Justin Pugh lack of size and strength

ItsShowtime : 9/17/2013 4:21 pm
How much stronger are we expecting him to get? He has a small frame and small arms. He will not be getting much bigger at all. The one thing that sticks out is how small he looks out there. There are TE's that look bigger. He doesn't get any push at all on his defenders. ZERO. I can't think of any situation where he can be our starting RT for the next 3-4 years or for the remainder of the contract.

Hate to sound so negative but it doesn't look like a good pick at all.

hasn't been the problem. He's done a good job for a rookie
I think they should

why would you hate it now?
I think reasonable expectations are that he'll add

7.6 units of strength.

Pugh got thrown into the fire and has not embarrassed himself. I think he's proving to be a good pick in that slot.

it time. Everybody knew he needed a year in the weight room, and that he would be a better pass blocker than run blocker as a rookie. I was not high on the pick, but he has held his own for the most part in pass protection.

There is some though that he could kick inside to center, but I'd rather keep him at RT for now. He's never played center and I don't want another Kiwi DE/LB situation.
He was plugged in where he was needed
Jupiter : 9/17/2013 4:26 pm : link
His position eventually will be guard or center.
What are you talking about?
NNJ Tom : 9/17/2013 4:27 pm : link

He has exactly..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/17/2013 4:29 pm : link
2 professional games under his belt and looks to be one of the more solid and consistent members of the line.

Is this really what you took away from the first two weeks?
Plus with those short arms
Beer Man : 9/17/2013 4:29 pm : link
how can we expect him to block anyone

He's done better than anyone can hope as a rookie
Blueballz : 9/17/2013 4:30 pm : link
but a slight problem is he definitely doesn't fit the mold of a big mauling O-lineman you would want for a power run type offense, if we're even that anymore. I don't know what we are now? I'm certain the Giants coaching staff and front office don't have a clue either.
T-Rex are great for lifting weights
JonC : 9/17/2013 4:31 pm : link
he just needs to bust his arse and get stronger. Beatty too. That will help their run blocking, and performance in general.

took one line from Sy's thread and thought it would be a good idea to start this thread instead of just asking Sy on the that thread.

No matter though, at least we got to see more pictures of dinosaurs.
He'll be fine at OT
JonC : 9/17/2013 4:33 pm : link
OGs need to have lower centers of gravity and the power to generate a push as well. I don't think Pugh at OG is best utilizing his skillset, at early glance.
Put him in a professional s&c program
B in ALB : 9/17/2013 4:38 pm : link
Year round and he will benefit greatly from increased strength, flexibility, speed, quickness, technique and footwork. Pugh is not a road grading drive blocker and the Giants dont combo a lot with the G on that side - nor do they zone or pull a ton - hes on an island out there and performing well. He's already an upgrade at the RT spot. I don't know yet if that says more about his own development or the Giants complete lack of talent at that spot.

He could very well get moved inside to the Guard spot down the line. He's pretty versatile which is a very good thing.
Are we doing a thing in which we complain about

clearly its a terrible pick.
I was against the pick also...
Ed A. : 9/17/2013 4:45 pm : link
However, after watching him as a rookie at RT, I think it was a good pick. Some time in a professional weight room and a few more pounds will work wonders. Of course, he needs experience, that said, the Giants have bookends at Tackle for the foreseeable future.
I think he has been ok
teso56 : 9/17/2013 4:47 pm : link
He is exactly what they needed - he can play guard or tackle and has been decent.

In general i think that both sides of the giants lines have not played well

Based on what are we assuming he can't get bigger or stronger?
I don't think Pugh is going to be a problem, he light yrs beyond where
dangerousrappingfrog : 9/17/2013 4:59 pm : link
Beatty was at this time. I for one think he has been doing a really solid job thus far. Look to our interior line, they are the ones playing with their heads up there asses. Bass and Snee have looked flat out bad thus far, that is scary.
Draft

Guard, center, guard first 3 rounds and forget the OLine for 10 years
I haven't really focused on him during a game, but...
Crispino : 9/17/2013 5:06 pm : link
I noted during training camp that he has a noticeably small frame compared to the othe brig men in camp. He really does look a bit like a tight end compared to our other O linemen. Not saying he won't succeed, just my observation.

and that is how he s/b used - pulls, traps, etc.

As a RT, he will probably be better than average as a pass blocker, in fact far better than average against speed.

He will be worse than average blocking for the run game between the tackles.

He will be far better than average blocking for anything that gets him into space.
I was one

Who was in the Eifert but I am happy with Pugh. Just thought someone with Eifert's skill set would make our offense unstoppable.

first round. We picked 19. Pugh is already a good pass defender at rt, who can play lt if Beatty goes down. He will never be a mauler, but he'll get stronger and better against the run.
6'4 inches and 307 lbs yeah he is small
Blue Blood : 9/17/2013 5:39 pm : link
and his first year in the NFL.. yeah with a year in an NFL weight training and nutrition program he isnt going to get ANY bigger or stronger EVER...

blocking is all about strength.. its not about footwork, technique, hand placement, leverage, assignment knowledge...

nope its just about long arms and how much you can bench press..
Sweet Jesus.
BigBlueBuff : 9/17/2013 5:40 pm : link
Justin Pugh is NOT going to be a center. That is the most obnoxious falsehood to come out of the entire offseason.
until we
Bleedin Blue : 9/17/2013 5:43 pm : link
solve our O-Line problems we will more than likely never use the TE as anything more than a safety valve and a blocker. So forget about using a high pick on a TE, til we fix the O-Line and possibly get a new Off. coordinator (I am not advocating that) the TE is not used like other teams use their TE's. Look how we used Shockey as soon as Coughlin and Gilbride got here.
I'm also
Bleedin Blue : 9/17/2013 5:45 pm : link
happy with Pugh's play thus far, he's one of the bright spots on our line.
He's 23 years old, 6-4 and 301.
old timer : 9/17/2013 6:04 pm : link
He will still mature for a few years. That means he will get naturally stronger and bigger as well. Plus, he is now getting the one thing he hasn't had, experience.

IMHO, he and Beatty will book end the Giants line for many years.
Geez...calm down about Pugh
Rick in Dallas : 9/17/2013 6:05 pm : link
He has played 2 freaking games and is one of our better OL. He has held his own and will get even better with time.
LOL...
arcarsenal : 9/17/2013 6:06 pm : link
He's actually been one of the better players on the OL so far. Don't let that stop you from creating a useless thread, though.
In the upcoming weeks

Pugh will face players like Charles Johnson,Justin Houston,Barwin / Brandon Graham.

We'll see how he does, especially against guys with power
Well, he has already played against Demarcus Ware too.

Pugh 6-4 307

Joeckel 6-6 306
Fisher 6-7 306
Johnson 6-7 303

Yes, he is too small
I think he has done well in pass protection
oipolloi : 9/17/2013 7:26 pm : link
that one play where the guy just went by him was a running play where Pugh was getting ready to fire into the DL and he just whiffed. When he gets back in his pass blocking stance, he has done a good job.

Pass protection is just a lot more important than run blocking these days. It just is. Obviously, you want a guy who does both. But those guys are all pros. If you have to choose at the tackle spot, you want a guy who pass block. And Pugh can do that.

And just for the record, I was very skeptical of the Pugh pick. But after seeing him, I think he is going to be a good OL. Not easy for a rookie to come in and play tackle.

Although a lot of posters on this board are pretty sharp,
Reese's Pieces : 9/17/2013 7:38 pm : link
you really can't judge the career of a rookie OT when he is thrown into the lineup on opening day.

One other observation: I have heard a lot, and thought so myself, that a big part of the effectiveness of the OL depends on the guys having played as a unit for a substantial time. This probably goes back to the '86 Giants for me when the "lunch pail guys" had only one high draft choice, William Roberts. Two were eighth round picks and Jim Burt was signed from the USFL.

With the injuries and the newcomers, the Giants line just has none of that. They should get better as the season goes on. In fact I think that the team will be playing a lot better by the second half of the season, but by then it may be too late.
Pugh
blue42 : 9/17/2013 8:00 pm : link
has played pretty well if you ask me. He was tested against very good players and did a good job. I didn't like the pick, wanted the UConn LB but Pugh is good player.
which TEs look bigger?

he's 6'4" 300 pounds.

we'd know about it - OLineman are anonymous unless they HOF or turnstiles.
I know a what his measureables are supposed to be.
Crispino : 9/17/2013 8:45 pm : link
I'm just telling you that he has a slight frame compared to our other linemen. I would question his size compared to how he's listed. On the field, he looks smaller than every other lineman i saw in person.
