So do we think Coughlin retires after this season?

Josh in the City : 10/7/2013 12:38 pm
Assuming this current season stays on it's current path, the Giants will win under 6 games. Assuming this scenario, do you think Coughlin remains our head coach or do you think he decides to call it a career(it's my belief that he will not get fired under any circumstance and he's earned that). He's up there in age and the team will clearly need to retool. I don't think we need to go into full blown rebuilding mode b/c we still have lots of talent at skill positions but significant changes will obviously occur. Will Coughlin stick around to steer us on this course or will he leave that to a new, preferably younger coach (clearly assuming Gilbride won't take over!)? I think there's a strong possibility this is his last season as the Giants HC. But there's also a good chance that Coughlin doesn't wanna go out on one of the biggest duds of his career so he may want one more shot to turn it around. What do you think?

He retires......
Simms11 : 10/7/2013 12:39 pm : link
if the Giants ask him to step down and only then IMO; he's earned that much.
If I had to bet . . .
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 12:39 pm : link
I'd say no. But Gilbride and Fewell will go.
I think if we finish with a losing record
Jon from PA : 10/7/2013 12:40 pm : link
TC does not return as the head coach in 2014. which is a damn shame too because I'd HATE for a coach that has done so much for the franchise to go out on such a low note.
I think he gets fired but they say he
ballanda : 10/7/2013 12:40 pm : link
"retires". He's earned that much.
"If" we finish with a losing record?
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 12:42 pm : link
Does anyone seriously think this team can go 8-3 the rest of the way?
I really don't think he'll go but
GiantsBRFan : 10/7/2013 12:43 pm : link
We'll see a major rehaul on tthe staff.
I honestly can't
Josh in the City : 10/7/2013 12:45 pm : link
imagine Gilbride & Fewell getting fired and Coughlin staying. If he's asked to fire them and start with a brand new offense/defense I think he decides to retire as well. If it's left up to Coughlin, I truly believe they both stay.
I think he probably should
pjcas18 : 10/7/2013 12:45 pm : link
retire, but if I am him, I'd find it really hard to go out with the one losing season of my Giants career.

I'd want to give it another shot to see if I can turn things around with some roster turnover.

I'm not sure the Giants should let him make that decision.
My opinion
BigK : 10/7/2013 12:47 pm : link
The entire staff stays. They blame injuries/age and we see a drastically different team next year
I'm going with no
Mason : 10/7/2013 12:48 pm : link
People rag on Francesa but he knows members of this team. He said Coughlin won't quit if they go 2-14 or 12-4. I recall the kiss my ass comment about some reporters calling for his job in 2010. That Onion piece about him retiring from his family is spot on.
No
Big Blue '56 : 10/7/2013 12:48 pm : link
.
Can't just replace coordinators
jcn56 : 10/7/2013 12:50 pm : link
Coughlin's up there in age, who would you get for DC and OC in that case?

IMO, it's either they all stay or go. Not sure which Mara would pick, but I'd ask TC to retire.
He is getting fired for this atrocity
Sammo284 : 10/7/2013 12:52 pm : link
That dates back to last season. So the answer is yes. He will retire after he is fired.
Yes.
Red Dog : 10/7/2013 12:54 pm : link
And a year or more too late as is usual with GIANTS coaches (Fassel, Reeves, Handley, Sherman, etc.)
jcn56
Josh in the City : 10/7/2013 12:54 pm : link
agreed. It's either the Coughlin & both coordinators or all three stay. I can't see him starting from scratch with new coordinators at this point in his career.
Not with this year's record
njm : 10/7/2013 12:54 pm : link
He won't want to go out that way. Funny, I wouldn't have ruled it out if they had gone 12-4 and won at least 1 game in the playoffs. And if they win another SB in the next few years I'd say the chances of him retiring are around 90%.
No decent coordinators
Sammo284 : 10/7/2013 12:55 pm : link
Are joining Coughlin in a lame duck situation. Changing coordinators is not the answer here folks. Coughlin is every bit as responsible for this disaster as painful as it is to swallow and the time to change things up is now.
I don't see how they can keep either Fewell or Gilbride
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 12:56 pm : link
after 1-4 win season. No consequences? Let them try to sell that to the fan base.
Red Dog
Josh in the City : 10/7/2013 12:56 pm : link
Most thought he should have been fired after the 2006 season. I guess we're lucky Mara waited "one year too late" that time, right?
This is his last year
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 1:01 pm : link
as a Giant. He's had a very strange career with the Giants - a huge roller coaster where he's dodged a few big bullets, had one almost inexplicable hot streak (2011) and a really good 2-year stretch (2007-8).
People rag on Gilbride but give Coughlin a pass
Sammo284 : 10/7/2013 1:03 pm : link
But this is Coughlins offense that Eli is in and runs and Gilbride play calls out of. It is a stale and predictable boom or bust offense now that needs a fresh approach and offensive innovation. Coughlin won't allow that as long as he is here.

Play calling is only part of the problem when your offense offers little ingenuity or adaptation.
njm
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 1:03 pm : link
It may not be his decision to make.
they need
cokeduplt : 10/7/2013 1:03 pm : link
a regime change this team is way too sloppy. If Couglin comes back the team wont be much better next year.
Sammo
cokeduplt : 10/7/2013 1:04 pm : link
is 100% correct.
Again, still can't believe he didn't retire after the second SB
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:04 pm : link
65, a perfect time to go out on top.
RB - are you convinced Mara is going to give TC the ax?
jcn56 : 10/7/2013 1:05 pm : link
I'm not - I'm 50/50 on that one, it's hard to tell. If it were Wellington, TC would be here to stay. With JM, I'm not entirely sure if it means TC is a goner or if they somehow strip him of some control or fire coordinators, etc.
If Jason Garret gets fired
dep026 : 10/7/2013 1:06 pm : link
Id be all in for him to be the new OC.
Retire after your second SB with your franchise QB in his prime
jcn56 : 10/7/2013 1:06 pm : link
and your best defensive player a rookie? Why would you do that?
There's
Jerry in DC : 10/7/2013 1:07 pm : link
no chance that Coughlin stays and both coordinators are gone. There's an outside chance he dumps Fewell, but there's zero chance we have a new offense with Coughlin at the helm.

One way or another I suspect we'll have a new coach next year, but you never know. I'd imagine that there's going to be quite a bit of fan resistance is management decides to run it back with the same cast of characters after what looks like it's going to be a 4 win season.

It's pretty similar to the Eagles situation last year.
Because you'd be going out on top
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:07 pm : link
At 65, he took a chance that his legacy would be tarnished, and now it is.
if the Giants have a top 5 draft pick and they bring
nomad1986 : 10/7/2013 1:08 pm : link
back any part of this coaching staff next year will just be more of the same. Top 5 draft pick it's time to start over.
No Jason Garrett
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:08 pm : link
Please!
before yesterday, i wasn't sure
M in CT : 10/7/2013 1:09 pm : link
but after yesterday's game, and after listening to Coughlin's post game presser, it really sounded like he simply doesn't understand why the team is playing so poorly.

i'm not sure any of us fully understands why the team is playing so poorly either, but if anyone should have a good understanding as to what's wrong with this team, it's him.

time for a change. that said, i think the Giants organization will do the right thing by him. they'll ask him to retire and consider offering him a spot in the organization going forward. but i don't think he's on the sideline again next year.
jcn
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 1:09 pm : link
It's hard to say but at this point I'd have to lean towards the ax. Mara has hinted at it in previous seasons but Coughlin always seemed to turn it around just in time or things broke right for him and that never really got tested. However, none of those seasons rose to this level of embarrassment. It's getting to a point where it casts a bad light on the entire organization.
The bigger question is
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 1:11 pm : link
what will happen at the GM position?
I think Reese gets a reprieve for one more run
Sammo284 : 10/7/2013 1:22 pm : link
But Marc Ross might be in some trouble.
I
AcidTest : 10/7/2013 1:27 pm : link
think he's gone. I think he'd like to stay and fix the mess. I'm sure he doesn't want to go out like this, but heads are going to roll throughout the entire organization, and not just the players.

As far as Reese is concerned, I think he stays, although one would hope that there would be a shake up regarding the scouting department. Reese needs to specifically take control over the draft from Ross, who has done nothing for us or the Eagles.
I
AcidTest : 10/7/2013 1:28 pm : link
agree with those who say that Coughlin is effectively forced out, as politely as possible.
Let him play with his...

Grandchildren...
Lets hope so
ZogZerg : 10/7/2013 1:41 pm : link
Or it will be another shit show next year.
The Giants are in record breaking territory as far as the worst D off all time. Thanks to Coughlin holding on to our suck as D coordinator.
this happens to all teams at one time or another.
Del Shofner : 10/7/2013 1:46 pm : link
I think Coughlin retires, and all the coordinators are let go. As noted, the harder question is Reese. I would not be troubled if he goes too. Hard to justify the drafting track record of the last few years.
I think they give Reese one more chance
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:48 pm : link
regardless of what happens with the coaching.

Ross might go though.
No, I think the Giants brain trust would keep him on even if he died.
old timer : 10/7/2013 1:55 pm : link
I would be shocked if they let Coughlin go. The owners love the guy. IMHO, I think they should let him go but the Maras don't care what I think.
No.
Rick5 : 10/7/2013 1:55 pm : link
I imagine that he probably doesn't want to retire, and I very seriously doubt that the Giants would fire him. I would say that there is no greater than a 5% chance that he will be fired. He will be given at least two more seasons to try to get back to winning. That's my best guess.
He's a part of the problem...
silverfox : 10/7/2013 2:11 pm : link
...As we keep getting embarrassed, his stock drops every week, history or not...the players are no longer responding.
I hope so.
Dave in Hoboken : 10/7/2013 2:12 pm : link
I don't care what the talent situation is like on this team, there is NO excuse to be 0-5. None.
I think the premise we will go "Into rebuilding mode iis a mistake
Great White Ghost : 10/7/2013 2:23 pm : link
along with the assumption it will only be minor. I think we are ALREADY in rebuilding mode, some people just don't accept that, but it's the case, and will continue through next year and the year after. It's a major rebuilding, not a minor one. This year was sacrificed so they can keep the rebuilding period as short as possible, because they don't expect to be competitive during that time, regardless of public statements to the contrary.

As to whether Tc stays or not, I think it depends how the year plays out and who does, or does not develop. If they continue to play poorly and he sticks with roster and playcalling as they are then I think he is gone next year. Unless he makes progress with the team as is I don't think he is back.
Coughlin will retire
Jim in Fairfax : 10/7/2013 2:33 pm : link
when you pry the playbook from his cold, dead hands.
he'll get TWO MORE seasons??? Are you kidding?
Greg from LI : 10/7/2013 2:33 pm : link
.
wow - I don't think we're already in rebuilding mode.
Del Shofner : 10/7/2013 2:39 pm : link
I'd say we've been in denial that we need to be in rebuilding mode. Relying on Snee, Diehl, Baas, Tuck is "rebuilding"?
