A lot of people including myself have been critical of Reese and his drafts. However he hasn't done such a great job with our high priced free agent signings either. Here are just a few.
Cris Canty: A solid contributor but never became the Keith Hamilton type player Reese envisioned. I never understood why they brought him here being that he was a 3-4 end.
Antrel Rolle: One of my favorite player because he plays hard every single game. However with that said he was never worth the kind of money that Reese gave him.
David Bass: I don't think I really have to say too much here. No one was overly excited when we signed him and now we know why. Always hurt but even when he's healthy he's an average player.
I mean Terrell Thomas is another guy who was about to get big contract and I just never saw him as a guy who we should give even Corey Webster type money to. What do you guys think?
The same can be said for Canty, who, while he was never spectacular for us, was a huge cog in our 2011 postseason run and was a good player for us when healthy.
Baas also played his best ball for us in the 2011 postseason run. Outside of that run, he really hasn't been very good. So I'll agree this wasn't a good signing.
Thomas was signed to a contract that was quite fair and gives us the opportunity to void it.
Reese has been pretty good about letting certain players walk before throwing big money out them(remember when Smith, what a shame he was injured, was signed away by the Eagles. BBI about imploded)so he has that going for him.
About the only big signing I was disappointed in was Bass. I didn't think he was that good with San Fran but the pickings(if I recall correctly)were pretty slim that year.
I typically am not a fan of guys who talk as often as Rolle does but he backs it up and plays hard through injuries. He may not have been as much of a ballhawk as you'd like, but he is still effective. look no further than last Sunday when he pretty much locked down Avant all day.
In NFL free agency, it's nearly impossible not to overpay, which is why the Giants as an organization typically try to stay away from it and build through the draft and the secondary FA market. Sometimes, like after the 2009 season with CC Brown and company, you have no choice but to go out there and fill a major hole via FA.
That said, the Baas signing has been highly disappointing, Canty alittle bit less so.
I don't think he was an awful signing, and almost all the time you have to overpay UFA's, so no he probably didn't prove to be worth his actual salary cap hit on the field, but you could argue most UFAs don't
One of the Raven's beat reporters said that Canty had a "dominant" minicamp in June. Who has ever said while he was here that Canty was "dominant" anywhere?
Fewell and Gilbride definitely need to go. There schemes are just not working. Fewell is just poor! look at Osi and Canty with new teams. Osi has four sacks, forced fumbles, a pick six and Canty has 2 sacks and two forced fumbles. The giants D as a team only has 5 sacks.
He does not seem to know how to get pressure on a QB anymore. So for me, Fewell needs to be the first guy out the door.
As for Reese, my issue with him is Oline. He has a great QB that MUST have protection. he is a not a QB that is going to scramble and create. He is a master in the pocket and without protection he is below average as his current stat line dictates. Protect Eli and he is in the elite category, don't and he looks a lot like the lower caliber QB's in the league.
Overpaying for guys like Canty and Baas came down to needing players at those positions, but injuries derailed both really. Moreso than being simply bad signings.
You give up anything to win a SB. I don't want to be good for 10 years without rings. Give me the damn trophy.
Signing Dan Conner and letting a heart and soul guy like Blackburn go. How did that work out along with all the other washed up linebackers he has brought in.
Oh, and he did such a good job with the running backs he had to eat shit and bring back a guy he had no use for a year ago. Let's face it, Jerry Reese has hit the skids man. He is spinning his wheels bigs time and I think it bears watching how he handles the mess he has created.
When you look at the way he has denutted this team I don't know how any of us as Giant fans can honestly say in Reese we trust. He has a lot work to do to earn that trust back.
Canty when healthy was really good. He was the guy people kept double teaming
Baas has been a tough one. When healthy in the playoffs he was real good. Problem is when he is not healthy he is bad. I understood why they signed him. He was the best FA center on the market and Reese was not going to have a R or JAG at C
He has made very good decisions on letting people go
You are going to overpay for top young FA. It is the NFL
Might have been better to retain Cofield, than give the money to Canty....
Rolle is given all the credit for what he said during that 6 game stretch....Tuck couldn't open his mouth, so someone had to say something.....to say this defense turned completely around because of what Rolle said is pure legend.....now if Rolle's words could have magically transformed last year's team or this year's team, maybe I could buy it....
It was a special moment where offense and defense came together, and we may never see it again.....
He was not some playmaker. The INT in the super bowl is his Tyree moment.
