small frame compared to the othe brig men in camp. He really does look a bit like a tight end compared to our other O linemen. Not saying he won't succeed, just my observation.

and that is how he s/b used - pulls, traps, etc.

As a RT, he will probably be better than average as a pass blocker, in fact far better than average against speed.

He will be worse than average blocking for the run game between the tackles.

He will be far better than average blocking for anything that gets him into space.

nope its just about long arms and how much you can bench press..

Bleedin Blue : 9/17/2013 5:43 pm : link
solve our O-Line problems we will more than likely never use the TE as anything more than a safety valve and a blocker. So forget about using a high pick on a TE, til we fix the O-Line and possibly get a new Off. coordinator (I am not advocating that) the TE is not used like other teams use their TE's. Look how we used Shockey as soon as Coughlin and Gilbride got here.

He will still mature for a few years. That means he will get naturally stronger and bigger as well. Plus, he is now getting the one thing he hasn't had, experience.

IMHO, he and Beatty will book end the Giants line for many years.

I think he has done well in pass protection
oipolloi : 9/17/2013 7:26 pm : link
that one play where the guy just went by him was a running play where Pugh was getting ready to fire into the DL and he just whiffed. When he gets back in his pass blocking stance, he has done a good job.

Pass protection is just a lot more important than run blocking these days. It just is. Obviously, you want a guy who does both. But those guys are all pros. If you have to choose at the tackle spot, you want a guy who pass block. And Pugh can do that.

And just for the record, I was very skeptical of the Pugh pick. But after seeing him, I think he is going to be a good OL. Not easy for a rookie to come in and play tackle.

Although a lot of posters on this board are pretty sharp,
Reese's Pieces : 9/17/2013 7:38 pm : link
you really can't judge the career of a rookie OT when he is thrown into the lineup on opening day.

One other observation: I have heard a lot, and thought so myself, that a big part of the effectiveness of the OL depends on the guys having played as a unit for a substantial time. This probably goes back to the '86 Giants for me when the "lunch pail guys" had only one high draft choice, William Roberts. Two were eighth round picks and Jim Burt was signed from the USFL.

With the injuries and the newcomers, the Giants line just has none of that. They should get better as the season goes on. In fact I think that the team will be playing a lot better by the second half of the season, but by then it may be too late.

holy crap
chris r : 9/17/2013 8:52 pm : link
its a legit question. He is undersized for a RT and hasn't been great in the run game. Just because something isn't the biggest problem doesn't mean it can't be talked about.

10 turnovers, inability to run the ball, very little pass rush from the edge you think Pugh is too small to be playing in the NFL!
Lack of size hasn't hampered Beatty's career.

thank God we took an OLman.....there were a few here that suggested Manti if he dropped to us....

I wanted to go OL the first two rounds, but at the second pick there wasn't an OLman ranked high on the board, so Hankins was the pick......

We need OL help next year via the draft or FAcy.....we need two, and maybe 3 new starters...
Pugh is too small to play in the NFL.
81_Great_Dane : 9/17/2013 10:43 pm : link
JPP is a bust. Wilson and Scott aren't NFL running backs. Baas is a free agent bust. Tuck, Rolle, Snee and Webster are finished. The linebackers are the worst in the league. Gilbride is too predictable. Cowher should replace Coughlin. Reese must go.

Pugh is somewhat small for a right tackle

but back in reality Pugh has only 2 games under his belt. JPP is a freak and will be again. Honestly the only guys I am really down on is Tuck our o-line, RBs and linbackers these will come around (I hope). Although hard to swallow when Osi has a TD interception and our d-lineman are doing the waltz with o-lineman

Is not and won't be the problem. And he'll get better. Can't say the same thing about some others (Diehl, Baas, Snee, Jacobs, Cordle, Herzlich, Meyers, Pascoe, Tuck, to name a few).
here is our OL roster
xtian : 9/18/2013 11:30 pm : link
Offensive Linemen:
65 William Beatty OT 6-6 319
72 Justin Pugh OT 6-4 301
66 David Diehl OT 6-5 304
76 Chris Snee OG 6-3 305
77 Kevin Boothe OG 6-5 320
73 James Brewer OG 6-6 330
67 Brandon Mosley OG 6-5 318
64 David Baas OC 6-4 312
63 Jim Cordle OC 6-3 320

I have watched Pugh and I have been pleasantly surprised. For a rookie, he doesn't make many mental mistakes: holds, offsides, or obvious wrong assignments. He doesn't get out-quicked by DEs and overall does a good job in pass protection--his weakness is the bull rush. He will never be a mauler type and move people out with ease, but he will be able to pull and get to the second level. In today's game, that probably is more important.

Joey in VA : 9/19/2013 12:17 am : link
For a rookie who missed half of camp in a camp that features zero hitting. He will absolutely add about 15-20 lbs as he hits an adult spurt (one where your long bone growth finally stops and you simply get thicker) and spends a few years with football as his job.

You seem to be writing him off after 2 games, which quite frankly has to be criticized as stupid, no matter if you have a valid point about his play or not. He has been starting for roughly one month, did you expect a finished product on a disjointed offensive already?

He may move inside, it's entirely possible he's Snees replacement but for now he's our RT and doing a fair job, certainly better than what we had last year.
Beatty has a much longer reach, so he's better at redirecting
David in LA : 9/19/2013 12:17 am : link
the pass rusher than Pugh. I know it's his first year, but I have a feeling RT is not the position that is best suited for his skill set.
David
Joey in VA : 9/19/2013 12:21 am : link
I agree, I think Pugh is destined to slide inside. He can be a devastating pulling guard, which is what made our running game so lethal when Ward and Seubert were here. Either way he's starting for a long time and playing well for a long time, he's a damn good football player.
Oh yeah, he definitely needs work in an NFL weight room
David in LA : 9/19/2013 12:27 am : link
for 2 games, I can't say that I'm displeased with the pick. It's really concerning how bad the interior of the OL has been playing. You had some decent things to say about Brewer, do you think it's worth rolling the dice and inserting him into a starting role at some point?
I hope Joey is right, and Pugh slides inside.
Exit 172 : 9/19/2013 12:28 am : link
The interior needs to be improved for the future ASAP. And I think we'll be able to get a solid right tackle somehow.
I think the best thing that Pugh has going for him right now
Mike in Jersey : 9/19/2013 8:58 am : link
is that he is playing next to Chris Snee. Pugh looks like a Pro Bowler compared to Snee at the moment. Not sure if that says more about Pugh or Snee though.

That being said, I think Pugh has been very solid. He's been one of the better performers on our OL through 2 games.
