so with everyone calling for a new coach, who do you pick?

yankeeslover : 10/7/2013 1:04 pm
im not saying wether this coaching staff should stay or go, but in all honesty if we had to replaced TC, who in reality would you choose? this is just message board fun so no flaming... me, I would give Jon Gruden a chance to work with ELI.... and get him a good DC.. and see what he can do...

:)
what about that OC from Indy?
yankeeslover : 10/7/2013 2:02 pm : link
forget his name, but I hear he is getting his props with Luck
You realize Andy Dalton is their QB, right?
AnotherGiantsFan : 10/7/2013 2:06 pm : link
He's made an explosive offensive team with a game managing average quarterback. That's no small feat.
Many more college coaches now have some sort of NFL coaching
Shockeyisthebest80 : 10/7/2013 2:07 pm : link
experience. For example, David Shaw coached in the NFL for 9 years.

Shaw, O'Brien, and Zimmer are very attractive names.
Ditto Anakim
old man : 10/7/2013 2:07 pm : link
Tomlin, then Zimmer.
Jon
Anakim : 10/7/2013 2:07 pm : link
O'Brien also was an OC for all of one year
Lovie Smith
hoopy3 : 10/7/2013 2:09 pm : link
Not saying that's who I would choose, but it would not surprise me at all if he were our next head coach. He is only 55, he had a successful run in a major market city and he suffered primarily due to lack of qb talent. His final season was 10-6. He also was fairly high on the Giants list in 2004. Obviously he would need a good offensive coordinator, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least. This all assuming coughlin is done at the end if this year, which is by no means guaranteed.
That's what I said
Anakim : 10/7/2013 2:17 pm : link
Lovie Smith was close to becoming our HC in 2004. I actually think he's the premature frontrunner for the HC job if Coughlin doesn't return next year.
Ok,
beforeandafterdc : 10/7/2013 2:21 pm : link
not a SEC or Georgia homer, actually dislike anything Georgia, but I like Mark Richt.
How about Tom Coughlin.
wgenesis123 : 10/7/2013 2:33 pm : link
Time for him to reinvent himself again.
I believe TC will retire and I'd like to
PeterS : 10/7/2013 3:01 pm : link
see Jon Gruden come in and instill some ATTITUDE on the team.
I think David Shaw would be a great hire
David in LA : 10/7/2013 3:11 pm : link
plus it would add more intrigue to the Niners rivalry.
Thats how the Steelers did it.
AnishPatel : 10/7/2013 3:14 pm : link
They knew they liked something about Cowher. So they kept his ass but changed coordinators. Ironically, they were Gilbride and Tjm Lewis. If Coughlin has to go I am fine with that. However, if ownership still thinks he can coach then keep him and change coordinators. We already have played musical DCs and if Gilbride leaves we will be on our 3rd OC.

I fucking could careless at this point of we keep TC or let him go. Personally, I think he can still coach but Coughlins problem hhe hires coordinators that aren't that good. We will be on our 5th DC and then our 3rd OC. I could deal with that if the coordinators are good. If not then we can say fuck it and just fire everyone. I just think he can still coach but bothsystems have hit their eexpiration date so to speak.
don't care
bc4life : 10/7/2013 3:15 pm : link
but if FO decides to go ina new direction - amek the decision as early as possible so the new HC can start putting together his staff or his plan for a staff ASAP.
The systems are Coughlin hallmarks
David in LA : 10/7/2013 3:17 pm : link
meaning he's expired with them as well. 10 years is a long time, sometimes relationships get stale, and it's just better to part ways and bring in a new face.
My pick
Paul in Brooklyn : 10/7/2013 3:21 pm : link
would be to bring in a new GM and have him decide what he'd like in a coaching staff.
Can't we let THIS gm decide what he likes in his coaching staff?
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/7/2013 3:23 pm : link
He hasn't had a chance to do that yet.
Reese deserves to choose his own coach before he's shown out
David in LA : 10/7/2013 3:25 pm : link
.
He's had
Paul in Brooklyn : 10/7/2013 3:27 pm : link
numerous chances. These coaches are his guys. If they weren't, he would have already made a change.
Coughlin was an Accorsi hire
David in LA : 10/7/2013 3:29 pm : link
how can Reese show Coughlin the door when the Giants won a Super Bowl his first year as GM? Think about that for a second.
I really wouldn't mind TC back with new coordinators.
Giants11737 : 10/7/2013 3:30 pm : link
I do believe we can change the offensive and defensive philosophies of this team without having to decapitate.

In a perfect world, would love to keep TC and have Norv Turner as OC- won't happen, but I can dream.
Whoever gets to make the decision to choose the new coach
Dave in Hoboken : 10/7/2013 3:31 pm : link
is going to be picking the coach that gets Eli in the last years of his prime. Hopefully, they let someone with a very good track record to make that selection.
Turner seems to be starting to do good things in Cleveland.
Riggies : 10/7/2013 3:35 pm : link
(Or at least he was, before Hoyer went down and he wasn't saddled with Weeden.)

They're not going to let him go, from his OC gig there, to make a lateral move to be OC here, even if the Giants somehow did have interest in him for that role.
Norv is at Cleveland as their OC
David in LA : 10/7/2013 3:36 pm : link
bringing him here would be a lateral move, and they absolutely would not let him just leave.
I'm leaning
downinfront : 10/7/2013 3:38 pm : link
towards David Shaw.
O'brien
Great White Ghost : 10/7/2013 3:40 pm : link
or Shaw
I wouldn't mind having an OC
AnotherGiantsFan : 10/7/2013 3:40 pm : link
Out of one of these HCs that lose their job.
Let Coughlin
TMS : 10/7/2013 4:01 pm : link
take a position like Parcells took in Miami ( Director of FB or something). If he wants it. Replace Reese with Chris Mara. Hire Sullivan as HC. Let Sullivan get his own coaching staff.
How about Ray Horton, DC of the Brownies?
Victor in CT : 10/7/2013 4:09 pm : link
Has a good rep, almost had the Cards job, lost to Arians at the last second.
Lovy Smith
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 4:21 pm : link
with Norv Turner as OC would be interesting.
TMS
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 4:23 pm : link
I'm not sure how I'd feel about Coughlin potentially lording over one of his former staff. I think there are some risks there.
I think the biggest impact on TC's successor was how he did this year
Matt in SGS : 10/7/2013 4:27 pm : link
My opinion all along is that TC was going to retire after this year, good or bad. The difference was how the Giants ended up doing and what that successor was going to look like. If the Giants had a strong season, I think that Sullivan would be the natural successor because of his ties to the team and the offensive system. It would makes sense from a continuity standpoint.

However, if we get a 4-12 crash and burn, all bets are off and I think the Giants would look to go in a totally different direction. For one thing, the Giants have not had a defensive minded head coach since Parcells (Handley, Reeves, Fassel and Coughlin all offensive coaches). The Giants defense has been in a decline for years and this year is Sheridanian in it's embarassment.

That said, and as much of a joke or whatever you want to call the Cowher stuff on BBI, I know that he's interested in the job. Period. So we'll have to see if the Giants have the interest in the other direction. In some cases, the Coughlin hire seemed inevitable back in 2003 as the season went to hell with Fassel. I have a feeling if things continue as badly for the rest of the way, Cowher might well end up being the same deal.
I don't mind the idea of Coughlin in an advisory role
Greg from LI : 10/7/2013 4:29 pm : link
But I don't think he should have any authority beyond lending his voice to the conversation.
Matt
Greg from LI : 10/7/2013 4:30 pm : link
One thing I've never gotten - WHY is Cowher so interested in the job?? He has no connection to the Giants or the region.
Greg
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 4:30 pm : link
My worry would be that he'd try to insert himself regardless of his stated role. That's a really bad dynamic in an organization.
TMS
nomad1986 : 10/7/2013 4:31 pm : link
Do you think Reese has more say in what goes on with the Giants than Chris Mara? Must be a weird dynamic having an owner report to an employee.
Greg
RB^2 : 10/7/2013 4:32 pm : link
I would guess because of the market. It is a very glamorous job if you succeed in it.
Norv Turner would be a lateral move from Cleveland
Go Terps : 10/7/2013 4:32 pm : link
If we were to pursue him (not altogether crazy), it would probably have to be as head coach...a little scary as a prospect. We would need a VERY strong DC...it wouldn't happen in a trillion years but a Turner/Rex Ryan combo is strong for a franchise on the rebuild.

I don't want Cowher here at all.

Bill O'Brien is interesting.
Matt, always liked Cowher,
Big Blue '56 : 10/7/2013 4:33 pm : link
but as with Gibbs, how much passion would he bring back to the game? Sometimes being out of the game so long(7th year?) allows the game to pass you by..Possible exception, Vermeil. Who else made a successful return after being out 7 or more years?
I still would like Coughlin here as long as he wants to be
Matt M. : 10/7/2013 4:40 pm : link
However, only if he fires both his OC and DC.
I'd love Norv as OC, hate hate hate him as HC
Greg from LI : 10/7/2013 4:42 pm : link
Same deal with Wade Phillips. Two excellent coordinators who are overmatched as HCs.
How about Rex Ryan as DC
Big Blue '56 : 10/7/2013 4:43 pm : link
if the Jets let him go after this season?
Either
bignygfan : 10/7/2013 5:21 pm : link
Gase or Hamilton or Stewart or Alexander or Gilroy.

That's my top 5.
A young HC who will hire excellent coordinators.
NyquistX3 : 10/7/2013 5:28 pm : link
I want the OC to be high percentage and QB friendly.

I wouldn't mind leaving TC as the guy who manages the games, gives the speeches and runs the practices, but hiring an OC who has full control of the offense. I'd love to see Spags back as DC.
Greg
Matt in SGS : 10/7/2013 5:41 pm : link
the answer to that question comes from the closeness of the Mara and Rooney families. When you worked for the Steelers as long as Cowher did, he got used to stable ownership and a supportive football family ownership. Essentially, he worked for the AFC version of the Giants.

Secondly, coming in to NY, he starts off with a team that has a 2 time Super Bowl MVP at QB, a great deal of talent at the skill positions, and a defensive line that should be a lot better with guys like JPP, Kiwi, Moore, etc. There is a great deal to work with here so you can turn things around pretty quickly. For Cowher, he wouldn't have to find a QB, he's got one, which is the #1 thing a coach looks for.

You add in those parts, a potentially high draft pick, and cap room, the Giants are a very attractive job. From the Giants standpoint, Cowher is a known quantity, he's a defensive coach, and his ties to the Steelers allows the Giants access into his past thanks to the Rooney connections.

All I know is that I heard of his interest in the job before Bettis came out and said it a few years ago, and from what I understand, he is still very interested in it.

1. If the Jets fire Rex, he'll probably be in play for head coaching jobs.

2. I can't imagine for a second John Mara wanting to employ a Ryan, even with Rex being a great defensive coach.
Love the Bill Obrien
chopperhatch : 10/7/2013 5:51 pm : link
idea. Also intrigued by Lovie. But O'Brien commands a presence. That scene with him barking at Tom Brady on the sideline and Brady basically looking at him like a scolded child was great. If you can back down Brady, I think you can grab a team like the GIants by the horns.

Would be great to get them both, but I'd be happy with O'Brien and Spags as a DC.
I'd be intrigued

by Greg Roman.
Rex Ryan is a horrble idea at DC.
chopperhatch : 10/7/2013 5:54 pm : link
Not only because of the attitude he brings to the team, but also because no coach would be comfortable with the whispering Rex might do in the ears of players. Rex wants to be an HC. He'd have to fail AGAIN at another job to be in play for DC positions again. Sorta like Norv Turner did on offense.
