One of the many wasted LB picks of the Reese era

And Tyrell Johnson, Arkansas St. - I remember many on BBI were high on him leading up to the (I think) '08 draft.
Here's my faux short list
Optimus-NY : 9/18/2013 5:38 pm : link
QB - David Carr
RB - Willis McGahee (followed by D.J. Ware)
FB - Michael Robinson
WR - Devin Thomas
TE - Jake Ballard
OT - LT/RT Max Starks (followed by RT/LT Sean Locklear if he's healthy)
OG - Stephen Peterman
C - No clue, lol.

P - Daniel Sepulveda
K - David Buehler
LS - No clue, lol.

DE - Dave Tollefson
DT - Marvin Austin, Rocky Bernard, & Frank Okam
MLB - Takeo Spike, Bradie James...and Phillip Dillard (j/k lol)
OLB - Thomas Howard
S - Kerry Rhodes, Atari Bigby (looks like Kenny Phillips is done)
CB - Drayton Florence
We're gonna look back one day and laugh at the LBs that were
Optimus-NY : 9/18/2013 5:45 pm : link
drafted during the Reese era. Dis-gus-ting.
Amazing Some of the Names
Bernie : 9/18/2013 6:13 pm : link
on that list. Since they are not retired, it makes you wonder what these guys are doing with their lives and how many of them saved their money.
Optimus, aside from Bowman,
Big Blue '56 : 9/18/2013 6:51 pm : link
there were no LBs worth a high pick..Sure, in retrospect there might have been a few, but in reality, little to write home about, imv..

Yes, who he DID pick wound up being at best mediocre, though there's plenty of time for J. Williams to prove he was a steal..

We've done rather well, not great, in FA..

AND, the Reese era is FAR FROM OVER so I doubt we'll be looking back laughing all that much, though nothing's a certainty of course
Also, didn't Devin Thomas retire
Big Blue '56 : 9/18/2013 6:51 pm : link
or did he change his mind?
You could probably put together a competitive defense
81_Great_Dane : 9/18/2013 7:14 pm : link
from that list. Gruesome list of QBs though.
One Day?
Reb8thVA : 9/18/2013 7:18 pm : link
I am laughing now.
Larry Grant, Kirk Morrison, Takeo Spikes
jeff57 : 9/18/2013 7:39 pm : link
.
A lot of 1st and 2nd rounders on that list from just a few yrs ago
Mason : 9/18/2013 8:06 pm : link
Just two years ago Ray Edwards signed one of the biggest deals that season for a DE and now he is unemployed. Ah, only in the NFL.
Here's hoping the NFL doesn't expand
Upstate_Giants_fan : 9/18/2013 8:09 pm : link
for a very long time.
Again I ask....
fbdad : 9/18/2013 8:15 pm : link
when exactly do you go from available free agent to retired NFL player?

No one gets to go out gracefully
Good points by Upstate Giants fan and fbdad
Optimus-NY : 9/18/2013 8:18 pm : link
very good points indeed.
Optimus - Cap ?
DavidinBMNY : 9/18/2013 9:32 pm : link
Optimus - I love your cap write ups. What it looks like to me is this year NYG are tight against the cap. Who would want to sign with them for a game to game check unless there was no other suitor>
56 the problem is that Reese picks mainly
LauderdaleMatty : 9/18/2013 9:39 pm : link
WRs, DLs, and DBs in the first 3 rounds. Linebackers are found by other teams. If Reese is as good as we think one old believe he could find one above average linebacker in the draft in 7 years.

Was Bowman even a consideration? We'll never know but its obvious from his drafts and the bargain basement style he doesn't care about that position.
David - That's not an issue now
Optimus-NY : 9/18/2013 9:48 pm : link
Anyone who signs with a team now isn't getting anything more than the league minimum which is as follows for the following groups:

Anyone who signs only counts on a weekly basis rather than the full 17 weeks, so the cost of signing a player will dwindle each week. In-season cap space won't be an issue, especially since the Giants will pick up space right after week 4 (between $100 to $200 K) and week 8 (add another $200 to $300 K). The key is to avoid players going on IR. If another 2 more go on it, especially earlier in the season, then they'll have to make more room under the cap, dipping back into the Snee/Weatherfood pool. My hunch is that they'll be alright.
It's a shame Jahvid Best had all the concussion issues
Mike in Jersey : 9/18/2013 9:51 pm : link
Kid is really talented
We may not have the Best Linebackers..
BBurns : 9/18/2013 10:13 pm : link
But we damn sure have the worst ....
BBurns
Optimus-NY : 9/18/2013 10:19 pm : link
lol. Sad, yet true.
With all those back up QB's out there...
bradshaw44 : 9/18/2013 11:34 pm : link
It amazes me that we have chosen to keep Curtis Painter as ours. It seems boneheaded. I'd take most all of those guys on that list over Painter. He is atrocious. But I guess if we lose Eli for an extended period we are screwed anyways. But I would like a QB that might be able to eek us out a win or two if Eli was out for three games. It's perplexing.
kevin Smith
giantranger : 9/19/2013 7:18 am : link
might be worth taking a look at. He showed ok last season no?
We all agree,
Doomster : 9/19/2013 9:41 am : link
if Eli goes down, we are done....

But if he misses just part of a game, and say one the following week, can Painter deliver better than Nassib? Obviously from what the coaches have seen in preseason and in practice, he can't, otherwise Painter would not be here....

But the cost of this was an extra player....you are keeping a player on this team, taking up a roster spot, that may never play......does that make sense? Obviously next year, he will be the #2 guy, and Painter is out of a job, and we have the roster spot back......that is the plan.....but if Nassib does not take advantage of this season, and is not "ready" next year, hope that wasted "spot" does not come back to bite us this year....

As for the free agents out there, I thought Turner would have a job......but apparently, he has lost his game, and no one is even sniffing....
I'm all for bringing back Locklear
nicky43 : 9/19/2013 3:18 pm : link
if he's healthy.
