Why can't we run a screen?

CMicks3110 : 9/26/2013 1:04 pm
I don't get why it is so hard for this offense? I was watching some old tiki highlights and he was fantastic at it, we were a really good screen team under coughlin with tiki? What happened to that part of our game?
Takes a lot of OL coordination
JonC : 9/26/2013 1:08 pm : link
and the RB has to be patient and have a feel for it. I don't think our OL is mobile enough on the whole right now, either.
Offensive Line.

.
why obsess with screen?
giantfanboy : 9/26/2013 1:18 pm : link
every team has some things they do well and some things they just do not do well

just because you can not do something does not mean you should spend time and energy TRYING To do it

they can be just as effective..
you have a speedster like wilson .. the idea is to get him into space
it could be a screen but
if we can not run a screen why not try a swing pass to wilson..
it can be just as effective

when the Giants ran screen well.. with Tiki
Blue Blood : 9/26/2013 1:25 pm : link
and to a lesser extent Bradshaw they had guards that were very good at getting out into space.. Seubert and a younger more mobile Snee.. that is not the case now

what exactly does this offensive line do well?
OL hitting their blocks,
AnishPatel : 9/26/2013 1:28 pm : link
and we probably don't rep it as much during TC and during the week. We used to run it a lot when Hufangel was here, so he probably repped those concepts during TC and during the week. So we became a team who could execute a screen very well because of the way we prepared for it.

Ten Ton Hammer : 9/26/2013 1:31 pm : link

And you want that bunch to try screens? lmao
well a few things we dont do well or not at all
GIANTS128 : 9/26/2013 1:33 pm : link
slants, screens and QB sneaks...most teams do all 3....
They should absolutely be practicing screens this week
Jimmy Googs : 9/26/2013 1:34 pm : link
along with a lot of other designed plays to get the ball out of Eli's hands quicker (swing passes, rollouts, slants, etc) and moving the pocket.

Even if this new line plays okay, we should expect a good deal of pressure on Eli and he is not going to have the luxury of sitting in a pocket to look downfield.
But we do
Doomster : 9/26/2013 1:36 pm : link
run on second and 10....
Thus far our runs on 2nd and 10
Jimmy Googs : 9/26/2013 1:39 pm : link
have only created 3rd and 12
That's OK Jimmy
mrvax : 9/26/2013 2:15 pm : link
a long bomb on 3rd and 12 will save the day.
Holy shit TTH
Kyle : 9/26/2013 2:17 pm : link
That gif should just be posted every time someone asks "what's wrong with the Giants" or "what's the state of the Giants".

That's us in a nutshell.
Maybe Coughlin abandoned it...
Eli Wilson : 9/26/2013 2:19 pm : link
after the first one of the year was intercepted?
We would ultimately save more yards
Jimmy Googs : 9/26/2013 2:21 pm : link
by just punting on third and 12 versus trying the bomb. We might also save our QB's life.
By the way TTH
Jimmy Googs : 9/26/2013 2:27 pm : link
that gif shows the play that Baas hurt his neck on.

He twisted it turning around so fast to watch the guy he was supposed to block run into our RB.

Not only must you block
Beer Man : 9/26/2013 2:30 pm : link
but you have to call it at the right time and not when everyone in the house is expecting it. My kids tease me every third and long - "let me guess a draw or a screen"
Our QB
Joey in VA : 9/26/2013 2:33 pm : link
Doesn't possess the touch to do it consistently. He rarely settles down enough to deliver the ball low and outside where it belongs. Oh and our OL is the suck right now.
Baas gave up the drawls
blakjedi : 9/26/2013 2:42 pm : link
in that gif... never should a DT be able to get 5 yeards deep into the backfield to touch the RB.
Alex Webster
Bleedin Blue : 9/26/2013 3:27 pm : link
must be rolling in his grave! When he was the coach, his teams ran the screen and ran them well!!! We might have sucked overall back then but we could run that screen to perfection!
What I love about that Baas gif
oipolloi : 9/26/2013 3:51 pm : link
is how after he totally whiffs on his man, he starts "blocking" some other Panther who is engaged with Snee. How about following your man so you can pounce on the ball if it comes loose after the DT creams the running back?

Baas has been an utterly terrible signing.
Oipolloi your right about Baas pushing the guy into Snee
Jimmy Googs : 9/26/2013 4:30 pm : link
In fact, if you close enough you can see Chris Snee yelling "oh, my hip!"

Jimmy,
Mike L. : 9/26/2013 4:45 pm : link
that's not Snee, that's Hynoski. Snee was blocking a linebacker. Baas did whif badly on that.
wilson would have only gotten to the LOS
blakjedi : 9/26/2013 4:56 pm : link
anyway. nicks had already not blocked his man to the outside and the safety had already gotten to the LOS.
We have been asking that question for 20+ years!
jintsfan : 9/26/2013 5:11 pm : link
In addition, why are they unable to defense a screen?
I think Joey nailed it,
barens : 9/26/2013 5:52 pm : link
because most of the time, when your offensive line sucks, that's usually the best time to run a screen. I'm not sure what it is, maybe confidence, maybe Eli is doing everything right, and everything else is crumbling, but it sure seems like he rushes those passes way before they should be thrown. I always thought you were supposed to lure the defense in a little more.

With Tiki, he was just so good, he really made it look easy. I remember Tiki catching a lot of darts and low balls, but he made the best of it.
Even when
Bleedin Blue : 9/26/2013 6:13 pm : link
your O-Line sucks they still have to hold the initial block to sell the pass so the screen works, and that ain't happening, the Defense is getting free way too early to even sell it!
BAAS was just a bad signing
cheeseburger : 9/26/2013 6:39 pm : link
never liked him and now that he's not healthy he should be benched.
If JPP puts on another 8 pounds he can play center.
