so with everyone calling for a new coach, who do you pick?

yankeeslover : 10/7/2013 1:04 pm
im not saying wether this coaching staff should stay or go, but in all honesty if we had to replaced TC, who in reality would you choose? this is just message board fun so no flaming... me, I would give Jon Gruden a chance to work with ELI.... and get him a good DC.. and see what he can do...

No Jon Gruden
Blue Blood : 10/7/2013 1:05 pm : link
I would look at the college ranks..
Mike Zimmer or Pete Carmichael
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:06 pm : link
Assuming you can't coax John Fox to come back if he wins the super bowl.
Meeeh, I would stick with Coughlin, but change the coordinators.
Anakim : 10/7/2013 1:06 pm : link
Otherwise, if Tomlin miraculously shakes loose, you pounce on him in a second. I would also look into Leslie Frazier, but IDK, I don't know enough about his coaching philosophy.

Other than that, in no particular order:

Bill Cowher
Jon Gruden
Mike Zimmer
In reality, it's not going to be a "name" guy.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/7/2013 1:07 pm : link
It's probably going to be some well-regarded assistant. I can't see anyone in-house taking over.

Gruden seems like he's getting a better reputation than what he actually was. He won with Dungy's players, and then really struggled on his own, plus was difficult to work with.
TC or die
SHO'NUFF : 10/7/2013 1:07 pm : link
as long as he gets new coordinators, new offense, new philosophy.
David Shaw
Blue Blood : 10/7/2013 1:08 pm : link
from Stanford would be someone I would definitely talk to.
i'm not one who's calling for him to be fired
ShockNRoll : 10/7/2013 1:09 pm : link
but if he was fired, i'd hope that tomlin got fired from pittsburgh and the giants hire him. i think it's 80/20 tomlin stays in pittsburgh regardless of what happens and 50/50 for coughlin depending on how bad it gets, so it's really unlikely, but he's a great coach and i'd love to have him if coughlin is gone.
Coughlin won't fire anyone on-staff, if left to his own desires.
Optimus-NY : 10/7/2013 1:09 pm : link
IF you have to "force" him to fire his own coordinators, then what's the point of keeping him? Keep in mind TC is going to be 68 next year if he's back with a team that would be on a team with a one to two year re-tolling plan going forward. Give me a fresh start with a QB who caters to Eli
s strength instead of forcing an offense down his throat that takes away from him and the weapons they have. Enough.
I'm not saying TC should go but i would like to see what
robbieballs2003 : 10/7/2013 1:10 pm : link
Mel Tucker could do.
I'd prefer not to take a college coach
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:10 pm : link
.
Bill Cowher
Drewcon40 : 10/7/2013 1:11 pm : link
Anakim - I am not focusing on you but many are calling for Cowher. I may be in the minority but I wouldn't be thrilled with Cowher has Coughlin's succesor. I am not being confrontational, i am just curious what the pro-Cowher camp sees. Hasn't he been out of the game for a while or do you see this as an advantage?
I'd like to see Pete Carmichael
Greg from LI : 10/7/2013 1:11 pm : link
Get some new blood in here for once.
I could be wrong, but I don't see Cowher ever coming back
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:13 pm : link
The chances Gruden will is only slightly better.
Bill O Brien
Jon T : 10/7/2013 1:14 pm : link
would be an outstanding choice; Interview Adam Gase, Denver's OC who is only 35 and yes it's easy when Peyton is hte QB but he also helped to develop O when Tebow was QB and Peyton has spoken highly of him.. Carmichael seems to be content in NO as he pulled his name from consideration last year for a few jobs though he could be a good choice.. Ray Horton deserves consideration but I would go after Bill O' B first as he is very smart guy, insprirational speaker and leader, Billichick and Brady think very highly of him, and he might be the guy to lead Eli as he enters 5 more prime seasons..
jeff
ShockNRoll : 10/7/2013 1:14 pm : link
i agree with you, i think cowher stays retired. won a super bowl his last season as a head coach, has a nice gig at cbs, i'm not sure he would want to return to coaching.
Ken Whisenhunt
Giantfan in skinland : 10/7/2013 1:14 pm : link
I liked his work with Roethelisberger when BR was a young QB in Pitt. I liked his work with Warner in Arizona. And I like what they're doing with Philip Rivers in SD now (I think this also has to do with Mike McCoy's influence...who I REALLY like....so a guy who has worked within that system would be a target for me).

He seems to me that a guy that got stuck in a tough spot in Arizona with just lousy personel. After what looks to be a nice reclamation job as the OC in San Diego....makes a lot of sense for where we'll be next year.
Thankfully
Sammo284 : 10/7/2013 1:15 pm : link
Anak won't be calling any of the shots on this.

Any new HC has to offer an idea for changes to the offense. So if a D minded HC gets hired he needs to offer a plan to change the offense and bring a bright minded coach for the offense that Eli supports.

I think Jay Gruden or Mike Zimmer will be strong candidates but the pool will be quite large initially with Cowher looming large despite the fact he would not be my choice.
I do like Ken Whisenhunt.
Curtis in VA : 10/7/2013 1:17 pm : link
.
highly doubtful
Jon T : 10/7/2013 1:18 pm : link
Cowher wants back in he's quite happy doing what he's doing now.. Whis is a very good coach as mentioned as he took a team that hadn't done anything in 40 years to the SB.
Unlike prior seasons
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 1:18 pm : link
I think this is a realistic question right now.

I wouldn't mind Gruden. I think he was a good NFL coach and worked well with veteran QBs (Gannon and Miller). I also like Garrett. He's a good offensive mind and I think he could thrive in an environment where he wasn't being undermined by ownership. He also has a history with the Giants.
I have wanted Mike Zimmer for awhile now
jlukes : 10/7/2013 1:19 pm : link
wanted him back in 2011 when it was rumored that Coughlin was going to retire
Link - ( New Window )
I don't want anything to do with a re-tread coach
jlukes : 10/7/2013 1:20 pm : link
I want new blood.
Joules
Sammo284 : 10/7/2013 1:25 pm : link
I agree. I like O'Brien out of PSU as an option. I think he would jump at a chance to coach Eli and be a HC in the NFL.

He would also espouse an offense that incorporated receiving threats out of the backfield and more talent at TE.
Keep
AnishPatel : 10/7/2013 1:27 pm : link
Tc and change the coordinators. If Tc has to be fired because the season final record is that bad, then I do like Zimmer or ken Whisenhunt.
I love the idea of a quality college coach
Blue Blood : 10/7/2013 1:28 pm : link
and Shaw has NFL experience as well..

The thing that college coaches have to deal with is turnover... guys graduated.. get drafted.. leave for other schools.. The NFL has some of the same issues.. you have to be able to adjust for the talent you have.. which is one of the Giants biggest weaknesses...

TC
Jon T : 10/7/2013 1:32 pm : link
with new cooridnators isn't very likely to happen; he either returns with the same group in place or perhaps Judy convinces him it's time..
Anish
Sammo284 : 10/7/2013 1:36 pm : link
That is a recipe for even more failure and dysfunction.

Coughlin is a part of the problem and people need to stop with the sentimental nonsense too of letting Coughlin decide when it's time to go.

Thats not how the real world operates.
here is a good article on Mel Tucker
robbieballs2003 : 10/7/2013 1:39 pm : link
I don't know how he would stack up against other proven coaches but he deserves to be in the mix.
Link - ( New Window )
Too bad his name
TheBigBlueOne : 10/7/2013 1:40 pm : link
is Mel.
it's a real tough situation......
BillKo : 10/7/2013 1:42 pm : link
If TC stays, I think he'd at least fire Fewell who just hasn't done a very good job over his entire tenure. However.....as it has been said, what decent coach is going to take a coordinator job when the HC is approaching 70 yrs old.?

If TC is asked to step down/fired, it's going to be very awkward. I doubt TC is going to want to do that after what this season appears to be.......but really how much longer is he going to keep at this? Would TC just want one more year to prove his worth?

And rather then step down he'll have to be let go and that's going to be unfortunate.

I do think that a younger guy is needed, and a fresh approach on both sides of the ball.

I like O'Brien.

Don't like Gruden's brother or Wisenhunt.
What happened to all the Mike Sullivan talk.
Big Blue '56 : 10/7/2013 1:43 pm : link
Only on BBI would a guy a bunch here thought would be a natural, flies off the radar after a handful og games..

Optimus, Fewell's contract ends after this season. Reese merely has to opt NOT to re-sign him as opposed to having to eat a year or two of a contract
Try
oldog : 10/7/2013 1:45 pm : link
Spags again.
Belichick is 61,
Big Blue '56 : 10/7/2013 1:45 pm : link
but if the Giants and he showed mutual interest, I could see Kraft letting him out of his contract, but not without compensation
Wisenhunt is intriguing
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 10/7/2013 1:47 pm : link
Loved his work in Pittsburgh, and he took the Cardinals! to the Super Bowl. But you'd have to pair him with a strong defensive coordinator.

Zimmer and O'Brien are the other names that jump, but the Giants would have to offer big bucks to get O'Brien away from PSU.
FWIW,
Big Blue '56 : 10/7/2013 1:48 pm : link
Zimmer is 57
And BB56
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 10/7/2013 1:48 pm : link
I thought all along it would be Sullivan, but how do you sell that to your season ticketholders and Suite PSL buyers?
If Sullivan is running
Jon T : 10/7/2013 1:49 pm : link
the same O not sure he's the best option, he was seen as a potential heir especially after the last SB but after what's looking like a disaster of a season it may be time to go outside the organization for a fresh approach.
Mike Zimmer is 57
cosmicj : 10/7/2013 1:50 pm : link
and would be 58 by next training camp, which is a bit old to take over as HC of a top tier franchise.

Lovie Smith interviewed well in 2004 and fits the Coughlin mold: some impressive results in his first stop with the Bears. Ready to extend what he learned from his mistakes earlier in his career.
No Sullivan, no way
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:51 pm : link
There are probably 2 dozen better coaches they could hire.
Why was sullivan even mentioned in the first place?
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/7/2013 1:51 pm : link
That's the real mystery, not that he dropped off.
I do not want anyone from inside the ranks
LG in NYC : 10/7/2013 1:52 pm : link
I want fresh, someone from the outside who will bring a completely fresh approach to this team

I likes ome of the names bandied about so far (O'Brien, Zimmer, Shaw) but don't know enough about any of them to strongly advocate for any one of them.
I want nothing to do with Sullivan
jlukes : 10/7/2013 1:53 pm : link
and the TV/Gilbride system

I wouldn't mind seeing Jay Gruden. Like what he has done with Andy Dalton and really only one top skill position player.

I just don't know about giving the reins to a college coach.
Anakim : 10/7/2013 1:53 pm : link
I remember in 2003, there were some in the media clamoring for Bob Stoops or Kirk Ferentz. Maybe it's because I'm mainly unfamiliar with their coaching styles, but very few college coaches succeed at this level. For every Jimmy Johnson (Cowboys Jimmy, not Dolphins Jimmy. Haha), you get a Barry Switzer. More flame out than succeed. Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino, Steve Spurrier, Chan Gailey, Dennis Erickson, Butch Davis, etc.

As for Cowher (and Tomlin and Jon Gruden for that matter), I just like the idea of having a HC who has won a SB as a HC (with the exception of Zimmer obviously, but many people, including Parcells, believe that it's a shame Zimmer hasn't been a HC in this league). I know the stat of how no coach has won a SB with two different teams, but it's invaluable to know what it takes to win. I do have concerns about him not having LeBeau on his staff, but he did go 13-3 without LeBeau as his DC in 2001.

And each candidate and criteria has some serious negatives, which is why I want Coughlin to return. There's no one that pops out as a no-brainer, no flaw choice. (with the exception of Tomlin, but I think there's little to no chance he's going to get fired). It's just a shame that Coughlin isn't younger.
Jay Gruden is an exceptional idea
AnotherGiantsFan : 10/7/2013 1:55 pm : link
But I really can't even begin to think about this right now. This is something I will leave to the GM and not think much about. There's still a good shot that they keep TC.
O brein
Jon T : 10/7/2013 1:55 pm : link
coached for the pats from 07-11 he's not a 'college guy'
I like Mike Zimmer a lot too actually
AnotherGiantsFan : 10/7/2013 1:57 pm : link
I really like both the coordinators the Bengals have. They both have a fiery attitude, a players coach, and exceptional football minds.
I'm not as high on Jay Gruden as I was
jeff57 : 10/7/2013 1:57 pm : link
The Bengal offense is not as good as I thought it would be. But their defense has been better than I thought. Which is where Zimmer comes in.
OC of the broncos
Vegas Steve : 10/7/2013 1:59 pm : link
Gaase rates an interview maybe not enough experience
Ray horten DC of the browns rates a look see
Chris Peterson of Boise St also merits and interview

Jay Gruden?
robbieballs2003 : 10/7/2013 2:01 pm : link
Come on. What has he proven? If Green doesn't get the ball his offense doesn't work. They have BGE, Bernard, Gresham, Eifert. Green Sanu, etc.
I also like David Shaw
Giantology : 10/7/2013 2:02 pm : link
